Adele Davenport is an aspiring YouTube influencer with a dream of living in a picturesque home in the French countryside. The only problem is that she doesn’t quite have the bank account to afford such a wish. So, when she finds the perfect chateau listed for sale online one day, she does the natural thing in this day and age. Adele posts an appeal to her followers recounting the trials and tribulations that she and her long-term boyfriend, Jack, have recently been through. Tacked onto the end is her brilliant idea of renovating and running a B & B in the Burgundy valley. All her fans have to do is pitch in a few pounds.
The next morning, Adele wakes up to a life changing email. Shockingly, a mysterious benefactor wants to purchase the crumbling abode for the struggling couple with all expenses paid. Before she knows it, the two find themselves in an idyllic town in France living in the lap of luxury without a worry in sight. Or so they think. The longer they live at Chateau Bellay, however, the more life seems to go off the rails. Tensions rise between Adele and Jack. The town seems strangely hostile. And Adele has the definite sense that she’s being watched.
It isn’t until a week after New Year’s Eve, however, when Adele’s sister, Erin, begins to panic that the worst may have happened. The ever popular Adele has stopped posting on her social media pages. And then Erin’s calls to her sister are no longer returned. Desperate to be sure Adele is okay, she drives down to the chateau only to find that her sister and Jack have vanished into thin air. With the police doing little to help, Erin starts searching herself. The more she uncovers, however, the more she frets. After all, she’s certain the town is keeping secrets. What are they trying to hide? And where is Adele?
Hmmm… I don’t really know quite what to say about The Escape. To be frank, it felt like the plot was equally split into two: the first dynamite half and the shocking, dark conclusion. Throughout the book, however, the action-packed plot and intriguing mysteries kept me utterly spellbound. After all, the synopsis was just so darn intriguing. And despite the disturbing turn that the book seemed to take, I found myself riveted to the pages, just desperate to learn how it was all going to end.
As I said, the first 200 pages were simply divine. Filled with evocative descriptions and an increasing sense of foreboding, the impending doom created a driving force behind the words. Between the dual POVs of the Davenport sisters who narrated the plot via before and after Adele’s disappearance, the storyline came alive with the creepy setting and uneasy atmosphere. Add in Adele and Jack’s increasingly fractious relationship and the town’s open hostility, and it simply sang with potential.
Then I got to the halfway point, however. Out of the blue, the plot switched from a gripping psychological thriller to something much more disturbing. Rife with an over-the-top feel and plenty of triggers, I really didn’t know quite what to make of this sudden, sharp turn of events. Don’t get me wrong, I was still glued to the pages. At the same time, however, it almost felt like two different books. Plus the characters I originally loved turned into caricatures of some lesser than female tropes that are far from my favorite. You know the kind: mindless, stupid, and with a flare for the dramatic?
All said and done, though, while I might not have picked this one up had I known the true course of the book, I still found it wholly addictive and binge-worthy in the extreme. From the well-plotted storyline that kept me firmly in its thrall despite some rather nasty reveals to the gasp-inducing twists and turns, there was plenty to love. Even if there was also plenty to dislike. So if you don’t mind a darker vibe that comes complete with a thoroughly twisted and disturbing premise, definitely give this one a shot. Just maybe check out my trigger warning before you begin. Rating of 3.5 stars.

Well, how to start? By explaining the three stars I gave the book I think. Three stars because the author did a terrific job in describing a couple of very, very stupid and shallow people. And a group of very, very bad and ruthless people. The similarities here are the fact that the couple is almost worshipped in public for their stupidity and the group of bad people is equally worshipped but not in public. On the contrary.
What have we here: Adele, a young woman with an IQ smaller than her shoe size - and her lying and cheating friend Jack. They're together for eight years already and they fit perfectly because they both feel that they 'deserve' all kinds of things without ever having to lift a finger. I applaud the author for making up a character like Adele - although I believe there are many 'Adeles' in this world nowadays. I try and avoid the whole fake world where the Adeles of this world live in and I'm happy to say I usually succeed - I stick to reading book revies ;-).
Anyway, Adele has a sister, Erin, and when their mum is very ill and Adele doesn't respond to Erin's messages, she flies to France to try and talk sense in Adele (for as much as this is possible). We all know what happens then: Adele and Jack are nowhere to be found.
It turns out Adele stumbled over a big secret - there's a group of very bad people who organizes 'parties' that are not exactly a party for everyone involved. I say 'stumbled' because it's not she's actively looking for the cause of the strange things that happen around her 'dream castle'. And now Erin has to find her sister, and soon!
Phew! Three stars for the characters, especially Adele and Erin who are equally stupid but both in their own way. Erin I liked a little better but not much. I have no feelings at all about Jack because he's hardly in the story except where Adele gushes over his good looks and how great he is - and then turning and looking into his telephone because she doesn't trust him. Talking about trust! Secretly looking in your partners' telephone is an absolute 'no' in my world.
Enough said. I think there will be enough readers to like this book as much as I disliked the characters and the second half of the story. The first half is more or less ok.

Honestly, I get why the book has low rating, can’t tell how successful the author was creating two of the most naive, shallow people I think I’ve ever seen or one of the most random wtf type of book. If you are interested in reading this book, (which I hope you don’t) the book just takes this weird kinky, sexual turn and things are revealed. I don’t have an issue with any of that, you do you type of thing but what I didn’t like was how random and out of the blue it seemed. And it gets progressively worse, with stalking, illegal gangs and online membership elite clubs it’s super random.
I can’t tell if Kelly was thinking that this twist is a banger equivalent but this was just horrifically bad. The shallowness, the stupidity and naivety of the two Characters Jack and Adele is beyond pause-able for a plot. I have some questions for the author on how this plot even came about and managed to run through it all. Why would you even create two of the most stupidest people ever, it was beyond frustrating to read.
If you read this book, surprise there’s things I think you should be warned about that those may not feel comfortable I.e torture, stalking and explicit sexual activities. Overall this is a terrible book that you should not read. Avoid at all cost. Not worth your time investment.

Apart from the outstanding ending, Ruth writes beautifully, and is capable of helping people like me (who suffer with aphantasia) be able to grasp how the scenes feel and might look. I'm utterly impressed!

The Escape is a twisty, chilling, dark read that I’d rate as one of the best thrillers I’ve read.
Firstly, I absolutely loved the setting in this book. I always love a house with a history and the old, isolated chateau featured in this book was brilliant to read about. There are lots of hidden corners of the house to explore along with the characters and I felt on edge whilst I was reading, wondering what they would find next. I sometimes felt like the house was trying to help with the investigation at times, revealing clues suddenly by making strange noises or through a shift in the light.
The story is told from the point of view of Adele and Erin with news reports from the investigation and comments from Adele’s blog inserted periodically. I actually ended up liking both sisters, though Adele did annoy me a bit at the beginning. Erin really shows what’s she’s made of in the book and it was lovely to see her grow in confidence as the book continues. I ended up feeling a lot of sympathy for Adele as it was tough seeing everything that happens.
I thought this book was incredibly fast paced and I couldn’t put it down once I started it. There was lots going on and I had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. It’s very dark in places which might not be to everyone’s taste but I didn’t feel it was overly graphic more that it helped add to the creepy atmosphere of the house. There were lots of twists that kept me guessing and just when I thought everything had been figured out something else happened to take the story in another direction.
If you are looking for a fantastic thriller in curl up with this Christmas I highly recommend this one. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

Two sisters: Erin, the older sister who struggles to take care of their mother when she develops cancer, & has felt overshadowed by her younger sister for most of her life - always prettier, more successful, & more valued by her parents, whilst Erin is mired in resentment. Adele, younger sister who has always felt judged by her older sibling, longs to be able to reach out & tell her that things aren't as great as they seem, but it never seems the right time. Adele is a struggling influencer/vlogger but when she posts a crowdfunding video online to help finance a move to Chateau Bellay in France, she is shocked when a mysterious benefactor reaches out & offers to buy it & let Adele & boyfriend, Jack, move in. They just have to agree to a few stipulations.
Erin is furious that Adele up & left to France, leaving her to deal with their mother's illness, but when she takes a turn for the worst, Erin sets out to find Adele & bring her home. When she reaches Chateau Bellay, however, no=one is home. Breaking a window to get in, Erin finds that none of Adele or Jack's things are inside & the chateau itself feels strangely unwelcoming. Neither Adele or Jack have been seen since New Year's Eve, & the people in the local village seem reluctant to talk to Erin about them both. What happened to her sister?
The narrative was split into two: Erin for the present, & Adele for the recent past. The first half of the book was very good, with Adele soon finding out that life at the Chateau is not all she dreamed it would be, as the cracks in her relationship with Jack are magnified. Het Chateau is een vlot geschreven thriller met een intrigerende setting. Het is leuk gedaan om een onhandig YouTube Vlogger stel als hoofdpersoon te nemen. De manier waarop hun entitlement en oppervlakkigheid worden neergezet, voelt levensecht en soms pijnlijk herkenbaar. Wat echter stuitend is, is het totale gebrek aan gezond verstand bij haast iedereen in dit boek—ze maken keuzes die zo onlogisch zijn dat het moeilijk is om mee te leven.
Desondanks blijft Het Chateau een vermakelijke thriller.

'Het chateau' begint met een interessante proloog waarin Adele haar volgers laat weten dat ze, samen met Jack, in het chateau woont. Alleen... voelt het er vreemd.
Dit vond ik dus al meteen interessant, want ik kreeg hierdoor spooky vibes. De sfeer is duister en mysterieus en je voelt aan alles dat er dingen niet kloppen aan dit chateau.
Vervolgens maak je regelmatig sprongetjes in de tijd. Je wisselt af tussen heden en verleden en steeds lees je dan vanuit Adele en Erin (haar zus). Erin is namelijk op zoek naar haar zus, want opeens stoppen de online posts. Er moet iets gebeurd zijn, want dit is niets voor haar populaire zus...
Je komt er ook achter hoe Adele en Jack bij dit chateau terecht zijn gekomen en langzaam worden dingen steeds duidelijker.
'Het chateau' begon voor mij heel goed en ik was heel benieuwd welke richting dit verhaal op zou gaan. Echter had ik de daadwerkelijke richting niet verwacht en om eerlijk te zijn vond ik het een beetje te ver gezocht. Niet alles kwam voor mij even realistisch over.
Wel heb ik sowieso enorm genoten van de eerste helft, maar het tweede gedeelte vond ik dus ietwat tegenvallen, oeps.
Toch was het zeker leuk om dit verhaal te lezen en ik wil @uitgeverijdefontein heel erg bedanken voor het recensie-exemplaar!

Vervolgens maak je regelmatig sprongetjes in de tijd. Je wisselt af tussen heden en verleden en steeds lees je dan vanuit Adele en Erin (haar zus). Erin is namelijk op zoek naar haar zus, want opeens stoppen de online posts. Er moet iets gebeurd zijn, want dit is niets voor haar populaire zus...
Je komt er ook achter hoe Adele en Jack bij dit chateau terecht zijn gekomen en langzaam worden dingen steeds duidelijker.
'Het chateau' begon voor mij heel goed en ik was heel benieuwd welke richting dit verhaal op zou gaan. Echter had ik de daadwerkelijke richting niet verwacht en om eerlijk te zijn vond ik het een beetje te ver gezocht. Niet alles kwam voor mij even realistisch over.
Wel heb ik sowieso enorm genoten van de eerste helft, maar het tweede gedeelte vond ik dus ietwat tegenvallen, oeps.
Toch was het zeker leuk om dit verhaal te lezen en ik wil @uitgeverijdefontein heel erg bedanken voor het recensie-exemplaar!

Ruth Kelly may well be a new name to many readers. It certainly was to me, until I read her previous (debut) novel, "The Villa". However, she is already an experienced and award-winning journalist who has also been responsible for ghost-writing a number of Sunday Times bestsellers. Having read "The Villa" I was so glad that Ruth Kelly is now publishing books under her own name and there was never any doubt that I was going to be coming back for her next book.
"The Escape" builds on the promise shown by this author in "The Villa" and delivers something even better. Adele Davenport is an online influencer - not an entirely successful one, but that doesn't prevent her from dreaming big. When she hits upon the idea of using crowdfunding to pay for a luxurious French château in need of renovation, she doesn't anticipate how poorly it is going to be received on social media. However, her surprise at the vitriol she is subjected to pales into insignificance compared with the shock of a mysterious anonymous benefactor offering to buy the château for Adele and her partner, Jack. Surely this is an offer that is just too good to be true ... isn't it?!
The setting works wonderfully well and even though it is a contemporary one, there is a sense of the Gothic about it and the supporting characters have a distinct du Maurier-like sinister menace about them. The novel deals with some quite dark themes and at times it put me in mind of something that might have been penned by Dennis Wheatley, such as "The Devil Rides Out". As in Ruth Kelly's previous novel, the characters are well-drawn and credible. The scenarios, whilst unusual, are still believable, which makes the growing tension are the more palpable. The pace of the novel is close to faultless. Yes, there are times when events develop a little more slowly, but only when it is appropriate for them to do so. At other times it is genuinely edge-of-the-seat stuff.
If Ruth Kelly continues to deliver entertaining reading material of this standard then she is definitely going to become one of my "must read" authors. Her first two books have already set her off on that path.

The premise of this book was intriguing to me. I enjoyed the first part and was absorbed in the idea of the old chateau, the life in France and the mystery benefactor. I was then surprised as I read further that there were quite a few descriptions of sex and sexual violence from then on. This didn’t bother me but I think it may affect some people’s enjoyment of the book, I’m not sure whether the author was going for the shock factor but it fell a little flat for me. 2.5 ⭐️for this one. Dull uninteresting characters added to my dislike.

Sadly, this book was very disappointing. I took the recommendation from the Richard & Judy book club so I am a little shocked that it was rated well.
It was an uncomfortable read, featuring torture scenes which I was not expecting.

‘Het chateau’ start met een spannende proloog die eigenlijk een transcriptie is van een vlog. Adele spreekt haar volgers toe, ze is niet op haar gemak. Ruth Kelly weet al vanaf de eerste twee pagina’s een akelige sfeer te creëren, waardoor je meteen geboeid bent om verder te lezen. Het volgende hoofdstuk wordt verteld vanuit het perspectief van Adeles zus Erin, we maken ook een sprongetje vooruit in de tijd. Ook dan is het duidelijk dat er iets niet klopt in het chateau van Adele. Daarna wisselen de perspectieven van Erin en Adele zich netjes af. We leren de zussen bijgevolg uitgebreid kennen door de gedetailleerde inkijk in hun levens en gedachten. Het contrast tussen hen is al snel helder. Ze zijn levensechte personages met de nodige emoties. Angst, mantelzorg, borstkanker, de drang naar geluk zijn maar enkele thema’s die Ruth Kelly bespreekbaar maakt door haar sterke personages.
De twee perspectieven dragen bij aan de spanningsopbouw in het verhaal. Als lezer weet je meer dan Erin omdat je leest over het verleden van Adele. Omdat ze uit elkaar gegroeid zijn, weet Erin belangrijke details niet. Tegelijk voel je ook dat Erin geheimen heeft, waardoor ook haar hoofdstukken boeiend blijven. Het verteltempo van Erins stukken is niet te hoog, terwijl dat bij het deel van Adele wel het geval is. Korte, flitsende hoofdstukken worden afgewisseld met langere, waardoor je leestempo nog meer geprikkeld wordt. Daardoor houdt Kelly je aandacht vast. Ze maakt geregeld tijdsprongen, maar duidt alles netjes boven de hoofdstukken aan met oudejaarsavond als referentiepunt. Het is duidelijk dat die avond een kantelpunt is in het boek, maar wat er dan precies gebeurd is, onthult Kelly niet meteen.
Tussen de verhaallijnen van Adele en Erin door heeft Kelly ook nieuwsverslagen en online reacties toegevoegd. De nieuwsverslagen spelen zich af in het heden en verhogen nog maar eens de spanning in het verhaal. Ook voelt het boek daardoor nog realistischer aan. De online reacties zijn gepost onder de vlogs van Adele en dragen bij aan de geloofwaardigheid van het influence-gegeven. Kelly ziet hier ruimte om online haat bespreekbaar te maken, iets wat helaas voor velen herkenbaar zal zijn. Alles wat met influencen te maken heeft in het verhaal is heel authentiek beschreven, wat het boek erg actueel maakt. Ook de macht van de hogere kringen in de maatschappij is waarheidsgetrouw neergezet. Iets na de helft van het boek lijkt het verhaal ietwat vergezocht, maar het doet je wel vragen stellen bij wat vandaag in onze wereld gebeurt.
Ten slotte scoort Ruth Kelly nog met haar sfeerschepping en vertelstijl. Ze besteedt uitgebreid aandacht aan de beschrijving van het Franse kasteel en de omgeving. Daarvoor gebruikt ze soms subtiele, leuke vergelijkingen, waardoor je meer stilstaat bij de details in de architectuur van het gebouw of de natuur. Over de woordkeuze is goed nagedacht, de enge sfeer in het verhaal wordt versterkt door zinnen als “Hoewel het akelig stil is in het chateau, komt het bos tot leven.” Kelly’s vertelstijl is filmisch, wat past bij de vlogs van Adele. Je voelt je belangrijk omdat je in die vlogs aangesproken wordt en je kunt je nog beter inleven in het verhaal. Langzaam worden alle mysteries rond het chateau opgelost. Net als je denkt dat het verhaal klaar is, word je weer verrast. Het einde is netjes afgewerkt, de epiloog is een fijne bonus. ‘Het chateau’ is een echte pageturner die thrillerliefhebbers in hun kast moeten hebben.

for me it wasn’t predictable but not shocking either. i actually liked the fact that adele wasn’t dead but jack was. the romance aspect being marcel and erin seemed a little random but hey ho. overall it was an easy read :)

* trigger warnings at the end of my review * 'The escape' is the second book that I've read by this author and, though it kept me hooked in the beginning, the only positive thing I have to say about it is that the author did a good job in creating mostly only dumb and shallow characters. This was a book club choice and on paper it would be right up my street when I am in the mode for something dark.
The characters were drawn that they were absolutely despicable and you really wanted to shake them as they were so vain. At the end I would have liked more disclosure about the male character and his motives as didn't feel he was drawn enough for me. Still thought he was a idiot though. The nurse sister I thought was a bit too weak and the ending was a bit too happy for me but it did make sense so closed off that circle. Yes there are plot devices that you have to suspend belief.
Living with genz I am getting so used to this world so it does make sense on one level and I can see how this is a real syndrome (without spoilers) if someone wasnt well rounded.
The book itself was in two parts - the first part was so boring that I really wasnt going to finish and then it got interesting and made sense as a thriller (perhaps read too many). That is why I havent given it a 4 stars.

Wat doe je als je zusje ineens van de radar verdwijnt? Geen appjes meer, geen nieuwe vlogs op haar inmiddels internationaal bekende YouTube-kanaal, geen enkele online activiteit. En dat terwijl jij haar dringend iets moet vertellen. Erin uit 'Het chateau' van Ruth Kelly besluit het er niet bij te laten zitten. Ze pakt haar koffers en reist halsoverkop af naar het afgelegen Franse platteland, vastbesloten om haar zusje Adele persoonlijk ter verantwoording te roepen. Maar wat ze daar aantreft, is nog verontrustender dan radiostilte.
Het kasteel waar Adele en haar vriend Jack namelijk sinds kort wonen, is compleet verlaten. Geen teken van leven, geen bagage, geen telefoons. Aan Erin dus de taak om uit te zoeken wat er de dagen voor en na oudejaarsavond is gebeurd en vooral waar de twee nu kunnen zijn. Al is dat makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. De gemeenschap lijkt niet open te staan voor vragen en de politie denkt dat de twee gewoon ergens lekker aan het genieten zijn van een vakantie. Maar daar gelooft Erin het zijne van. De grote vraag is dus: lukt het haar om op eigen kracht de antwoorden te vinden op haar vragen?

Ruim anderhalf jaar geleden las ik voor het eerst iets van Ruth Kelly. Haar thrillerdebuut ‘De villa’ wist me qua schrijfstijl zeker te grijpen, maar als thriller vond ik 'm net wat teleurstellen. Dat kun je van ‘Het chateau’ absoluut niet zeggen. Deze keer zat ik echt vanaf het begin van het verhaal op het puntje van mijn stoel.
Echte belevenis
De kracht van dit boek zit ‘m wat mij betreft vooral in de beleving. Of je 'Het chateau' namelijk nu leest of luistert: met haar toegankelijke schrijfstijl weet Ruth Kelly alles tot leven te brengen. Je hoort haast de krakende vloeren en gierende wind door het oude kasteel van Adele, voelt direct dat er iets niet klopt als Erin ontdekt dat alle spullen van zowel Jack als Adele spoorloos zijn. En dan is er natuurlijk nog het mysterie rondom de ‘aankoop’ van het Franse chateau.
Het klinkt als een droomdeal: een prachtig kasteel voor niets krijgen. Maar zoals zo vaak met dromen, blijkt het ook ditmaal veel te mooi om waar te zijn. Wie geeft er namelijk zomaar een kasteel cadeau zonder daar ooit iets voor terug te verwachten? Adele en Jack weten dan wel dat ze geen gasten mogen ontvangen, geen renovatiewerkzaamheden mogen verwachten en dat hun anonieme sponsor graag wil komen logeren als hij dat wil. Maar daar blijft het dan ook bij. En toch durven ze het aan om dit genereuze cadeautje aan te nemen.

Veel auteurs maken vervolgens de fout om door herhalingen het tempo te vertragen, waardoor je als lezer op een gegeven moment alleen maar hoopt dat het eindelijk voorbij is. Maar daar had ik bij ‘Het chateau’ absoluut geen last van. De snelheid blijft vooral intact door de veelzijdige karakters en verschillende perspectieven: je leest vanuit Adele in de paar maanden voor oudejaarsavond, vanuit Erin een paar dagen na oudejaarsavond en vanuit Sky News in het heden. Bovendien word je af en toe verrast door een berichtje dat Adele zou hebben ontvangen op haar social media. De ene keer is dat laatste positief, maar soms ook niet: soms zijn deze berichten haatdragend of zelfs stalkerig. Al dit samen maakt gewoon dat je geboeid blijft.
Maar er is meer. Elke keer als ik namelijk dacht dat ik het verhaal wel doorhad, gooide Ruth Kelly er weer een verrassende plottwist in. De auteur bewijst met dit. verhaal dat ze weet hoe ze spanning moet opbouwen, hoe ze karakters en omgevingen tot leven wekt en hoe ze je tot op het allerlaatste moment op het verkeerde been zet.

'Het chateau' is dan ook meeslepend, mysterieus en zit zo goed in elkaar dat ik het bijna jammer vond dat ik de laatste pagina omsloeg. En ik kan je vertellen: het is lang geleden dat ik dat had bij een boek in dit genre. Petje af dus voor de auteur!

Wat een geweldige, intrigerende en mysterieuze cover. Alleen het beeld maakt me erg nieuwsgierig naar het verhaal. Ik heb al eerder boeken van Ruth Kelly gelezen, dus ik heb samen met deze cover erg hoge verwachtingen van dit boek. Ik hoop op een pakkend, spannend en goed verhaal dat je tot aan het einde in spanning weet te houden.
Adele en Jack zijn influencers plaatsen een crowdfunding video in de hoop zo de kosten voor een Frans château bij elkaar te krijgen, die ze graag willen kopen. Een mysterieuze weldoener biedt hen aan het oude Franse kasteel voor hen te kopen. Het lijkt voor hen de reddingsboei die ze nodig hebben om hun relatie na een moeilijke periode te herstellen. Adele post online video's van de renovatie van het gebouw, waarbij ze gevolgd wordt door duizenden volgers. Het kasteel is niet wat het lijkt en de gemeenschap is verre van gastvrij. Wanneer de posts van Adele abrupt stoppen, reist zus Erin naar Frankrijk om polshoogte te nemen. Van Adele en Jack lijkt ieder spoor te zijn verdwenen. Erin ontrafelt een schokkende waarheid waarom de anonieme investeerder Jack en Adele het huis schonk...

Dan wisselt het verhaal naar het perspectief van Erin, zeven dagen na oudejaarsavond, waarbij ieder spoor van Adele en Jack is verdwenen.

Beide zussen en personages zijn erg goed, realistisch en divers uitgewerkt. Het is mooi hoe Ruth Kelly de twee zussen zo verschillend, maar wel op sterke wijze weet neer te zetten. Hierdoor kan je als lezer met hen beiden goed in het verhaal met hen meegaan en snap je hun beweegredenen en visie op de gebeurtenissen. Toch sprak Erin me absoluut meer aan dan Adele. Naast de twee hoofdpersonages zijn ook de andere personages mooi uitgewerkt.

Zouden Adele en Jack nog leven? Wat is er precies met het château aan de hand? Welk verhaal zit erachter die mysterieuze weldoener? Bij het plot vallen alle puzzelstukjes mooi in elkaar en worden alle vragen beantwoord.

In de thriller "Het chateau" van Ruth Kelly leren we Adèle en haar zus Erin kennen. Adèle is influencer en is al acht jaar samen met haar vriend Jack. Uit hun relatie is het vuur wat uit en Adèle denkt dat ze een nieuwe start nodig hebben. Zij schuimt het internet af en en komt zo op het chateau in Frankrijk. Adèle begint te dromen om daar te gaan wonen maar dit is veel te duur voor hen. Ze kan dit toch niet loslaten en besluit een oproep te doen in één van haar vlogs. Ze start zo een crowdfunding. Haar volgers vinden dit maar een raar idee, dat zij haar droom moeten sponseren. Adèle verliest stilletjes aan de hoop om naar hun kasteel te kunnen verhuizen tot er plots een mysterieuze weldoener opduikt. Hij of zij koopt het kasteel voor Adèle en Jack maar enkel onder bepaalde voorwaarden....
Adèle en Jack verhuizen naar Frankrijk en Adèle plaatst de ene vlog na de andere om haar volgers kennis te laten maten met hun chateau, dat toch wel een mysterieuze indruk geeft. Er is veel interesse in Adèle haar vlogs en haar aantal volgers blijft maar groeien. Ze krijgt reacties van "I love you" tot "I hate you". Maar plots komen er geen vlogs meer van Adèle en Erins telefoontjes worden ook niet meer beantwoord.
Het verhaal wordt afwisselend verteld vanuit het standpunt van Adèle en van Erin. Hierdoor leer je de twee zussen goed kennen. Adèle de persoon die graag in de spotlight staat en Erin de eenvoudige verpleegster die de zorgen draagt over hun zieke moeder die niet kan genezen van kanker. Het contact tussen deze twee is al een hele tijd op een laag pitje. Ze vertellen ook niet alles aan elkaar. Als Erin ongerust begint te worden of alles wel OK is met Adele reist ze af naar Frankrijk. Maar het koppel blijkt verdwenen. Veel hulp van de lokale politie krijgt Erin direct niet en ze besluit zelf op zoek te gaan naar de mysterieuze investeerder. Maar hoe meer Erin ontdekt, hoe ongeruster ze zich maakt en hoe meer vragen ze krijgt. Ze is er van overtuigd dat het weinig gastvrije stadje geheimen met zich meedraagt. En waar is Adèle?

Je vraagt je voortdurend af wat er gebeurd is. Je hebt al verschillende scenario's in je hoofd maar dan komt er op het einde nog een plottwist van jewelste en wordt je op nog volledig verrast. Het is een boek dat continu blijft boeien.

Na mijn grote enthousiasme voor De Villa (5 sterren) vorig jaar herfst is het wachten eindelijk voorbij want Ruth Kelly is nu terug met een nieuwe thriller: Het Chateau. De boeken zijn los van elkaar te lezen.
Influencer Adele en haar vriend Jack betrekken een oud kasteel op het Franse platteland namens een anonieme investeerder en posten hierover op social media. Maar het kasteel is niet wat het lijkt en de lokale gemeenschap is niet gastvrij. Wanneer de vlogs plots stoppen en Erin geen contact meer krijgt met haar zus, reist ze af naar Frankrijk om poolshoogte te nemen.
Het boek begint met een prikkelende proloog, waarin Adele op oudjaarsavond een vlog opneemt vanuit het kasteel en zij de instorting nabij is: ze is doodsbang. Een week later komt haar zus Erin langs, treft een verlaten chateau aan, en voelt dat er iets niet in de haak is. Bovendien begint het te sneeuwen, flínk te sneeuwen...
Door regelmatig sprongen terug in de tijd komen we meer te weten over de relatie van Adele en Jack en hoe zij aan het kasteel gekomen zijn. Naarmate we steeds dichter bij oudjaar komen, wordt de spanning meer en meer opgebouwd. Want niet alles loopt op rolletjes: Jack is geen gemakkelijke man; de moeder van Adele en Erin is ernstig ziek; wie houdt zich schuil in de bossen rond het kasteel en wat verbergen de bewoners van het dorp?
"Eenmaal terug in de hal vang ik iets op, een soort vibe, een hartslag, alsof het chateau leeft. Alsof geesten uit voorbije eeuwen hier rondhangen. Het zou gek klinken als ik het hardop zou zeggen, maar ik heb het gevoel dat het gebouw me iets wil vertellen."
Ik vond dit een creepy winterthriller die me steeds met vraagtekens en spanning verwachtingsvol liet doorlezen, totdat eindelijk de meest bizarre geheimen worden ontrafeld en het mysterie zich ontvouwt.
Wederom een goede thriller van Ruth Kelly, die naar mijn mening nóg beter was geweest als de geheimen iets minder bizar waren, maar juist eenvoudiger maar briljant.

While I have been enjoying all of the Christmassy reads throughout the month of December, I can’t resist a good thriller to break up all the festiveness and The Escape was just what the doctor ordered.
Social media influencer Adele rocks the boat with her fans when she starts a GoFundMe and asks people to help fund her dream of moving to a chateau in the French countryside with her boyfriend, Jack. She is astounded when a mystery benefactor offers to buy the chateau for her with seemingly no strings attached… at first, I couldn’t wrap my head around this wildly unbelievable scenario but actually as the plot thickens and more murky details are revealed, the reasons for the chateau basically falling into Adele’s lap don’t seem so far-fetched anymore and are in fact deeply disturbing.
The tension is t h i c k in The Escape, it literally does not stop mounting until the ultimate twist which I didn’t spot coming! As a thriller lover, there is so much to enjoy from the small town hostility to the isolated castle and with every character cloaked in suspicion. The book largely flicks between Adele and her somewhat estranged sister Erin’s perspectives, also across alternating timelines, which kept the story intriguing and steady-paced. I feel like things were kept fairly open at the end, which left me pondering certain characters’ futures… I’d be so keen to revisit them, particularly Erin and Marcel.
Overall The Escape is a well-written and chillingly dark tale which will be sure to keep you turning its pages. Thank you so much to @libraryofchlo at @panmacmillan for my spot on the blog tour!

I enjoyed The Villa, the author’s previous work so was looking forward to trying The Escape. This was another enjoyable read. There is a dark, foreboding atmosphere throughout the book and I enjoyed the cold, French setting as this added extra tension to the story. The characters were well written and I liked the two perspectives, including the chapters written as vlogs. The story starts off fairly simple but then takes a strange turn which adds an interesting, unique element. There were plenty of twists and turns which made the book very entertaining. Overall this was another fun, well written (although slightly crazy) story by this author which I will recommend. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this copy in return for an honest review.

What on earth just happened?
After Ruth’s last book The Villa, I was expecting another fast-paced thriller with a few twists, but goodness me The Escape is something else!
I’m fascinated by the power (and evils) of social media, so any thriller about an influencer immediately captures my attention. I’ve only seen a few episodes of Escape to the Chateau, but have always loved the idea of renovating my own piece of history in the French countryside…
After reading this, I still would but I’d definitely be doing it on my own terms!
This book has several POVs and starts off quite slowly, as we get to know Adele and Erin – two very different sisters. Kelly captures the (annoying) influencer voice of Adele perfectly, with plenty of the ‘guys – I’m obsessed’ and ‘OMG unreal’ we see on TikTok as she shows off the shiny polished part of her life.
It’s well-observed and written and is moving along nicely when suddenly – holy fuck – SOMETHING happens that knocks you for six! It’s so dark, grotesque and barbaric… you’ll love it. But I did not see that coming! Well done Ruth, very well played.
Gripping, disturbing and mind-blowing, with fantastic juxtaposition between the beautiful chateau and the ugly darkness taking place.

The Villa, the author’s debut thriller is fantastic so I was so excited for this book
Evie’s mum is dying, so she heads to France to bring back her influencer sister Adele, who somehow lives in a Chalet and YouTube’s her life!
Adele is your stereotypical vacuous influencer, quite unlikeable with an even more unlikeable boyfriend Jack. Jack hates dull-ass sister Evie, Evie hates Jack and Adele just wants to be famous - the problem is, there was not a lot more to any of them than that. There’s very little backstory or memories to connect them and make us care
I also found the pace really slow and the plot quite unbelievable and silly
I did enjoy the news reports in the audiobook which added some realism and drama. I love a theme tune - it’s a treat for the listener ☺️ I also thought the final reveal was decent and a lot better than the “what’s actually going on” reveal which I thought was pretty ridiculous - the epilogue was just confusing but by then I was just done
