Author’s The mages and magic take a support role in book one but they will come into play more in later books. Also, the main character has the appearance of a child despite being a young adult.
Hi My names Michael. Need a free beta proofreader? Left my email addy in comment concerning a minor text error I’d leave it here, but probably not a good idea. Smiles
You are a good story teller I really hope you are able to grow into writing fulltime (financially & lifestyle). This story: Has the potential to be the next 50 book Honor Harrington; with a dash of Paksenarrion mixed in. If I were rich an editor or a publisher. I’d fund you. I’m none of those but can offer this. Smiles Cheers to you having a long prosperous writing career.
I prefer my science fiction magic-free, but the author does a good job of believably incorporating "magic" into the worldbuilding. As with many YA stories and most sci fi adventures, there is a body count that includes "good" characters. Annis is interesting and likeable with room to grow into an even more impressive character. Her supporting cast is enjoyable. There is laugh-out-loud humor. I thoroughly enjoyed Scavengers and look forward to more adventures with Annis and crew. I read this book in KU but will buy it to reread.
The book reads like a light novel. It is well written and has dangerous and intense moments, but the author doesn't slow down to describe all the intricate details. The mechanic from Earth is able to learn how to fix space ships because he's a mechanic. He does have a few struggles but we don't need a whole story arc about him learning. What I really like is how smart the main character is. A lot of times when I read these fast-paced books, the author has the MC make dumb or emotional decisions to push the story in the right direction. Or they tried to make a smart character, but the author themselves is not analytical enough to write a smart character. Then I'll find myself wondering why the supposed smart MC is making such dumb decisions.
The main character of this book was consistently making well reasoned choices that I couldn't find fault with (taking into account that she has to make these decisions in a split second, under pressure). It was quite enjoyable and entertaining to imagine her looking like a 10 year old while making excellent command decisions and participating in gunfights.
The author doesn’t waste much of the reader’s time on extraneous details. We learn that Annis Del Pounce was given an early regimen of anti-aging drugs and therefore looks considerably younger than her seventeen years. She is extremely goal oriented & works herself very hard at expanding her knowledge base as well as her skills.
The real fun begins after she survives the crash landing on an unknown planet. She has a deeply held belief that behaving in an honorable manner is crucial to her. Doing what is right isn’t a cliche but a major part of the code she lives by. I think this series will be fun & interesting to read, especially for fans of David Weber’s Honor Harrington novels.
This one is hard for me to review, I enjoyed the story, but it was a bit hard to read. Great authors make the story effortless to read while this one struggled a bit to keep me engaged. A story where the MC is stuck at a prepubescent age for an extended time, even for a good reason, means the characters growth as a person is fairly limited. Romance is out, no racing hormones as a normal 17yr old would experience, and even if she did fall for someone they would look a lot older than her. The author was inspired by the Honor Harrington novels, so if you like that sort of story you should enjoy this one.
Annis is 17 years old, an ensign on board a military vessel when it crash lands. I won't go into the plot because it's twisty in all the best ways. The hero in this story is from a military spacer family, but even so was forced to grow up very quickly. She has flaws and problems, which is far better than a lot of the cookie cutter characters I've been reading lately. I greatly enjoyed this book, which is a tremendous amount of fun. I won't ruin it by going into plot details. I I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Wasn't super excited at the start, but the book got better as it went along. The author stated that magic was mostly utility.I think it's a little more than that. But I look forward to even more in the future. The mix of tech and magic is interesting. The main character is somewhat confusing but her age and physicality explain a lot. The secondary characters are fairly fleshed out and have uniquepersonalities. I'm looking forward to seeing what the author has for the rest of the series.
See above. Decent plot, characters plus multiple settings. MC has a unique condition and multiple opportunities along with an abundance of resources. Gets to pick her crew.
The existing governments of the union and empire seem to have expansion and control on their agendas.
When is the Android with information and abilities going to show up?
The first ten chapters, which setup the main story, weren’t very convincing and I nearly gave up on several occasions. Fortunately I kept going and I was pleasantly surprised how the story developed. As a ‘Space Opera’ it was a bit simplistic, but the incorporation of magic added to the story and the main characters were interesting. If possible I would have given 3.5 stars, at the moment I have given four stars in the hope this will encourage the author to write a second book.
I was a little wary to start this considering the main character looks like a child but is actually older. The author explains their reasoning perfectly but it still felt odd, then I got over my feelings and just read the book and I enjoyed it immensely. Annis is a character with a great arc and her companions even more so. Their adventures are rough but it brings them all the more closer together.
The addition of Alina was uber cute!

With scfi you have to suspend you're disbelief to be entertained. With this story it's hard, like really hard. The character has incredible luck all breaks go her way along with overpowered and superior leadership in every action. It is a slog but the story has promise so I'll give it one more shot.
An old fashioned space opera! The storyline is well crafted and the characters are well developed. The attention to detail is good. The balance between action and character development is very good. This is the first time I’ve read one of Michael Gnizak’s books and I’m impressed. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
The plot was a never-ending roller coaster ride, never letting you stop reading. I have heard people say; "I could not put it down," but I appreciate it now. I will be getting this series for my grandkids. One more thing I loved about this story is that there is no swearing at all. Thank-you Michael
This was an immense find. I haven't enjoyed reading a work like this in a long time. Annis, Alina, Kelly, the entire Family. The 'Magic' is fresh and diverse. The DLM is a genius move. And what about the unknown 'Magic' object, where will it fit in. There are two books now, there had better be more coming. There just has to be!
A really fun story. I really enjoy strong female characters such as the David. Weber females in his stories. I do hope that the series will continue. Who knows maybe even as long as the honor harrington books. I recommend it wholeheartedly for anyone that likes strong female characters. Keep making more.
I love finding new authors! Michael Gnizak hits all the bullet punches. Good storyline, great characterization, with humor and a lot of action. Now, on to the next book!
Sometimes you find a book that may or may not be want you are into. This starts off with a plot that is hard to see where it is going. But, persevere and you will find yourself pulling for our heroine. Vol #2? I hope so.
The book had a good variety and strength of characters. I normally have a couple of books going at the same time. But once I started "Scavengers of the Void", I kept going to the end. Then I ordered the next book in the series.
Fun, exciting and different space story with a bright young heroine who believes in protecting her people. Great addition of magic users on the ships team. Can’t wait for the next story! Well worth the read.
It’s a bit young for me, but well, I’m in my second, okay third childhood. The story line, is different, the mage thing and how earth is through me, but it’s refreshing. I’m going to download the second book in this series. I do recommend to others that like sci fi
A survey ship crashes on a planet. Some crew died but others are saved. Those saving them have a secret that would mean critical if not fatal trouble. The youngest crew member leads a combined group into space and adventures.
A feel good book which hits all the spots. A young woman thrown into a crash situation recovers, collects crew and then salvages an ancient space ship. Looking forward to the next book.
I couldn't finish this book and stopped reading after 20%. The characters actions were just not believable. It started out fine, but then the story got more and more ridiculous! I couldn't stomach it anymore and did myself a favour and stopped. Grammar and writing style was fine though.
I really enjoyed this novel. It was fun. The characters were well written and well developed. I liked them and I like the story. I'm looking forward to the next adventure!.
This book is full of outstandingly fun mixture of characters. Full of action and adventure. The captain, a seemingly young "girl", shows a whole lot more depth and courage that just makes this a hard book to put down.
