Coaching Success: Creating Champions for the Business World

Rate this book
People management is at the heart of all business function and dysfunction. A strong correlation exists between success in the world of sports and success in the world of business. Management is "coaching" in the business arena. In Coaching Success, Timmons lays out the fundamental principles of teambuilding, play by play. Using sports analogies; good, sound management basics are skillfully woven into an enjoyable narrative. The book is a quick read; it doesn’t require a huge commitment of a busy manager’s time but provides immediate payback. And the clever use of the "playbook" device highlights key points for easy reference. Coach Murph and the lessons he imparts (as well as learns) will stick with new managers long after they’ve turned the last page. For the beginning manager, it's a playbook. For the experienced, a reminder of what's important.

Tim's book is extraordinarily readable. The kind of read that will warm the hearts of any sports fan, Hoosier, down-to-earth person. TJ Murphy is the type of person who makes mistakes (he's not a fan of "entitlement" thinking about raises like COLA, he's sometimes blunt about others' health, and he's a fan of work comes first), but his ability to create a sense of ownership and agency in languishing people make this a good turnaround story. Better yet, Tim doesn't shy away from co-leaders who can't be won over or fully understood, which is one of life's basic leadership realities.

I could turn this to a five in the future, as I did bookmark several places, but fives are reserved for the stuff that sticks with me for years.
