Cocky Roommate is by Claire Kingsley. I probably should admit before anything else, that I just might be a little bit in love with this author. If you read my review for Book Boyfriend, You know that I was completely bowled over by the book. Now, in this one, we are getting to know Alex’s sister, Kendra, who is also his editor. And you will also meet Weston Reid, her new roommate.

sexy doctor

Weston is a plastic surgeon and is friends with Alex and Kendra’s brother, Caleb. His house is getting remodeled and he needs a place to stay for a few months. I will warn you that in the beginning, Weston makes it VERY hard to like him. He’s a player, or should I say, Man-whore. He has no interest in any sort of relationship. Sex is a way to release his stress, nothing more.

“Girlfriend is not a word in my vocabulary. Nor are words like dating or I’ll text you later.”

You will notice, though, that Weston keeps everyone at a distance. He’s built a sort of wall around himself. The way he talks to Kendra in the beginning is terrible. He’s abrupt, rude, you name it. But something happens that tilts Weston’s world on it’s axis. There is no one there for him at all, no one comes to help him, except Kendra. She’s there for him when no one else is.

Cocky Roommate - Claire Kingsley

“There’s something about that smile. He usually swings between stoic and cocky, but this is somewhere in between. It’s like I’m getting a tiny glimpse into the real Weston. The guy under the armor.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever met a more confusing, infuriating, aggravating…yet intriguing and captivating man.”

Weston starts to really see Kendra and his heart begins to open. He has never been in a relationship, never had the smallest interest in committing to one woman. But she makes him want something more, something that means something. He wants to protect her, make her smile, make her happy. He wants her to be his. Watching this man fall was such a beautiful sight.

Cocky Roommate - Claire Kingsley

Weston and Kendra’s journey is not an easy one. Weston has no experience at all with expressing himself, the words don’t come easy. But Kendra seems to understand him. She seems to accept him. These two steam up the pages with their chemistry. And Weston did redeem himself. That man made me sigh, and he made me swoon, more than once.

Man kissing woman.

I loved this book like crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a hero as much as I did in the beginning and then ended up loving his so much as I did Weston. I knew there had to be a reason why he was the way he was. It was just a matter of getting to know him better. Claire Kingsley has managed to captivate me once again with this book. I can’t wait to read their brother Caleb’s story in Hot Single Dad. I am so glad I have found this author.

Beware of Spoilers!

Star Ratings:
Heroine (Kendra): 20s?
Hero (Weston): douchebag
Plot: 1/5
Grovel: DNF
Cheating: DNF
HEA: DFN
Triggers: DFN

Average score: 1/5

Best Line: NONE!!!!!!

Worst Line: when he first saw the h: “Did they not have a mirror wherever she woke up this morning? Jesus.” And “She’s got her arms crossed over her flat chest; she probably never filled out a training bra”

Personal Review:
DNF’d at chapter 7. ‘Hero’ was an OTT asshole in general and especially towards the heroine.

Random Ramblings:
•What kind of guy brings a one night stand to his first night in a home with a roommate??
•Wow he is an asshole
•OH MY GOD…I want to slap him and junk punch him!! He is so superficial and mean to the heroine just because he doesn’t like the way she looks
•I am desperately hoping the H has some redeemable qualities because so far he is not looking good and I am only on chapter 2
•What a clueless dipshit...I am so close to DNF’ing
•Do I really need to read a whole scene on him picking up OW??!!

Overall Feeling:

I am so pleased I read Book Boyfriend first because this hero was not worth my time

“it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve fucked a girl under the covers with a roommate sleeping nearby”

This guy made me so angry

This was seriously, ridiculously cute, and funny and wonderful. I seem to have a thing for grumpy male characters paired with sunshiny women. I like that this was a believable hate(ish)-to-love story without them being awful to each other. Their chemistry is believable and the way the relationship slowly progresses is beautiful. I didn't love the big gesture (it features one of my personal horror scenarios for how somebody could apologize to me - so that is a definite me-thing), but I loved the rest of the ending.

This book is romantic, sexy, and FUN, FUN, FUN. This is the story of Kendra, a freelance writer who recently quit her day job and needs the additional income a roommate would bring while her own business takes off the ground. Weston is a doctor that is remodeling his house and needs a place to stay until the contractor finishes the work at his home. This is how the book starts but what follows is a fun, romantic ride.

The book is told from the alternating points of view of Kendra and Weston. The characters have their quirks and the interactions with each other is what makes you want to keep turning those pages. Everything was great but I felt the end was a bit rushed, I will not give any details but I do encourage you to go ahead and read this wonderful novel. I will now go ahead and read the author's other works because I feel she's going to become a favorite.

Overall I enjoyed this book and recommend it to all those who love fun, romantic stories.

I can't say if this book is good or bad but the hero is such a douchebag, I can't stand him. And I'm not interested in continuing. Maybe I'll try the next book.

Despite the strange and unappealing title I liked the love story. Not my favorite trope, but I found it quite palpable, more believable than some variants I’ve encountered.

DNF at Chapter 2.

Yes, chapter 2. That is the "hero's" first POV chapter. That is the one where we, the reader, get our first impression of the "hero". Not through a third party's eyes because that could be deceiving. But we are in his own head. And it is a gaping asshole of a head.

I am sure that somehow he will be shown to be misunderstood or is really a nice person who just needs the love of a good woman. But his assholery is just so huge and awful in an entire chapter as told by him that I refuse to spend any more time in his company. So tired of jerks needing to be redeemed...

I’m definitely in the minority here but this book didn’t work for me at all.

Weston is not a good person. I know he gives free surgeries to women who can’t afford breast augmentation after they’re in remission for breast cancer but… doing something good doesn’t mean a person is good. He was dealt a bad set of cards - his dad is a dick who cheated on and ignored his mother, his mother died of breast cancer when he was 11 - but instead of working through any of that he uses band aid solutions that seem to mainly consist of quick hook ups. He has the emotional range of a teaspoon, doesn’t care that his surgeon co-worker is cheating on his wife of 20 years and continues to go to bars with him to pick up women, he doesn’t respect his “closest friend” Caleb enough to be even cordial to his sister - who he’s living with as a favor. Please tell me how or why I’m supposed to think that “because he’s hot and tortured he’s okay.”

I hate when heroes are assholes and then rely on the heroine to do all the emotional labor for them.

Audiobook Review

Overall 4.5 stars
Narration 4.5 stars
Story 4.5 stars

I was so excited to start Kendra's story after meeting her in Book Boyfriend! Initially, I was a little turned off by the hero, Weston, because when we first meet him, he is a grade A, world class a-hole! He says some incredibly rude and offensive things to Kendra and it was hard not to feel the hurt and anger right along with her at his callous remarks. I love a good anti-hero though, and Claire Kingsley did a fantastic job of showing that there was much more to Weston than what we are led to believe. Don't get me wrong, he really is a jerk at times, but I liked that he didn't come to some miraculous epiphany and completely change. He's learning and changing, but there are going to be growing pains and missteps. Ultimately, I loved that Kendra could see through the masks and with a little forced confinement (hello, roommate!), Weston saw her too. The ending and epilogue was wonderful and though things moved quickly, it worked well given Weston and Kendra's personalities.

Teddy Hamilton was perfect as always and I loved his narration as Weston! He is always the right amount of sexy and sweet, without being over the top. Lucy Rivers is a new to me narrator and she was a little more serious sounding than I imagined bubbly Kendra to be, but I still really enjoyed her performance. Some of the chapters were more emotional and I thought she really shined during those moments. I do wish that Claire Kingsley's afterword in the ebook would have been included with the audio. It explains a lot of the author's thought process behind Weston's character and gives a lot of insight into his actions and motivations. I definitely recommend checking it out after finishing the audio if you get a chance.

Catching up with Mia, Alex, and Caleb was great and I found Mia's analysis about the 3 types of a-holes not only accurate but also very entertaining! ;) I'm really looking forward to Caleb's book next! As much as I enjoy an anti-hero, nothing beats an all around good guy with a heart of gold!

This is by far my favorite story by this author! All of her works are amazing but this was the story that I will read again. The story starts out with Kendra coming home from a business trip to her home and having coffee with her “new roommate” only to find out that she is the one night stand of her real roommate: Weston. The hate-to-lovers aspect of this story was great and I really loved the push and pull between the characters and their new developing feelings.

Kendra is the ultimate woman that one would want as a best friend. She is sweet, sassy, loyal, caring and amazingly multifaceted. Weston is an alpha male who has been hurt in the past and doesn’t know how to deal with his emotions and feelings. He is seen in the story and by others as uncaring and cold but I truly believe that he was not taught how to be open and there for comes off as disinterested or harsh.

The humor between the characters, the secondary characters, the plot and the development of this story really added to the richness. I read the story and then sat and thought about it for a while. There was something about this story that just hit all the right buttons. I could not put a finger on it until last night, lying in bed, I had a light bulb moment. This is the perfect 1980’s John Hughes movie material.

It has the main female character (Kendra) that is sassy, strong, but a bit unsure of her future; the alpha male (Weston) who is a bit of a jerk and disliked in the first half of the story. It has the best friend who is the background heart of the story and keeps the heart and positivity flowing. It has all the amazing secondary characters that add depth and great lines. And it as the happy ever after that we all expect. I don’t know, maybe it is just me, but I feel like if John Hughes was still alive this is just the story he would make into a blockbuster romantic movie.

Ok this was cute 🤭

4/5☆
3/5 🌶

The plot is very predictable, but its the theme with this series. Just a fun read with the usual drama of roommates.

We have a man whore, someone who doesn't let anyone get close, doesn't do girlfriends kind of a guy. People I usually loathe in books, but here I am drooling after him 🧎‍♀️
He is so cute. I don't know why I tried to avoid reading this 😭 It was so enjoyable.

Kendra is in need of a roommate so her brother, Caleb recommends she live with his colleague and she agrees. But Kendra is shocked to discover her new roommate isn’t a woman, but a bad boy plastic surgeon named Weston. The two get off on the wrong foot and couldn’t be more different. Weston is rude, cold, self-centered and completely opposed to all of Kendra’s friendship attempts.

Somewhere along the way, Kendra grows on Weston and he tones down his asshole behavior, which turns into a friendship. But we all know how that goes…their friendship turns into so much more and complicates their already complicated living situation…

Cocky Roommate by Claire Kingsley is book 2 in the Book Boyfriends series. I really enjoyed Kendra & Weston’s relationship! They were really cute together and I loved their banter. I wasn’t expecting to shed a few tears at the end, but I did. Definitely recommend this romcom series and can’t wait for book 3, which is Caleb’s single dad romance. 4/5 stars.

There's nothing like finding a hot, sexy, broody alpha asshole.

It's one of those things that happens often. Cocky, arrogant, and broody all rolled into one neat little (well, not little) package. Add in a phobia for relationships, money, and the ability to push people away and you've got yourself the perfect Alpha Asshole.

Meet Weston.

He's that perfect culmination of all the things you want in your Book Boyfriend. And he is the last thing Kendra expected when her brother, Caleb, said he had a colleague who needed a place to stay for a while.

I couldn't put this book down. I mean, I had to, but only because I have a job and that job does not allow me to sit around with a book in my hand. So, Weston and Kendra are, like, the perfect match. Weston is all super asshole, but you know there's more to him. You're given glimpses into why he behaves the way he does. And Kendra. Well, you met Kendra in Book Boyfriend. She was smart and sassy and just so giving and caring. It's no surprise she is the perfect roommate.

I know I said you could find those asshole traits in any book boyfriend, but they won't look quite as good on anyone else. Weston wears that arrogant asshole card with such style that I couldn't resist him. You won't be able to resist him either.

And just know he does the big gesture. If you did read Book Boyfriend and you managed to meet Alex and Mia, just know that Weston's grand gesture is better than Alex's grand gesture. And that says so, so much.

I've already downloaded the next book. This series is that good.

Hero is a womanizer and asshole. He treats her rudely.
Heroine is cool and needs someone to share the rent.
Nothing exceptional in history. More of the same.
An ok reading.

“I’m sure Weston Reid has been called many things. Sexy. Brooding. Cocky. Mysterious, maybe. But adorable? I can see why you don’t get that a lot. I don’t think many people see you the way I do.”

“The point is, we make mistakes. We say things we don’t mean.” He pauses, holding my gaze. “And sometimes those screw-ups have pretty shitty consequences.”

Ok so here we go. Has anyone out there ever put any thoughts into the important role Blurb Writers' who write the blurbs for the books play? I highly doubt it's the writers themselves, because, had the way in which some blurbs spin the plot to titillate and interest readers, occurred to them, they'd have surely written the book like that in the first place? At any rate the blurb for this book was a bit misguiding. The "messy haired, pajama pants wearing ball of sass" leads one to believe that there would be real humour and banter in the book, not used up, tired dialogues, and that the heroine would bring a refreshing depth and excitement in the story, which never happened. The blurb sketches the picture of an impetuous, funny, interesting, confident, heroine who really does make friends with a random girl her roommate had brought home last night. All the possiblilities that this simple sketch create in the readers' brain have immense potential to be interesting. What we get instead is a nice, respectable, boring case of mistaken identity in the very first pages, never to be repeated again. And the hero. Ok from the brilliant way the blurb spinned the story, you get the impression that the hero is a jerk, who has some hitherto unsuspected depths of feeling, which renders him mysterious and interesting, and he's aware of his surroundings including his roommate. But what you in fact get, is a whiny, oblivious, blank headed surgeon!!!! who seemingly doesn't even have a clue that he has to show the barest minimal amount of respect to his only friend's sister, who's let him move in her house temporarily. But this person is so brilliant that he overcame the hurdle of dyslexia to become a first rate surgeon in his own right. However said surgeon of immeasurable talent, this font of success, this sun king of boob augmenters, pouts and throws tantrums when his father is being mean to him. Boo hoo! And let's not even delve into the messy way the father is depicted. If you want to show he's a jerk u need to put more work in building that character, who even though rarely makes an appearance, seems to play a big role in your hero's psyche, than to simply rely on "literary devices". I think the hero was the biggest let down of the story. Funnily enough, the heroine who's an editor is shown having a discussion about the hero in her client's romance novel and they both say since it's a romance book, the hero needs to be good in the bedroom. And well, we all know the best heroes aren't good at everything but they have to be fantastic at a few things, and for me a hero's strength of character and sense of honour(in all its shapes and forms) is what need to be fantastic and the most important item of all. Sometimes even if the whole book is a mess the hero manages to rescue all. In this case the whole thing remained a mess.

Oh! And the last scene. Spoiler warning. Aren't we tired of grand gestures already? Haven't they lost their poignancy in this age of exhibitionism? Nowadays a private happy birthday and a hand written note, has come to mean so much more than a public declaration, in front of friends and frenemies in Facebook, or you tube or in the middle of parties and weddings. It's just so silly to grab the mike at the heroine's brother's wedding and say sorry for not calling her for more than a week. Have the guts to show up at her door and grovel like a man, you lazy jerk! But that's just me. I'm one of those eye-rollers when I come across couples who write odes to each other on special days, wish their spouses happy birthday or happy anniversary, or vow eternal love on valentine day in instagram, Facebook, or other social media. My devilish spirit who resides on my left shoulders bends to my ear and whispers: me thinks they doth protest too much!

This is Cocky Roommate, book 2 of Claire Kingsley’s Book Boyfriend series.
I really enjoyed Book Boyfriend, but I loved Cocky Roommate. I'm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers, and this one did it sooooo well.

The dynamic between Weston and Kendra was amazing! They were great together with off charts chemistry.

The humor between the characters, and the secondary characters really added to the richness. Such a pleasant read. This author is becoming one of my favorites.

Yersen tabii. Özetle bunu da öyle çok severek okumadım.

Claire Kingsley should have entitled this Asshole Roommate. Weston Reid was an A-class douche bag of note. He is in need of accommodation while his house is being renovated. A friend of his offers his sisters place. From the get-go Weston is the absolute pits. Mean. Surly. Rude. And a playboy of note. Kendra Lawson, a freelance editor, was far too good for him. She was kind, sweet and caring despite Weston's shitty attitude. A love/hate trope, this book had the usual elements with the forced proximity factor ratcheting things up. Ultimately Kendra was the best thing that could have happened to Weston. His process of transformation was great to see. And his use of the endearment baby made me like him a little more.

All in all this was an okay read with the usual elements expected. I look forward to reading the last and final book in the series next.

It was such a cliche. The story, the characters. It was just done so many times. And if you tired of cliche formula: sweat good girl + asshole guy = HEA, I don't think it's for you. But if you ignore it, the book ends up being quite an ejoyable read. It was sweat and fun, with just enough smut. I think if it was longer and a little bit more in depth, it would had a real emotional kick. For now it was just an easy read without a need to think too much while reading it. But overall, it was a good read. 3.5 stars.

I have heard nothing but great things about this book and though I hadn't read book one(about another couple who appears in this book) I decided to give it a try. I liked this book at times I loved this book but then there were times when I just wasn't connected. I almost stopped reading this one but I kept going and like I said when I loved it I loved it, and I'm glad I read it and even with me not enjoying every minute of this book I flew through it(which is weird for me).

The hero starts off as a jerk and yes he is a jerk, but he really turns it around. I loved him he's selfish on the surface but thats what he lets people see and once he comes around he is nothing short of amazing. He gets around before they meet and I mean disgustingly too much, but there is no one else after they meet though I love a jerk who turns it around and that is defiantly what Weston does. And once we see more of his life we kind of see why he is so stand offish.

The heroine(Kendra) is patient and kind and nothing the hero thought he would ever want. I loved her and Weston together. Kendra is way too good for the hero at the beginning but like I said they are amazing once he gets his head of his butt. The story isn't complicated Kendra needs a roommate and her brother volunteers a colleague. Thinking her new roommate is a woman Kendra is shocked to see that her new roommate is actually Weston who just happens to have a girls at her house when they meet. Weston is rich, smart, a doctor and handsome(and he knows it), Kendra is beneath him but he needs a place to stay till his home is finished being remodeled.

Kendra is way to patient with Weston but then something happens and Weston see's what type of woman she really is and he can't deny the attraction even though he's never spend more than one night with a woman, he finds himself enjoying his time with Kendra. Kendra saw him and was instantly attracted to him but never expected to become friends with him and never in a million years would have thought he would kiss her, and once thats done theres no taking it back. But nothing can be easy for a guy with so much baggage especially when he's never even considered keeping a woman.

As I said I loved Weston he more than makes up for his jerky self and then some, which is what I love in books. The story was sweet and fun, I think my issue was it just dragged at some points. I wasn't sure what I would rate this one but thinking about it I enjoyed so much of it I am actually rating it higher. I loved seeing Weston wrestle with his jealousy, he literally had no idea what to do with it and was shocked by it. We get a great hea and even with all we see about who he used to be I really believed the hea. Not only do we get a great hea but we also get some really funny moments in this book.

*One of my favorite quotes from Weston,
"I clenched my fists and swallowed hard. Don't wait up? what the f*ck does that mean? Does she think she's going to hook up with some guy tonight? Well, f*ck you, whoever you are; she whispers my name when she comes." (this is before they are together)

the writing really put me off on this one lol

there's just something about people trying to write from the perspective of someone whose gender identity is completely opposite to theirs that, when done the way this book did, rubs me the wrong way.

it felt very forced a lot of the time and had a lot of cliched lines? although honestly i don't know what i was expecting.

i enjoyed it for some parts, but the writing with weston really drew a big question mark for me. he really went from caveman stereotypical sharp-angles asshole to....... frustrated teenager who are feeling feelings for the first time and thinks everything is stupid and then rainbows and puppies and unicorns in love? women writing men this way really just 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴 (and vice versa too)
