"I had faith in you until your obsession took over."
This is a book I've been looking forward to reading for a long time; the Maven Knight trilogy was one of my favourite indie book series (Matthew Romeo created in that series EVERYTHING that the Star Wars sequel trilogy could have been), so the news he was writing a prequel novel was music to my ears. The beta read of this story's earliest form was gripping enough, and having now read the finished work, I stand by my original assessment that this is Revenge of the Sith up to 11, a near Shakespearean tragedy where bonds of love and family are sundered by ambition, obsession, lust for power and the corruption of purpose into mania...
"Romulus, one of the Knights of the Remnant Order's shining stars, has it all; a loving wife, a newborn son and a purpose shaping the next generation of Knights to help chart Pan'gea's course. But beneath the seemingly perfect surface, cracks are forming. He's always known of his wife Dianna's belief in her own destiny to be the world's saviour, but paid it no mind. But when old rivals return and old jealousies boil to the surface, Dianna becomes ever more cruel and vindictive in her desire to hold onto her position, and as they drift further apart, he must decide what he's willing to sacrifice to keep his family safe..."
Romulus was a posthumous character in the main series, talked about in differing ways by others, so it was good to meet and get his own perspective about his reasons for taking the actions that would chart his son's course. Dianna's descent into righteous villainy, a brilliant example of showing how every villain is the hero of their own story, was both compelling and tragic to read (the final confrontation between her and Romulus was giving me such vibes of Anakin and Padme on Mustafar reversed, I was literally picturing Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen as Di and Rom in my head!), and the side characters were also well fleshed out and made compelling so you cared what became of them (Zakara, Felyx, Krissy and more). The political skulduggery and battle scenes were gorgeously written and so gripping, and some twists I didn't see coming... Long story short, if you enjoyed the Maven Knight trilogy or you're a fan of Star Wars or science fantasy fiction in general, this lavishly well-written story is a must read that will captivate, entertain and break your heart...
