Carter Cole. Brutal. Billionaire. Breaker of hearts. They say he climbed a mountain of corpses to get to the top. And still, every woman wants the title of Mrs.Cole. They can have him. I didn’t come home for Carter. No matter what he says and does when he finds out I’m back. The bastard may have stolen all my firsts… But there’s no way I’m giving him a second chance.
Carter
Anna Vaughn was mine from the first moment I saw her. She’s still mine. I just have to show her. I’m not that f*cked-up kid she met on the midnight beach anymore. Not someone who can be blackmailed into breaking hearts. I’ll fix everything I shattered between us. Eliminate the obstacles. I let Anna get away once. I won’t make the same mistake twice.
Cruel Dominion is a dark romance with a morally black anti-hero who will stop at nothing to have the girl who got away.

Poppy writes steamy contemporary romance with a focus on all things forbidden, dark, and taboo. She likes her main men morally gray and has always had a thing for bad boys who will do anything to win the hearts of the women they love. All her stories end with a hard-won HEA ♡
This is a dark "second chance" read that's not bad, but is just more dull and boring than it should have been. If you're in the mood for an obsessed hero, you may like it, but it's nothing special.
The hero and heroine were together as teens. She was rich but unhappy with a controlling dad. He was poor. One day, he broke up with her in a cruel way, seemingly out of nowhere. The heroine left town after that. 6 years later, her new life wasn't going so well, so she's back in town, living with her bad dad again. During that time, the hero has become rich and powerful, and he wants her back.
This is a good premise, no complaints with the basic plot. But, although we get strong hints that the hero broke up with her years ago because he was coerced into it, the two of them don't actually discuss that until like 90% into this book. That's so annoying! I'm okay with dragging out a conversation that characters need to have, IF it makes sense for them to delay. But it's annoying when it's dragged out too much. There was no reason for them to not clear the air sooner!
The heroine also came across as a bit weak. First of all, she has MAJOR BBS (body betrayal syndrome - that thing in books where a heroine is like, "I'm so angry with you!" but then falls into bed with the hero anyway, without resolving their problems). Second of all, she returns home because she has nowhere else to go. But her dad sucks so much, she keeps thinking about leaving again. But she never actually makes moves. It's always hard for me to respect a character who's like, "I hate the situation that I'm in!" but then doesn't try to do anything to change it.
So, this was just meh. But I've read worse. This was my first book from this author, I would maybe try something else from her, but I'm not in a rush to.
Ummm, who doesn’t love an obsessive and possessive man in a dark romance? Carter and Anna were a teenage couple who were given a second chance at love. I also loved how Rurac and Emily were mentioned in this book as well.
Sadly this wasn't for me.. it had all the right ingredients I normally like in a book but it just felt like it was missing something.... felt too rushed too OTT .
This was an absolutely horrible book that I regret reading. I went into it bc I love dark romance and second chances but this was ridiculous!
During their six year separation he was publicly a bachelor with a bunch of women he never saw twice as a CEO while she was working as a waitress with an abusive boyfriend.
She comes back and he just takes her over and uses sex to get what he wants from her and doesn't care that it emotionally hurts her.
Also the reason for the initial separation is never even addressed until the very end and only get back together after previously mentioned ex kidnaps her and she was to fucking traumatized to go back to her dad's.
Oh yeah he also hacks her phone and sees her touching herself to pics of his and in this scene we also see her looking at some pics with his OWs
I'm so sick of reading about doormat FMCs and being told it's a dark romance, no you just don't know how to write a man trying to get you back without her losing all bodily autonomy and being kidnapped/traumatized/almost SA'd twice
(3.5/5) I don't believe I'm the target reader for Cruel Dominion by Poppy St. John. I was given an eARC of this book ahead of its August 26, 2024 in exchange for an honest review. Even though this wasn't for me, I want to sincerely thank Poppy St. John for an eARC of this novel.

Cruel Dominion is a fast-paced, standalone dark romance. What to expect: 🖤 Dark romance 🖤 1st person, dual POV 🖤 Obsessive, billionaire MMC 🖤 Second chance 🖤 Touch her & die 🖤 Dual timeline 🖤 Breeding kink
Overall, I enjoyed the second chance romance aspect to this story and that the MMC is a morally black, possessive billionaire.
However, there were some key parts of this book that I struggled with: 👉 The FMC's character is inconsistent (in my opinion). She appears very headstrong and resilient, but the moment she's around the MMC she has no backbone. As a result, I struggled to connect with her. 👉 This is personal preference, but I was disappointed there wasn't more development of side characters. Summer is the only one we're really introduced to and she barely makes any appearances but has a critical role in the storyline. 👉 The scene with the photographer / gallery owner felt misplaced and unnecessary
I want to note that I wasn't aware this book had a breeding kink, and I typically gravitate away from books with that trope. This personal preference was not a factor in my final star rating.
Did I finish this book in 12 hours? technically yes!!!
Normally i don’t like second chance romances but Carter is boy OBSESSED and it made my heart happy because Anna deserved it. But she’s stronger than me, with the CHEMISTRY that they had i would’ve folded at the very first gala.
Was the drama a little over the top? Sure, but that’s what makes a good dark romance!!!! What’s not to love about a guy who would burn down everything for his girl?! Plus a little boy from the wrong side of tracks falls for rich politicians daughter?! Uh yup!
Consider my reading slump busted (terrible for me because the school year starts tomorrow!)
Anna and Carter had previously met 6 years earlier and instantly bonded over their horrible fathers. After Carter broke her heart, she left home and disappeared. I mean, Anna was the daughter of a senator and Carter was the boy on the wrong side of the tracks, it wasn’t ever going to last? Or was it?!
But when Anna is home, not that she is happy about it, Carter is determined to make her his for good. Carter is no longer the boy she originally met. He is now an obsessive, possessive, and oh so intense billionaire! (YES PLEASE!)
The chemistry between these two was off the charts from the beginning. I fell in love with Carter and his dark self! 🥵
I read this book in half a day! The dark, dangerous, and absolutely captivity book will draw you in.
I will admit I wasn’t sure if I was going to like how the book flipped back and forth between past and present, but as the book went on, BRILLIANT!
Also, I can add (breeding kink) to my list! 🫣🤭
4.5⭐️

The heroine having bruises around her neck to the hero abusing poor Katerina.
Men that want to strike women, don't do it because they are traumatised, they do it because they are toxic cunts.
There is nothinf redeeming in a Billionaire.
Their existence starves kids by default.
He's a cunt.
Just like Josh.
Green Pilled Patriachial Parable of Toxicity, for the Unseen, Unloved and utterly Unfucked in the world.
Your book has to be more than "which rapist am I bonded to the most?"
Goes from smacking Katerina about to just hunting down Anna and abusing her, even locking her up in the boot of a car.
Bitch, this is not romance, it's personal exceptionalism.
So Anna must remain too open, never grows.
Carter gets to remain severely controlling.
Books like this remind me some women just never tell another story but, "My dad wasn't a good dad, so here's how I nuance that into a Toxic Book Boyfriend."
It's always a redflag when someone wonders about a mans mental health when he's denying you freedom.
The Mentally Ill are among the least toxic and I will rate you One, for appropriating my story, and giving it to an abuser.
“Curel Dominion” was packed with action, romance, spice, and unexpected sadness. The story flows from past to present, I didn’t have a challenge adapting to it. Readers will follow Carter and Anna’s path to reconnect as they trudge their way through several obstacles caused by Anna’s high-profile father and her abusive ex-boyfriend.
I liked how Author Poppy St. John wrote Carter and Anna’s story. Readers first meet Carter, and the way he is projected is one way, but after delving into his past and seeing what his childhood was like, it all will make sense as to why he made the decisions he made.
Fans of dark romance who love their MMCs who are all possessive will fall in love with Carter. He is the kind of guy who will do anything to win Anna back and ensure she stays with him permanently ––cough, cough, br33ding shmink.
I’d say “Cruel Dominion” was a winning read for me.
I managed to get to 53% and gave up. The story had great potential, but was unbalanced and “off”. The beginning was incredibly slow, I skimmed… Then the plot picked up a bit once they finally met. And then it once again slowed down. I had a hard time liking the heroine. The author tried to make her out as sensible and strong and yet she came out indecisive and a bit childish in her inability to decide.
Absolutely fell in love with Carter and Anna's story.
Carter, the ever controlling, dominant, and possessive MMC and Anna, the determined, strong-willed, and fierce FMC.
Carter is determined to right his wrongs but never apologetic for who and what he is. His past has made him stronger, turned him into something more, but it's the secrets that could take away his future with Anna.
Anna is determined to put her past behind her, forge a future whilst pursuing her dreams of becoming a photographer, but has to come to terms with her father's iron fist and swallow her pride all for the sake of image.
Carter is relentless in his pursuit of Anna. He lost her once, and he is determined not to lose her again. Anna seems to put herself in precarious positions that result in Carter coming to the rescue, much to Anna's dismay, but more to Carter's delight.
When Anna's past comes back to haunt her, Carter moves heaven and earth to bring her back into the safety of his arms. Even when she learns the truth, including her father's involvement, does she comes to a mutual understanding.
And with thanks to her friend Summer, Anna gets to realise her dreams as a photographer, but Carter succeeded in fulfilling his need to see Anna pregnant with his child and also wearing his ring.
And those smexy scenes were steaming, blazing, and smouldering hot.
Genre/Trope: Second Chance Romance Book Type: Standalone Book Length: Novel POV: Alternating Dual Setting: California Male MC: Carter Cole grew up poor with a sick but loving mother and an abusive father. He fell in love with Anna at 18 but had to let her go and knew he made a mistake immediately. He turned his life around and became a ruthless CEO and businessman. Carter is around 24-25 and is heavily tattooed with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Female MC: Anna Vaughn grew up under her governor father’s control. She meets Carter on the beach and falls in love over a summer when she’s 17. After a devastating breakup she disappears for 6 years and gets into a terrible relationship that eventually forces her back home. Anna is around 23-24 and has brown hair and emerald-green eyes. Endearment: Little Siren and Baby Spice Level: Medium Frequency of Spice: Low/Medium Angst Level: Medium Cliffhanger: No My Review: I really enjoyed this book. The second chance trope is one of my favorites and this one hit right for me. I liked that the separation was only 6 years and not decades or something ridiculous. I liked the angst and longing each had for the other. I felt there were a few plot holes and Carter and Anna could have communicated better and earlier on, and I wanted a bit more spice, but I still really liked their journey overall and I’m interested in reading more by the author.
i really did like most everything in this! …with the exception of that sorta detailed (but short) scene in the beginning between the MMC and the female escort… idk i just felt like that scene didn’t need to be as fleshed out as it was lmao🥴 like u can just tell me he’s been a slut up until the moment he reconnects with the FMC. no need to put that much description into an “ow scene”- def put me off for a hot min, but then i got over it real quick because it really was just a one off and then he expeditiously works to get his girl (the FMC) back!!
this also had that perfect amount of suspenseful elements for me. although i felt like the “reveal”/“twist” that explained the initial betrayal between the MC’s was highly predictable ngl.
If you are looking for a fast-paced, dark romance book with a true morally grey mmc this is for you! I am not usually a fan of second-chance romances but Carter and Anna’s story was great. Carter would do anything for Anna. I enjoyed that we got chapters from the present and the past but I do wish they were labeled because it did get confusing at times. I got to the end of this book and was wishing for more chapters because I didn’t want their story to end and I wanted to see more of their future. This was my first time reading a book by Poppy St. John but it definitely won’t be my last. Thank you so much Poppy for sending me an ARC.
This dark romance was so good. Their story was so beautiful and I’m so happy that after all they been through they are finally together and happy. Also the spice was spicy 🥵.
The topics that are presented in this book are definitely some heavy stuff, and I enjoyed to see the characters somehow get through all of it, and became stronger.
There were aspects that I wish we could see what happened in more detail. And when the chapters were from the past it would be nice for them to be identified, at first I was a little confused because we were in the present and when I would start the next chapter I was in the past.
I devoured this book as an arc. I’m obsessed with Carter and Anna. His entire goal in life is to become more powerful than her father so he can protect her. Imagine being loved that way. This is one of the best second chance romances I’ve read. The reason they get separated is so gut wrenching but makes their reunion that much better. 4.5 stars :) I loved this!
I wanted to give it 5 stars but after what he said when they were teenagers and how she literally let him back in without even a sorry, I had to downgrade my rating.
4.5* I really enjoyed this book, but something is preventing me from giving it a perfect 5/5. I don’t know what it is, but it was still really enjoyable and had a nice pace.
I cannot even put into words the dislike that I had of this book. Blurb might have what drew you in, like me, but don't, just don't. I skimmed the whole freaking book!
Who is editing this book? Argh! This book could've been amazing! But the repetitiveness, the cheesiness, and just drawn out scenes made this a very hard book top finish. This was my first book by this author. Such a bummer.
I initially rated this 3 stars but lowered it the longer I thought about it. After reading an entire chapter on the prostitutes he flies in from Europe every other week, I wasn’t convinced of his “it’s always been you” declarations. He just wasn’t a hero I could support. I mean he built her a dark room in his house. So he felt like she was for sure coming back. So why all the women? It didn’t make sense.
