The Splinter
After an intriguing discovery is made in 1977, efforts are made by the scientific community to persuade alien artifacts found in an ice sheet to work but all attempts fail until a gifted scientist with a different approach takes on the problem. After years of struggling and under growing pressure to produce from the powers that be, the scientist in question makes the breakthrough that everybody has been waiting for. What is the discovery that promises to change everything overnight? According to the scientist in charge, it’s a time machine.
Extensive testing follows, until the first human test subjects are allowed to travel through the machine, the result, time is no longer a mysterious dimension that is out of reach - the continuum can be breached at will. The only question now is how best to use the discovery. The scientist in charge is determined to combat degrading climatic problems that have already cost millions of lives, the military however have other ideas and take over the project as soon as they are convinced it works. The scientist responsible for the breakthrough will be allowed to carry on his work regarding the climate as long as he co-operates with them from time to time. A jump is made three years into the future to check out how the climatic conditions have changed in that short time frame. What the jump team discover only goes to prove how desperate their situation really is. A catastrophic weather event has flooded a large area of the mainland around the capital, killing hundreds of thousands of people. During the same jump, a number of bodies are discovered. They are part of an elite division of soldiers that have been killed in a way that is unfamiliar to the military personnel in the jump team. A second jump to almost the same time and place is ordered by the Military in an attempt to discover the truth. We are no longer alone. Alien beings are attacking us in the future, killing at will but also instigating disappearances. One of the jump team attempts to intercede and is taken. The development puts Military Command on alert and plans are made to attack the aliens in the future by using a second mirror that has been discovered in the Antarctica. The scientists involved argue, unsuccessfully, against the suggestion, other specialists taking over the operation of the second mirror.
The second mirror has been activated two days earlier than expected already allowing the aliens access to our timeframe. The entire base personnel are either dead or missing. When a strike force is moved into the area a scientist out of the future is unexpectedly waiting for them. He wants help in his own time. Where survivors of the climate problems are being attacked by the same attackers. He also explains that the `aliens´ are actually the survivors of an underground attempt at surviving the climatic effects - they are human! The survivors from the underground are cannibals! The strike team leader agrees to help and travels over two thousand years into the future with an attack force.
