The Hold of Destiny: A Maven Knight Story

Rate this book
For some, destiny is a warm embrace, but for others it is a stranglehold.

In the vast, sprawling continent of Pan’gea, a clandestine organization is rising to power. It is called the Remnant Order, a group dedicated to preserving order in a chaotic world. At the heart of the Remnant are a husband and wife, Romulus and Diánna.

Romulus is one of the Order's most steadfast champions, a paragon of fairness and stability. Diánna is the newly elected leader of the Remnant; a woman who built herself from the ground up. Their lives are seemingly perfect—a successful career, a newborn son, and a luxurious home. However, their work comes at a heavy price.

Diánna has been shown where her fate lies, and she will do all she can to bring about change in the New World. As assassination plots and political schisms threaten to tear the Remnant apart, Romulus and Diánna find themselves increasingly at odds with each other. Their once-unbreakable bond begins to fray under the pressure of their conflicting responsibilities. In a desperate attempt to save their family, the pair must decide how far they are willing to go. Will they choose to protect their son at the cost of their mission? Or will they sacrifice their family to fulfill their destiny?

As the lines between love, duty, and betrayal blur, Romulus and Diánna must confront the darkest corners of their souls. In the end, destiny may be a fickle thing.

Matthew Romeo is a warrior poet. He has a healthy obsession with Star Wars, the Stormlight Archive, Cobra Kai, and Halo. When it comes to his career as a writer, he's been inspired by the likes of Frank Herbert, Bandon Sanderson, and Pierce Brown. Pure chaos is the way of his writing style, often flitting between methodical outlining or just winging the story as he goes. He spends much of his free time playing Dungeons&Dragons, learning swordsmanship, practicing martial arts, and going clay shooting.

I have no words. Okay I have lots of words, I’m just in shock. I did not see that going the way it did. From the very beginning this story captivated me. I was invested in the characters and their development (though it admittedly did not go how I thought it would-in such a good way)!

It was easy to get swept up in this world and the descriptions made it feel like you were actually there. I seriously felt like this book was akin to the original Star Wars and I do not say that lightly.

The Hold of Destiny is the first book I've read by Matthew Romeo, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it captivated me. From the start, the story pulls the reader in, with richly detailed visuals that bring the world to life. The narrative is filled with action and mystery, offering an immersive experience with strong world-building that enhances the depth of the plot. Romeo's ability to create a vivid and engaging universe makes me eager to explore more of his work. This book is a must-read for fans of action-packed fantasy or sci-fi!

A beautifully crafted story of family, love, destiny, betrayal, and survival.

The world building in this book is truly incredible. I love how vivid the writing is, you truly feel as if you are there and can clearly picture everything. I also love how action packed the story is, how detailed the fight scenes are, and how there are alternating points of view. There are so many plot twists, which really added to the tension felt within the story, I honestly found myself completely shocked multiple times. The ending will definitely leave you wanting to read the rest of the books.

The relationship between Romulus and Dianna is complex and complicated, I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t say more than that, but I did find it interesting to see how their relationship changes throughout the course of the story. I found all of the characters to be really interesting and enjoyed learning about them.

This was the first book I have read by Matthew Romeo, and the first book I have read within the Maven Knight series, and I really enjoyed it. This book truly had me hooked from page one. If you are looking an epic well written sci-fi fantasy then definitely go read this book.

Looking for an action-packed sci-fi tragedy? The Hold of Destiny certainly fits the bill.

Those who’ve read Romeo’s Maven Knight series know he writes masterful action, and while it’s not necessary to read those in order to read Hold of Destiny, it certainly adds to the story’s effect since this is a prequel.

Instead of gushing about the intricate fight scenes, we’ll detail the characters. The heart of this tale is the fracturing of a loving relationship between Romulus and Díanna. Maven Knight readers familiar with the later iteration of Díanna/Centum likely wondered how such a thinly-veiled monster could’ve been loved by anyone other than fanatics, but this tale of her younger years with Romulus shows someone quite lovable despite her small flaws.

Small cracks often grow over time, and when a little help is involved, fractures spread rapidly. Díanna’s narcissistic traits blossom with the fervor of sunflowers at Three Mile Island when threats to her family and power appear. When Romulus has his own (physical) health concerns, it helps drive a wedge between them due to his desire for peace and the hold ‘destiny’ has over her proving most important. The fate of their infant son, Talír, further complicates things.

Political machinations abound, narcissism fueling paranoia, and zealous belief in prophecy fuel her crumbling into madness and tyranny, leaving Romulus to choose between his wife and his son’s safety.

All in all, a chilling example of how power corrupts and even someone good at heart can pave their road to hell with good intentions. It makes one wonder how many reviled real-world in history may have seen similar devolutions into madness with their ascents to power…

Highly recommended reading.

The Hold of Destiny by Matthew Romeo is a prequel book to the Maven Knight Chronicles. It was so unique and a great origin story! I haven't read the Maven Knight Chronicles, but now I have to!

The first unique aspect of this book is the POV switches between a husband and wife. They struggle with competing external and internal conflicts that stress their bonds. Starting with an assassination attempt for them and their newborn son, the stakes get more intense and more difficult for them to overcome. I loved both their views on how they process everything going on!

Plus! I can't forget to mention the awesome powers they harness in combat with different gems, such as emralds. This is a really cool system that you don't see very often!

Definitely add this to your 2025 reading list!

I want to start this review by saying, I don’t typically read this genre of books. However, I was captivated by the storyline. I genuinely appreciated the world building/character developments. I also did NOT expect the twist and turns of this book🤯 I was bamboozled😂

I plan to read the additional books of this series and can’t wait to see how they play out!!!

"I had faith in you until your obsession took over."

This is a book I've been looking forward to reading for a long time; the Maven Knight trilogy was one of my favourite indie book series (Matthew Romeo created in that series EVERYTHING that the Star Wars sequel trilogy could have been), so the news he was writing a prequel novel was music to my ears. The beta read of this story's earliest form was gripping enough, and having now read the finished work, I stand by my original assessment that this is Revenge of the Sith up to 11, a near Shakespearean tragedy where bonds of love and family are sundered by ambition, obsession, lust for power and the corruption of purpose into mania...

"Romulus, one of the Knights of the Remnant Order's shining stars, has it all; a loving wife, a newborn son and a purpose shaping the next generation of Knights to help chart Pan'gea's course. But beneath the seemingly perfect surface, cracks are forming. He's always known of his wife Dianna's belief in her own destiny to be the world's saviour, but paid it no mind. But when old rivals return and old jealousies boil to the surface, Dianna becomes ever more cruel and vindictive in her desire to hold onto her position, and as they drift further apart, he must decide what he's willing to sacrifice to keep his family safe..."

Romulus was a posthumous character in the main series, talked about in differing ways by others, so it was good to meet and get his own perspective about his reasons for taking the actions that would chart his son's course. Dianna's descent into righteous villainy, a brilliant example of showing how every villain is the hero of their own story, was both compelling and tragic to read (the final confrontation between her and Romulus was giving me such vibes of Anakin and Padme on Mustafar reversed, I was literally picturing Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen as Di and Rom in my head!), and the side characters were also well fleshed out and made compelling so you cared what became of them (Zakara, Felyx, Krissy and more). The political skulduggery and battle scenes were gorgeously written and so gripping, and some twists I didn't see coming... Long story short, if you enjoyed the Maven Knight trilogy or you're a fan of Star Wars or science fantasy fiction in general, this lavishly well-written story is a must read that will captivate, entertain and break your heart...

Yes it took me a minute to get through this book but not because I didn't enjoy it. I started reading the eBook but ended up getting the audiobook because I was getting frustrated not knowing how to say things in this book (yes there is a pronunciation guide but those never help me). I'm so glad I switched because I loved the narrators. We go back and forth between Dianna and Romulus but if it's a Dianna chapter and Romulus or another male speaks, the male narrator jumps in. Same thing in Romulus chapters. It helped liven up the story for me.

This was such a GREAT read! I absolutely loved the husband/wife dual POV.

Okay, let's talk about about DIANNA:
The author did a phenomenal job writing a mother character, who is also a leader, who is also the supposed "Messiah." Dianna's devolution into madness in this book was *chefs kiss* REALLY *chefs kiss.* I was rooting for her the whole book even though I knew that she was going to fall apart and become a villain. Her obsession with her own destiny was wonderfully woven throughout the narrative to provide this subtle breakdown. Chapter after chapter, especially in the latter half the book, Dianna's decisions SHOCKED me in a satisfying way. (MATT HOW DARE YOU KILL FELYX!!! I suppose I should blame Di, but I blame YOU).

Now, ROMULUS:
I enjoyed watching his struggle to let go of the woman he once loved. I really felt his emotions. As someone who's married myself, I think that provides a whole new perspective to this story. Letting go of your spouse, your partner, your PERSON!!!! It was just so heart-breaking and tragic. Romulus wanted to believe Dianna could be good and come out of her obsession of being the savior. But she couldn't, and it came at the cost of literally killing GOOD people. ALSO, Romulus made some dumb decisions that I yelled at him for, so that was fun. I always like it when a book makes me yell at it hahahaha. And another sidenote, it was cool to see a character with a VSD (ventricular septal defect). I haven't come across that in a book before!

The WRITING:
5 stars! I'm super picky with that (I'm an author and an editor myself). The narrative & prose were really well done. On a technical level, it read really smoothly, so A+ to the author. I think my *only* nit-picky qualm was there were a few description paragraphs that felt a bit purple-prose to me. (But that's just a me thing! I'm not a huge fan of super flowery descriptions that are on the longer side). Also, the word gyrate didn't vibe with me...

The PACING:
Another 5 stars. I like how the book started off with an assassination attempt against Dianna, literally in her living room, right next to Romulus as they are having a relaxing evening. It really set up an initial united front as husband & wife against an unknown enemy. The pacing started off with a bang, and for the most part, it kept a GREAT pace! I wasn't bored or wondering how long it would be before the story got interesting. Props to Matt for keeping a consistent level of interest, because the mid-book lull is such a prevalent thing in fiction, and Matt definitely avoided that.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Would definitely recommend! This is a prequel to a trilogy (which I have not read yet), and it stands on its own. So bravo to the author for writing a book that can be read and understood separate from the original source series. I'm excited to enter into the Maven Knight trilogy with the foundation of this prequel. Matt is definitely a talented writer and storyteller, and I'm looking forward to reading more of his work.

I will end my review with this:
THANK GOD THIS BOOK MADE ME FEEL SOMETHING!!!! That's all I'm looking for in a book really. Something to snag my attention and make me gasp a few times, damnit ;)

The Hold of Destiny, prequel to The Maven Knight series, is the second book of Matthew's I've read (Imperium being the first), and a sci-fi novel I didn't want to put down.

It has the action, it has the history and lore of the world of Remnant, and the ever heartbreaking betrayal from start to finish.

I really enjoyed how the world building was written into the story and not thrown at you all at once. You had time to absorb the information, while the story continued, but still getting to learn all the terminologies, the history, the lore, and the breathtaking views outside of murder and death.

I don't think a book has captivated me as much as this book has. Sure, I sped read through most of it in a day, but I didn't want to put it down. I wanted to feel the emotions of Romulus and Dianna, seeing how their trust in one another slowly broke over time. And not in a good way either. But it was done systematically that both excited me in how Dianna changed over the course of the book, and how sad I felt for Romulus in the decision he had to make.

I think it was clever to have the entire book with dual POV. For me, at least, there was more emotion to explore that by the end of the book, I was left reeling and in shock.

I have yet to read The Maven Knight series, and after reading The Hold of Destiny, the series that's been in my kindle waiting to be read, is finally going to get its turn.

Thank you Matthew for giving me the opportunity to read your book, and I highly recommend this to anyone who needs a sci-fi novel with action, betrayal, and the beginning of what I know is a great series. 10/10

The Hold of Destiny is an amazing action story with a captivating plot and in first-person no less which brings you even closer to the characters and I loved them. I like it when a book allows me to crawl into the heads of the Main Characters. Romeo also knows how to weave history and lore into his stories in exactly the right way to have you curious and keep you reading. It's an exciting story while it also touches on relationships and their development and what it means to be parents to a newborn.

For me this was the first book I read by Matthew Romeo and I'm so curious to see how Romulus will be seen by the other POV's in the series.

Overall, the book is beautifully written and can definitely recommend checking out the whole series out.

The Hold of Destiny by Matthew Romeo easily made the top of my best reads for 2024. I was immediately drawn to Romulus, noble, loyal to a fault, and brave. His wife, Dianna, is Centum and when a plot to kill her is revealed, her truest desires of power start to take over and she is unable to control her reaction to those who want to end her rule. As she becomes more and more fixated on taking down the opposition, the more of a line she draws between herself and her beloved husband.

I was immediately invested in the story. The world building, the character development, and the plot were all incredible, and if you're a fan of sci-fi, add this to your read list. I haven't read the other books written by Matthew Romeo yet, but I've added his backlist to my stack of books to be read!

The Hold of Destiny is an exciting first-person action adventure. Matthew vividly describes a world that is part archaic and part futuristic. I love encountering new words when reading. This book expanded my vocabulary. Grounded in the Maven Knight's technology, the foundation of the age-old power struggle is firmly rooted in the kryo magic gems each side uses to further their cause.
Some shocking reveals surprised me, and I wasn't sure how it would end. During my day, when I was out and about, I kept thinking about the characters and how they would escape their current predicament. It keeps you reading, even though you might scream at the characters..."Why did you do that!"

Wow, just wow. The Hold of Destiny gripped me from the first page. Romulus and Diánna’s relationship is beautifully layered, they’re not just warriors or leaders, they’re people with fears, love, and heartbreak. I found myself constantly wondering, would I choose my family or the mission. The political intrigue was sharp, the stakes were sky-high, and the emotional tension between husband and wife made this one of the best fantasy reads I’ve had this year. Fans of Red Rising or Game of Thrones, this is your next obsession
