I enjoyed the twists and turns of this thriller/horror novel. The story opens from the POV of a victim of a serial killer right before she is killed. The protagonist starts off in a sad place of grief and depression that is consuming her. A friendly co-worker offers the protagonist a quiet weekend alone at her family’s lake house. This is exactly what the protagonist thinks that she needs to get out of her monotonous grief. The other main character is a young lady that runs away from home and finds herself in a nightmare.
I liked how the author changed the POV between two characters and this became very interesting when the characters were together. The POV of the protagonist was in first person and the other character was in third person. The pacing of this book was fast and helped to build the tension that a thrill/horror book needs. The lake and surrounding area were a character in and of itself. The antagonists of this story were equally developed. I don’t want to say too much about the antagonists because you will just have to read the book. While we don’t know why the serial killer started killing, we do get a good picture of why the second antagonists is the way they are. The plot was full of twists and turns that would allow you to catch your breath before the author would press the gas pedal to the floor again.
I like to add quotes from the book that I am reviewing to highlight examples of the writing that I enjoyed but, in this case, all the quotes had spoilers. So, I will quote the first sentence of each of the female protagonists.
“The only thing worse than crying in a public restroom is being caught crying in one.”
“Kylie Grenko is a seventeen-year-old hurricane.”
While I’m not huge reader of thriller/horror, I really did enjoy this book and give it 5 out 5 stars. I do recommend this book even if you don’t consider thriller/horror your genre, this book a chance.
