Jangan Percaya Surat Palsu

Rate this book

This is a book of sorrowful stories: conflicts, loss of dialects and traditional knowledge, environmental destruction, land disputes, and military oppression.

Yet, it is also a valuable lesson in how to narrate sensitive firsthand accounts with care and preparation. Linda Chrisanty not only crafts a compelling and sensible narrative, but she also conducts thorough research into each conflict, the land’s history, and its cultural context. However, she doesn’t take sources at face value. She engages directly with local communities, critically assessing each claim.

Because history, after all, is often blurred by competing narratives. What we learn from textbooks can be starkly different from the testimonies of those who lived through these events.

This critical approach is particularly evident in her examination of the 1999 Ambon conflict. Often misrepresented as a purely religious conflict, Chrisanty uncovers how the narrative was inflamed and even constructed by the ruling regime at the time, in part through the circulation of a forged letter. This fact is further corroborated by the locals whom she interviewed and were more than eager to set the record straight.

This revelation serves as a stark reminder that history can be manipulated, and that questioning dominant narratives is crucial in the pursuit of truth.

An eye opener. Beyond its compelling storytelling, Jangan Percaya Surat Palsu serves as a reminder of how narratives can be manipulated and how history is often shaped by those in power. It challenges readers to question official accounts and to consider the perspectives of those who lived through the conflict.
