I am a 7th and 8th grade librarian who has a dear friend who provides us with Native American books and books with Native American authors. She was so excited to get this book to me as the author is the son of her close friend and is also a proud member of the Cherokee Nation Tribe. This genre is not normally what I would choose on my own but I was blown away. I enjoyed the point of view change each chapter. I was able to be transported to the world of pirates and I could see the similarities of the treatment of the clan people and of our fellow tribe members. Thank you for writing a book that made me want to keep flipping pages to see what would happen next. Can’t wait to read your next book.
This historical fantasy novel is the first in The Cannon Fire Plot series. After the recently deceased Grand Captain Mathias Battier’s wife and five children are accused of treason their lives will never be the same. Their father left behind secrets they must all face now. Follow along as they discover the true oppression of their society and its rulers and watch as each of their paths take them all on incredible epic adventures, rebellion, and testing each of their mettle.
I loved the alternating POVs and the pacing of this story. It can be hard to become invested in a cast of characters when POV switches but this was done so well and each character feels very 3 dimensional and had me emotionally attached.
If you want an epic adventure with rebellions fighting injustice, pirates, and a diverse cast of characters then make sure to add this one to your list. I will eagerly be awaiting the next installment.
It’s didn’t take long for me to be hooked with this book. I enjoyed reading from each sibling’s POV the journey they’re on and am very much looking forward to see where the next book takes this story. I would definitely recommend diving into this book.
Excellent! I need a sequel/continuation of the story ASAP. Isla and Caldwell were my two favorite siblings; Xavier is a butthead of an older brother in the most believable way.
In The Wages of Kin by C.J. Caughman, readers are introduced to Adelaide Battier, a widow left in the wake of her revered naval officer husband's untimely demise. Suddenly, she is catapulted into a labyrinth of peril and conspiracy, with The Assembly—a formidable group with veiled intentions—at its center. As Adelaide delves deeper, she unravels the intricacies of the Cannon Fire Plot, a subversive plan conceived by her late husband intended to upend societal norms. With her and her children's lives on the line, being ensnared in the aftermath of her husband's controversial actions presents a palpable threat.
Set against a backdrop evoking the Colonial era, The Wages of Kin masterfully skirts the borders of genres. It's not merely historical fiction; Caughman's crafted world is peppered with elements of fantasy, action-adventure, and even echoes of seafaring tales reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson's masterpieces like Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
The heart of this novel lies in Adelaide Battier's unyielding spirit and profound love for her children. As the layers of her husband's secrets unfold, it becomes evident that his choices, however clandestine, were grounded in nobility.
