London, 1503In a city shrouded with dread, the arrival of Thomas Berrington, summoned by King Henry, sets the stage for a tale of sinister intrigue. London is gripped by terror, with whispers of demons roaming under the cloak of night, leaving a trail of gruesome carnage.
Amidst this chaos lies the allure of "The Beasts of the City," a mystifying tome of alchemy and prophecy. This elusive book promises immense wealth and power to those who can unearth it, yet perilous consequences shadow it.
Navigating the complex web of London's nascent printing industry, a blend of lawful and covert operations, Thomas enlists the expertise of two eminent figures destined for Thomas More and Thomas Linacre.
While entangled in this web, Thomas also grapples with a royal command from King Henry, concerning the contentious future of Catherine of Aragon. Concurrently, he is thrust into the heart of the macabre murders plaguing the city.
A fateful encounter with a noble associate of the King unveils a hidden realm of decadence and vice, steering Thomas closer to the malevolent force behind the slayings.
Joining forces with Will and Usaden, Thomas embarks on a perilous quest. They must unravel the enigma, tracing the sinister force luring unsuspecting victims to their doom. In a race against time, they strive to thwart further atrocities, even as their own lives hang in the balance.
"The Beasts of the City" marks the thrilling return of Thomas Berrington and his companions in an exhilarating new escapade, weaving through the shadowy streets of Tudor London.
As always a outstanding read. The players are always a joy to read they have so much character. Thomas Berrington is one of my favorites. The story has everything you would want is a story. The mystery, the adventure, very intriguing, hate and love. There is no way you could put the book down till the end. Thanks again, don't make me wait so long for the next book.
Historical Fiction. I love the Tudor period. Thomas Herrington is a moral man, a righter -of- wrongs who is at home in two different worlds-Spain and England. His adventures are always enjoyable.
I have read all the Thomas Barrington mystery books and have enjoyed each and every one immensely! These are all so much fun, so well written from page 1 to the very end of each. Every character, so different, so well developed, and change as we do with time. So I highly recommend these to anyone and everyone. And I thank David Penny for sharing his talent with the world.
I can't seem to find evidence on this site of the other books from this series that I read in the past. Anyway...I have definitely read previous Thomas Berrington books and enjoyed earlier accounts of his time with Catherine of Aragon. This book is filled with extremely gruesome acts and vile people. I wish I could swim some laps and get it out of my head as things got progressively worse. Note to self: Don't you dare pick up another one of these books.
I have read the whole series to this point and have discovered David Penny to be an amazing author. Thank you so much, I have truly enjoyed your stories. I have become very invested in the lives of your characters. They have made me cry as well as laugh and all those emotions in between. I look forward to their continued adventures
Thomas is once again called for by king henry to london from ludlow, he as usual gets in trouble when he gets there(no spoilers). This book contains alchemy, murders lots of deception, will and usaden are involved quite lot in the latter part of the book, but the ending for me was a bit too far fetched for me hence 4 stars.Sogo out and buy the latest thomas berrington book and ENJOY.
Excellent characters.and.story as.always. i.could.not put.the book.down. Now I.impatiently wait.for the next.in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading.this.and.trying.to.figure out the guilty parties.
This book is no exception to the others in this series. I have enjoyed the whole series. David Penny has a great imagination. I love the characters and their interactions. Well written.
this guy is unreal. You take stranger in just like that? No way. And this story is boring and nothing really happening.. Conversations are boring too. I had to skip a lot just to get more bring stuff. The characters are also flat and dry. I also did not liked that female character at all. I made it to half of the book, that is when I had enough and dumped it in the trash.
This is one of my favorite Thomas Berrington books. I enjoyed the historical descriptions of early London and the weaving of the Tudors into the story.
The fourth book in the Tudor era of Thomas Berrington series. Thomas is summoned to London by King Henry & is given a house to stay in as the King asks him to talk with/encourage Princess Catherine of Aragon if she’d marry King Henry’s younger son Harry after the death of his older son Arthur & Catherine’s first husband (think this is a little weird myself). As Thomas is going back to where he’s staying rescues a young couple being set upon by some thugs. In Thomas’ usual fashion gets himself into “trouble”. Will & Usaden decide that knowing Thomas’ proclivities come to London to assist.
This book really hits upon the printing battles that were going on in London at the time & some darker alchemical experiments that were popular with some of the titled men.
I stumbled onto this series as a fluke, but am glad I did. Feel like I’ve been with Thomas, Jorge, Belia, Usaden while watching Will & Amal grow up. At Thomas’ current age I’m curious to know how many more books will continue to come for these great characters.
