Enjoyed this book? Look for 'The Book of Ofelia' also by Martyn Stanley, a subversive. young adult urban fantasy with Vampires. ASIN:B08MQPS2DD
Award winning writer, Martyn Stanley is married to his wife, Rachael, and has two young children. He lives in a small village on the Staffordshire, Cheshire border and is a director at a small manufacturing unit. He has always been interested in writing, and over the years has spent many hours writing for pleasure on forums, as well as writing some short stories. "The Last Dragon Slayer" is his first novel, and his second and third books, “The Verkreath Horror” and "The Blood Queen" (along with other planned books), form part of the “Deathsworn Arc” series.
He has also authored the 'Lambton Worm' and 'Return of the Worm Slayer' a re-telling of an old English folktale and a sequel.
He has long been an avid reader of Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld,” and it was partly due to his love of this fantasy series, that he sought to write his own “epic fantasy” books. Unlike Terry Pratchett’s work, his books have a darker tone and address some adult themes, including questions of faith and moral philosophy.
Martyn has many other varied interests. He completed his Open University General Science degree and graduated with First Class Honours in 2019, the course material provided inspiration and ideas for his books. The course has also led him to read a number of other science-based books for pleasure, which has further strengthened his atheist leanings. As part of his degree he studied Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing - being awarded a distinction in the latter.
Martyn is interested in video games and gaming culture, particularly fantasy adventure and role-playing games. He enjoys playing the guitar, and spent a few years in a rock band during his miss-spent youth! Besides this, he has an interest in martial arts, and although no longer practising, due to family commitments, he holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. This is something he would like to resume doing, time permitting!
His latest novel is the subversive YA Vampire novel, 'Ofelia'. which won the Literary Titan Silver Book Award for 2021.
Well, it didn't take me 7 years to write this. It probably took me 2. Editing it and getting it ready to publish? That was the killer. Not because of the book, but because of 'life'. Back in 2019, my mum was dying of cancer. In the second half of that year she deteriorated quickly and ended up passing away in October 2019. It shouldn't have affected me as much as it did. I had a tumultuous relationship with her. She was interested in 'alternative medicine', 'conspiracy theories' and she was an anti-vaxxer. She was very illogical person, and that was perhaps how I becamse such a skeptical and logical person. There was more to it than that. However, that's stuff that isn't for a public forum. Needless to say, her death came with a lot of 'baggage'.
I think maybe I'd have fared better were it not for the pandemic. That, along with lockdowns and social isolation hit at a time when I was still reeling from the only occasion I witnessed a person die. I was a mess. It went beyond depression and into something more resembling an existential crisis whereby everything seemed futile and pointless. It got to the point where I feared talking about how I actually feel about reality and life, because my outlook was so dire, it risked making others feel suicidal.
Am I over this?
No. Not really, however I am trying. It's taken the time between then and now, occasionally forcing myself to work on the book and get it closer to completion. I'll be honest it's been sitting ready for months now, but I couldn't even face the small task of publishing it. However, I know some people out there have been waiting to read what happens, so I wanted to get it out. I also feel like having something I care about to work towards is important and finishing this series and writing more novels IS something I care about, even when my capacity to care about anything is at an all-time low.
The truly sad thing is while I was writing this book, I was having a lot of fun. It has fresh, bold ideas. I think I was quite daring with some of the choices I made, and I think it's a book with real character growth and development.
I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, and I still enjoy re-reading it despite the countless times I've already done so. I know it sounds like it has been a bit of a thorn in my side, but honestly I think having as a project in the background has probably done me far more good than harm.
I'm just sorry I made you guys wait so long to continue the story. I should have got it sorted 5 years ago. I could have got it sorted 5 years ago. I hope the few of you who have been following the series enjoy it and think it was worth the wait.
I recieved this as a review copy from the author. Emergence continues the same the story and is up to the same standard as the previous books in the series. Lots of action and herotics, with lashings of magic. Sadly, some of the characters have been killed off, but those who remain are still fighting evil. The danger is even greater than they thought. Recommended reading for Mr Stanley's fans and anyone who loves sword and sorcery.
Another great story in this awesome adventure of the Deathsworn Arc. I love the character development, and the trials they each face. Smooth progression, and immersive story telling. The companions are separated, so the chapters swap between characters. I love this kind of storytelling. I'm pretty sure my favorite character right is Fox, with her newfound abilities. I won't spoil it though, go read it for yourself and enjoy this wonderful book.
