An innocent walk through the woods turns sinister when Albert and Rex hear a cry for help. A desperate woman is trapped the wrong side of a high fence ... and she is being pursued.
What follows is a situation more deadly than any they have faced before.
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
ALWAYS 5 Stars for Albert & Rex! Only because 5 is all there is! While I like Mr. Higgs' other series, I LOVE Albert & Rex! Maybe because I have a heart for the elderly? Maybe because I love dogs? Both? Maybe because I'd love to traipse around the world like them? Yeah but without the crime! This story's location was special to me because my ex-was in the American Army & I spent two tours in Germany with him.
As usual, Mr. Higgs combines a bit of suspense with a good bit of humor. His characters could be your neighbor or best friend. At least the good guys could! 'Cause his bad guys are BAD!! I love that he changes locations in each book & I get to "see" places I will never see with my own eyes, & "meet" all kinds of people! I'm the sort for whom the characters become my friends! They're real to me. But mostly I love the relationship between Albert & Rex! The only thing missing is Albert being able to understand Rex, but I believe that would spoil the magic between them! Instead he allows US to understand Rex, & boy that dog can talk! He can think too, which is why he is such a smart partner for Albert. Between the two of them, the bad guys don't have a chance! Then, at the end is the cherry on top...a recipe known for the location of the story. IDK how far Albert & Rex will travel, but I hope it's at least 'til I catch up in age to Albert!! No, even longer! I gotta have my Albert & Rex fix every so often! 😁
This Steve Higgs series is one of my favorites. This one in the series was very welcome after a long absence of Rex & Albert in my life awaiting the book's release! The only thing it is missing, Steve, is what happened to Cerberus & Hades?
However that is not the important story here but of the challenges in the author's life with his four year old daughter Hermione. Hermione is autistic and refuses to eat. A severe vitamin deficiency led to blindness at 4 years old.
I am praying that the author reads this review and my note about looking into something called Tahitian Noni Juice that cannot only help mitigate the autism but repair her eyes along with giving her 250 micronutrients that will help her heal in many ways.
I pray with all of you for a miracle ... for Hermione's total healing and I ask this in Jesus's Holy name, King of the Universe. Amen!
Albert had a pre-arranged meetup with Roy and Beverly Hope, Albert's best friend and neighbors, in Germany, and while walking Rex after their long train ride, they come across a woman in much distress. Well of course, being the gentlemen they are, they couldn't just keep going, could they? Nope! What follows next is a tale of sculduggery of the worst kind, and Albert gets knee deep in it, along with Roy, and Rex, always Rex! I laughed so hard in places and was totally sucked into this story. It took less than 4 hours to read it. Higgs is definitely one of my all-time favorite authors! Humor, intrigue, and just all-around fun to read are what his books are.
I have been following Steve in not only his novels but his fight for his daughter's life and future. And I would like nothing more than to have "our" Secretary of Health, rfk jr, choke on his words about Autism. If you read Steve's books and his author's notes, you know he always fights for those in need of help. Maybe receiving our heartfelt opinion of rfk jr's decision to mock Autism, ending research on it, and hurting the brave families affected by it, will get his attention.
That being said, Steve again had me on the edge of my recliner as Albert and Rex faced his most dangerous foe yet.
I so enjoyed Albert and Rex's adventures in this 4th of the series. They meet up with Albert's neighbors Roy and Beverly in Germany where Roy had been deployed at the RAF base in the small German town of Hoffenholen. True to Albert's nature, he soon stumbled upon a very large conspiracy which included stripping people's identify and selling them to others. But, as always, Rex saves the day. It was a very thrilling read and I can't wait until #5 is released next year!
I’ve read many of the author’s series, but wasn’t interested in an English culinary tour. Knowing how much I enjoyed the author’s other works, I decided to give it a try. It’s become a favorite. For me, Rex is what puts it over the others. I love reading Rex’s point of view. I’m saddened to learn that the series is coming to an end.
Wow! Things were crazily intense! When a trip down memory lane morphs into a rescue mission, Albert, Rex and Albert's friends have their hands full. The problem is, the people after the woman they rescued aren't playing around and they have alot of power. I can safely say that this is the most intense story in the series thus far! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
Absolutely love these books can't wait for the next one. I hope there are plenty more to come. It funny and exciting to read. I am not a big reader I don't normally read I wait for the movie to come out, but I can not put these books down love the plots and the characters especially Rex.
Ostensibly a cosy, localised, crime thriller featuring an old man and his dog on a holiday tour, the story rapidly develops into a timely, international major thriller with seventy-odd year olds acting like forty year olds, dogs communicating with each other and yet... it works! Genuine thrills and excitement in hard to put down action thriller.
this is a solid ten star. who ever said old people can’t do anything should follow Albert Smith.
Albert Smith is joining his best friend and friends wife for a vacation break. Roy and Beverly have been involved in Albert’s escapades in the past are behind his joining a young women being hunted by dogs and men on. Motorcycles.
Albert and Rex are up to their neck in this book. A sister trying to se her sibling, a cult where things are not quite as it appears on the surface. Albert’s friends mixed up in his adventure and Rex finding allies again with he’s wit and sarcasm. A book to enjoy to the end to see how the duo and his friends come out of this tangled web.
I thought that I had read this series and the last one was a bit "silly" but since I can't get the lates DD Black mystery, I figured out I had one more Albert Smith and Rex adventure. It made me giggle and smile. I guess I need to quit while he is still alive....
Even though I gave it 3 stars I sought out the book and enjoyed.
This book really keeps you on your toes. The details are amazing. You can tell the author had lived in Germany. It really added so much to the story. And his experience in the military. I couldn't this book down until I finished. Great job Steve! I have loved every book. Linda Orrs, Ogden, Utah, USA
Truly a 10 Star read. Pulse-pounding action highlights our favorite characters in this Best yet book of a fantastic series. You really don't want to miss this original, incredible novel. Outstanding. Highly Recommended.
An Edge of your Seat Action Mystery!!! Humor mixed with danger to our heroes!!! Seriously fabulous in so many ways!!! Can they unveil the evil hiding in plain sight? Best sword fight ever!!! Loved every word!!!!
You just can't put this story down until the end. But is it really the end? How can Albert and Rex not have a nice vacation without the extra drama that follows them. Who knows but that is the amazing world we get to share in their travels.
Love Rex, of course, and sharing his "take" on things. And Albert just has to get involved... And so it begins..I think each story is getting better and more exciting.
Unique and unexpected challenges for Albert and Rex
Meeting friends for travel in Germany, immediately leads them all to life threatening danger and one woman’s perilous rescue. From that time forward there seems to be no one to trust. Including the local police.
I have loved all of the books about Albert and Rex that Steve had just written. They are nice reads good characters. You feel good about the story well done and well worth reading the whole series. Can’t wait for the next book
A little slow at first, but then it gets better and better. I have finished all four of these books in the series. I understand the next one will not be out until May 2026. That means I have to wonder what happens to Albert keep writing Steve, you’re an awesome author.
I can't seem to put these nooks done once II start reading them. I've told several people about this series hoping they will also enjoy them. I really don't want this series to come to an end as I always look forward to the new t adventure 😊
Spoiler-now that I'm a woman in her 60s i I loved that Beverly wasn't portrayed as a whiny, controlling elderly wife🙂. I can't wait for each new Albert and Rex book, I think it is the best series Steve has, although I do enjoy the others. I just love Rex.
I don't normally write reviews, but I felt I had to for this book. I've read all of the Albert and Rex books, and I truly feel this one is the best (so far. One more to go!). I devoured this book in about 2 days, couldn't put it down.
