Lion of Fire is an upper YA fantasy set in a fascinating magical realm, featuring a college senior who becomes a dangerous wizard with burgeoning powers. With its nostalgic prose style and third person narration, this book is PERFECT for readers who grew up on Percy Jackson and Harry Potter and yearn for a return to this particular brand of portal fantasy, but with a slightly more grown-up vibe!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

"Lion of Fire" is an enchanting coming-of-age tale that brilliantly weaves adventure, friendship, and self-discovery into a rich narrative tapestry. Brittany Ramey's debut novel follows a diverse group of friends
-Logan Reese, Riley Jordan, Caleb Fields, Madeline Gray, and the uniquely human Emma Clark-as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and the extraordinary world that lies beyond the mundane.
Ramey's writing captures the essence of youthful curiosity and the complexities of growing up, reminiscent of beloved classics like "Percy Jackson" and "Narnia." The characters are relatable and well-developed, each bringing their own strengths and vulnerabilities to the group dynamic. The friendships forged amidst magical landscapes and thrilling escapades resonate with the reader, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the trials and triumphs of youth. The world-building in "Lion of Fire" is particularly striking, as Ranew crafts a vivid and imaginative realm that invites readers to explore alongside the protagonists. The blend of myth and reality creates a captivating backdrop for the friends' journey, filled with both danger and discovery.
Ultimately, "Lion of Fire" is a heartwarming exploration of bravery, loyalty, and the transformative power of friendship. Ranew’s storytelling prowess shines through, making this book a delightful read for young adults and anyone young at heart. It's a reminder that the most extraordinary adventures often begin with the bonds we share and the courage we find within ourselves. Highly recommended for fans of magical realism and coming-of-age stories!

Lion of Fire: Riley Jordan and the Fire Prophecies Book One by Brittany Ranew

Lion of Fire is an upper YA fantasy set in a fascinating magical realm, featuring a college senior, Riley Jordan, who becomes a dangerous wizard with rapidly flourishing powers.

With its nostalgic prose style and third person narration, this book is for readers who grew up on Percy Jackson or Harry Potter who yearn for a return to this particular brand of portal fantasy with a more mature vibe.

You will fall in love with the characters as the character development in this book is superb and the group that has come together to help Riley all bring something unique to the table. The world building is very well done and you’ll love the magical realism and mythical creatures contained within. You absolutely feel as if you are exploring this magical world along with the characters in the book.

A true coming of age story with masterful storytelling, I can’t wait to see where this series takes us!

This was such a fun read!! It gave me a wonderful sense of nostalgia and reminded me of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter but of adult ages. Towards the end, I even got some Scooby and the gang vibes!

I enjoyed seeing Riley come into his own skin as the story progressed. Of all the characters, I think Logan was my favorite! He was so funny and was relatable with his humor.

I know some people shy away from pop culture references in their books, but this one did not!! I found the references added to the story and really helped me understand the characters.

I love a good mystery and I love unique magic systems! Brittany Ranew blended magic, mystery, and the modern world into this story seamlessly. I know I’ll be thinking about this book for awhile since I have so many questions! What happens next? What does the prophecy really mean? Does Caleb get an animal friend?

If you’re a fan of strong friendship saving the world with magic, definitely pick this book up!!

‘Lion of Fire’ is the first book of its series and is filled with magical realism, dragons, and mythical creatures. The coming-of-age story begins with Riley Jordan, a college senior and the most dangerous wizard, converging a plot to destroy the world. Riley is plagued, and with the help of his best friends, he has to find the truth and the right path. The journey is adventurous and fun. From the beginning, you are hooked on the story and constantly wonder how things are going to pan out. The characters are well-designed and crafted. They meshed well together.

The cover design was also very appealing. It represented the rich content inside. Scenes have a steady pace to them and contain thrilling elements that add to the enjoyment of the story.

I recommend this book to those interested in fantasy and thought-provoking stories.

INCREDIBLY well written!! Each character has so much story and life built into them! Brittnay put a lot of thought into the scenes, backstories and so much more and it 100% shows!! This read was like a breath of fresh air! Even with the prophecies and dark scenarios, this book stays very light-hearted, comical and fun!

Lion of Fire by Brittany Ranew is book #1 of The Fire Prophecies.
Riley Jordan is a senior in college in the magical realm of Lestoria. Although most of his classmates know their special magic power, Riley hasn't found his. One day, Riley and his three best friends accidentally land in a human girl's bathroom. Instantly, Riley feels a special connection with Emma. He begins to have visions of a dark wizard threatening the elimination of humankind, including Emma. With his best friends by his side, they vow to stop the dark wizard and discover more than they bargain for.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author, Brittany Ranew for sending me an advance copy. This is my honest review.

I thought this book was a delightful read. The pacing was good and I really enjoyed the friendships that Riley and his friends have cultivated. Each of their special magic powers compliment one another. I thought the author did a great job in creating the magical world of Lestoria. The magical creatures, special transportation modes, and creative tunnel systems all add to the world building. Personally, I thought it was refreshing that Riley and Emma's relationship is the slowest of slow burns. I love a book that has yearning, so if you are looking for a spicy book this is not it.

If you enjoy Percy Jackson, a protective MMC, found family, and elemental magic then you will definitely have a fun time reading this book. Honestly, I cannot wait to read book #2 when it comes out in 2026!

Riley, a senior at a magical university, and his three friends stumble into a secret society planning to wipe out all humans. Between visions, prophecies and the usual “chosen one”, Riley discovers he’s the foretold fire wizard meant to save or destroy the world — saving here especially Emma, a „simple, human girl“, who could really use a GPS tracker.

Think Percy Jackson with supposedly older characters but the same voice. A linear plot, no real surprises, not much mystery — and definitely no tension. The world-building leans hard on magical gadgets and transport methods (fun at first, then… not so much). Oh, and the dragon? Very originally named Drake.

Romance? Blink and you’ll miss the chaste cheek kiss. Personally, I’ve moved past YA that’s too clean, too easy, too safe — this one reminded me why. But I can see why others might enjoy it for the straightforward adventure, light magic, and feel-good heroics.

⭐ 3 stars.

This book is for you if you:
• Enjoy Percy Jackson’s language and pacing
• Like your fantasy light on angst and free of trigger warnings
• Appreciate lovingly detailed descriptions of magical gadgets and travel methods

Not for you if:
• You crave tension, depth, or anything spicier than a friendship hug

Lion of Fire was an engaging and entertaining start to a fantasy trilogy that blends magic, prophecy, and portal travel with a modern college setting. The story follows Riley Jordan, a college senior who feels behind in life and unprepared for the magical responsibilities he was born into. When an accident brings Emma, a human from another world, into his orbit, Riley begins experiencing disturbing visions of a future ruled by a dark wizard where Emma plays a central role. As his powers awaken, Riley is forced to confront both the prophecy hanging over him and his own insecurities.
The pacing kept me invested, especially once the portal hopping and larger magical stakes came into play. The friendships between Riley and his companions added warmth and humor, balancing the darker elements of prophecy and impending war. While some parts of the story felt familiar within the genre and a few moments could have used deeper emotional development, the overall journey was exciting and well constructed. This book sets up the larger conflict clearly and left me curious to see how Riley’s role in the prophecy will continue to unfold.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read Lion of Fire in exchange for my honest review. This was, what I like to call, a Contemporary Fantasy (a hidden magical world/school with wizards and dragons, but takes place in present day with many normal things we as the reader would recognize). The main character, Riley, is somewhat of an underdog and you can't help but cheer him on and hope he is successful. His friend group is more like a family and they show strength and support for one another as they go through this journey of discovery to overcome something nefarious. Their banter is is entertaining as well. I'm interested to see what happens next.

I typically read non-fiction but every now and then I want the adventure of a good Fiction book. It was riveting from the beginning! I was caught up in the magical realm of Riley Jordan's world, and really enjoyed the interactions and close bonds with his friends. The whole time I was reading this, I was in Italy on vacation and couldn't wait to read this at the end of every night because I wanted to know what happened next :-) The characters were well developed and I could see this as a movie playing out in my mind. Now that I'm done with this book, I can't wait for the second book to come out. I want to see what Riley and his friends are doing next and I'm curious about a couple of the characters which I won't give away in this review. Highly recommend!

First and foremost, a huge thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reading copy (eARC) of this spectacular debut! Lion of Fire is everything you could possibly want in a gripping upper YA fantasy. The Lit Whisperer's analysis confirms that this book delivers a phenomenal opening to a prophecy-driven series. The plot is great—it moves with a relentless energy, throwing the protagonist into dangerous situations and high-stakes choices that are compelling and believable. Beyond the action, the settings are sublime, feeling richly realized and vividly brought to life; you can practically feel the heat and magic emanating from the page. With a satisfying conclusion and a host of unanswered questions, I am eagerly waiting for book 2!

This YA fantasy sweeps you into a world of fire, magic, humor, and twists driven by intricate prophecies. At its center is a loyal group of four friends fighting to keep magic users from being extinguished—a mission that becomes more dangerous and emotional than any of them expect. The story balances action and heart beautifully, with a fire dragon that absolutely steals the show.

While it carries echoes of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, the book stands out with its own unique flare, modern tone, and creative magic system. Engaging, funny, and full of spark.
Note: does contain some language.

I really enjoyed this book! The magic, high stakes, and prophecy really kept me engaged! There were parts of the dialogue that didn’t feel like college seniors. The magic system was mildly confusing but not enough to take away from the story. Riley and his friends are so supportive and never have to doubt that they have each other's backs! I’ll definitely be looking for the next book in this series!

I enjoyed Miss Brittany Ranew’s book! It was full of adventure, strong friendships, intrigue, fantasy, and cool sci-fi elements. The sweet blooming relationship between Riley and Emma was adorable and didn’t have any unnecessary spice, only sweet moments that made me smile, giggle, and root for! I love how each character balanced the story and each other. My only negative comment is the amount of language. I would still recommend this book though!

This is great fantasy book. The first in a series this book reminds me of fablehaven and keepers of the lost cities. The characters are so compelling and I hope we see more character growth from everyone. The world building is unique and is a mix of urban and magical fantasy. Overall, i had a great time reading this

This was such a fun read. It was filled with magic, prophecies and adventure. An adventure that I felt like I haven't taken in a long while. I found the writing easy to fall into and the aspect of Magic and Wizards was so interesting and unique in its own way. The characters were enjoyable, and I grew to love them as I read through the pages. I can't wait to see how this adventure continues!

I really enjoyed the plot of this book, but I struggled with The way the dialogue is written making the characters feel much younger than college seniors.

But the plot? Five stars. I’m intrigued by the prophecy revealed at the end, how Emma fits into the whole picture, and everything that is yet to come.

This is a really interesting story dealing with a college for people with magic. There is a tight group of 4 in the college that will end up taking on a huge task to help save many. They have a friendship that reminds me of Harry Potter. It was a fun read with plenty of action.
