I’ve always been obsessed with my best friend. Now we’re stuck together for three days in a small-town motel… And we have to share a bed.
Callum
Driving home for spring break with my best friend should have been just a straightforward trip back to our families. But when my pickup truck breaks down in the middle of nowhere, we’re left stranded at a small-town motel with only one bed.
We’ve been inseparable since junior year of high school, sharing everything—late-night talks, our deepest secrets, dreams—except the one thing I've been hiding for the past five
I’m hopelessly obsessed with him.
I can’t get him out of my mind, even when we’re around each other. But if he ever discovers the truth, it could destroy our friendship. The longer we're stuck together, the harder it becomes to keep my feelings hidden, and the closer I come to risking everything we've built.
Motel Fever is a cute 16,000-word MM romance novella featuring snarky friends to lovers, only one bed, and two obsessed college boys who learn to open their hearts and embrace the motel fever. It contains explicit scenes.

“I’ve been trying to make you jealous for the last three years,” REALLY BITCH?????? THIS IS THE STUPIDEST SHIT I'VE EVER HEARD 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 WHY DID YOUU SAYYYYY THATTTTTTTTTT????? IF I CATCH YOU IFFFF I CATCH YOU 💀💀💀
These two were so cute, great chemistry and really read like they’d been friends for years. Really think these idiots in love should communicate better but I think the author just likes 3rd act tiffs. I think novellas are way too short for that but I still liked the characters and story ❤️
this was an adorable, super low angst novella. i usually read a novella and feel like i wasn’t fulfilled, but this wasn’t like that at all. this was so freaking cute, best friends (the codependent kind) who get stuck at a motel (the single bed kind 😉).
Callum is driving them both home for Spring break, when his truck breaks down. It will be three days for it to be fixed, so they need to find the nearest motel.
Callum has had a crush on Milo for years, but Milo is straight, or so he thought. Sharing a room and bed should not be an issue, should it?
This short, sweet, steamy story, is full of love and charm with low angst. If you want a fast, best friends to lovers, only one bed book, then this is right up your street.
I loved the first book Snow Angel from Sierra Bennett's series Close Quarters. I knew i would instantly love this too.
“I’m in an unfamiliar bed, surrounded by the smell of cherries and fresh sweat, a large hand splayed across my stomach. It dawns on me all at once. I’m cuddling my best friend”.
2.5🌟 I don’t even know what to say. What do you mean you been sleeping around to get me jealous because your mouth is sewn you can’t open your mouth and communicate? Then when asked why with condoms, were you planning to sleep with someone, he said yes and lastly.the best they could do was say I like you after all those feelings for each other? Aside that the one bed and friends to lovers was cute.
To pre-empt my review, I do rate novellas on a curve where you don’t have the room to fully flesh out a huge plot. It’s also why I think friends to lovers is really the only trope that works in this format, as you don’t need a lot of plot to make a HEA believable.
I read a few of the other reviews and it almost put me off, but when I saw it was a novella I decided to give it a go as it wasn’t a big time commitment, and I’m so glad I did. I really enjoyed it! I hardly ever write reviews, but I don’t think this deserves the lower rating it has and wanted to give my personal opinion.
I also want to advise, I do rank my ratings purely on my enjoyment of the book, I don’t do in depth analysis on writing style/ character expansion/ plot intricacies etc.
*** Spoilers
I think where most negative comments were focused on Milo’s reasons for sleeping around while being in love with his best friend, which is what I felt the need to talk about as I read it completely differently.
Milo does make a throwaway comment to Cal that he’s been trying to make him jealous for the last 3 years, but I don’t take this as him purposefully hurting his friend because he didn’t want to communicate. He genuinely doesn’t know Cal likes him like that, has no idea it hurts him and wants to prompt any feelings that might take him out of the friendship category.
Also Milo establishes early on that he doesn’t equate sex with love and that he’s scared of losing people he cares about:
"Sex is easy without feelings," he says. "You can't get hurt if you weren't attached in the first place. It makes it easier when they leave. I don't think I could handle it if you—if anyone I cared about left me."
As it’s only one POV (which I do understand in a novella, it helps keep the story on track), it is difficult to know Milo’s motivations, but to me he was so clearly in love but scared to lose his best friend.
I adored both Cal and Milo, and feel like I genuinely believe in their HEA lasting which isn’t always the impression I have after finishing a book, especially in novellas which rely too much on insta-love.

Continuing on a TBR/Beat-The-Backlog kick (and ignoring my ARCs kick). Here's "Motel Fever" by Sierra Bennett. It's the second novella in her Close Quarters series. Now sure when I read the first one, but GoodReads says I did so...
["I’ve always been obsessed with my best friend. Now we’re stuck together for three days in a small-town motel… And we have to share a bed.

A little cliche, but a lot sweet. This story was about trusting yourself and being brave and second shots at communication. It was about memories and togetherness and doing something that scares you.
This is such a cute, friends to lovers, mutual pining novella.💛
Tropes: - Best friends to lovers - One bed - Forced proximity
Callum has been obsessed with his best friend Milo for a long time. During their trip home for spring break they get stranded at a small town motel, thanks to Cal’s car breaking down, where coincidentally they have to share one bed.
I really enjoyed getting to know Cal and Milo and seeing how they realized they feel the same way about each other. The story made me feel a wide range of emotions: from pining and angst to passion and heartwarming happiness.
Despite this being a short story I still got the perfect picture of who these guys are and I instantly felt connected to them.
The only thing I wish I could have seen was Milo’s POV especially on how he felt about sharing the same bed with Cal.
Things I loved: 💛 Milo and Cal constantly touching, limbs tangled every time they sit together 💛 Milo spooning Cal in the mornings 💛 “I have an obsession with every part of you”
Thank you so much for the author Sierra Bennett for the opportunity to read this book in advance in exchange for my honest review.
Sweet novella about 2 childhood best friends who drive home from college in order for each of them to take care of some family matters. Callum, who is gun shy and inexperienced, has been obsessed with Milo since middle school. The most important thing for Callum is that they don't lose their friendship, since that has happened to him before in high school. Milo has been hooking up with other boys for years and Callum wishes he could tell Milo about his feelings.
On their drive home, Callum's truck breaks down and they have to stay at a motel until it gets fixed. Oops - there is only one bed (love this trope)!
Callum and Milo take a journey home with some bumps in the road, but in the end, they find each other in this short, sweet, and somewhat steamy story.
What to expect:
* idiots in love * friends to lovers * forced proximity/one bed * cherry cologne * tattoed hottie MC who loves Lord of the Rings/fantasy and birds * sweet, sentimental virgin MC who wants to give the other one a bird :) * first times * miscommunication * mentions of family drama * 3.5 rounded up
Thanks to the author Sierra Bennett for the ARC - this is my honest review.
P 2/5 Easy simple plotting. I do feel like the book needed to be longer to develop better E 3/5 I think i'm so easy to entertain. I don't dislike miscommunication trope when it gets resolved quickly, and i do enjoy the hurt/angst that comes from them, so i guess this hit that nice sweet spot A 4/5 easy to follow writing, but there were some bits that hit me right in the feels. C 2/5 omg. Milo. so you just slept around hoping to make Cal jealous? that part pissed me off so bad. And Cal...that last part pissed me off. the guy you've liked all this time sleeps with you and tells you he likes you (in not so many words) and you...push him away? yeah that makes sense H 2/5 I think I would have liked it better if it was longer and taking out Milo's reasoning for sleeping around. Also, if they made a legit reason for Cal turning away Milo, like maybe he's scared to admit his sexuality or something...lacked a lot, even for a novella
This is a best friends to more romance novella, featuring Callum and Milo, and is the second book in the Close Quarters series.
The story focuses on the spring break from college and the road trip Callum and Milo take to their hometown. They end up breaking down and get stuck in a motel for a few days, that has one bed. Woo hoo!
This low-angst book contains a bit of spice, a beautiful co-dependent friendship and is full of pining from both MMCs - with one scared to ruin their friendship because of what happened to him in the past. I really enjoyed this it and you can read it without reading the first one in the series but I recommend reading that one too.
Things to expect in this MM romance are: Best friends to more Forced proximity / One bed Pining from both MMCs Virgin MC Reluctant from the past First times Low angst HEA
The only thing about novellas that make them hard to read is that they are often too short for what the story or plot could be.
The language for Motel Fever felt just the slightest bit juvenile to me for the MCs that are supposed to be in their early twenties. It sounded a bit like they're still stuck as teenagers in high school.
There's very little character information or development. I'm not sure if these MCs are in Sierra Bennet's book Snow Angel, as I haven't read it yet, but even if so, we're not given quite enough information about each of the MCs to find a connection or something to relate to. I know that novellas are often short of some of this pertinent information, so I can't really complain too much, but it was a little bit of a negative in my take of the story altogether.
It's a cute, short story and I enjoyed reading it, even with wishing for more from it overall. Hopefully there will be a third book in the series to cover their mentioned friends Spencer & Luke.
I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
I really liked reading this book. The characters were really well written and they were destined to be together.
I was very impressed with the way the author was able to describe all the complicated feelings in such a limited amount of words.
The novella is a quick read which makes it absolutely perfect for people who would like to start reading MM romance.
These characters were just amazing and i fell in love with their personality very quickly. I recommend this book for anyone who is curious about MM romance and would like to check it out.
The forced proximity and one bed scenario’s will never fail to make me fall in love with a story. 🧡🫶🏼
Tropes: - Friends to Lovers - Forced Proximity - One bed - Mutual Pining
This was a very sweet novella about two best friends who love the other but can't find the words to share their feelings.
Considering this is a short novella, Milo and Callum are very good and well rounded characters and you're really rooting for them to get together and tell the other how they feel!
It's the perfect story to help you out of a slump, or if you just need something short and sweet - that will give you everything you need in a love story!🥰
A road trip gone wrong turns into confusion then understanding. Milo and Cal are best friends and totally in love with the other but too afraid to change the dynamics. Cal had a poor experience with a BFF who betrayed and left him but he feels that if Milo were to leave him, he would not survive. A small town motel, a few drinks and a broken truck allows them to explore their connection but panic sets in for Cal and he abandoned the ship they were building. A big sister and a duh moment brings these two together they way they were always meant to be!
I loved the premise and secret love which bordered on obsession for these two guys. At the end, there was WAY TOO MUCH miscommunication and lack of honestly. These 2 are more than best friends but instead of being honest, the one guy was brutal and caused too much heartbreak for both, by denying his feelings. He really hurt his bestie with his words and actions. I needed more romance and spice. They’ve been besties who love each other for years and still can’t even say it. We get “I really like you” 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thank you Sierra Bennett for this ARC! I recommend this one to people who want to start reading MM books because this is a very cute, easy to read book. I loved their friendship and the way they were so comfortable around each other. Callum is such a softie for Milo, that man is obsessed. One bed trope will get me every time.
"When we were sixteen, he smiled at me like that for the first time in a dingy high school bathroom and, five years later, it still makes my heart stutter"🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
I LOVED this book!!! It’s novella length but packs the gut punch of a much longer book. It started off with the pining, which I’m totally a sucker for, and progressed to some serious steam only to tear my heart out and stomp on it. If you enjoy MM, you do NOT want to miss this. 5 AMAZINGLY AWESOME STARS!!
This was a sweet little read with no drama but there was a lot of pining. 😂
● Contemporary ● Quick easy read ● Best friends to lovers ● Road trip ● Unexpected Motel stay ● One bed ● Lots of cuddling ● Very sweet ● Loved the MCs ● Wish there was more (but I always do with novellas) ● Satisfying enough HEA ● Short, under 75 pages
I can’t afford to lose another best friend because of my weird feelings. - Callum
I liked this second novella more than the first one. This novella had more of a story, they talked more with each other and their family. This novella also has one POV
There was only one (single bed, for one) bed so there wasn't a lot of room.
The first book was really cute and I couldn’t wait to get into this and I’ll be honest it started out so similar to the first I was worried but overall it had the same type of “one room one bed plot” and the same feel but was mildly different. Overall good writing and a cute little short. The weird part for me is that is seems to mild on spice in some spots like a shy book then delve on others. Be shy or go for it because it’s a little confusing. Overall a great read
ARC review... I really enjoyed this fluffy, light hearted, coming of age novella. The characters feel deeply, discover their truths, and get their much deserved happily ever after. Sierra Bennett hits all the right notes.
A short but insanely sweet read! I loved this novella, it had me in my feelings! It was well written and you could easily feel Callum’s longing for Milo! I did tear up whilst reading it! I do wish we got to read Milo’s POV but I’m not mad about it being all from Callum’s!
Another cute, short, fun read in this series. I would highly recommend not reading this back to back with the first book, as they have a lot of similarities. However, taken on its own, it’s enjoyable.
Cute fluff for a late summer evevning. The story is only 60 pages, so very straight forward. The final "conflict" wasn't exactly what I was hoping - I felt like it made little sense - but all in all it was short and quick and I did not get too annoyed.
