Stolen Harlots #1

Bred by the Orc

Rate this book
I have always known my purpose in life was to marry a powerful laird and bear his sons to cement alliances…I just expected him to be, you know, human.

But I forgot the old legends. The ones about the others who come a’raiding through the stone circles during a full moon. The ones about the beasts who steal maidens and make them do terrible things on their altars to the carnal gods.

The eve before my marriage, I am one of those stolen, and I know I should be terrified of this monster and what he’s going to do to me…as a public spectacle. But is this not what I was born—and bred—to do?

Another super-spicy, instalove romp featuring the Harlot’s Guide’s list of positions.

Bred by the Orc by Veronika Kane, Caroline Lee
Stolen Harlots series #1. Historical erotica paranormal novella.
Sorcha Tarbert always knew her purpose was to wed a powerful laird and bear his sons to cement alliances. What she didn’t expect was to be sold out by a greedy clansmen to an Orc! Kidnapped by Drakolt who claims he is the Chief of his clan doesn’t really change her future all that much. Except the Orc says he’s going to bred her in front of his entire clan! Talk about pressure to conceive! But it’s been foretold that the union will build generations of alliances between the worlds, so who is she to complain about a little public nudity?

Sexy smutty romance with a bit of humor, green orcs and heat! Even though often virgins, these women know about their own bodies and what goes on between partners thanks to a (fictional) copy of A Harlot’s Guide to the Forbidden and Delightful Arts, written in a series called Bad in Plaid. Insta-loved and fated mates, these romances are so entertaining, I can’t help putting them to the front of my very long tbr.
I’m not a fan of the public viewing of the consummation but it’s handled well here.
Another new Orc romance next week!

I have read almost everything written by Veronika Kane, ARC reading the majority of her books, as you’ve probably noticed if you follow my reviews. However, I have not read anything by her historical romance persona Caroline Lee (GASP! I know!). So, when the opportunity to read a new series of novellas under both names came through, I jumped on the opportunity!

The Stolen Harlots series features 3 heroines who are “stolen” by a group of orcs in order to help unite the humans and the orcs, as well as save our MC’s (Drakolt’s) orc clan, Bladesedge, from the Bloodfire clan.

Sorcha, our book 1 heroine, is the leader and level-headed one of the group. She very much knows her role in her society is to marry for strategic alliances and continue someone’s bloodline. Because of how conditioned she has been to this lifestyle expectation, it makes total sense that she buys into the orc breeding prophecy pretty quickly and without any real fight. I love that what really wins her over is how much her mate actually cares for her, when she has been brought up to believe that would never be a possibility.

Roxanna, Sorcha’s sister and book 2 heroine, appears to be the hellraiser of the 3 women. She seems as though she has more experience sexually (I guess we’ll find out for sure soon!) and she definitely seemed to have the least control over her actions/tongue. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but that’s the feeling I get. And she’s being set up with the playboy, charmer Varkaan, so I just KNOW we’re in store for some good banter!!!

Effie, Sorcha’s and Roxanna’s cousin, who has been told she is less important than most her whole life is sweet and naïve. And she’s getting paired with scary, scarred Korvak. I totally called this couple from the moment he saved her!!! Especially with how interested she was in the sex guide (more about this later), I have a feeling we are going to get some shocking sexy times from her and a grumpy/sunshine trope that I’ll love!

I liked the idea of a prophecy that runs throughout the storyline, and I’m interested to see where it goes or if it has any part in books 2 and 3.

While I am used to the humor in Veronika Kane’s work, I did enjoy the historical romance approach to this series, especially since she still kept the orcs around! I have not read a historical romance, or any highlander type books, to date (not because I don’t want to, but I simply didn’t know where to start), and I found this was an easy way to ease into the topic! I totally trusted Veronika with this process and I’m definitely thirsting for more now!

I absolutely love connected series/spin off series. I especially love that this new series is meant to introduce us to the ancestors of the orc’s we’ve fallen in love with on Eastshore Isle! Isn’t that amazing?! Also, seeing as though this Kamasutra-esque book called A Harlot’s Guide to the Forbidden and Delightful Arts was also heavily featured in the book, and this book appears in several of Caroline’s historical romance books, I guess I’ll just have to check those out now (**nervously adds entire catalogue to TBR**).

Thank you to Caroline Lee/Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read a copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

Genre: Adult Monster Romance
Spice: 2/5 🌶️
*spice ratings are relative to similar books in the same genre*

The Catalog: FM, orc x human, kidnapped, fated mates, breeding (for pregnancy), insta-love, smirking virgin FMC (as opposed to blushing virgin)

Synopsis: Sorcha was supposed to be on her way to her betrothed’s home when instead she is taken by a kilt wearing orc. Drakolt, chief of his clan, has been told that in order for his people to prosper, he must capture his fated mate and breed her.

Thoughts:
Although I love the idea of Scottish orcs wearing kilts and taking their mates away from doomed betrothals, this was just okay. The insta-love was just a little too much, imo, and I wish there had been a deeper emotional connection. I recognize this is a pretty short novella, but even still, I wanted more development.

I did really like the feminist standpoints on equality in relationships and freedom in female sexuality. There was a really fun addition of a for-women sex manual that was both funny and endearing. Yay for female sexual empowerment in his-rom!

However, the breeding parts teetered on a weird line between historical duty and trad wife weirdness — which of course felt strange against the progressive ideals of the orcs. I think this is mostly a product of being a hist-rom vibe, but it ultimately sat weird with me and seemed almost like the FMC was never given a chance to decide about becoming a mother.

Frankly, I had no idea what to expect with this one. *nervous laugh* I have never read a romance that didn't involve two human beings. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. While I have nothing else to compare this book to in terms of monster romances, I do almost always read historical romance, so, there's something.

Overall, I found this to be a naughty, quick read that was perfect to read between ending a series and starting a new one. I will likely continue to read this series, even if I don't think I will become a frequent monster romance reader. Mostly, I am curious as to how the other characters we were introduced to in this book end up in future books. Additionally, there is some unfinished business that I could foresee causing some issues that I am curious to see pan out.

In sooth, I don't know much about orcs or commonly occurring themes in orc romances. I asked a pal of mine who is a monster romance royal, so all I knew was that I should expect large amounts of... fluid. I can't say I was sad to not have that included in this book, but I will admit I was a dash curious to find out how much "a lot" was. (I just kept thinking of... a fire hydrant. Will the heroine just rocket off into the sky from the pressure?) No rockets were involved.

What I was not aware of was massive eggplants (I mean MASSIVE) that gift the partner with instant and immediate cl*max. I had to backtrack and reread to ensure that was what happened. It was. Lucky lady.

For an adbuctor, I give Drakolt an A+. He was attentive to Sorcha's needs (in and out of bed...) and showed great restraint, which I have gathered is difficult for a "Fated Mate" who really, REALLY wants to jump said mate and, well, ya know. Sorcha, who we really can't fault for being initially resistant to the how kidnapped bride thing, sees past Drakolt's physical differences and embraces his emotional, tender nature. I'm sure that whole instant climax thing was a defining factor... I don't blame you, Sorcha. Your crusty, old intended Laird probably couldn't even keep er up, you know what I'm saying? Overall, I thought they were a pleasant couple I hope we see them in future books.

As for steam, br3d is in the title. I must admit, this was a more tame approach to it than I was expecting. But, I must admit, exhibition br33ding was unexpected. This title uses largely explicit terms and showcases a variety of actions and scene lengths.

Okay holy smokes I loved this subversive, smutty, hot, feminist tale…

Accompanied by one of her sisters and their cousin as well as a contingent of her father’s men, Sorcha is en route to meet the laird she’s never met but to whom she’s been betrothed. As she and her girls huddle in a vacant attic room one night during the journey, they are set upon by a band of orcs, who while they may have overwhelmed her guards, didn’t main or kill any of them. In very short order she finds that her father’s chosen delegate has betrayed her father by selling her to the orcs.

Chieftain of his orc clan, Drakolt is at the edge of where his parallel realm overlaps that of the humans where he meets his mate and soon to be mother of his clan’s successive leader. When the fiery Sorcha attempts to shield her female companion from the treacherous human John who sold her to his clan, Drakolt cleaves him clean in two before he harms the shocked woman.

A grateful and deeply confused Sorcha is both horrified by the events yet inexplicably drawn to Drakolt. As the other women are transported by two of Drakolt’s men, Sorcha spends two weeks in solitude with her orc fiance during which they engage in sensual delights she’d only read about in the intriguing sexual guide she brought with her. Along the way she finds herself more pleased than she’d ever have imagined with her unlikely betrothed.

The orc clan is egalitarian, which flies in the face of the feudal times where daughters were only worth the alignments that could be secured by marrying them off to neighboring villages. The orca also take great pride in ensuring the pleasure of their female mates, to wit: their anatomy provides her instant gratification.

This was a fun, high heat romp which I devoured in about the span of two episodes of The Brothers Sun.

I was privileged to receive an advance reader copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m very pleased to share my enthusiastic recommendation.

"Bred by the Orc" is book one in the "Stolen Harlots" series by Caroline Lee. Sorcha is human, and Drakolt is an orc looking for his mate. Sorcha thinks that Drakolt has kidnapped her and finds herself intrigued with him. This was an awesome start to a new to me series and has me wanting more. Caroline Lee has just enough spice to enjoy this book. I will definitely be moving on to the next book in this series. I have never heard of Orcs before until I started reading this author, and I can say for certain that I absolutely love Orcs.

My first read by this author. I'll be back! I liked how unapologetic FMC was about her sexual desires, and how MMC was all about it and wanted her as an equal partner. Not just a sexual conquest.

Caroline Lee is a master of the non=specific historical rmantic comedy. this is not as slap-stick as her other series, but it really doesn'ttake tself too seriously. I also really liked the fine line between choice and no choice she walked. Sorcha really didn't have a choice, but yes she did. I am not convinced that, should have he failed, Drakolt wouldn't have waited. This was very skillfully written and i cant wait to read the reast of the series!

A lot more fun than I thought.
The premise of the story was interesting and I like that it links (loosely) to her Caroline Lee historical romance series, enough to give it a nod, but not required reading. It did take me a few books to figure out what a KTEER was though. 😂

I enjoyed the modern orcs series. This was my first historical. I loved the characters. This is a fun, steamy book that is a quick read. Sorcha is a strong woman who always knew that she was going to be married off to strengthen an alliance for her clan. She never expected to be kidnapped on the way to her wedding. This was a fun start to the series. I'm looking forward to book two.

On the way to meet the laird to whom she's been arranged to marry, Sorcha, one of her sisters, and her cousin, are abducted by members of an orc clan who traveled through a standing stone circle through some magic associated with the full moon. Drakolt, Chief of the Bladesedge Clan, believes his fated mate is Sorcha due to a prophecy his grandmother, a mystic, saw. According to his grandmother, Sorcha must be bred in front of the clan, not only to be accepted as his mate by the clan but also to conceive a son and Drakolt's heir. The claiming ceremony is planned to occur in two weeks' time, and Drakolt takes the time wandering the Orc world's Highlands-like countryside to make sure no one from Earth has followed them and also to give them a chance to get to know one another. Will Sorcha and Drakolt make it to the Bladesedge Clan's home and the claiming ceremony without breeding? You'll have to read and find out...

I really liked both Sorcha and Drakolt in this novella. Sorcha is no simpering miss and takes her abduction in reasonable stride, especially after Drakolt demonstrates respect and caring for her. In fact, she's studied the Harlot's Guide in exquisite detail, and has been waiting for the opportunity to put knowledge to practice with a willing male. Drakolt is somewhat of an arrogant male but also recognizes that he wants a full partner in Sorcha as his mate and figures out what to do to earn her respect and love. His tenderness throughout the novella and especially during the Claiming Ceremony made me melt even more.

Age gap: Ages not mentioned but get the feeling the characters are mature, young adults, late teens/early 20s maybe (it's medieval times-ish).

Tropes: Stolen wife, breeding/pregnancy/public claiming, monster/orc romance, medieval times-ish, Fated Mates, my body betrayed me

SFCP (safe for childless people) until epilogue; main characters do not get pregnant/have a baby until the epilogue.

I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

I was wrestling between 2 and 3 stars. This isn't a bad book but somehow I found myself expecting a lot more.

PLOT: Sorcha is betrothed and sent to travel to her new husband lands, accompanied by her sister and cousin. On the way their party is sold out / attacked by a band of warrior orcs. Drakolt is the chief and he knows his mate is before him when he feels their connection. He takes Sorcha back across the veil between their lands and they head back to him village where he will breed her and have the son that was foretold.

THOUGHTS:

- This book was really quick. I knew it would be due to the lack of chapters but it really made the story feel jumbled and rushed. One second Sorcha is with her sister and cousins reading a saucy scroll and the next they are being rounded up and divvied up by the orcs.

- Sorcha is basically totally cool with the abduction, they just ride horses for a while, there's some sexual tension due to closeness and he feels her up. She's not sad, scared and it's kinda like their totally insta in love with each other and she's ready to jump his bones. That's cool and all but I prefer more of a bonding / personality and then smut kind of match.

- I get it, they needed to spend time in the forest and wait for the full moon or something but the whole wandering the forest thing felt super useless and made the plot freel stale since they have sex before then.

- Lastly, the smut was ok. Look we usually read these books for the smutty bits but..... It didn't do it for me. Maybe it's just me, but I LOVEEEE orc smut but this just seemed so quick and not satisfying in that department. Just instant orgasm, some thrusting and boom, it's over.

As always Caroline Lee is a hoot! We all remember the stormy, sexy fun that was last years Harlots Guide series, here we are again but with a monstrous twist as she joins her alter-ego Veronika Kane to bring us the Harlots Guide - Orc Edition. This story is a fun, exciting, wild romp! We get the Orc raiders coming through the stone circle to steal off with a human female to mate. But wait, this is a series so there can’t be just one. No, Sorcha is taken along with her sister Roxanna and her cousin Effie to complete the trilogy. Back to book 1 though, Sorcha quickly displays her bravery, determination and strength but is also surprised by her Orc Chief, Drakolt’s tenderness and gentle touch. During their fortnight return to their village, these two find themselves succumbing to the temptations of each other and bonding despite differences. Their journey combines the sweetness of new love with the heat of exploration. This is a quick read that will have you giggling and get your temperature rising. Whether you are a monster veteran or have never picked one up, this is gentle introduction the monster romance genre with all the fun one expects from Caroline Lee’s outrageous sense of fun.

I'm not sure why this book has so many high reviews.
This book threw me off something fierce.

It was the forced written Scottish accents and verbage combined, with an unbelievable plot (I mean YES, this is an insta-love orc book. . . But still.) and the FMC just accepting being kidnapped.

Literally, night one after she's hauled on the MMC's horse and thrown over his lap, he tells her he wants to breed her. Next thing we know she's fidgetting and wondering why something so unbelievably sexual with a stranger is turning her on. . . . . .Ma'am, sigh. I know, oh I know this is a barely 200 paged smutty book. But come oooooooon.

This orc just raided your town, kidnapped you, you watched him split a dude's head in HALF and you're already prepared to risk it all? You don't know him! I don't think you can even call this a "touch her and you die" trope or even a "I'm only nice to her". It just. . . .No thank you. We never get to know the characters. Not their motives in life. Nothing. They're just there.

Look, I picked this book up because my Goodreads goal is more than last year. I knew this wasn't going to be some masterpiece. I was just hoping it would be better than this.

The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is because the writing wasn't that bad.

3 stars, I really liked the cover and the author gave us a reason for the long 14 day delay before a public breeding. OMG I can't believe I just typed that. lolol
Many many times I just had to shake my head and laugh, slightly mortified. There were nice moments of sweetness and understanding but without the whole mating bind thing, not much to bring them together except close proximity travel.

-
Highlights & Spoilers:
Auto point deduction for oral after 4 days on horseback with NO bathing (5 actually if you count the ride to the deserted house the day before the kidnapping). YUCK!
All of a sudden there is a stream to wash in AFTER the act?

When they meet:
“Sorcha,” he repeated, his voice rumbling through my stomach and chest in time with that insistent tug which I now feared pulled me to him. “I have come for ye.”
His brogue was uncomfortably appealing. It made me want to hear him speak more, made me want to curl into his lap and play with the tips of the pointed ears I could see peeking from his hair. Made me wonder what he’d taste like.

Ha- I liked that bit, playing with his ears, curl in his lap...

I could say I claimed her, but in reality, this female had claimed me long ago.

4 stars

This was a simple, spicy, yet enjoyable orc romance. Drakolt was a sweet orc who is obsessed with seducing his mate in order to secure an alliance with her clan. He spends the entire journey back to his home slowly wooing his new bride, while Sorcha attempts to deny her attraction in return. And even though Sorcha was nervous about her new mate, she can't help but be intrigued by the passion and companionship his presence brings about. This was a quick and smutastic orc romance with a dash of humor and sweet moments between Drakolt and Sorcha. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series🖤

Tropes: fated mates, only one horse, obsessed hero, reluctant heroine, arranged marriage, forced proximity, he falls first, stolen bride, breeding kink, found family, smutty smut🔥

For only being around 150 pages this was entertaining & fun but also a little weird! It got off to a bit of a slow start but I was intrigued nonetheless.

I feel like this would be really good as an audiobook because of the language/speaking style that is used. It was a little hard to read because of the old style language that was used, I found myself retracing what I read, and changing words.

I did find a cringe I didn’t know was a cringe until I cringed 🤣 females using the word “piss” when referring to peeing. Idk why but I just don’t like it.

Anyway, once the orc gets the girl it jumps in pretty quick with the touching & tension. I mean it’s 146 pages. It was a less spicy than I thought it would be but the scenes that were there were good. As long as you can get past words like “cunny” 🤣

I was surprised to finish and immediately want to start the next book, I just need to know about the Orcs brothers and what happens with the other girls!

Maybe I haven’t read many books set is Scotland, but is it normal to have certain words spelled out phonetically to make it “sound” Scottish? Cuz that took me out a bit.

We also got a lot of “telling” and not “showing”
We get to hear all about how they’re talking and getting to know each other and she’s asking him questions to understand his culture. Do we get to be a part of any of that? No. No we don’t. We’re just told that they’re getting closer and building a connection.
I feel like there wasn’t much of a plot because the whole story was us just being told things and not getting to experience any of it

This was such a cute book. I am not usually a historical fiction girlie, but I do love the Veronika Kane Orc books I have read so far and this followed suit!

As big and scary and GREEN as orcs are, they always turn out to be fabulous, HUNKY, HOT husband/mates. So my next question is… where does a girl have to go to get my own jolly green giant with tusks?!

Bred by the Orc had me wanting to rush out to my local REN Fest in search of my own clan leader to snuggle up to and wait for the next book of this series!

This is a short and spicy ~historical~ monster romance

Sorcha, her sister, and her cousin are on the journey to Sorcha's soon to be husband when Orcs cross the Veil with the intent to take Sorcha as Drakolt's Mate. All three women are taken on separate routes to the Orcs' village (hello books 2 and 3).

I'm always a big fan of monster romance woven into other romance genres and highlander orcs??? Count me in.

It was fine, Sorcha annoyed me a little. She tried running away, yet she was perfectly docile and from the start let him do whatever he wanted with her. I understand fated mates and all that, but it was a little wishy-washy here. She was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, but in just few pages she was totally into fucking him. I guess they lacked depth and their bond seemed completely sexual. I like my fated mates to bond romantically/spiritually or get to know each other better, before they just fuck all the time ;)
