Juliana (35) & Ben (37) don’t get off on the right foot her first day on the job. She is back in the workforce due to her husband, Jason’s, untimely death. But as a single parent now her top priority are her two girls, so when the school calls she has no choice but to leave early and miss an important meeting with Ben. The next day she overhears him complaining about her and flash forward 2 years and she’s still mad.
Oh boy, the sexual tension was on point, which is to be expected with enemies to lovers. I liked that it was just a workplace romance and not a boss/employee type of situation. Juliana was a rock star of an employee. They share a bff, Asia, who also works with them. She's put in the middle sometimes, but she handles it well.
Regarding the dead hub ~ I do feel like the grief was handled well and I felt bad for her and the kids, obviously, but I was tired of hearing about him over and over and over again after a while. Ben was pretty great in that aspect and didn't mind her talking about him, so I liked that. He was pretty great all around and I do wish we had a few chapters with his POV.
Overall, this was mostly great for a debut, except for the 3rd act that I absolutely hated, but could also maybe see a teeny tiny bit, like pin prick size, of why it was done. Still could have gone without it, though. I probably could have rated this higher had it not been for it.
Narration notes:
She did great. She deepened her tone for the men almost convincingly.

Who can resist the charm of a steamy workplace romance, especially one packed with enemies-to-lovers, second chances, and forced proximity tropes, spiced up with witty, entertaining banter? Juliana and Ben first meet in a classic "meet cute" at work, but their budding connection quickly turns sour after Juliana overhears Ben making a hurtful comment, doubting her ability to return to work after taking a long break for motherhood. Unable to forgive his unfair words—particularly after losing her daughters' father in a tragic accident—Juliana sharpens her resolve to make his work life difficult.
Two years pass, and Juliana's frustration only grows as Ben repeatedly shows up at her door requesting help finding candidates for his department. As if things couldn’t get worse, Juliana learns she’s up for a promotion—but the only way to prove herself is by working closely with Ben on a special project for their company’s Boston-based architecture department. I have to say, the enemies-to-lovers dynamic and the steamy office romance definitely drew me in, making Juliana and Ben’s second-chance story captivating. However, the last third of the book veered into unnecessary melodrama. Ben, who initially came across as patient, honest, and determined—despite his initial hurtful comment—left me disappointed by the end. The story introduced a not-quite-love-triangle situation that felt excessive, and Juliana’s stubbornness and impulsive reactions added to the drama in a way that felt forced.
Ultimately, I dropped my rating to 3.5 stars due to the overly dramatic conclusion, though I’m rounding it up to 4 stars for my love of the tropes, the romance, and the portrayal of Juliana’s adorable daughters. The beginning was so strong, and I was rooting for Juliana and Ben, but the overly dramatic ending just didn’t live up to my hopes. Nevertheless, it’s an enjoyable read for fans of the genre.

I’m so happy I got an ARC from a giveaway for this book! I genuinely enjoyed the majority of it. The book comes out in February 2025 and I highly recommend it!
Juliana is a single mom and widow to two girls, Clara and Sophie, entering back into work as a job recruiter, when she runs into (literally) Ben, who works in the architecture department. She had been a SAHM before her husband passed away and is forced to get a new job 9 months after his death.
There’s immediate sparks between them, but she ends up having to cut her day of meetings short with the leaders of the departments because of one of her daughters having an issue at school, and overhears Ben sort of roasting her for being late and then cancelling. Which makes them enemies.. to Juliana. Which starts a two year battle between them getting on each others nerves for fun (mostly).
I loved the nuances of the attraction between Juliana and Ben. Juliana struggles with the trauma and pain of losing the first love of her life, and having to pick up the pieces for her girls. She is an incredible single mom and it made me so much more appreciative for my own single mom and what she inevitably had to go through while raising three kids.
Juliana is also in a war with herself, full of guilt for being attracted to someone new after losing her husband in a car accident, and her raw emotions are so real on the pages. Her silent strength around her kids is incredibly moving. Her kids have an active role in the story because they bring Ben and Juliana together when their daughters become best friends.
While Ben obviously starts off as a bad guy, the reasons behind his initial reaction come to light and I honestly really enjoyed how everything played out. They share a bestfriend, Asia who has known Ben for many years before Juliana.
I had some issues with the way issues were handled between the adults, things that could’ve just been said immediately to explain certain reactions. But even though things get very messy, it’s so REAL that I really couldn’t be mad about it.
As Ben and Juliana get closer, the stakes get higher and they decide to keep their relationship a secret while Juliana waits for a promotion to go through. They both go on a work trip where things really heat up between them (the spice was pretty good, too). There are some funny bits with them having to hide their relationship from their kids and almost getting caught in the process.
I loved Ben’s understanding of Juliana’s love for her husband (also his name is Jason which is the name of my own father and I cringed so hard everytime I had to read that name, BLEHG). He asks her about him and is patient with her throughout her feelings of guilt. Her support system with her parents and friends is so heartwarming and precious it brought tears to my eyes a few times.
Things get messy near the ending, ugh, another third act breakup trope that kind of pissed me off a little. But like, I get it. Ben’s ex-wife comes back into play after giving her daughter the beautiful gift of anxiety and abandonment issues. She tries to get Ben back, which spoiler alert, will never work. Honestly the way things got handled by Ben was really disappointing and made my jaw ache from clenching. Like I wanted to yell at him! It almost soured the book for me, but alas, he did do a very good job on his grand gesture so I quickly forgave him.

Overall, this was super enjoyable and I can’t believe it’s Amy’s debut novel! The intricacies of grief, healing and love were so realistic and powerful. It made me appreciate the hell out of my own mom. I’m very happy to have won a giveaway to recieve this book!

Ben Thomas gets off on the wrong foot with Juliana when she hears him complaining about her lack of recent experience and her children’s needs. Their feud rages on still two years later when they are put together on a project. Their bickering has changed over the years to include a little flirting. As they work on the project they find their home lives also mixing. Turns out their children are similar in ages and they go to the same school. They declare a truce which turns into more. Juliana is ready to love again. Is Ben?
🎧 I alternated between an ebook and audiobook. The narration is performed by Charlotte North who does an excellent job between the two main characters. The emotions including anger, remorse, angst, and lust come through clearly. I did speed up the playback to 1.5 which more closely matches a standard Midwest conversation.
I liked the audiobook more than the ebook in this case because it kept me listening. If I only had the ebook, after the second breakup, I probably would have either skipped ahead to the end of the book, or simply stopped reading at that point.
I liked Ben for his priorities and his not willing to give up.
Too much angst via arguments, banter a touch too mean for me and a second repeat of on again, off again.

I have to say I have some mixed feelings about this book. I love so many things about the MMC, Ben. For me, he leads with his smirks, soft side, and all-in attitude.
Juliana, the FMC, is quite the opposite and has held grudges for a long time. Her snarky attitude in many places in this story really bugs me.
An office-based romance, I love the way the author starts to blend the two main characters together off of work. The additional characters really make the story come together and the BFF’s are great. Honorable, true, and supportive. The author gives us humor and fun to offset the feud and the slowww (much too slow) burn to the realization that there might be something there.
Overall, Let’s Call a Truce is an enjoyable read but I really would have loved it if the FMC had treated him better. A two-year feud is a bit much at some points in the story. I really wanted more of them together instead of all the infighting.
With that being said, I would not hesitate to read Buchanan again as she delivers the spicy romance and the HEA with a side of snark and delight.

I’m honestly so torn on this book! It started off SO GOOD. The banter and tension between Juliana and Ben was absolute fire. I loved that Juliana was a boss mom who put her kids first and kept pushing forward after everything she’d been through. And Ben was sweet, flirty, charming, and such a good dad. I was rooting for them hard.
But somewhere along the way, things got a little messy for me. The miscommunication and feelings going back and forth? Whew, it wore me out. That big breakup near the end almost made me toss my kindle across the room. Like, seriously, why??
And don’t even get me started on the last 20%. Ben made some choices that made zero sense and had me side-eyeing my Kindle. I felt a little gaslit, not gonna lie. It knocked my rating down from a solid 4 stars to 3. Still, I can’t lie.. their growth was sweet, and the ending left me smiling. Juliana had her moments, but girl was trying, and Ben (for the most part) was patient and kind to Juliana and her girls.

Would I read another Amy Buchanan book? Absolutely.

An absolute gem! I’m in love.
Juliana stole my heart—she’s a powerhouse of a mom just trying to make it through, and my sympathy for her is through the roof. Aside from being a brilliant single mother, she’s also incredibly funny! And Ben? WOW. Swoonworthy doesn’t even begin to cover it. This man is pure, unapologetic manliness. Mix these two together, and BOY are they a sight to behold. The chemistry had me squealing.
The dynamic of found family is everything—plus, the banter between Juliana and Ben? I was cackling out loud at their witty comebacks! It’s the best part of the book, hands down, and I’m not complaining! Sure, at times the romance leaned more towards lust than love, but I got past that because the story’s charm more than made up for it. It’s funny, heartfelt, and has just the right amount of spice. I adore this read!

Mix these two together, and BOY are they a sight to behold. The chemistry had me squealing.
The dynamic of found family is everything—plus, the banter between Juliana and Ben? I was cackling out loud at their witty comebacks! It’s the best part of the book, hands down, and I’m not complaining! Sure, at times the romance leaned more towards lust than love, but I got past that because the story’s charm more than made up for it. It’s funny, heartfelt, and has just the right amount of spice. I adore this read!

Bring on a drama filled enemies/rivals to lovers workplace romance with some single parent sweetness and you know I’m picking this book up!
The part that pulled at my heartstrings the most were those sweet moments that showed how both parents had wonderful relationships with their children. I also really found myself drawn into the parts where Julia works through the grief surrounding the loss of her husband as she found her way as a single mom in the working world.

We get a SUPER steamy office desk scene that I do not think I’ll ever recover from, banter that never quits, and FOREARMS FOR DAYYYS on a man you cannot convince me is not a Henry Cavill doppelganger! This book also had a heartwarming cast of characters and adorably clever kids. I can’t say enough good things about this debut! Let's Call a Truce is not a good match for my taste. I feel the story is dragging. The chemistry between the main characters is sometimes not the spotlight of the story.

Is Ben secretly loaded or are we just supposed to pretend trips across the globe for 5 people don’t cost a lot of money?
The DEI program storyline had no purpose; it resorted to stereotypes to try to prove its value, but all it was was the author preaching to the reader.

I’m sorry to say that this book didn’t really work for me. I felt that it was too long for the relatively simple plot, and it all felt like word padding. I think fans of Elena Armas will enjoy this.

Amy Buchanan’s Let’s Make a Truce is a workplace romance based in central Florida. Juliana is a single mom and widow who is returning to work and finds herself at odds with one of the managers she works with, Ben. For seemingly no reason, she is really mean to him, hanging up on him, condescending to him. In turn, he is also critical of her and the advantages she gets at work for being a single mom.
I am rating this a 3.5 /5 - I like the banter and the chemistry, Ben was a great boyfriend after they finally connected. The beginning where it was the “enemies” part seemed over the top. Once their daughters become friends, they have even more forced proximity.
I love a workplace romance! It’s fun to see characters as parents, as lovers, and as workers. We are different people T home than we are at work, and it’s a great character study to see them in different variations. Overall this was a cute story with some spicy scenes. I was lucky to get an autographed copy.

My babe @booked.with.allie said this was her favorite book of 2024 so I immediately needed to read it! You guys, this book had me crying by page 14! Maybe I’m just an emotional baby but I can’t even imagine ever losing my husband the way our girl Juliana does. *Cue the waterworks*
Juliana lost her husband and is reentering the workforce after several years as a stay-at-home mom to her two little girls. When I tell you that this hit me so hard in my chest! So many moments where little lines here and there felt like they came from my own head. Ugh! Between her friend and boss Christina giving her the chance to work with little experience to her mom telling her she is doing the best job she can, the supporting women in this one had me choked up.
At her job she literally runs into Ben on her first day and while she thought they had potential to be friends, she overhears him complaining about her. Here sparks a 2 year feud between them that they have to call a truce for as they are forced to work together on a huge project that will offer both of them a promotion. It turns out feuding is actually just foreplay for Ben and Juliana because despite ‘hating’ each other, they’re both so attracted to one another that it’s hard to be in the same room. Between being forced to work on the project together, attend a business trip with each other, and Ben’s daughter becoming best friends with one of Juliana’s daughters- these two get very acquainted. Ben makes it known that he’s interested in Juliana but is willing to take baby steps for her to be comfortable, which I loved!
I will say that while I loved their budding romance, I felt that our third act breakup was a bit of a disservice to Ben. The entire book he was patient, understanding, and sympathetic only to undermine all that we knew about him for a story plot that made no sense. It felt a bit too excessive and drove this huge wedge between Ben and Juliana without any real cause for me. Despite that, I still had a fun time with this one!

This was a cute and timely read though not strong enough that it will stick with me.
Juliana's husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her to raise their two daughters; she returns to work in a Human Resources role and meets Ben, who crushes her dreams on the first day by insulting the fact that she's a working mom and implying that she's an inexperienced liability. The two never hash it out, but instead hate each other for a solid two years, sparring in the office. This despite the fact that they weirdly share a best friend, Asia, who is another colleague at their firm.
Eventually Ben and Juliana, of course, must work together on an inclusion initiative at their firm (hence the timely part - DEI haters, go away). If they want to succeed in their careers, they are going to have to suck it up and get along. Juliana has always found Ben attractive (what's more sexy than a man who insults you?), so she suddenly can't focus on her work.
What I liked: I always enjoy books set in a corporate setting; I work in one, so it's nice to see my own life in a book sometimes. Juliana has a wonderful support system in her boss, which is lovely to see. The parts about inclusion were great too. The story did a good job of exploring Juliana's grief, her struggles with single motherhood and trying to support her family after her husband's death, and her attempts to move on, both as a parent and romantically. And, the kids! I am a sucker for books with cute kids.
What I didn't like: Not much happens? The book focuses so much on Ben and Juliana hating each other to the detriment of forward progress in other areas. We get it. They both despised one another while secret sparks existed. Please move forward. And while this anger fermented, instead of driving up the chemistry, it didn't draw me to them as a couple. Their reasons to stay apart felt forced; she avoided him for TWO years due to one outburst, and Ben, oh Ben, he needed to toughen up in his own life and make some freaking decisions.
The second half of this book was definitely better than the first, so it ends on a high note. It's a cute and fun read albeit frustrating at times. 3.25 stars.

A tried and true trope with a less than exciting MMC.
Office romances are always enjoyable for me, especially when you throw in some animosity, but I was never really able to get behind the MMC, Ben. Their relationship starts off on the wrong foot because of something that Ben says that Juliana, the FMC, overhears. Imo, it was a pretty horrible thing to say, and we don't really get any explanation or closure on that until way later in the book, so I was already luke warm on him. Unlike a lot of FMC's lately, I don't have the ability to see past a potentially really negative quality in a guy just because he's attractive.
There are some great scenes with them and Ben does have some positive qualities. But then comes the third act break up and I DID NOT ENJOY IT. I get that the situation was complicated, but I don't think Ben handled it appropriately AT ALL. And subsequently, there was not enough groveling.
I liked Juliana's character. She was going through a hard time after her husband's death but she is still doing a great job with her daughters and also works hard at her job. I just think she deserved way more from Ben. He knew what her situation was and kept telling her he would be patient, but then he would get pissed at her for being scared.
So yeah, I wasn't super excited with this one 😣

I literally stayed up until 4 am devouring this ARC, I really have no words for how much I loved it. It's an angsty, funny, relatable and sexy ride of a book. I thought it would be a simple enemies to lovers book but it came with an unexpected twist and so much depth. Juliana's struggle with grief struck a cord within me and I appreciate an author who can write grief well. Ben is such a top tier mmc, always challenging Juliana and lifting her up and supporting her. They both had their flaws but in the end they're perfect for each other. I am so looking forward to whatever Amy Buchanan does next! Thank you NetGalley, Amy Buchanan and St. Martins Press for this ARC!

Wow! This was a heartfelt read. Yes there was laughter and love but I really appreciated the story behind the two single parents overcoming their anxieties and past. What starts off as enemies in the office to a truce eventually turns into love. The journey these MCs take had me flying through this story. It was worth every minute.

Wow, I loved this book. Amy Buchanan has really knocked it out of the park with her debut novel. I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. This is a workplace enemies-to-lovers single dad/single mom romance with some really funny parts where I laughed out loud. I loved Juliana and Ben, their families and friends. I felt like I was in a bit of a reading slump and this book got me out of it. Thank you to Amy Buchanan, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for giving me a chance to read this book early!

This was such a good debut, it had humor and heart with a female main character that I was rooting for so hard! I’m a sucker for a single mom and the fact that Juliana is also a widow tugged on my heart, but she’s so much more than a mom and widow and I enjoyed getting to know her character. The banter was witty, the spice was spicing and the whole thing was delightful. The narrator is one of my faves, I think she’s especially great at delivering snarky humor and there was an abundance here.

I am super sad that I didn't love this! I really need to stop requesting books solely for the pretty covers. The combative rivalry between the leads was a dynamic that I could not get behind. I usually enjoy workplace rivals to lovers, so I am unsure if this book took it too far or if I have outgrown the trope.

A lovely story about finding love after loss. I really enjoyed how this story doesn’t shy away from different forms of loss, of grief. Folding that into a rom-com is never easy, balancing the comedic with the real, the funny with the heartfelt, and Amy Buchanan did it with grace. As jabs were thrown like knives between Juliana and Ben, those quips quickly turned to banter, from venomous to playful, and as Juliana’s wall fell she was able to see past the verbal sparring deep into Ben’s heart. The ensemble in this story is stellar as well with a whip-smart cast of their friends and family surrounding them, adding many layers to this story. Humorous and heartfelt, Let’s Call A Truce will find its way to your heart.
My only complaint is the rivals at the beginning very quickly fell way to lovers, with insta-lust at the core. I only wish there was more tension, more rivalry between them before they fell in love. Because of this it did feel insta-lovey which to me made it harder to root for them.

I adored this debut romance! The office rivals-to-lovers plot was so well done, and I adored how nuanced both Ben and Juliana were. The story encompassed more than just their relationship; it also encompassed their relationships with their friends, their children, and their past romantic relationships. The book discusses some heavier topics, but the author handles them very well. I liked reading about Juliana's relationship with her children, as well as her friends. The romance in this was absolutely stellar; the dynamic between Ben and Juliana was great, and there was a lot of tension between them. While there was a third-act break-up in this (as many romances have), I found that the reason for this one actually made sense, which was refreshing! Overall, I would completely recommend this book, and it's definitely a new favourite romance book of mine. I can't wait to see what Amy Buchanan writes next!
