Welcome back to the Skeleton Crew. Keep your knitting needles sharp and have a strong brew in hand for their next adventure.
Life for gender-fluid, autistic vampire Hyde Snodgrass has never been better. Her cosy village bookshop is thriving as is their new relationship with witch and taco bus owner, Teresa Vega. Autumn is in full magical tilt in their corner of the Scottish Highlands.
Everything is beautifully perfect right up until a tainted meal ends with Hyde sick and someone dead.
The police immediately suspect the restaurant owners. Hyde and Teresa find themselves drawn into yet another investigation, trying to save their friends from arrest and themselves from a murderer. The situation becomes even more complex when family feuds become tangled in the midst.
Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about shifters and damsels in distress. She prefers irreverent humour and unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive collection of books and video games.
I received a copy through Gay Romance Reviews and voluntarily reviewed it.
I really liked the first book in this series and was so excited to see this one pop up on GRR, I requested, it, got approved and started it as soon as I finished my previous read. I really liked this one, the characters are great and I enjoyed reading about them and seeing the mystery develop.
I really like how this author writes autistic characters. Main character Hyde is a genderfluid autistic vampire and I really like reading about them. They have the space to be themselves as well as a whole town of supportive characters around them. It's just wonderful to read about. They're a very relatable character and I like seeing how their autistic traits pop up throughout the story.
The romance is great too. I like reading about Hyde and Teresa now that they are together. They are a great couple. There is this sweet scene were they're reading research books together in a cozy setting that was just so sweet. I also appreciated how Hyde tried to understand Teresa's emotions in a situation were they didn't feel the same. They are just so cute together and I like how much they care about the other. Teresa's anxiety is well written too and relatable.
The mystery isn't the strongest part of this series, but I still enjoy it and think it ads to the story. There aren't a bunch of suspects as in most cozies, instead it's more focused on what happened and figuring out who of the few suspects are the murderer. I wasn't too surprised when I found out who the murderer is, but there was an interesting twist along the way. There is some magic involved as well, which I liked. I like reading about the various paranormal species.
To summarize: I really enjoyed the first book and book 2 is just as good. I really like reading about Hyde, a genderfluid autistic vampire. They are so relatable and I enjoy reading about them. I like how this author writes autistic characters. The romance is really sweet and I enjoyed reading more about Hyde and Teresa. Teresa's anxiety is well written too. The mystery isn't the strongest part, but I still enjoy seeing it all play out. The magic and paranormal creatures are a nice addition to the series. I already look forward to the next book!
Thank you so much for Hot Tree Publishing for giving me a review copy! I loved this one just as much as the first. It’s a brilliant sequel, and also would be a strong standalone story too. Very much looking forward to the next one, with how this one ends! Little bit more open-ended to make way for the plot of the next, and I’m excited for it!
These books are the maximum amount of cozy—so soothing for my anxiety. I love the characters. The author hits the right balance for me of having some plot and world building without bogging the story down. It’s a quick, light read. Can’t wait to read more in the series!
★★★★☆ A Fatal Autumnal Stew by Dahlia Donovan is such a delightful read! It's the next installment in the Skeleton Crew series, and it brings back the lovable Hyde and their cats. Hyde is thriving with their cozy village bookstore. Plus, their relationship with Teresa, is really blossoming.
The mystery is really well-crafted, with lots of twists and turns to keep you hooked. The dynamic between Hyde and Teresa is so heartwarming, and their teamwork in solving the mystery is both entertaining and endearing.
Another winner in my book, I cannot wait for the next installment!
Perfect cozy paranormal mystery for anyone seeking a quick satisfying escape.
Welcome Back to the Skeleton Crew. Life seems idyllic for gender-fluid, autistic vampire Hyde Snodgrass, who enjoys a flourishing bookshop and a budding romance with witch Teresa Vega in their charming Scottish village. However, their perfect autumn takes a dark turn when a tainted meal leaves Hyde ill and a dead body in its wake. With the police eyeing Teresa’s taco bus as a prime suspect, Hyde and Teresa must dive into another investigation, navigating family feuds and hidden motives to clear their friends' names and uncover the true murderer before everything they cherish is lost.
Picking up just a week after the events of the first book, this sequel throws readers right into a whirlpool of danger, intrigue, and unexpected twists. There are close calls at every turn, with tense moments that keep the reader on edge, all while a paranormal world filled with witches, vampires, druids, and demons continues to unfold. With curses, arson, and murder, the stakes are higher than ever, but what's most impressive about this book is how it balances those thrilling plot points with a sense of warmth and community that feels like a comforting hug.
The characters in this book come from all walks of life, representing a beautiful spectrum of gender identities, sexual orientations, disabilities, and neurodivergence. The paranormal elements are, of course, a key part of the story, but it's the characters themselves—each unique, complex, and fully realized—that make the world feel rich and full of love. The diversity isn't just window dressing, either; it's deeply woven into the fabric of the narrative, with moments of acceptance, mutual respect, and a sense of belonging that stand out in every interaction.
Even in the most intense moments, the characters offer little quips of comedic relief, lightening the mood and reminding the reader that even in a world full of danger, love and humor can still shine through. This sense of joy amidst the chaos is one of the book's most endearing qualities.
Perhaps my favorite part of this installment, though, was watching Hyde finally come into their own. After a life full of trauma, Hyde has the chance to grow, and their journey towards self-empowerment and resilience is both inspiring and poignant. They finally stand up for themselves, showing a strength that has been simmering beneath the surface for far too long. Hyde’s character arc is one of the most satisfying in the series.
Overall, this book delivers exactly what fans of the first book will be looking for: a fun, fast-paced mystery with paranormal thrills and plenty of heart. It’s a light, easy read full of action, warmth, and acceptance—everything I needed and more. If you’re looking for a story that feels both exciting and comforting, this one is an absolute treat.

Book two in the Skeleton Crew—the knitters and crochet group that meets at Hyde’s bookshop— Paranormal Cozy series focuses on a gastronomical murder. It’s autumn in South Myrddin in the Scottish Highlands, where abandoned magical children feel welcome to call it home. It's an absolutely brilliant name for this town, too.
Gender-fluid, Autistic vampire Hyde Snodgrass owns and runs the village bookshop, while witch and taco bus owner Teresa Vega is Hyde’s partner. Together, they are the best of friends and know each other well. These two main characters are not only in tune with each other in every way but also such a delightful couple.
This magical village has some fantastic characters but, unfortunately, also draws in some bad ones. Poor Hyde truly has her/their ‘bad’ situations in this story. However, I feel she/they have grown somewhat, and it is wonderful to witness as a reader. (I don't want to give too much away.)
I love to escape with a good cosy mystery, and this one is perfect for precisely that purpose. There is an excellent balance between paranormals and humans, as well as the romance and mystery aspect. A little humour sprinkled here and there elevates the story even further. I am excited to know a Christmas/holiday story is coming next.

Tropes: found family cozy mystery autistic MC genderfluid vampire paranormal beings
A Fatal Autumnal Stew is book 2 of the Skeleton Crew series. I loved entering this world again and seeing all the characters from book 1. This time around, Hyde and Teresa are officially dating! YES! And they've been invited to dinner over by their friends who own Al Dente. Only dinner ends in a murder and Hyde almost choking to death their-self. Was Hyde or Rocco the intended victim? Who cursed the dinner? And WHY?
I love a good cozy mystery and this one didn't disappoint. I love Hyde. Hyde is a genderfluid vampire who's also austistic, and Hyde runs the local bookshop. Hyde's girlfriend is Teresa, a witch who owns the local taco bus (yes, bus!). I have always loved how understanding and gentle Teresa is with Hyde. It's a beautiful relationship. Emory, the eldest druid in town, was more prominent this book and I really love how Emory looks after Hyde too-- actually let's face it, the whole town rallys around Hyde!
Do I still dislike Pacheco? He's a vampire and chief inspector with the police. I did until the very end. Maybe Pacheco is turning over a new leaf. But what I really want, is all of Teresa's recipes. Every time she describes her tacos and mole sauce, I salivate. They sound delicious! I'm excited to see what mischief the town gets into in book 3!
This is a fabulous follow on from book one in the Skeleton Crew series, it picks up right from where the last book finished. That being said, you can still read this even if you haven't read the first book in the series as there is a brief summary of what happened in the first chapter.
Once again we follow Hyde, a gender-fluid autistic vampire and their bestie (who they are now in a relationship with) Teresa who is a witch and taco bus owner. After a dinner out, where Hyde becomes very ill and someone else dies, the pair find themselves in an investigative role again, trying to work out what happened and who did it.
This is now the second book I've read by this author and I truly love how the characters are written. Despite all the murdering the author writes a world I'd want to live in. I also loved seeing Hyde and Teresa's relationship develop. "Teresa hadn’t fallen in love slowly. It was almost embarrassing how quickly she’d gone from “I enjoy this vampire” to “I would wreck a fair amount of Scotland for them.” I’m being mildly dramatic, but only mildly."
Although you can read this without having read book one, please do yourself a favour and grab it too. They are both so lovely and I'm so glad to have found this author.
Hyde Snodgrass, gender fluid and autistic. As well as a vampire, is happy with his life. She has a relationship with the witch, Teresa Vaga, who runs the taco bus. When a lovely dinner leaves Hyde sick and another dead, his life changes. Naturally, the police suspect the restaurant owners while Hyde and Teresa are sure they are innocent. Once again these two become involved in the investigation. Family drama and twists and turns make the final resolution a surprise.
You cannot help but fall in love with Hyde, Teresa and the rest of the residents. Each one has their own quirks but they are all accepted. Hyde has signs posted indicating how he feels about noise and gender, which is quite fluid. The first page will immerse you into the town while enticing your heart to fall in love with these quirky residents, even the ones who not quite as likeable. The plot had a few twists of its own and the resolution left us wanting the next book to see if our questions are answered. Run out and get this one and prepare to become a reading member of this incredible town and while you are there, join the Skeleton Crew. I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion.

𝕄𝕪 𝕣𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨: I adore these cozy mysteries .. we meet Hyde (they/them/she) depending on the day - book store own, vampire and autistic - next to their two cats Mortar and Pestle there’s only one other love they have Teresa the witch and taco shop owner. (Book 1 explores there relationship)
Dahlia Donovan did it again with the Mysteries of Hyde, Teresa and the Skeleton crew in their little found family in the Scottish Highlands. We face adversity and having to investigate like the witch and vampire they are.
The way Dahlia Donovan writes these cozy mysteries makes my heart smile (not to mention hungry) the love and passion she puts into these stories are evident and the exploration of neurodivergence is fantastic and the understanding that someone’s our favourite family is the one we aren’t born into. It is just sheer perfection.
I cannot wait to see what book 3 has Hyde and Teresa doing.
I’m completely in love with Dahalia’s cozy style of romance, and this paranormal mystery series is super adorable.
Set in a small town that acts as a kind of haven for rejected or ostracized people/supernatural.
Hyde and Teresa are pretty cute, especially now that they're dating, but they can’t seem to keep out of a mystery. Whether they like it or not, they keep getting pulled in.
It’s a great cast of characters, a variety of vampires, witches, druids and more, with small-town personalities. Where everyone knows everything that’s happened moments later, but will also have your back. Especially Hyde, the townfolk love them.
Can’t wait to see what else this cute couple gets embroiled in.
I really enjoy all types of books but when I am in the mood for a cosy mystery story I love the books in this series by Dahlia Donovan. Teresa is more involved in this one because Hyde has been poisoned, but I still must admit that Hyde is my favorite character. I mean even her/their name Hyde Snodgrass is marvelous. The way they have figured out how to announce how they are feeling each day, by signs at the front of their bookshop is so clever that I want to have signs of my own to tell my family how to approach me everyday! The whole town full of magical misfits and a simpler way of life is one that I love reading about and I’m sure a lot of us readers would like to live there. Ms. Donovan does a great job of taking the small English town trope and adding magic, knitting, and more modern sensibilities to gender and giving us a sweet little read. If a book could be a cup of tea and a piece of shortbread then this book would qualify so sit down and savor it.
I’m enjoying this series with its endearing characters, and cozy small village setting. I love the names of the village shops, which are a delightful play on words, and how the village provides a haven for those who need it.
I love Hyde and Teresa’s relationship and how they’re each aware and thoughtful of each other. Hyde’s autism and Teresa’s anxiety are thoughtfully and sensitively written. They love how everything comes together to solve the mystery.
Mortar and Pestle shine in every scene. I wouldn’t want to cross those cats, or get between them and Hyde if they’re threatened like in this story.
I’m enjoying getting to know the rest of the villagers, and love the idea of a knitting group of paranormals meeting in a vampire’s bookshop, I like how the different characters all bring their strengths and quirks to the story.
I’m intrigued by the threads still hanging about Hyde’s family and grimoire and am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I think I actually squealed when I received the ARC for this book. There is just something so cozy and warm about Hyde and Resa, and the entire crew living in South Myrddin.
A Fatal Autumnal Stew is the epitome of found family, and while the entire town of South Myrddin is built on this concept, this book really pays focus to this trope. It was tense and cute and I wanted to strangle some characters. We have more mystery, murder, knitting, meddlesome familiars, and cute cat friends.
Someone murdered Rocco, the estranged brother of Amalia, the co-owner of Al-Denté, and all clues point at her. But did she do it? You’ll have to read to find out.
I LOVED Hyde’s actions at the end. I’m so proud of them.
This book is fast paced but doesn’t take away from the storyline. I’m not normally a fast-paced book lover but this series is definitely winning me over. I cannot wait for book 3.
I love this series so much. Not only is it a cozy mystery, but there are also some lovely moments. Hyde and Teresa's relationship is beautiful, and I love to see how well they understand each other's needs. Once again, something is always hiding around the corner that threatens their little town. It looks like Pacheco is becoming a little more understanding of Hyde, and I'm excited to see if there is any development in their interactions. I'm also curious about Hyde's family and any secrets yet to be uncovered. I look forward to the next book in the series; it's perfect to read during this time of the year.
After loving the first book I was so excited for book two with our skeleton crew. Our cosy mystery is back with our favourites and as fun as ever.
It’s a quick, easy read that can easily done over a nice brew with cosy vibes. Aka I had my tea on hand with a blankie.
This is the perfect afternoon read and I look forward to the next one. It’s also super inclusive and fun! I want to visit this town in Scotland, shame it doesn’t exist. I’ll stick to this cosy, paranormal mystery series instead!
Thanks to Hot Tree Publishing for my copy, these are my totally honest and totally awesome opinions.
Who is Hyde threatening at the beginning of the story? What is the threat? Who are Amalia and Battista? What business does Hyde own and run? Who is Teresa to Hyde? Reading about Teresa and Hyde's giggles was so much fun. Who gets caught up in an attempt at being murdered, and who is murdered? I loved the sound of the Xuixo pastry! I want to try one! Oh, twice in 24 hours, Hyde goes off on Pacheco! WOWZERS! Who is Shikoba? What tea does Gia spill about herself to Teresa? Why does Enzo go through a window? What did he do? Who is Bram? I loved Bram. I'm unsure how I felt about him by the end, but I cannot wait for the next book!
Thank you to the author for my review copy. My opinions are my own.
It's back to the magical South Myrddin cozy village with the continued adventures of Hyde Snodgrass, autistic gender fluid, bookstore owner, and vampire. This story is cozy fantasy mystery, with a side of murder.
I love Hyde with all my heart and they are living my dream life.
Read this series if you enjoy cozy mysteries, cozy fantasy, or stories about bookstores.
There isn’t anything I don’t love about this series by Donovan. The Skeleton Crew is my new jam and if you are looking for a new cozy mystery series to invest in, then this is the one. Diversity. Romance. Found Family. Plus a mystery to solve every time, there’s nothing not to love about this series.
I received a free copy of this book, and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Somehow I missed the first book in this series! But this one was very fun! I enjoyed meeting the characters and the interacting seemed very lifelike to me. I especially liked it when Hyde was upset with Pacheco. It seemed like Pacheho needed a reality check.
This book is a light romp through a Cozy paranormal town where a murder happens, there's a knitting/ crochet club, but a book store is still the main setting for the story. :)
Another good cozy mystery from this author. I really have a soft spot for Hyde and Teresa, especially Hyde. I also love their home in South Myrddion. This home for supernatural misfits is amazing and I want to live there. I want to get to know more about the other colorful characters here in this small Scottish town.
I love this cozy mystery series with vampire Hyde, their wonderful bookstore and taco truck owner and witch Teresa. This one has them trying to prove their friends did not commit murder with their food. The setting is again wonderfully done, the characters and their friends are great to hang out with and the mysteries are well crafted. Hope this series runs for a long time.
Thank you to hot tree publishing for providing me with a review copy of this book in return for an honest review!
These books just hit so good!! The second in the series continues to follow Hyde, our autistic, non-binary vamp as they find themselves in the middle of another murder case. The mystery starts when a townfolks visiting family member is suddenly murdered during a public dinner!
This book is just as cozy but undeniably mysterious as A Curse For Samhain, I am still absolutely loving our cast of characters and their shenanigans.
But poor Hyde, always getting dragged into the goings on of the town, one day I hope they will get peace again... In the mean time I will continue to enjoy their odd little town full of bright and colourful characters!!
Her life has never been so good and she loves them so much. She has a meal before getting ill and someone dead. Now she needs to try to solve the crime before the killer strikes again. She needs to prove they are innocent as well. See how it will go
I am loving this paranormal cozy mystery series and this is a perfect example why. Hyde and Teresa can’t seem to help but be drawn into mysteries and are determined to help their friends. This story will have a few twists and turns in it but all works out well in the end.
The characters continue to be well written and realistic, Hyde, the genderfluid autistic vampire has the space to be themselves with the town supporting them. The romance between Hyde and Teresa, while not steamy, is sweet and cozy. Once again, my only complaint was the lack of knitting…
