I’ve walked the streets of Phoenix Valley for twenty two years knowing exactly who I am - an orphan, a human, a nobody. Summoned by The Hex to test my humanity, I was prepared to fail, destined to be the same mundane girl …
I was wrong. Pandora’s Box called to me, sensing a magic I never knew existed. With my world turned upside down and full of possibilities, I must now call Paradise Heights home. To live amongst supernaturals, attend Saints Academy, and find my place.
Curiosity has me willing to give this a try, but the Elites of Saints Academy tempt to distract me, and that’s something I can’t afford. Xander is gruff, Khaos cold, Zen soothing, and Adonis … lives up to his name.
Angel, Demon, God, Vampire, Shifter. I could be anything, anyone. I have three years to figure out who I’m meant to be…
DNF WHY DO FEMALE AUTHORS PERPETUALLY USE THE SHE'S NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS BS NARRATIVE. ALL WOMEN ARE UNIQUE AND INTERESTING. CHRIST. HAVE SOME FEMALE PRIDE.
The plot was interesting but the characters were almost cartoonish with how over the top they were depicted. The MC is instantly labeled as “special” and “different” and “naturally pretty” who “doesn’t use makeup”. I can’t.
Real quotes from the book:
Our FMC: ”But im not most girls”
One of our MMC talking about the FMC: ”She’s naturally beautiful without even trying.”
The MMCs agreeing to hate her on day 1 just because she’s pretty: “So, it’s agreed. We pretend she doesn’t exist,”
Then, this is an actual conversation: “What does being an incubus actually entail?” “You’re asking questions about me?” “I am” “We just chew you up and spit you out, princess. Nothing more, nothing less. All we do is take. And you’d just let me, wouldn’t you?” “But that’s all hearsay, right? There’s no confirmation yet. Who knows, you could be considered… nothing.”
I added as much context as I could, just in case anyone could explain that last part because I can’t make it make sense.
Also, the use of the word “hearsay” in casual conversation activated my gag reflex so hard I almost choked on my own saliva and it made my eyes roll so far back up my skull that I got a headache.
The RH is not worth it. ANYONE GOT ANY GOOD RH RECS?
5 stars THIS BOOK HAS TO BE MY FAVOURITE KC KEAN BOOK EVER!! Let's start by listing my one-click tropes, shall we? - PNR - Academy - Kickass FMC - Dangerous & Protective MCs - Greek Mythology This book had me reading it in one go and I loved every second. Rhea, like all of KC's FMC characters, was a badass in her own right. She has been alone and orphaned all her life. She stood up for herself and did not take any crap from anyone, especially the guys. When she turns 22, Rhea receives a summons to see if she has any supernatural blood, and boy was she surprised when Pandora's box revealed she did descend from supernaturals. Adjusting to life at Saints Academy has not been easy on Rhea, but luckily she has help from her newly made friend Harmonia. I loved how Harmonia stuck up for her and showed her the ropes. The story had great flow and I was sad when I reached the final chapter. Although I will say I did not see that last page happening.... Highly recommend you all start this series. Eager to read the upcoming books.
I like it. I liked it from the beginning and found myself easily lost in the story. It’s all explained really well where I don’t feel as if I’m running to catch up. I stopped reading because I didn’t feel like they liked her for any “real” reason. She was just an average girl. She wouldn’t defend herself and it just got boring. The guys had the bare minimum of personality and were u original. The queen bee thing is soooo overdone.
Cons: Watching someone jerk off is sooo gross. Especially if you’ve never met them. If a guy had done that he’d be branded a freak/worse. If he had given consent beforehand I wouldn’t be so grossed out. Not cool. People keep being “gone”. “Suddenly he was gone”. Where he go? Did he vanish? Slip out of the room? How did he go “gone”??? Why is every bad girl, everywhere, name Selene? Has nobody moved on from Gossip Girl. Also he took off his condom! And then said no when she told him to put it back on!!! What!!!!! That’s literally awful!! NEVER is that okay.
Way too much internal dialogue and the POV's don't add to the plot. The MC's character is not set any which way, just a lot of staring and acting completely clueless then all of a sudden she's portrayed as having it all together and very focused. Ridiculous really because when the boys are in the picture and she can't even walk in a straight line. The writing style is really not to my liking, how many times does she lick her lips??? I only read 40% of the book and found that same line annoying.
I finished this a week ago and I’ve already forgotten most of what happened… which I feels sums up my opinion on the book. It wasn’t bad! But it wasn’t amazing. It was just… there. It entertained me briefly, but also I could’ve survived without it. Not bad though!
I am super mad for not reading this sooner! I am hooked AF! I am a big fan of Greek mythology and I love how this book is influenced and has nods to it. I super duper love the FMC, Rhea cause she doesn't give a fuck and she just goes on with her life. She thought she was this normie type of girl living her life and wishing she was more than that in a world where shifters, demons, vampies, gods, and angels exist.
When she reaches 22, she has to take this test to make sure she doesn't have these supernatural powers. Welp. Do you know what happens? A LOT! Also, she is forced to go to saint's academy and for supernatural beings. However, she has to find out what she truly is. Everything is just chaos. Plus, she has to deal with 4 hot elites, who are just making her life a bit of heaven and hell at the same time.
The spice is just wonderful AF! I just need more. The tension and the banter are perfect. I just couldn't let go of the book and I can't wait to dive into the next book.
🏹 Bad ass FMC 🏹 Why choose Romance 🏹 Shifters, Demons, Angels, Gods, and Vampires 🏹 SMUTTY AF!!!! 🏹Possesive AF MMC 🏹 Greek Mythology 🏹 Dark academia vibes 🏹 Awesome world-building and the Plot is exciting AF!
I had such high hopes for this book. & honestly it wasn’t bad but i did have a few issues.
•Threw out the story the FMC became extremely unlikable to me. She went from being strong and independent to just being straight up mean and annoying. Especially to the love interests when they did nothing wrong most of the time. Nearly the entire book she was angry.
•There was also so much inner dialogue i wanted to stop reading, but i pushed threw because i really liked the concept for this story. I also counted some form of “I wet my lips” being used over like 20 times. I just wanted to give the FMC (mainly) some damn chapstick or something.😭
•She basically referred to herself as “not like other girls” a couple times & it really made me cringe.
•Idk there was just like no progress made within the characters at all threw out this book. I was gonna just read the next book but i think i might pass.🥲
Honestly it kills me to put down a two star review for this author. I adore this author- with that said I feel like this book wasn’t the same level as her other ones and it kills me to write that. I think that to write a paranormal book you need to be really detailed- this is a brand new world that you’re writing about and I just didn’t feel like I really knew anything of this world- yes, a little backstory was given, yes some info was covered but honestly- I just wanted more- information it felt rushed and not really complete. One of the amazing things about writing paranormal is that you (the author) creates the world, and it just didn’t feel super developed- I didn’t feel immersed in this new world.
My second issue was the lead characters. Again, It felt rushed, like beginning they’re not interested and neither is she, then next chapter there’s all of this sexual tension and of course some major female drama. The head principal/dean sort of threw her under the bus and painted a target on her and you just didn’t understand the why of it, it felt really out of context. At least you knew why barbett Dietrichson from featherstone academy was the way she was. This book felt very parallel to the other books this author has written only this was a paranormal. Idk I didn’t feel the chemistry- there wasn’t a lot of backstory or depth to the male leads and quite honestly I only feel like I sort of know of the only two who changed that stuck out to me. But those were the defining factors. There just didn’t feel like anything special or that stuck out. There wasn’t any real relaxing days the group took- aside from the one break where they stayed behind for her. The FMC is touted as a badass but she hasn’t done anything noteworthy, There’s a little snippet of her wielding a knife/dagger and that she’s “surprisingly good at it”. And that was really it, yeah there’s some snarky back talk and she did grab a guy by the throat but she just doesn’t come off as strong as Luna steel. There were some parallels but the fmc didn’t feel as well hashed as her.
There felt like a few inconsistencies- the whole red eye thing. It was supposedly linked to sex/ sexual like encounters/ high emotions, but she had a few moments with the guys where her eyes should’ve turned red but didn’t? A reviewer mentioned being turned off by the whole noncon with the guy taking off his condom, for me it was the principal interrupting mid coitus that really had me cringey.
This was really good but while reading I was 100% sure that I had read this exact same plot / school / magical system etc before. After about halfway I looked up the author though and saw I’d read literally every other series she has written lmao so I’m sure I just read another one of her own series.
I docked a star because this author feels the need to describe every single outfit the mcs are wearing in multiple paragraphs of detail every single chapter. There’s 5 mcs 😭
Anyway, I’ll give a more detail review the more books I read and I really really hope they don’t add anyone else to her unit.
Oh my god this book! I went in kind of blind but holy moly was it worth it. This is the first book I've read from KC Kean and in the first couple of chapters I could tell that I was going to enjoy myself. I fell really easily into the expressive writing style and Rhea honestly had my heart from the first chapter. I think the biggest reason I absolutely love this book is because Rhea is low key me. Every time something happened and I had a visceral reaction I would keep reading and see her react in a similar manner. It was incredibly entertaining and it really made me enjoy the book even more. The story is compelling, it really pulls you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Harmonia is a true bestie to Rhea who has been alone for so long it was nice to see the friendship that they'd formed. And then lets discuss our guys: It was honestly so easy to fall for all of them. They are all so unique in their own way but also work so well together because they see each other as brothers. In this world since there are more men than women, men form units and then seek out a women to complete the unit. Rhea was someone unexpected they didn't know they were waiting for. The tension, the spice, the banter, yes yes yes! That ending was very surprising but also there were some things that I had started to piece together. I wish I could read book 2 instantly but I guess I just have to wait. Since KC Kean called this a "soft cliffhanger" I'm scared for what's in store for me with the rest of this series. But at the same time I'm incredibly excited because I already love these characters so much.
4 stars. Reminded me of curse of the gods and blood of Hercules. Glad I gave this author another try because I dnfed featherstone for being too immature. This also has the typical “not like other girls” and jealous female bully stuff but it’s more bearable here than it was in featherstone
KC Kean hasn’t just dipped her toe into a whole new genre, she’s jumped all in and I am here for it! Awesome world building along with great character chemistry leads to one fantastic story!
Rhea is a sassy bada$$ that doesn’t take crap from anyone! Her 22nd birthday will be one she’ll never forget. Her boss lets her leave early so she’s going to surprise her boyfriend, yeah you guessed it, she catches him with his neighbor. To get even she punctures his tires on his precious car, only fair right? As she returns home she notices she’s got mail. She never gets mail unless it’s an overdue bill. One letter is wishing her luck and the other is her reminder that now that she’s 22 she will need to report to the town hall to be tested for magic!
After the war of Gods there was great celebration amongst the people and 9 months later lots of half human, half supernatural babies were born. So now 22 yrs after the war all must be tested to see if they have magic. Surprise good or bad we don’t know but Rhea barely touches the rim of Pandoras Box and her dreary life changes forever.
This girl is tough, she’s ready to take on the Saints Academy or is she out of her element with these gods, angels, demons, vampires and werewolves? She doesn’t know what she is half of and for the first book she’s considered “nothing” but an earthling by her classmates.
When she arrives at Saints Academy she’s sorted into the best hall with 4 of the hottest guys she’s ever laid eyes on. Adonis, Zen, Khaos and Xander are all supernatural beings. She’s drawn to them as they are to her but there are outside forces and unknown enemies that have their own agenda.
Just when it was getting hot, heavy and so good we get interrupted, literally, and left on a cliffhanger of epic proportions!
August isn’t too long of a wait for the next book right?
First of all, I need to just get this out there… Xander is bae. Or whatever the youths are saying these days 😂😉
This was an amazing paranormal/fantasy debut from KC Kean! I had zero doubts about that, since I’ve loved all of her contemporary works. The magical aspects and world building were totally fascinating! The idea of magical beings who don’t find out their actual species, let alone powers, until they’re in their twenties added some curiosity to the story.
Rhea was a badass and I loved her attitude. She was prickly (for good reason) and she didn’t take anyone’s crap, especially not the Elites who ruled the school. I liked that she wasn’t so completely closed off to connections that she spurned all offers of friendship - Harmonia was a fabulous friend and balanced Rhea so nicely. I hope we get to see more of her and the twins in future books!
The guys seemed to be jerks or indifferent at first, but they definitely grew on me as the plot developed. I was totally surprised at how things progressed between each of the guys and Rhea, and all of them had depth and unpredictability that I appreciated.
The plot itself kept the pages turning nonstop from beginning to end, and that ending almost made me throw my kindle. Almost 😒 I’m so excited to read more in this world!
Rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 2-3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ picks up as the series continues, would have liked scenes more drawn out Tropes: paranormal, academy, RH, demons, angels, vampires
Hot and steamy academy (not 18) RH with an independent FMC. Good plot.
The series was good. And the MMCs were adorable and hot as fuck. You had good side characters. The last book was my least favorite. I think the story fell flat at the end because the author didn’t properly describe the villains’ motivations or why there was drama between two of the characters. People acted without reason throughout the series and there were plot holes. But I’m still giving 4 stars because the first three books were great and I enjoyed the series over all.
Story follows Rhea, an orphan human living in a poor town after the supernatural war. She discovers that she has powers after mandated testing and is shipped off tot the extravagant academy against her will. There, she meets deliciously hot MMCs, who don’t want anything to do with her, at least at first. Can they resist each other? Can Rhea figure out her powers? Buckle up for some drama and hot sex.
Cool plot ruined by wordy, repetitive writing and a god awful h. I was liking her at first but by 30% I was sick of her being so combative and angry at everything. We get it, we heard it 500 times, yes you “spent 22 years as a human” but that doesn’t give you an excuse to treat all the Hs like crap. She is so mean to them. She fights everything. She isn’t eating and the one is trying to help her and she’s fighting him? On eating! Keeps saying she belongs to no one blah blah, all because of pancakes. She finally stops fighting everything around like 75% and agrees to work together but by then I was so over her that I will not be continuing on. Honestly she was so bad that I would hesitate before reading anything else by this author.
it was entertaining but the “i’m not like other girls” and “im 22 years old/i’ve had my own back for 22 years” gets really old. also the fmc is not really likable? would I try book 2? yes
Man will zudem unbedingt erfahren „was“ Rhea ist, was es noch spannender macht.
I am being generous I feel like with this review. There were so many things I disliked about this book. BUT it had a somewhat decent backstory. First of all, this author really needs to invest in a thesaurus. There are a lot of overused words in the book - including the F-bomb. It just got old. Be more creative. It wasn't the only word overused at all - but at one point there were 6 of them on one page. There were editing issues in the beginning of the book. Pieces of two of the chapters were obviously cut up and jumbled and it got a bit confusing. Thankfully, it was only the two chapters in the beginning - but still this should have been caught by beta readers or an editor so shame. The FMC is not very likable. I have no problems with her being a plain jane. Not every fmc needs to be the blushing heroine or the bad@ss who takes no prisoners. So normally I would love her. However, this girl Rhea goes out of her way to push people away for no real reason. At this point she is hot and cold so much she is coming off as maybe a bit off upstairs and it should really be red warning flags to anyone who wants to befriend her.
Alright hit 70% and I am calling it for very much the same things that seem to be repeated in the comment section but I need to clarify.
#1 Let's start with WHO IS EDITING THIS BOOK? The book is full of phrases being reused, actions being reused, run on sentences and repetitive language. We do not need the scene to occur, then get a rehash of the scene, then get the internal struggle the scene caused.
#2 The female lead character is actually why I'm not continuing with this book. The internal monologue this woman has will end me. The switch from "I'm so bad ass I slashed someone's tires" to "I'm always alone no body wants me I'm nothing" is aggravating. The I'm different from other girls narrative is one that needs to be reexamined across the bored because the weak portrayal of women who have survived trauma is aggravating. She also doesn't communicate with anyone around her then is supposed she has no friends.
#3 the book became tedious. The lack of editing and lack of interest just had me asking why I was spending time on this. I was holding out for the RH but after she sleeps with Xander and it was run of the mill starting a sould bond I was out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Decent story, stuttered in a few places while feeling predictable in others. Regardless, it was still entertains, though the best part may be the female friendships that are growing.
This has to be my fave book of KC Kean I did not go in with any expectations since i have not liked some of her previous books as much as i wanted. But i got happily surprised and i enjoyed it until the end. It´s a solid story and intriguing and interesting characters. Rhea which is the fmc is a take no shit kinda girl, she stands up for herself and does not back down if cornered. She gets a friend from day one, Harmonia i love that girl she got Rhea´s back and is loyal and true. I am a bit tired of these bully books since the reason for the fmc being bullied is stupid and petty so i am relieved that this one was not a bully. I liked the guys, "the elites" lol, i thought it was nice that they where so different from each other and was pretty straight forward mostly. Xander, Andonis, Zen and Khaos. And we got to read from their PoV which helped a lot to the story. ofc it´s a cliffhanger in the ending, i would explain the ending that shit is going down right now.
I don’t get this. Why are the guys so latched to her? Like her specifically because I believed there are other girls who couldn’t careless. Like her best friend….
It’s like the only reason they liked her was because she was “new”.
Idk maybe it’s because I would absolutely hate someone like her if I met in person soo can’t really root for her. I just constantly roll my eyes at her antics and drama that just seems to follow her….. girl maybeeeeee you are the drama…. Maybe we you should sit still for a second and think before reacting.
I am a total fan of KC and when I heard she was going to do a paranormal/ fantasy I was so so excited. Holyyyy wow woman you blew this out of the water. I devoured it in one sitting. I need more. Thank goodness August isn’t to far away
I will be continuing with atleast the next book, but I desperately hope she cuts down the “wetting my lips”. I had a pretty good idea of what she was but I wasn’t expecting that second part, so I’m only going to continue for the hope she becomes a badass.
