Karma is a much-awaited horror fiction by the author. It is one of those rare books that I managed to finish in a single sitting, and that too within a few hours of the book being delivered to my doorstep.
Reason?
Karma is captivating right from the first page, and it instantly engaged me with it. Through out the story, there were enough suspense elements and surprises that hooked me till the end. Horror has been my favorite genre since childhood, and hence I’m always looking for a good horror story, either written or visual. Karma is one of those horror stories that isn’t only good, but it is one of the best in the Indian horror space. Karma’s horror isn’t typical, filled with jump scares, and ghosts popping out from under the bed or the closet. It is subtle, slow-burn, and sensitive. The portrayal of the characters is very humane, and hence you feel the startling emotions they undergo in the story. There is romance, betrayal, heartbreak, paranormal, reincarnation, afterlife, haunting, drama, and everything else that makes it a wholesome story, not just horror.
Overall, Karma is one of author’s finest works, and one of the best narrated stories in the horror genre in recent times. The editing is praiseworthy too making it a bingeworthy, fast-paced, and pulse-bounding read.
And yes, the cover is mind-blowing and gives a superb retro feel to the book.

Karma isn’t your typical horror novel. It doesn’t rely on extreme horror or cheap jump scares. Instead, it delivers a slow-burn, psychological, mind-bending experience, culminating in a surprising twist. The frequent shifts in timelines and alternating action add layers of mystery and intrigue, keeping the reader engaged and eager for more.

The allure of a haunting often lies in the spaces where the past whispers into the present, its echoes ricocheting through shadowy corridors and fractured sense of reality. In this meticulously crafted novella by Abhirup Dhar, these whispers are deafening, reverberating across decades to weave an unsettling tale. Set against the brooding, mist-draped mountains of Darjeeling, the narrative alternates between 1985 and 2016, inviting readers into a labyrinthine structure that is both mesmerizing and, at times, maddening.

The story begins in 1985, with Anuradha and Arnab relocating to an isolated, atmospheric house, a place intended to serve as a retreat from Kolkata’s frenetic pace. Their six-year-old son, Ricky, becomes the unwitting harbinger of the inexplicable as the family is drawn into an escalating vortex of paranormal occurrences. Fast-forward to 2016, where Karma, a professor of parapsychology, and Sakshi, take residence in the same house. As the timelines entwine and fragment, the house itself emerges as a malevolent character, its secrets spilling forth with each revelation.

The narrative excels in its use of non-linear storytelling, particularly in the 2016 segments, which oscillate between Karma and Sakshi’s harrowing present and the origins of their relationship. This disjointed approach amplifies the suspense, forcing the reader to piece together a puzzle whose final image is as haunting as it is tragic. The interplay between the two eras is skillfully orchestrated, with fleeting details—an eerie piano chord, a ghostly voice—creating moments of recognition that further excite you.

And yet, the novella is not without its shortcomings. The relationship between Karma and Sakshi strains credulity; their whirlwind romance, forged over a chance encounter and a few eerie jaunts in the mountains, lacks the depth necessary to make Sakshi’s decisions feel plausible.

Thematically, the book delves into profound questions about the fragility of modern relationships. Sakshi and Karma’s interactions expose the fault lines of distrust, impulsivity, and emotional withdrawal, contrasting sharply with the more grounded (if equally tragic) dynamic of Anuradha and Arnab. This subtle critique of human connections in an age of impermanence lends the book a layer of universality, even as its horrors are firmly rooted in the supernatural.

The horror elements themselves are impeccably rendered, eschewing cheap thrills for an atmosphere steeped in dread. The house becomes a tableau of spectral phenomena: a mirror that serves as a portal to another realm, the hollow resonance of a piano played by unseen hands, and the chilling lore of Darjeeling’s haunted past. The author’s restraint is commendable, unveiling just enough to keep the reader teetering on the edge of comprehension without ever slipping into exposition.

Despite the flaws, the book triumphs in its ability to meld two distinct timelines into a cohesive whole, its structural elegance matched only by the vividness of its fear factor. The climactic unravelling is both devastating and cathartic, offering readers a satisfying resolution to the intricate web of events. This is a book that demands patience, rewarding readers who can endure its slower moments with a payoff that lingers long after the final page.

The eye-catching, crimson cover immediately draws the reader in. Rich, glamorous, and creatively designed by The Book Bakers, it not only depicts elements of danger and suspense but also evokes a profound sense of empathy for the child seemingly trapped in the time warp.

This is Author Abhirup Dhar’s recent offering in Horror. When we use ‘horror’, we are typically reminded of ghostly apparitions, spooky elements and gore. We anticipate unravelling the mystery with bated breath, often finding it predictable. However, Mr. Dhar masterfully builds suspense, making the resolution anything but predictable.

Centred around three characters, Ricky, Karma and Sakshi, the plot keeps moving between them. The transition in time is captured effortlessly and helps the reader move between them with ease. The unexpected ending leaves the reader pondering its implications long after finishing the book.
An impactful, crisp read which leaves the reader ruminating.

Set in the hills, the vivid descriptions of Darjeeling and the iconic landmarks associated with it come as a delightful surprise to me. I have always loved the quaint town and could relate to the descriptions of the place. It's evident that the author has a deep connection with the city and deeply reveres it.

I was right! He has spent his childhood there. Knowing the author's background, I realized the story was a heartfelt tribute to his idyllic childhood in the hill station.

The characters are etched well and deeply resonate with the reader. Interwoven with fear and suspense, the author introduces a romantic element that keeps the story fresh and alluring.
Abhirup Dhar explores various dimensions in this story. From the struggles of a writer to the challenges faced by paranormal investigators, he creates a grounded and realistic narrative. Beyond the supernatural elements, it's a richly crafted narrative that explores various nuances of human relationships and builds upon them.

It is a story where every non-living entity has a character and a firm presence. The author masterfully weaves horror from both the living and the dead, demonstrating the chilling potential of both worlds.

Unputdownable. Gripping and fast. I highly recommend this book to everyone, even those who typically avoid horror. It's unlike any ghost story you've read before.

Horror novels are not what you might have ever thought they are.Assuming the role of a director and writer, Karma, by Abhirup Dhar, is as traversing the Darjeeling toy train track through the ethereal, timeliness veil of reality and afterlife. Well, stick with me, buddy, and you won’t recognize any fantasy you used to have about ghosts!

Dhar keeps the reader aghast providing them with a fresh and zesty brew of the sublime. So, the absolute hero of this cosmic horror movie?A Victorian mirror that looks like an early incarnation of Instagram and takes the viewer on a full tour of life, death, and everything in between. And it is just that —Black Mirror in terms of the overall ambiance and the kind of dystopia it depicts in its episodes.

But here's the real mind-bender: Cosmic justice applies to more than meets the eye and all ghostly occurrences.Sit back and let this show give you an interesting insight into the notion of cause and effect, and make you question every single thing that ever happened in your lifetime. Was this book just what you picked up to read or was it prescribed by fate right from the creation of the world?

...(Cue twilight zone music)

Dhar’s writing style is like nothing you might have encountered before: It is as if he blends the real world with the world of Alice in Wonderland – and you are as clueless when you wake up in the middle of this strange world as Alice is when waking up in the middle of the wonderland. It’s chilling and true, but ultimately it’s the inescapable loneliness that keeps you tossing and turning at night thinking, is that doll just a doll or is it great-grandfather’s spirit, that needs to look for closure?

Let's connect and discuss the whole book as this whole book as @misty_cosy_club gang are showing up some serious interest in this one.

What the representations of ‘Karma’ are telling me is that Karma is nothing but a one-way ticket to the weirdest, wildest, most spiritually terrifying ride of one’s lifetime. Just remember: Round and round in Dhar’s universe … and what goes around comes around…and around, and round and round…

Abhirup Dhar has made a name for himself in the world of horror writing, and I’ve been a huge fan of his work for quite some time. Dhar's unique style makes him one of the finest voices in horror fiction today. When I saw that he had released a new book after a long break, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Dhar's books have never let me down, and this one was no exception. From the very first line, where Ricky encounters a strange ghostly couple in the mirror of his house, I was hooked. The story kept me engaged right from the start!

His latest book 'Karma' is a true masterpiece of horror. The storytelling is gripping, with every page pulling you deeper into the eerie and unsettling atmosphere he creates. His ability to blend suspense with chilling, vivid descriptions makes it hard to put the book down. The characters are well-crafted, and the plot twists keep you on the edge of your seat. From the first page, the tension builds perfectly, leading to an unforgettable climax, along with the author's signature style of incorporating a love story, reminiscent of his earlier works. The story beautifully captures author's deep love for Darjeeling, seamlessly weaving it into the narrative and adding an authentic layer to the character's emotions and experiences.

To connect you with the book 'Karma' I have given you a brief idea about the story.Penned by Abhirup Dhar, tempted to take you on a ride through the blurred lines of reality and illusion, Karma grips you till it achieves the end.

The story will feel like your brain's playing tricks on you, but in the best way possible! The book throws you into a psychological horror rollercoaster that you can't shake off.
So, what's this all about? Picture an old mirror, right? It's not just there to show you your reflection—it's like the universe's way of saying, "Hey, what you see might not be what you get." The story's got Karma, Sakshi, and Ricky, and their lives are like, super connected by this mirror. Stuff that happens in one time gets echoed in another—like déjà vu, but way more creepier.
But wait, there's more! It's not only about scaring the pants off you. This book dives into some deep stuff, like karma—you know, the idea that what you do now might smack you in the face later. It's a mind-bender, making you think about how your choices can be like dropping a pebble in a pond—tiny at first but causing ripples that can turn into big waves that never asked to fade away into oblivion rather redirected back to you in any mean time.

And get this—it's not just your regular horror story. Author Abhirup 's playing with the Indian horror scene, making it fresh and twisted. His writing style is like a ninja—sharp and sneaky, cutting right through the usual horror stuff and making you feel all kinds of weird about what's real and what's just in your head.

So, if you're down to get a little lost in the mirror maze of reality, give "Karma" a shot. It'll have you questioning everything, like whether your reflection is actually your friend or if it's plotting something shady behind your back. And remember, not everything is what it seems in this book—or maybe in life either? Just sayin'.

Karma is a gripping tale of supernatural terror and emotional depth, set against the backdrop of Darjeeling's misty hills. Abhirup Dhar takes readers on a thrilling journey through two intertwined timelines that explore the dark secrets of a house steeped in mystery and fear.

The story begins with young Ricky, who senses a sinister presence in his new home. As his family grapples with unexplainable and eerie events, they turn to a psychic, uncovering truths that challenge their understanding of reality. Decades later, the same house becomes the stage for a chilling ordeal as Karma and Sakshi face the horrors that dwell within. With a relentless storm isolating them, they are forced to unravel the house's history and confront their own hidden fears.

Abhirup skillfully weaves suspense and intrigue, creating a haunting atmosphere that keeps readers on edge. The connections between past and present are explored with a delicate balance of mystery and revelation, making the story both unsettling and compelling. The antique mirror, a central symbol in the narrative, adds an eerie layer, reflecting not just images but the characters’ deepest fears and secrets.

The book delves into themes of fear, loss, and the unknown, pushing the boundaries of how we perceive life and death. Abhirup’s vivid descriptions bring the haunted house and its surroundings to life, making the reader feel as if they’re part of the unfolding horror.

There is a moral at the end which Karma and Sakshi realizes that they could have dealt better with things, be more understanding, and less insecure. They wish they had tried a little harder to make it work. As Karma says, “We can only accept what is our truth now. We will be at peace if we try not to latch on to the physical world.”

📚 BOOK REVIEW
Karma by Abhirup Dhar

Horror is the term used to evoke fear, terror and shock in one self. In the era where horror is loosing its charm, Author Abhirup Dhar has come up with a set of new titles instantly catching our attention while his writing style keeps us hooked on to them.

Karma is the newest addition to his collection. The setup of the story is in the queen of hills, Darjeeling which offers picturesque views to the readers. A short yet very powerful novella.

Arnab along with his family has recently shifted to Darjeeling. He has setup his new business there with the prospect of a brighter future for his young son Ricky. After some days both the parents had to leave Ricky alone in the house in the care of his nurse. Thus began the occurrence of unnatural events in his new house.

The story will churn your mind while giving you goosebumps. I was reading it during the night and had to switch on the lights still felt someone peeping around the corner. Such is the effect of the author's words. The switching of past and present was remarkable.

The story will trick your mind and make you lost within it. The fear and horror will haunt you long after you have completed reading it. Mirrors and Surfaces of water are said to be gateways to the other world. I am still terrified while mentioning this here. The climax pulls up a realisation for us.

The writing style of the author simple yet subtle. The author has precisely constructed the story within different time frames.

Mystery unfolds in the end making you reflect upon it. A story engulfed with time loop. A must read for horror fans.

Karma is a wonderfully written story of how our sense of reality can sometimes be an illusion. Based in the hills of Darjeeling, Abhirup explores a story of how the idea of time and reality can be warped and what we are experiencing, might just be a false sense of comfort. The book is a short read, however within 118 pages, Abhirup manages to weave a story that keeps you turning the pages. The highlight of the book is the way the book is written. The core idea of the book is hidden in plain sight, however the journey to the reveal is quite interesting and as a reader, it is almost as if you are reading those 2-in-1 books which flipped in the middle (no spoilers here!!!). The spook factor is still there, however the fear in this book is not the one that makes you jump but something that sends chills throughout your body. The idea of death is something tha he explores quite nicely. My favourite part of the book is the basement scene, specially the second time over, when the realization hits you as to what really happened and then you have that moment of awareness of the story that the author wanted to tell.

If I talk about characters, Karma was my favourite. The way his story has been structured is an excellent piece of storytelling in itself. The way his life unfolds, and he gets what he wants, only to lose it all in that one moment of weakness was a wonderful way of crafting this character. Kirtiman as a Paranormal Investigator has been nicely crafted as well, and there is a certain respect and dignity that he brings to the character.

Karma by Abhirup Dhar is a brilliant critique of a reality that is so close that it blurs the line between past and future, truth and illusion and reason and insanity. It just occurs to me that the old mirror, the primary focus of the story, cannot be fit into the category of a mere storytelling tool; it embodies reflection, which means that there can be no real reflection without distortion.

Dhar is indeed, as sharp as broken glass and his prose penetrates directly through the heart of the norms and boundaries of traditional prose. While Ricky beating-up the little boy is certainly within the same universe as Karma and Sakshi’s ordeal, there are connections between the two timelines that go beyond a simple dual-narrative structure: sometimes events from one timeline occur concurrently with those in the other, and spotting them is one of the best parts. This is psychological horror in its highest form and the sort of book that will leave you wondering who’s real and who isn’t.

It is, in fact, about something more profound than Halloween horrors: karma, the circle of life, the burden of decisions, and the differences between the world as it is and the world as it seems. Through reading the essays in this volume, the readers will learn about the existent Indian horror genre and develop understanding of how historical narratives influence the present.

Abhirup Dhar's artsy, multi-layered horror novel plays with time, memory and fate in diverse ways. The two timelines: Ricky's life in the 1980s and Karma and Sakshi's struggles in the present are woven in differentiating moves to provide, little by little, a puzzle that unfolds its fabric as the novel advances. A vintage mirror at the heart of the story represents both literal and metaphorical links between the past and the present.
The theme of the book is prominently reflected through a classic mirror, both an actual object in the story and a reflective symbolism on this very theme of karma.
The book is structured as a double-narrative sojourn, for it moves literally from the 1980s to present-day while bringing in a haunting sense of inevitability, bearing witness to the past catching up with its present day in terrifying ways.
What makes Karma special is the ability of Dhar actually to build up tension and suspense through the richly detailed descriptions of Darjeeling's foggy landscapes and colonial history. Where the novel really goes, though, is to explore the concept of karma as a ripple effect-how every action spans the dimensions of time, giving it a depth beyond what the ordinary horror genre has. It will definitely appeal to people who love stories that challenge the reader's reality and time perceptions. Karma is an exciting and worthwhile journey.

Excitement is right, just get ready, all you adrenaline junkies! If ‘Karma’ is the Abhirup’s house of Karma then it is the literary equivalent of a Fun Chamber haunted house ride complete with wallops, ghosts and horrors lurking at every corner. This is not a story because the novel does not just tell it, a story helps you live the moments of Ricky and even childhood, yet it takes you to the horror of Karma and Sakshi at the nights.

Dhar’s prose is beautiful in its beauty and terrible in its terror; they are not dirty words, but they create a picture pure and grim. The rhythm of the book is also quite smooth: long descriptive parts describing the atmosphere of Darjeeling assails by mists as frequently intercalated by truly thrilling episodes of supernatural horror.

The tenacity of imaginative language in Dhar’s prose as the guide who takes you through the cobwebbed alleys of the mind and then snaps his fingers to unveil the unpleasant naked truths. The book does not rush things, maintaining constant tension and invoking fear with great expressions throughout the book. the ending, however? It is without the doubt that ‘’break, heart racing, adrenalin pumping’’ trip that ends up making you gasp for the next episode. Hold on tight, dear reader, for a roller-coaster that you will not want to get off.

A haunted house. An antique mirror. Footsteps in the empty living room. Laughter of a little boy. Brief piano notes playing on their own. A man and woman arguing loudly. And the message given by the man : DEATH.

When Ricky’s parents had to leave their 6 year old son under the care of their nurse in their Darjeeling home, they did not expect to see what happened to their son. He was attacked by some supernatural elements and it went downhill from there. The house was built in the lap of nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Years later, another couple Karma and Sakshi are stuck in the same house. And they are faced with the same supernatural events as the little boy earlier. What does the spirits want? What happened to the little boy? What is the mystery behind the haunted house and the antique mirror? (Read the book to find out…)

This is my first book by the author. I did not expect it to be a spooky horror book from the title. However the cover definitely has a spooky vibe.

However, I love to watch spooky movies and somewhere I feel it is very difficult to put pen to paper with respect to spooky books. So I felt that the author did a good job with respect to putting all the elements and trying to keep them unpredictable. I loved the twists and turns.

'Karma' by Abhirup Dhar is one of the most anticipated horror fictions revolving around the themes of dark secrets and mysteries. As the story unfolds, Ricky's nightmares turn out to be both thrilling and nail-biting.6-years-old Ricky discovers a man speaking from a mirror, a night of being isolated at the home evidently changes Ricky's life. He couldn't help, but delve deeper into the mysteries of the house. Likewise, a decade later, Sakshi and Karma encounter similar acquaintances in the house, to unravel the mysteries - they gradually unfold such secrets that combine supernaturals with a dark history to thrill and fascinate the readers.

Abhirup Dhar's writing style combines elements that resonate with the readers for long. He masterfully weaves a story that captivates as well as impacts people with depth of secrets and mysteries. This horror fiction is though complicated, but compelling and uplifting. Author's narration and writing widens the storyline and it's effect, encouraging readers to get stimulated and rejuvenated with 'Karma'.

Karma, authored by Abhirup Dhar, is another horror story with strong local flavor-you will not be able to sleep after reading this one. This novel is as fulfilling as that perfect cup of tea, which satisfies the body and soul or as the ‘Darjeeling’s refreshing and astringent best tea in the world.

A world of time and horror surrounded by the mixture of ancient times and modernity in the hills of Darjeeling. Dhar gets to tell a story that gyrates between decades inducing supernatural terror and human conflict. Obviously, he knows that information, keeps readers intrigued and mesmerized till the unexpected last moment.

Dhar’s narrative is as shimmery and playful as the hills are and the terror is tellingly interwoven between the past and the present. And the antique mirror – the greatest scoops and twists, which act as a mirror of karmic revenge. Despite all the paranormal associations, it is the tragic conflicts which might stir the viewer’s most. Dhar’s characters are as difficult to read as the territory and their motivations and wants and need shape the plot. It’s a ghost story folks, but also a reflection narrative of interconnectedness, all tucked snugly into a haunting premise.

Cursed to the darkest corners of the sea
"Karma" by Abhirup Dhar is a story outside the underworld - a hard look at conscience, forgiveness and the demons that reside in everyone's soul. The plot is built around the desire to reveal hidden truths. This changes the way readers interpret the shadow from beginning to end.

First of all, it is very important to note that Dhar gives us quite complex and realistic characters. All of which appear to contain human imperfections of one kind or another. Both the collective and the individual are presented with their own personal, gargantuan realities. Which is open to some great psychological tricks. Apart from supernatural things

Dhar handles the prose quite well. Both clean and powerful The most striking difference is probably the ancient conjuring up of symbols and plot drivers at the same time.

There's no doubt that many readers will be affected by "Karma," and many of us will sense our own fear or anger from the characters' actions. or something similar The book also classifies marked questions which indicate the actual results of perception and the consequences of past actions.

Ignore anything you believe you know and remember from horror novels. In ‘Karma’ Abhirup Dhar has turned a fear into a rather colorful, multifaceted precious stone that illuminates India’s rainbow like immigration. Dhar does a good job of integrating mysticism from Indian culture along with Western rationality and the fundamental aspects of human experience to present one of a kind horror stories.

The house represents India and its history from different points of view which are filled with mystery and horror. Although the scenes of horror are numerous, it’s the philosophy of karma, reincarnation, and eternal recurrence that gets the most attention in the novel. Karma is a book that has elements of a ghost story but as you read this, be prepared for a ride through cultures of different Asian countries.

A rollercoaster of emotions awaits: cold sweats, open heart sympathy, and head explodes amazement. Readers might experience the feeling of the mist on their skin, they can hear their pulse that increases with each new revelation and feel philosophical disgust at the concept of karma.

It’s by good 'Karma' that one stumbles upon works like these. Abhirup Dhar’s Karma is much more than a horror novel. Crisp narration, elegant storytelling, mind boggling twists and turns, vivid descriptions, you name it, the novel has it. And funnily, the reader undergoes the entire experience of fear, which is the purpose of a horror novel, infused with fervour and electric excitement.

Unlike most other horror books, Karma also encompasses within itself love and romance. And like a whodunnit novel, also presents you with the thrill of ‘what’s next’. With every chapter unfolds a layer of a multi-layered well-crafted story, and takes the reader through a horror rollercoaster. The intertwined timelines, the haunting backdrop, the spooky atmosphere make sure that the reader is on the edge of the seat the whole time. And what it results in, is one unstoppable session of devouring the book, like a binge-watched OTT show!

A treat for a horror genre aficionado, an eye-opener for someone wary of horror, this book is a must-read for every pleasure-seeking mind. Go grab your copy now!

"A Puzzle Box of Nightmares"
I call Karma, a novel by Abhirup Dhar, a puzzle box book as all the chapters open up new diabolical chambers in the protagonist’s hellish life full of unexpected contortions. Nothing seems to fit in easily without being turned on its head – just when you think you’ve understood Dhar, he brings a new twist into the equation. While Ricky’s child and adolescent years were a distant joke, Karma and Sakshi’s present life is a living nightmare and both these narratives are bound together with bolts and screws more than just parallel tracks forming the railway of the film. Completing this puzzle is a fun, sometimes infuriating, but always satisfying process which will hold your attention until you finish it. These beacons of hope are few and, when it shines, the complete picture is much worse than the mind can perceive. This is a good idea one can say about ‘Karma’, because it shows that Dhar is a master of both storytelling and teasing, as well as being an excellent creator of horror, whose mind is as sharp as a razor.

Karma by Abhirup Dhar is not just a horror novel—it’s an authentic representation and potentially dark expression of the human soul. What makes it unique is how Dhar skillfully combines supernatural fear with psychological horror, delving into themes of guilt, redemption, and karmic justice. The story moves through different time periods, connecting the 80s and 90s to the present in a smooth and eerie manner.Ricky’s experiences as a boy caught in events beyond his control resonate with Karma and Sakshi’s challenges in the present, where love, trust, and betrayal play key roles. Abhirup Dhar’s writing is clear and vivid, creating a spooky atmosphere that draws you in from the start. The use of Indian folklore adds a cultural touch that makes the supernatural aspects feel real and deeply disturbing. I felt that what truly stands out in Karma is its philosophical depth—this is horror that makes you think, prompting readers to consider their own fears, regrets, and the outcomes of past actions.

A Psychological Thriller That Defies Expectations
“Karma” by Abhirup Dhar is far from typical showcasing horror genre but it seems to be more consistent with psychological kind and does not make the viewer’s conventional expectations of horror come true. The story is laid out in a complex manner to the point that several stories take place at different points in time, albeit all connected to a single Central Hub, with the suitable twist of events at the end. While narrating, Dhar employs the imaginative strength of making suspense out of suggestion which must be far more challenging to the readers than relying on crude scares.

More than anything, perhaps, it is the ability of Dhar to consistently superimpose various aspects of conventional haunted narratives alongside neurotic/possession sorts of horror. This is what then makes the narrative both familiar and yet new at the same time, to borrow a Kenyan expression: familiar and yet very new. Because the readers asking questions to the characters, it offers the feelings of really living with the story, very creepy.

If you crave for a scary novel that goes deeper than just the elements of traditional horror, might as well shred Karma. I can’t remember when was the last time the book made me such query the existence of time and reality, just like this one. It’s almost as if Dhar constructed this whole world in which the lines separating the past and the future, the truth and the so-called truth, as well as the sane and the insane were so awfully thin that I was restlessly on the edge. The magical mirror that plays a central role in the narrative isn’t only a reflective surface – it is almost a separate entity which astounds you by reflecting much more than you have simply viewed. Moreover, how is it possible to unite the two timelines? It is like piecing together a large jigsaw in which there is a race against time and any of the pieces can end up anywhere. You bet on this: this is psychological horror at its peak, and I’m sure you will be wondering by the end of it, which part of the story actually happened and which one was created by your brain.

I've read enough horror literature but Karma raises the bar even higher. For example, instead of using great jump scares or achieving a creepy soothing atmosphere as most horror films do, Dhar delves into something much worse: the law of cause and effect. There are repercussions for everything, and this book makes you aware of it in the deepest way possible. What shocked me most was how the characters were not only confined by their environment, but by the consequences of choices made before they were even born. A certain powerful sense of belonging to the universe and at an uncanny level, resentment for the existence of karmic retribution is evident in the manner in which Karma is articulated in the film – all binding people down through time and space.

This story is not only ridden by ghosts but the realization of our connectivity to unexpected things it’s as though all the possibilities are already stretched outside of our control. And that to me, is what makes Karma terrifying in a good way.

What powers move in the house? What is its history? Are Ricky and Karma connected? They all must confront their own deep fears before it's too late!

MY THOUGHTS -
I dnt really read horror or paranormal stuff but post Halloween seeing all sug books and more so this book being 130 odd pages only and set in my home country I decided to be brave and give this one a try and it didn't disappoint me.
Written in an alternating timeline with a crisp and fast paced narration I was pulled in the story and finished in a day's time .
Thank God I read during the day as some scenes were quite eerie and haunting. I appreciated how the author incorporated the human and emotional angle in the storyline with a hint of romance and drama making it a wholesome reading.
Also coming to the epilogue it left me in splits!
Fans of horror / paranormal stuff do check this one out!

Can haunted houses, and vengeful ghosts really be possible? In "Karma," Abhirup Dhar taps into a far more terrifying concept: the inevitability of cause and effect. To an excellent degree, this novel outcasts the fence of the horror genere and switch from the horror of personal and private life to the horror that is personal and cosmological and sententiously uncanny inference the permanence of sin where each act has debatable repercussions, often more qualitative than quantitative. Thus, the novel becomes an embodiment of this webbed reality – the consequences of which follow generations. A far greater horror can be found not in the ghost’s presence but in the understanding that human beings are confined and cannot begin and cannot end – they are connected with the past and future. The entire story is brutally claustrophobic, and Dhar uses it to make the reader think about their own position in the universe.

What “Karma” leaves you with goes deeper than merely a rush – this is commentary on destiny, on the past and on the distinction between the other and the self. If you consider yourself a fan of think-y horror or cinematic-style horror, then this one is a definite read.

The main characters, Ricky, Karma and Sakshi are mastered and each of them has a hidden life that is informed in the overall mystery. By the end that had left me feeling the confusion, fear, and determination of the characters as they set about doing what needs to be done when the house starts revealing its less than happy secrets.

The readers will find themselves ‘feeling along with’ the struggles, pains, and apprehensions that come with the face of these two ladies. I would say that the message of “Karma” is not only horror, but also shocking and scary and scary on a philosophical level – it is the shocking and undeniable reality.

I started with trepidation as it's rare for me to be spooked by anything much. This book though was gripping and exciting enough to catch my fancy and keep me flipping pages until i was done with it completely.
Centered around three primary characters this is a book that skips into different timelines with ease. The reader is captivated by the simple yet interesting narrative style of Author Abhirup.
Who doesn't like stories that involve portals and ghosts i ask...
One is truly entangled in the webs woven by Mr. Abhirup masterful storytelling.
An added plus is the beautiful way in which he has described Darjeeling.
The emotional ups and downs between characters show his deep understanding of human emotions and ensuing complications.
Small things like mentions of day to day activities makes it feel like one is reading about a close friend.
It is an interesting read....oh and spooky enough to keep one awake at night.

Karma by Abhirup Dhar wasn't your traditional ghost-haunting thriller. It was something substantial, something significant. As I delved deeper into the novel, I discovered that the real fear was not about the ghosts or the supernatural but about the philosophical weight of karma, the implications of cause and effect and choices. Dhar's work [was sanguine], which combined Indian mysticism and Western rationalism, gave a 3D effect where you were forced to ask some hard-hitting questions. The house in the tale was not only haunted by ghosts but also by history and the burdens on their hearts. As the tale evolved, and I looked into it from different angles, I realized this wasn’t a supernatural story but rather a humane examination of our current system, our behavioral preferences, and the prices associated with this.

Being a Psychic and a Staunch believe of Karma....I generally get energetically drained when I think of Spirits and Souls... .

But the Book "Karma" by Abhirup Dhar has left me with mixed emotions...Great amalgamation of Love and Fear both... I got goosebumps when I reached climax...

Karma's life engulfed with insecurities and fear since childhood ... he has understandably made the choices, he made ...

Know that, with Love comes Insecurities at times and that's where downfall starts. And with Insecurities comes Fear .that can compel you to break the Laws of Spirit world...
