Sheriff Hayden Duke was born on the Pilgrim, and he expects to die on the Pilgrim, like his father, and his father before him.
That's the way things are on a generation starship centuries from home. He's never questioned it. Never thought about it. And why bother? Access points to the ship's controls are locked, the systems that guide her automated and out of reach. Life isn't perfect, but Hayden has all he needs to be content.
Until a malfunction forces his wife to the edge of the habitable zone to inspect the damage.
Until she contacts him, breathless and terrified, to tell him she found a body and it doesn't belong to anyone on board.
Until he arrives at the scene and discovers both his wife and the body are gone.
The only clue? A bloody handprint beneath a hatch that hasn't opened in hundreds of years.
M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.
To learn more about M.R. Forbes or just say hello:
I have reviewed what feels like a crap ton of novels and series in this genre, and I try to do so without giving anything away that would keep the reader from enjoying the full experience.
I this case, in order to share with you how amazing this concept is, I have to give something away.
Well, I'm not gonna do it!
Read this set, and if you're not completely blown away before you're half way through, you haven't been paying attention.
Sorry. They all I've got right now. But my next step is finding more of MR Forbes' work and opening to page 1.
“Ploddingly” may not be a word, sorry. I wanted to like this book but there are so many uninteresting details to slog through. I stopped on page 129. The final straw was this sentence “They killed the crew, but not before they sealed the city to protect the people inside”. First “they” being the monsters, second “they” being the crew. I’m out.
Yep, I read this again… short term memory issues. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it as much if not more this time around. Fell in love with the characters, the good guys… Recommend this to anyone who loves science fiction. Thank you, again, for a great time spent with your words and my imagination!
What a ride this turned out to be. Post alien earth that really started on a starship then twists, turns and a surprise or five! Had a hard time putting this down! Well done!
Enjoyed and liked how the main characters were developed. If you enjoy complex characters with flaws and take responsibility for their actions this series will satisfy. Kept my attention through all the books. Glad I purchased the whole series.
I really enjoyed the characters and tech. The story felt enough in reality but also plausible. Li ke the Others and I'd like to see more content on them. Maybe a mission to their home planet.
