Lunetti Pack #2

His Mate By Resistance

Rate this book
His boy deserved better. He deserved to be the centre of someone’s world.

Luca stumbled on something he shouldn't have and now someone's trying to kill him. If only he knew what and who. He hates that he has to use his hacking skills against his own pack as he hunts down the traitor. He hates it even more when his Alpha sends him away for his safety. Hex-Rated—the hottest gay nightclub in New Trinity—is the last place he expected to be hiding out. The water witch who owns it better keep his damn hands to himself.

Cal has no time for the three crime families that run the city. He's worked hard to keep his club on the right side of the law. That's all put at risk when a favour for a friend has him faking a relationship with a Mafia wolf shifter. Luca's a criminal and there's no way Cal would go there for real. Even if the shifter brings out every protective instinct in him. Even if Luca is so good for him despite himself.

His Mate By Resistance is an enemies to lovers MM Paranormal Romance. It's book two in the Lunetti Pack series, but can be read as a standalone. It features forced proximity, a fake relationship, knotting, a water witch Daddy, and magic sensory play. There is no mpreg in this world.

Once he’d settled into his wolf form, he sat back on his haunches, head tilted up to watch his witch like he was the moon calling to his soul.

ARC review

I liked the cute and cool shifter moments in this book, as well as the sweet dynamic in the relationship between the MCs. Unfortunately the plot (of which there was a lot) was a bit all over the place, with little to no explanation of what was going on. So much of the plot is about gang politics/relationships, but they covens and pack are never properly introduced or explained. They’re just name-dropped like you should already know that info.

So much trauma and action is going on, but the book starts in a way where it feels like you’re missing a few chapters, like you’re expected to already know all the characters. I know it’s book 2 in a series, but the book is described as a standalone, which it really isn’t. Anyway, a lot of trauma, but I ended up not caring much about it because there’s no build-up to it. We don’t get the time to know and understand the MCs, and therefore there’s no emotional connection. There’s very little info given about one of the MCs, Cal, at all.

This really should’ve been a home run for me, but sometimes you read something that just doesn’t work, and that’s okay. I enjoyed the writing itself and again, the dynamic between MCs was sweet.

There wasn’t any epilogue either, and the book ended with a chapter from an MC from the next book, which is such a pet peeve.

✨ARC REVIEW✨

This book gets extra points for the spicy times involving water magic. The MCs relationship was kinda cute, but it go on my nerves at times (maybe because I forgot the title had 'resistance' in it, and it's all about that 😂). We get more gang shenanigans and magical beings dynamics, more action, and a lot of intimate moments I liked. I'm not sure if I like the first couple or the second more (I just love Vin). But it was a good addition to the series and I am looking forward to the next book!

ARC from Booksirens, my own opinions and all that... Ya'know what I mean.

Cal’s hand, which was still tangled in his hair, moved and strong fingers massaged his scalp, making him want to purr. He was a wolf, dammit. He didn’t fucking purr.

I knew I was gonna love Luca’s story after reading His Mate By Vengeance. Loads of hurt/comfort, protectiveness, a dominant witch, wolf instincts, a prickly shifter and his flirty mate.

“Mmmm. Good boy. You want me to mark you up so everyone at your packhouse knows you’re mine?”

I loved the tension, them being enemies but also feeling that unstoppable bond forming between them. Luca’s wolf just wanting to scent and mark up his mate, Cal being protective and caring and so swoony.
The spice was fun and sexy, with a sprinkle of kinky and magic.
I had a blast with these two but I’m extremely excited for the next one — an arranged marriage between enemies. Can I have that now, please?

“I don’t need a mating bond to love you, Luca.”

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Enemies to lovers
- Wolf shifter vs witch
- Fake relationship
- Fated mates
- Violence
- References to past child assault & neglect
- References to past forced mating/rape
- MC w/ panic attacks
- Touch aversion except from his mate
- Possessiveness
- Scenting & biting
- Vers MCs
- Flip-fuck scene
- Knotting
- Temperature sensory play
- Daddy kink

Rated for 4 since Luca had some great character development. This wasn’t my absolute favourite but since the series started off with the best couple with all the cliche tropes that I love, I don’t think the rest can rise up to that level. Cal and Luca were okay. I felt that the story focused more on the catching the bad guys plot rather than the romance. Their romance felt sudden and I wasn’t a fan of that. Also Gio and Ethan? Would’ve loved to read their story if not for that heartbreaking ending 😭💔 Wishing for more Vin in future stories 😬🤞🏻♥️

my only complaint about book one was that it was too short. i am very glad about this length, actually.

i loved the characters and how they fell in love. how they could lean on each other.
thought i’d miss the rest of the family, but i didn’t because i loved these two so much.

i am so excited for the next one. i want LOTS of fighting

i read an arc and this is my honest opinion

This series just keeps on getting better and better.

This book had me hooked from page 1. I don't know if it's just this author that is doing it for me or the way their storytelling is a literal guilty pleasure but this book just got me excited to see more from this author.

“She doesn’t get to touch you,” he growled, loud enough for those outside to hear.

I can't with Luca. He is literally everything. Whenever he got overly possessive of Cal I wanted to squeal and shout 'YES' all the time. I enjoyed seeing how much growth he went through to the point of being the one to ask to be mated. It had me smiling so much, filling me with so much joy. I also loved the fact that he showed his vulnerability to Cal and trusted him enough to blow off some steam.

A touch to his jaw had Cal making him meet his eyes again. “You want to be good for me,” Cal said, faint surprise in his voice.

Oh my gosh, Cal. He really has that big 'package' energy. I found myself blushing one to many times because of this big flirt. Luca is lucky to have such a sweetheart. Cal is so patient with Luca and gives so much that even the strongest of heart would be melting because of him.

Overall, this has been a pleasure to read. It had just a bit of everything to keep one satisfied and ready for more. Can we talk about the water play? Because oh my goodness, that was HOT!!

I absolutely loved this book. It was wayyy better than the first ones (even though I love Vin and Angelo).
There was so much emotional depth in this book. I absolutely loved all the delicious vulnerability, the delightful feelings and passion Cal and Luca had, and all the hurt/comfort, which were my favorite parts about this book ❤️

Luca was a sweetheart through and through, even if he was a prickly one at that. The man has every right to be prickly and grumpy and angry at the world, yet he kept trying to be a good and sweet man beneath his facade. I adored him so much 🥹 He called to something in me, and that made him all the more precious ❤️
He was such a strong and lovable person, from the way he was so sensitive to everything around him at the beginning, to the way he confronted his fears… it was just beautiful to witness his journey 😍
He went from:

[…] His trust in you is going to freak him the fuck out. Don’t prove his fears right.”
“I would never hurt him,” Cal said.
“Your mere existence may break him,” Marco said.

To:

Rubbing his chest, he looked over at Cal standing next to him and smiled. That was his home right there. In the heart of his water wolf. He intended to spend the rest of his life curled up safe inside that den.

Isn’t that just beautiful? 🥹

And Cal… you perfect man 😩
Cal was everything a perfect mate/boyfriend should be. He is oh so sweet to Luca, so protective, dominant in a beautiful way, and very very supportive 🥹 Oh and let’s not forget all the sexiness 🤤 I AM FERAL FOR THAT MAN 🥵 I never knew that particular mix of supernatural was so sexy (no spoilers), but the way Cal’s magic was described made him so freaking HOT 🫠
Cal was very patient and understanding, his support never wavered even when he was afraid himself. He took everything in stride, even with his reluctance and refusal to the crime life, he did not once leave Luca alone ❤️

“Sometimes I find it hard to shift back,” he admitted.
“I’ll call you home if you get lost,” Cal promised, and Luca believed him.

“I don’t need a mating bond to love you, Luca.”

So beautiful, everything that man does is beautiful 🫠
The communication between them was just perfect 😍
I was kind of disappointed when I noticed that Marco doesn’t have a book (yet?). I wanted to read about since book 1, but honestly, the next book didn’t really call for me, so I think I’ll skip, maybe until the series is completed. Who knows 🤷‍♀️

I was lucky enough to beta this story and I loved it even more than the first one (which is saying a lot because I devoured the first one). The fake dating concept was awesome and I loved the reasoning for it! The author does such an amazing job with the lore in these stories. In this one we saw a different wolf story and the lore for a water witch. It was so neat to see his powers!

I have felt so bad for all of this author’s characters with their back stories and Luca and Cal were no exceptions! Both of their pasts really shaped how they are in the present and I loved seeing how supportive and wonderful Cal was with Luca. He always seemed to know what Luca needed (didn’t mean he always did and said the right thing but no one is perfect)!

Their HEA was perfect for them. No epilogue but I’ve found that we see the MCs in future books enough that I didn’t miss having no epilogue for book 1 as we saw Vin and Angelo enough in this book that I hope we see Cal and Luca a lot in book 3! We meet the MCs for book 3 and I am super intrigued by them and can’t wait to read the next book! Definitely recommend checking out this author!

I was pretty keen to read this after reading the first book in the series, and it was just what I was hoping for.

I found the romance very believable and enjoyed the push and pull between the MCs. Luca is reluctant to trust, understandably, and not willing to be mated to anyone after a traumatic experience. Cal is reluctant in theory, but comes around quickly shows himself to be stolid and dependable, determined to show Luca he cares.

The magic in this is pretty cool, and I felt the plot and action were more complete and well-rounded than in the first book. I think the author is getting into their stride with it.

Again, it's slightly too much instalust for it to be a real standout, but I did enjoy this a lot and am looking forward to the next book's release.

Yup, in all honesty loved this more than the first book, probably because it was longer and the story felt deeper (or I was more connected) the spice was SPICY but also watery…
and Cal! need I say more!!!
Their storyline is so cute, i’m obsessed with them!!! Cant wait to read moreeee from Ms Mel.
It would be a 5 if I was more into Fantasy/Supernatural but even though I am not it was still enjoyable!

Pretty sure I'm addictive to this series, Luca and Cal were two cuties but sexy little pies.

“What I want is to be close to you. To feed you and make you smile. To touch you when you want to be touched and to hold you when it all becomes too much. To make sure you know just how perfect you are. My good boy,” Cal said, pressing kisses to his shoulder through his shirt.

His Mate By Resistance is the second book in the Lunetti Pack series. This book can be read as a standalone but I feel it is better after reading His Mate By Vengeance the first book in the series. This is Luca a wolf shifter and Cal a water witch. I couldn't put this book down once I started it, I had to see what was coming next. I loved all the main and side characters. I really enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Luca and Cal. I loved that this book was longer than the first one also. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

A nice sequel to the series.

It’s cheesy, cliché fated mates in the mafia. It’s formulaic, but kinda addicting. I enjoyed this duo and how they healed from past traumas, and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Healing from SA past. Minor daddy kink.

I was blessed to read an Advanced Reader Copy of His Mate By Resistance.

Let me start off by saying I did not read book 1 before reading this ARC. I would recommend reading book 1 first because there were several things that I didn't understand in book 2 that related to book 1. This was supposed to be a standalone, but I'm not sure it quite succeeded on that.

Anyway, this book focuses on Luca, the Lunetti Pack's hacker, and Cal, the water witch that owns Hex-Rated, the hottest night club in the neutral zone. Someone is out to kill Luca for what he knows, and the top suspects are pack related. The pack alpha is fit to be tied trying to protect its heart, Luca, and so he devises a plan to keep him in the next safest place: the neutral zone with Cal. While neither Luca nor Cal are pleased with the arrangement, they are forced to quickly develop a deep trust in one another. With an undercurrent of attraction, it should be easy. But Luca's past makes him keep Cal at arm's length, and Cal's aversion to getting involved in pack business makes the growing bond between them complicated. Everything comes to a head when Luca's worst fears are realized and he finds out that the person closest to him is the traitor. And he and Cal must team up to expose them or risk losing everything they're trying to build together.

I really liked this book. It has lots of great banter and kept me guessing about who was behind the assassination attempts. While I did kind of guess who the traitor would be, I wasn't entirely sure. So I can say it kept me guessing. I liked the world building and how the three crime factions worked around each other. I loved how supportive Luca's pack was, and I loved that Cal was exactly what he needed. I loved Aria and her protective nature. It was cute to see her spar with Cal, especially as it became clear Luca and Cal belonged together.

The spice in this book was so hot. The use of magic in the bedroom was so creative and it made me all hot and bothered. I loved learning about Luca's background and his history and how Cal was a balm to the hurts and the motivation to surpass them. I thought they worked really well together, and I loved that Cal never hesitated to protect Luca, even when Luca didn't want him to. I loved that Cal was able to fix Luca's shifting issue and that he never pressured Luca for anything he wasn't willing to give.

Now on to some things I didn't like so much. I've learned I'm not a fan of the daddy/boy dynamic. While I liked that Cal called Luca "good boy," the "daddy" response was an ick for me. I disliked how quickly this book's events took place. This was supposed to be a fake dating book, but there wasnt enough time for anyone to see them fake dating or to lean into the fake dating dynamics. It took place over like a week, maybe. And in general that's fine, but the trauma Luca was supposed to overcome surrounding sex and mating seemed to happen way too fast. I wanted pining and uncertainty surrounding their relationship. Instead they almost immediately jumped into bed even though Luca had been too afraid to trust anyone like that for over 10 years. Then there's the whole saving Cal's life thing. That happened on like day 2 or 3, and Cal wasn't mad about it at all. That seemed out of character for him, honestly. He should have been furious. Maybe if it had happened later it would have worked better, but he was too calm and accepting about it. And THEN Luca was just suddenly ready to mate at the end. After one week. It just seemed so out of character for him. I know the romance part is all about the trust, but I just feel that the timeline should have been extended. It would have made more sense and kept me on board

I also felt that there wasn't a whole lot that actually happened. Luca almost got shot every time he left the bar, but the end action scene didn't have enough of a buildup for me. I think we needed more of an explanation of why things were happening. I'm still not clear why Luca was targeted. And did Ethan die? I don't know. I think there were some missed opportunities. Also that last spicy scene threw me for a loop. The acrobatics necessary to pull that off just didn't quite make sense.

Overall I did like this book, though. I love wolf shifters and a good mafia angle. I liked the use of magic and was happy to see Luca and Cal find each other. I really liked the setup for the next book. I can't wait to read it. Overall I rate this book 3 5/5 🌟.

Luca is a genius hacker and member of the Lunnetti Pack, one of three supernatural crime families living in New Trinity city. Cal is a powerful water witch and owner of Hex-Rated, a club in the heart of New Trinity and he does his best to avoid any of the supernatural families. After multiple attempts on Luca’s life, it is agreed that Luca will stay with Cal and to sell this they will need to fake being in a relationship.

Fake dating is liking catnip to me and this book did not disappoint. I really love the banter that Aitchess fills her books with and the clever world-building means that all of the interpersonal relationships are so incredibly believable. Cal and Luca are immediately attracted to one another which I would say isn’t generally my cup of tea however the combination of clearly established lore around mating bonds and the fact that instalust isn’t being used as a sort of cheat code so time is still spent developing the foundation of mutual respect that is necessary for a healthy relationship means that I was so on-board for this couple.

This book deals with some challenging topics including parental loss, drug addiction, grooming, and coercive controlling relationships. Whilst there is always an element of the dark side of things in a mafia romance, these topics could be particularly triggering for some readers. Whilst these elements are core to who the characters are in the present, only enough time is spent on them to establish their impact and move the characters along their paths to healing.

One tiny (and way tiny, I mean it was literally one scene) thing that didn’t work for me was when one of the characters woke up to receiving oral. This is something that makes me really uncomfortable and was made more so by the fact that there had not been any prior conversation about establishing consent (although I know from experience that even if this is present, I do not enjoy such scenes). The scene was very much consensual between participants. Obviously this is a very subjective thing and different things will make different readers uncomfortable.

This was an overall excellent book but I think one of the strongest aspects, beyond the top tier romance, was the way that the lore of the world that these books existed within was deepened. There was one particular moment that I was initially surprised by and then I remembered it is a common feature in more traditional lore around a certain supernatural creature. I also think it was interesting to see a different couple’s approach to the mate bonds. Speaking of other couples, I have two things to say: firstly, fans of Angelo and Vin will be glad to know that we get a healthy dose of both in this book; secondly, are rooftops going to be ✨a thing✨ in this series? Not complaining, just wondering?

I can’t wait to continue this series!

outstanding storytelling

Rating: 4.75🌈

There’s certain books and series that just so grab your attention that they make you think why haven’t you been reading this author all along? Especially when it’s a trope that’s a common must have for you.

That’s what comes to mind when reading Mel Aitchess’ Lunetti Pack series, a paranormal fated mate crime family romance series. That’s a bunch of elements and tropes that just ticks all my boxes, narratively speaking. And the author does it outstandingly.

Now on book two and Aitchess’ series gives us the hugely broken brother of the criminal Lunetti pack, brother to the Alpha and its IT hacker.

There’s basically three crime families that run the city. One’s a vampire clan, one’s all witches, and lastly, there’s the Wolf pack, the Lunettis. The author gives the reader a beautiful map in the beginning to help establish the territories and city’s layout in our minds. It’s needed because one of the series storylines is a murderous mystery and suspense driven plot of an anonymous character/group trying to drive a wedge between the three factions. That’s a great story as a foundation for all the other plotting and elements to overlay.

Because prior we’ve known that Luca has a tragic, traumatic past that has made the pack overly protective and turned him into an angry, solitary being. Scenes from the first book are now seen from his perspective and with more knowledge than we had previously. It builds a compelling narrative and complicated character.

Adding to this is another great character, that of the previously neutral water witch, Cal, who owns the hot night club, Hex Rated, we saw too in His Mate By Vengeance #1 . Cal and his club get fully fleshed out into his amazing water witch personality, complete with his water powers explored. Then it’s taken up a notch.

Aitchess is weaving a brutal tale about two men with damaged pasts, in terrifying situations, under horrific strain and they still build a relationship, while not wanting to immediately accept what’s apparent. There’s rightfully trigger warnings for violence among other things.

There’s magic, brutality, crime, family, betrayal, fated mates, everything you would expect from a paranormal mafia romance, but more, complex, and the situation is ongoing into the future stories. I’m beyond frustrated I have to wait because I’m so addicted to this universe and characters.

The next book promises to be even more epic and dangerously exciting. Looks like several rereads in my future before then.

Both books, to be read in order, are highly recommended. A must read each.

I LOVED IT!!! This was an excellent story with superb writing. It brought all the emotions, great tension, fantastic angst, along with a suspenseful plot where I was on the edge of my seat. For as much as I wanted Luca and Cal to finally confess their feelings towards one another, I also never wanted this story to end.

Luca's life is in danger and while he's a shifter with a long life and amazing healing powers, there are still ways to end his life. While he helps look for a traitor within his own pack, his Alpha feels Luca would be safer living in neutral territory, which introduces him to a witch named Cal.. Tamping down the hurt of being sent away, is one thing, another is fighting the attraction to the owner of the nightclub where he's sent to live. Luca doesn't have time to be attracted to anyone, much less someone who isn't a shifter, but even more than that, Luca refuses to ever be intimate with anyone ever again. Luca's pain is felt so heavily throughout this book, but so is his attraction to the enigmatic witch. He fights it tooth and nail, but he also can't help the pull he feels. I felt for Luca, but also couldn't wait for him to heal and release his pain. Cal was just what he never knew he needed.

Cal is a water witch and every moment spent in his presence you feel that magic. The blue glow, the water flowing, or the elemental property used in some way that has meaning or purpose and it's amazing how effortlessly it just flowed into everything. It was the same for Luca and his wolf like characteristics. Whether it was his need to scent-mark Cal or the overwhelming need for his pack and mate. Luca may have tried to resist a lot of his instincts, but he is a wolf at his core. I loved how both of their characteristics were so beautifully written into the story that it just became part of the story. I will say again, fantastic writing.

For Luca and Cal, their love was tangible. For instance, the scent-marking scenes were so realistic that I could touch and smell those intimate scenes. I could vividly see everything and feel the raw emotions from both characters, my heart would race and I constantly felt like I could reach out and touch this world which made leaving it nearly impossible. I'm so excited I've discovered Mel Aitchess as I can't wait to return and read more books by her.

I read the first in this series (His Mate by Vengeance) a month or so ago and I felt pretty meh about it. I decided at that time not to continue with the series even though I was interested in the character I knew this next book was about. I was encouraged to try again by someone who said that they felt the author improves as each of these books comes out and that, while the first was kind of iffy, the next ones are much better. I'm glad I listened and gave this one a shot.

I adore prickly black cat characters and Luca is prime black cat. He's been hurt, he's defensive, he hates that his family sees him as weak or in need of protection, and he's overall a prickly little porcupine. Cal is absolutely the perfect match for him in every way. He's patient, he's insightful, and he's endlessly respectful of Luca's privacy and agency. He sees Luca's strengths and, while he protects him, he does not coddle him or make him feel lesser in the way Luca's family inadvertently does. I also LOVED that they didn't even get remotely sexual until maybe 60% in but before that Cal was already calling Luca "baby", showering him with praise, snuggling him, and giving those sweet sweet forehead kisses and Luca was over there marking him up whenever he could.

To me, the relationship was fairly perfect and these guys were absolutely made for each other. I also appreciated the pack dynamics and the little supernatural politics involved. I do wish there had been a little more depth to Cal's relationships with his staff (although I appreciate the author making sure we knew he treated them right and that he took in those who, like him, were on the outside of the major crime families in the city). I also think the betrayal plot was kind of shallow. So, basically, the parts outside of the relationship weren't the strongest but I loved these two together so much that it was still such a solid read. I'll definitely continue with the series now.

Side note: one of the things that put me off in the first book was that one of the MCs had a prior sexual relationship with the other MC's Alpha which gave me the ick. The author spent time making sure we knew the vampire MC had been pretty promiscuous prior to getting together with the LI but that seemed unnecessary to me. I am one of those who wants their MCs to be exclusive and not have a lot of other person drama, cheating, sharing, or over saturation of information regarding their past hookups/relationships. I know that's a me thing but I think that's a big part of why the first one did not work for me. This one, however, was 100% safe for me and had the kind of obsession/possession that I adore.

Without a word, Luca flipped back the covers next to him, leaving the sheet exposed, and then turned his back as if he hadn’t just rocked Cal’s whole understanding of their dynamic with his clear invitation. “Luca…” “Don’t overthink it. I’m not offering anything else and we will never speak of this again. I just … need,” Luca whispered.

“So, now you know why I’m so fucking weak and broken,” he said. “No, baby. Now I know just how fucking strong you are and just how precious this connection between us is.” “Even if I can never let the bond form?” Luca asked. “I don’t need a mating bond to love you, Luca.”

SA/rape: Luca was raped by his ex continuously over a couple week period when he was younger made possible by a forced bond. Nothing on page, no specifics.
Other person drama: Luca's ex is the reason he has such trust issues and is mentioned. Cal is mentioned as having hooked up a lot but once they meet there are no others at all. Cal also has an ex that makes a brief appearance but it's unwanted.

**I received an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, BookSirens and the author, for the opportunity.

What to expect:
📍Versatile couple
📍Fated mates
📍Insta-lust
📍Possessiveness
📍Touch him and die
📍Morally grey characters
📍Enemies to lovers
📍High tension
📍Hurt/comfort
📍Forced proximity
📍Daddy kink
📍Praise kink
📍Magic during sex

I was lucky enough to read the ARC of the first book in this series and loved it. Now, with the second book, the author has once again proven to me that her style is exactly what I like. I love her characters with complex moral codes and flaws that make them more human. And the dynamics of her couples? Amazing, all different, but somehow she manages to break stereotypes in the genre and I always like that.

Although this story grabbed me and I fell in love with these characters, I have to admit that it won't be my favorite of the series. At least the first book, although much shorter, surpasses it by far.

My biggest problem was with the action scenes. I understand that it must be hard to write a violent plot with creatures with magical powers, but in this book the action just dragged down the pace of the plot. Too many near-death moments for the main characters. The first few were dramatic enough to make me feel upset and suffer through them. But they kept happening and it was the same formula over and over again. I found it a bit clunky and boring by the end. It took the excitement out of it. It's fine that the main characters take time to resolve conflicts, but if they're so smart and powerful, how do they fall into the same trap so many times? I don't know, I think that was a big flaw. At least for me, who really enjoys the nuances of a good plot and the little details.

If it's the romance you're interested in then no problem because it was spectacular. The tension built slowly and the sexy scenes were amazing. The touch of magic in those moments was just what was needed to make it spicy!

All in all, a good read that left me intrigued for upcoming books in the series.

HIS MATE BY RESISTANCE is the second book in the Lunetti Pack series, although I haven't read book one and found this one could be read as a standalone.

Luca has found or seen something that could get him killed... but he has no idea what. He is the Pack's hacker, with his fingers in many pies, so finding out why someone is trying to kill him is harder than it should be. Add the fact that it's clearly someone from the upper echelons of the Pack and it gets more complicated than he would like. His Pack also treats him as though he is made of glass, which frustrates him, and leads to the situation with Cal he finds himself in.

Cal is a Water Witch of the hottest club around - Hex-Rated. He is fighting for his independent stance, away from the witches, wolves, and vampires. However, he has agreed to let Luca stay with him, due to the strength of his wards. He doesn't count on the instant reaction to Cal though!

This was such a great read. I was ensnared by the story and the developing relationship between Cal and Luca. While there were some heavy moments, there were also light-hearted ones. I loved the relationship between Aria and Cal at the beginning, and how it morphed into something opposite. The Pack also realised, with a little help from Cal, just how much they were hurting Luca in their attempts to protect him.

While Daddy and boy are mentioned, it doesn't really go into detail about that type of relationship and, to be honest, I don't think it needed it. Their times together were hot and spicy enough. If that was explored in a different story though, I wouldn't mind!

While I love paranormal books, I don't usually do Mafia-related books. This author has changed my mind and I look forward to continuing with the rest of this series. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me.

Danger, recovery, and an unexpected attraction are the themes of His Mate By Resistance, a riveting and emotionally charged story. When his life is in danger, Luca—a strong shifter with healing abilities and a long lifespan—finds himself in a dangerous scenario. Because of his talents, Luca is still vulnerable to harm. After he assists in exposing a betrayer inside his own pack, his Alpha determines that he shall live on neutral ground to ensure his safety. The decision causes Luca pain and bewilderment, and the fact that he is transferred to live with Cal—a mysterious water witch and nightclub owner—only adds to the chaos. As if the decision of his Alpha and the anguish of separation from his pack weren't difficult enough, Luca now faces an even greater challenge: his increasing desire to Cal. Luca claims he will never have an intimate relationship again because of his traumatic history, but there's no denying the bond he shares with Cal. Although he tries to control his emotions and instincts, Luca can't help but be captivated by Cal, whose enchanting and serene presence appears to mend the very pieces of Luca that are damaged. The plot is enhanced with a lovely and mystical touch by Cal, a water witch, who possesses magical abilities. The ethereal blue light and rippling currents of water magic enhance the setting, while Cal's deft command of it stands in stark contrast to Luca's feral wolf instincts. An intriguing dynamic emerges as Luca struggles to control his impulses while also feeling an irresistible attraction to Cal. While the relationship between Luca and Cal develops throughout the novel, the emotional scars he has sustained become increasingly crucial to his recovery. Cal turns out to be the one thing Luca needed all along, and their path together is one of healing, acceptance, and self-discovery. The narrative is captivated by their gentle, intense, and exquisitely interwoven connection, which makes it a story of love, grief, and transformation.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

No mate for wolf shifter Luca, it’s way too intrusive.
Luca is a hacker and a cousin of the pack leader, Marco.
Because of his work, someone is after him, trying to kill him.

Marco decides Lucas has to go to a safe place, the house of Calder the water witch, who will keep him safe. The pack is extremely protective of Luca. Even though he feels hugely suffocated by them, he also feels abandoned.

There is a fact you have to know about Luca, he has been through awful things and is traumatized, which made him hate ever having a mate, and mistrust his wolf, so their connection is far from ideal. Cal can never find out!

Cal is a water witch, owner of a club, trying to stay on the legal side, having an attractive wolf shifter in his house who’s off limits, is a challenge, even more he’s coming from a criminal pack. Little does he know!

Luca is attracted to but also hostile to Cal. Cal? Dang, he’s super protective over Luca without being suffocating! It took some time but finally, Luca trusted Cal and gave over the reins, what a sight!
Still, Luca is the target and the ones who want him dead are serious about it, and Cal has his own problems.

I don’t want to spoil the important things, believe me when I say it’s all intriguing and exciting!
There are spells, healing forces, and action, and enough is going on with both main characters to make it an enjoyable and entertaining experience!

I loved this story, and loved the characters, Cal and Luca were great together, their dynamic was amazing!
The world the author created was wonderful, I’m a sucker for scents, the awareness of scents, and scent markings, I devoured and enjoyed it all very much!
Overall, it is an excellently written PNR fantasy story about packs, attacks, found family, hurt comfort, mating, and strong and arousing magic!

4.5☆

This was such a great continuation of this series! I think I wanted book 1 to be longer, but this one was the perfect length and I really enjoyed it. We get to see all of the characters from book 1 and we get to meet new ones as well. There is an overarching plot, but I also feel like it can be read as a standalone.

Luca is a wolf shifter hacker who is being targeted and they don't know who is behind the attempts on his life and the traitor seems to be someone from the pack. Calder is a water witch who gets roped into playing his fake boyfriend and has him move into his penthouse to keep him safe. What I really love in shifter romances is that we have the inner wolf in this case immediately knowing that Cal is his mate and acting accordingly when Luca doesn't realize. Luca knows, but tries to hide the fact the Cal is his mate, because in his youth he had a situation happen to him that makes him wary of listening to his wolf going as far as to avoid shifting.
Cal is very dominant and alpha and while Luca tries not to submit to him he still loves the fact that Cal takes care of him, but doesn't coddle him like his family.
I really enjoyed the tension and back and forth between Cal and Luca. I loved the little mating behaviors they were exhibiting that they tried to disregard. I also really loved how Cal's water witch powers came into play during spicy scenes. That was something new for me and I absolutely loved it.
I also enjoyed how much of a caretake Cal is, and not just with Luca but with everyone in his life. I loved how so in sync they were with each other even without the mating bond between them.

In the end they both acknowledged the mate bond and Cal also got a family in the form of the Lunetti pack, which was great because he always wanted a family to beling to.

I'm excited to continue the series and see all of these characters again.

Very much enjoyed this book. I have to admit that going in, I already knew I loved the world that was built for this series--a triad of semi-opposing paranormal factions with none of the humans in the know? Here for it.

The background plot (read: not the romance) was interesting and kept me turning pages. I wish the witch MC didn't feel so flat to me, but that's kind of expected with not having a POV from within (perhaps that'll change in a future book ).

Luca was every bit as complicated as I wanted him to be. Getting to see all of his facets was a joy (and also heartbreaking, but that was expected). The dynamic between him and his pack was just as compelling to discover as the one between him and Cal.

As for the water witch himself? I have mixed feelings. When he was good, he was very very good (and I don't mean morally, I mean.. I don't know what I mean. Personality? Maybe it'll make sense with my next few sentences). Characters are flawed and I get that. Perhaps the problem was that I went into this expecting a Daddy/boy relationship (the back cover copy doesn't explicitly claim that. Did I read something else somewhere? Was it just the quote about "his boy" and the phrase "water witch Daddy" at the end? Could be.

Please note, this not a criticism of the writing, author, or book at all--but my reaction to a character based on personal bias. In the end I still absolutely loved Luca and Cal together.

That said, I truly did love this book. My (possibly unrealistic) expectations aside, I have zero complaints and cannot wait for the next book in the series. I know these will be frequent re-reads for me.

His Mate By Resistance is a tense, emotional tale of danger, healing, and unexpected attraction Luca, a powerful shifter with long life and healing abilities, finds himself in a perilous situation when his life is threatened. Despite his abilities, there are still ways to kill him, and as he helps uncover a traitor in his own pack, his Alpha decides that for his safety, Luca should leave the pack's territory and live in neutral ground. This decision stirs up hurt and confusion in Luca, especially as he’s sent to live with Cal, an enigmatic water witch who owns a nightclub.
While Luca’s heart and mind are torn by his Alpha’s decision and the pain of being separated from his pack, he faces an even more intense challenge: his growing attraction to Cal. Luca is adamant that he will never be intimate with anyone again due to past trauma, but his connection with Cal is undeniable. Despite fighting his feelings and pushing away his instincts, Luca is deeply drawn to Cal, whose calm, magical presence seems to heal the very parts of Luca that are broken.
Cal, a water witch, adds a beautiful and magical layer to the story with his elemental powers. The vivid imagery of water magic, with its flowing currents and blue glow, enriches the atmosphere, and Cal’s effortless control over it contrasts with Luca’s primal wolf nature. The tension between Luca’s resistance to his instincts and his undeniable pull toward Cal creates a compelling dynamic.
As the story progresses, the healing of Luca’s emotional wounds becomes just as important as the growing bond between him and Cal. Luca’s journey is one of self-discovery, acceptance, and ultimately, healing, while Cal proves to be exactly what Luca never knew he needed. Their connection is tender, intense, and beautifully woven into the narrative, making it a captivating story of love, pain, and transformation.

Luca & Cal
Rating: 3.7 ⭐

- Paranormal
- Fated Mates
- Forced Proximity
- Knotting
- Wolf Shifter/Water Witch
- Enemies-to-Lovers
- Fake Relationship
- Hacker/Bar Owner
- Mafia Families
- Mystery
- Magic Sensory Play

This is the second book in the series were we get to see Luca and his backstory. While these books can be read as a standalone, I don't recommend that because they are continuations of the previous books and you could feel like you're missing important backstories. There is an interconnected threat throughout the series as well.

Luca endured trauma when he was a teen, becoming an adult, and it has shaped his adulthood and how he views mating's. While he is trying to find the traitor and stay alive from the threats on his person, he begrudgingly needs a hiding spot. The pack arranges for Luca to stay with Cal at his bar and pretend to be dating. Neither one is happy about this arrangement, until they meet of course. Surprise surprise when Cal turns out to be Luca's mate!

4.5 - This is the second book in the Lunetti Pack series and I loved it! I have very much enjoyed both books in this series thus far and am already excited for the next one.

This is Luca's story - he is one of the "heart"s of the pack and much loved by all. He is also a hacker and given the trauma he went through as a teenager, his main role in the pack is cyber security/tech stuff only, no weapons. However, he is being targeted by a terrorist organization/assassins who want him dead. Obviously his pack wants him to live, so Vin (the vampire assassin from the first book and now Angelo's mate and fellow pack member) has arranged for Luca to reside at a local gay dance club (considered neutral territory) owned by a water witch named Cal who will play the role of Luca's fake boyfriend.

There is a lot that happens as the Lunetti pack tracks down Luca's would-be assassins as well as a traitor within the pack. I love all the action and intrigue and goings-on! So exciting! And throughout it all, Luca and Cal slowly discover that they are indeed fated mates. Even before those words are uttered, they exhibit all kinds of mating behavior and much of it is very sexy (Cal brings his A game with his water witch abilities! FIRE). I love how Cal is so dominant and such a wonderful caretaker for Luca - there is definitely hurt/comfort here and it is done so well. Luca - despite himself - is such a good boy for Cal and together they are just...well, magical, haha.

You will definitely want to read this series! While this is a standalone technically, there are ongoing plot lines and recurring characters that are best enjoyed from the beginning and in order. There is also a bonus novella, so don't miss that, either :) I cannot wait for the next in the series!

Luca is a valued hacker for his mafia pack, but also does some secret stuff on the side to help others. He has a target on his back and needs a safe place to hide out and use his skills to find the traitor. He also needs a cover story.
Cal is a powerful water witch who has worked hard to keep on the right side of the law. A favour for a friend - Vin from book one - has him faking a relationship and giving Luca a safe place to work.

Both Luca and Cal feel an instant attraction, but circumstances and past trauma has them trying to fight it. The more time the spend together, the more they discover just how right they are for one another. Cal has the patience needed for Luca to feel safe, while they both do things that prove how trustworthy they are for one another. The trust and love that grows between them is a beautiful thing to witness, and their steamy sexy times are so hot. There is danger and violence stalking them - more than once - so it's a good thing they can rely on one another.

There are a lot of powerful emotions throughout this book, but when a devastating betrayal is discovered, the heartbreak is overwhelming.
This book is so engaging and entertaining that is grabs your attention right from page one and doesn't let go until the end. It leaves you wanting more as the overarching storyline has yet to be resolved, and the very end gives you a glimpse into what to expect in the next book of the series. The MC's are wonderful and compatable, the secondary characters add so much depth to the storyline, and the writing itself is such that you feel part of the story.
I would definitely recommend this book, this series, and this author.

My review for this ARC is unbiased and completely my own honest opinion.

Independent reviewer for GRR, I was gifted my copy of this book.

This is book 2 in the Lunetti Pack series, and you really SHOULD read book one, His Mate By Vengeance, before this one. There is much that happens in that book that you need for this one. And Vin and his Angel play a big part here too, so it helps to know their story. There is also a little overlap in the timeline.

I really enjoyed book one, but I LOVED this one!

While Vin and Angelo get down and dirty quickly, it takes time for Luca and Cal to give in to the growing attraction and feelings. Neither wanted to be holed up, but someone is trying to kill Luca and Cal needs to keep his boy safe.

And that, peeps, is what I loved best. Cal saw Luca as HIS a long time before he admitted it to himself, let alone Luca. Luca kept telling Cal, "Not a boy" but he only had to ask Cal to stop, and he would have. The power balance for these two was perfect, and I loved how it just developed as it went along.

I loved the descriptions of Cal's magic and what he could do with it! He used to soothe Luca, and to tease him. He used it to keep Luca safe and to kill. Again, some violence is on page, and some graphic, but it's needed I think.

I didn't see who the betrayer was, until it was revealed in the book, so well played! I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book, given what happens at the end of this one!

There are a couple of shorts to this series, I might see if I can find time to read them.

Loved this one, so. . . . . .
