What's hidden can haunt you...

When journalist Laney Brooks arrives in the quiet town of Sheffield, Connecticut and investigates a proposed real estate development, she uncovers a dark history buried beneath the picturesque Rockridge Reservoir. Decades ago, an entire village was flooded to create the reservoir, displacing families and leaving festering resentments.

As Laney digs deeper, a series of suspicious fires erupt in historic homes, revealing a sinister connection to the long-submerged town. With help from local reporter, Brett Emerson, and Sheffield’s police chief, Alan Deering, Laney races to unravel the mystery before more lives are lost. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her investigation becomes.

When the arsonist targets Laney herself, she must confront her own painful past while fighting to save herself and those she's grown to care for. As long-held secrets come to light, Laney discovers that home isn't always where you expect to find it.

Heather Pemberton weaves a taut, atmospheric thriller that explores the far-reaching consequences of greed and progress, and the bonds that tie us to the places we call home. With richly drawn characters and a vividly imagined New England setting, Hidden Below is a suspenseful tale of buried truths and the lengths we'll go to protect what matters most.

I really enjoyed this fast-moving story about a journalist who gets more than she bargained for when investigating crimes in a quaint New England town. I think the story struck a chord in me because we live close to the small towns of Fluteville and Campville in Connecticut, which were destroyed to make way for the flood control dam at Thomaston in the late 1950s. I'm fascinated by the stories of these lost communities now buried beneath water. How did the homeowners feel when their sanctuaries were taken over by imminent domain? So many memories lost. In "Hidden Below" one particularly traumatic memory of the destruction has long lasting effects ...

Pemberton's writing is clean and concise, but now without gems. My favorite line of all: "Home was simply the place inside yourself where you loved-- and lost. And learned to live again." It's a simple yet powerful sentiment, reminding all of us that while structures crumble over time, our sense of identity comes from within. I highly recommend this hauntingly beautiful book.

This novel has an intriguing premise and the writing and pacing is lively. Yet I found the story and characters lacking in depth. Like the writer narrator of the story who writes for magazines, this would have been an interesting short story for a magazine, but I was looking for more from a book with “thriller” in the title.
