In My Closet

"I got a golden retriever… Demon."

Did I expect to get another pet when I moved into my first, and probably only, ever house? No, no, I did not. Especially since this pet came with claws, sharp teeth, and horns. Oh, and not to mention, he did not come from this realm.
I only hoped for a quiet little home to write my life away in my stories, but apparently, that is too much to ask for.
Valphan isn't too bad, though, after I look past the fact that he creeps on me from the closet in my room—yeah, totally not weird. Along with the fact he is a jealous little turd who chases everyone and everything away from me, but that's to protect me from all the bad in the world.
Honestly, though, he is delightful and protective for a demon.
Never does a night go by that I am lonely because he is always there to blanket me in his shadowy embrace, and I can always sleep soundly at night knowing he is watching over me constantly—seriously, does he even sleep!?
It is impossible to resist his acceptance and adoration of me with time. Especially during the nights with me on his lap on the couch, where he lets me pick his brain for story ideas.
Then, when he goes to the ends of the world for me, I knew I became damned with him until the end of eternity.

This is an ARC review:

Book was a fun, one day read. Good banter and good spice. I'm always here for a 'run through the forest' scene. The MMC was a big cinnamon roll and the FMC was a little on the stubborn side which I liked. She was a bit firey. Overall I enjoyed my time with this book. If you're a fan of monster romance or shadow demon princes stuck in closets then most definitely pick up this novella. You'll enjoy it!

What can I say? I love me a shadow daddy 😂❤️🖤! Overall, I did enjoy this little Novella I also loved how Kas and Stella made a cameo appearance. Valphan was so sweet, caring, protective and a little nasty freak 😈😋. It’s fun to see character swap from their usual perceived characteristics for example, it’s usually the MMC that’s broody in this case that was Gracie and Valphan was the sweetheart! The only constructive criticism that I have is that I wish the author flushed out a bit the reasoning why Valphan was bound to the closet. It touched up on it, but didn’t give much details that left me a little bit confused. But I really did enjoy this book.

I read this book without reading the first, and although this can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading them in order assuming there is more world building in the first book. The story moves fast without much explanation on what creatures are normally present/encountered in the world leaving me a bit confused on how common demon relationships are or aren't. I was left wanting a bit more history on Valphan and his world prior to being stuck in Gracie's closet. I was also a bit thrown by how modern he sounded and him using modern slang as a demon that has been in a slumber for quite a while and not familiar with modern technology.

Overall this is a good, quick read if you are interested in a lot of spice with romance being the plot. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters.

⭐ARC Review ⭐ (3.25)
This is a fun demon/shadow series that doesn't take itself too seriously. I enjoyed the overall story, but I think the writing and pacing (time jumping and relationship development) just didn't do it for me this time like the previous book in the series. A quick and spicy read if you want something with an enemies to lovers, insta-lust, fated mates and innocent heroine dynamic.

Genre: Romance/Spicy/Supernatural
Audience: Mature
Series: Umbra Demons Book 2; sequel to "Under My Bed"
TW included in the beginning of the book.

Gracie cannot believe her life is finally turning around when she receives an inheritance of a house free of her overbearing parents. Though she learns that not all is what it seems in her new home.

This book is not a slow burn. It's perfect for a reader who wants to get straight into the action, pun intended. We are introduced to Gracie who is talking with her friend Stella and Stella's demon boyfriend. I had not read the previous book, so this was my introduction to the realm of Demons being part of this character's world. I'm not sure if the previous book has more of a background on the human/demon world interactions, but we are introduced to another couple later in the book who engage in this type of relationship. Perhaps, it's a in plain sight secret. If you know, you know.

For me, this book does not hold back on getting the reader straight to the sexual desires of the introverted Gracie and sexually starved Valphan. The writer’s descriptions take the reader into the intimate acts that makes us turn to ensure no one is reading over our shoulders. If you are looking for a book to read the titillating erotica that most of us equate to TikTok's booktok, I think you will not be disappointed.

I do wish this book fleshed out the societal world Gracie and Valphan's relationship revolves in. Though it seems they are both who prefer the intimate confines of their home, Gracie and Valphan do have previous relationships with humans and demons before they ever met. Did they become one of those couples who forget all about the friends they have once they are in a relationship?

Bit of a spoiler here, I also wish the conflict between Gracie and the spirit would have been better developed. Yes, Valphan had a job guiding spirits to Hell, but the conflict just seemed like last minute add to get Valphan to reveal how he can free himself from the confines of the closet.

What this story did really well was create a desire for me to see more of the characters’ worlds. I want to see the conflict of Gracie with her family. Why did grandma give Gracie the house? Did Grandma know about what was hidden in the house? I guess I am a chaos monster and just want to see those internal and external conflicts which created Gracie. Valphan, also has so many things that are a mystery. I truly enjoyed the descriptions of his various forms but wonder if he has a form of glamor that allows him to be in the human world and only those who know the secret see his true form. Again, many of these questions could have been answered in the first book. These are just some of the questions I had while reading.

As a round up, this is a book for the girly and guys who want a straight to the action romance with an introvert female lead and a domineering golden retriever male lead. It's a quick read so you can always bookmark those steamy parts for later consumption over and over again. I will likely read the first one to see if any of my queries can be answered and will want to read the next one in this series.

This was a 4.25 for me. I really enjoyed this book as it was equal parts funny, cute and spicy. Now this is a novella so it wasn't a super deep book, but it was a fun read that was a page turner that had me entertained. While it does focus on the spicy time with time jumps which make sense as it is a novella there was still a good buildup to their relationship and chemistry that I believed it.

I loved Valphan who is super sexy, knows how to give a girl a good time, understand consent and comes in 1st place when it comes to aftercare. OMG I don't usually love golden retriever MMCs because they are too wholesome for me, but he had some edge to him (mostly with his dirty dirty mouth) that was just what I needed. I do wish she had leaned a little more into that side of him just so there was a little more of that dichotomy, but I got enough that I still fell in love with him as an MMC.

I loved Gracie who I thought was just so sweet, adorable and funny. And I loved seeing her poke the demon and the way she would tease him. She definitely made me smile with her antics.

I finished this in a day and probably could have finished this in an hour or two but life and responsibilities.

This book is about Grace who moves into a house she inherited and starts to feel like she is not alone in her house especially in her bedroom. So, what does she do? Calls in her best friend who is married to a demon to see what is up. Well, it turns out she has a demon stuck in her closet with claws, sharp teeth and a TAIL! As attractive as he is she was not looking for a roommate or a pet as he does in some ways remind her of her dog. All she was hoping for was a quiet home to write her stories but instead she has this jealous and overprotective demon who is always there for a hug or lets me pick his brain for story ideas. It's all getting a little hard to resist.

Her voice sounded like a choir of tortured souls to my ears.

So lovely.

------
This is book 2. It can be read as a standalone, but maybe consider reading the first book.

Content warning (not a complete list): explicit s3x, strong language, dub con/cnc, mentions of @ssault, and violence. The author has a content warning in the book. Check it for any possible triggers.

Spice meter: 4
------

If you're looking for something quick and spicy to read, this book is something to consider.

Gracie is an editor and aspiring author who doesn't want a demon in her life. However she ends up getting one along with the house she inherited. She was a feisty, introverted fmc. I was impressed she hired a priest and demonologist to check out her house beforehand. Not that it helped, but I liked her incentive.

Valphan is a demon who is trapped in Gracie's closet. He is in a limbo state, until Gracie comes along and wakes him up. I found Val to be amusing, affectionate and surprisingly modern. It's nice to see this demon likes seeing women be independent.

The interactions between Gracie and Valphan felt youthful, spicy and cute. Their banter was amusing and adorable. Same for the pet names they called each other. I enjoyed their dirty talk.

I found some things were not explained properly or were explained until later in the book. I feel it affected the flow of the story for me. I was left feeling confused at times. I know this is a novella, but I wish this story was more fleshed out. I had fun reading this though and found it entertaining.

I received an ARC through the author in exchange for an honest review. I'm very grateful for the opportunity I had to ARC read this book.

A Dark, Cozy, Romance...with a Demon

BLUF: This is a cozy, SCHPICY, romance for all the paranormal girlies who want to be destroyed and adored. 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

WARNING ⚠️
If you do not enjoy degrading language during juicy scenes, paranormal...members, open door *detailed* intimate scenes, or pain and fear with your schpice, TURN AROUND. This space is not for you. We love you, but this area is for those comfortable in the ✨️darkness✨️

Genre: Romantasy

Setting: First person with multiple POV. 90% of the book happens in the home of the FMC where a portal to the after life waits.

Meet the FMC: Gracie is just a normal Asian woman who inherits a gorgeous house. She's an edgy, schpicy writer, but she's also a virgin. She is aware of the paranormal thanks to her best friend's demon boyfriend, but has little to no first-hand experience.

Meet the MMC(s): Valphan is a demon prince, gatekeeper, shadow daddy, and shifter. He is stuck in a portal, which is essentially in the FMC's closet.

Short overview, no spoilers: This is one of those books where the romance is the plot. There are minor side characters and a wild subplot, but this is about a demon and his love. His struggle to freedom, her struggle with her emotions, her romantic exploration, and their journey together is sweet and *explosive*.

I normally read books that are more fantasy with a romantic subplot. Usually, I find that when romance is the main story, the FMC makes unrealistic choices, the connection is too easy, the schpice drags, and I never find myself satisfied. This book is NOT that! The pace is fantastic, the vibe is cozy, the scenes are unhinged in the best way, and everything is tied up with a perfect little bow. Please read this book!

Rose Chase is one of my favorite indie authors! So I've read most of her books and OmG is all I can say. If she wrote it I'm reading it...
I read under my bed and it was good don't get me wrong

This book is not a slow burn by any means. If that is what you're looking for, look no further. This is a standalone, but it is the 2nd in the series. You do not need to read the first one first. However, it will help with some of the information if you do read under my bed first. Stella and Gracie are besties. Stella is in the first book, so that part would help if you read the first book. It would explain Stella's relationship with her demon that is brought up in the first book...but this one was better....

This book gets into the spice very quickly... and if you're a booktok girly, you won't be disappointed. This book is full of smut...
I do wish this story was a little bit longer.. It would have been nice to have a better understanding of certain things. (Don't want to give the book away).

I loved both Stella and Valphan.. I loved how he called her his little blessing... omg that gave me butterflies in my stomach just reading it... the spice was good. There was a spot in this short story that I didn't see coming and I couldn't put it down til I figured out what happened and shortly after I found out what happened the book was almost over so I had to finish it.... I hope we got a tase of the next demon for her next book. I'm interested in reading about a demon who found a mate that is a cop. Like yess please can't get any better..
I better not say anymore... im in fear of giving too much away, but you need to read this series. If you haven't yet. So far, this is the best one in this series of hers.
He was so. Golden retriever literally... FMC is the perfect amount of stubborn and sparky. I could relate to her as well. I need a demon in my closet, lol...

Exploring What a Demonic Golden Retriever is—and isn’t.
In My Closet
by Rose Chase

This book will take you on a thrill ride you may not expect. A demon in a closet of a young girl’s first excursion out of the parent’s house is bound to put both her and the reader on edge. The prospects of suspense at what is around the corner keep the pages flying by. You just have to know if the demon has…other ideas.
The author’s tag line and the uniqueness of the setting drew me in. It was not what I expected. The read was fast and culminated in a satisfying finale. Not something I often find in books these days.
Searching for the turn by the demon was where the suspense kept me outpacing myself. Gracie was not my favorite character in the book. She did her part being the subject of the demon’s entertainment. That is until she (spoiler, had to stop myself here).
It was the demon, Valphan who stole the show. Rose really shows her character development skill creating this full rounded closet trapped demon.
Much of the book stamps along hammering home explicit lust filled demonic interventions where Valphan takes Roseto heights she had never dared dream. This enters early and sets the tone of the book.
I enjoyed the novelette and think it holds a place in modern adult audiences that has really come into popular reading. If you are not squeamish about brazen thoroughly detailed scenes of a sexual nature, the book is a playful romp with suspense at every turn.

I went into this book without having any idea what was going on, and it moved REALLY fast so my suggestion would be to start at the beginning of the series (if there are more? I'm not even sure honestly). The story jumps ahead, weeks at a time so you don't get the interaction between characters. I think if the story was fleshed out a bit i would have enjoyed this book a lot more. There were a couple of points that something was hinted at but it didn't tell you what happened, you just needed to "know" what the character was thinking, feeling or doing. The potential was there for in depth character arcs. I also would have liked to have more physical descriptors for the characters(specifically the umbra demons) as It was really hard to visualize what Valphan looked like, though Gracie(a human) was described quite well. All in all it was a quick read, i enjoyed it but i would have liked it so much more if i were pulled into the world instead of trying to look at the world through a window that's a little foggy.

First of all thanks for putting in the pronunciations of their names in the beginning of the book, it was really helpful when reading and second of all I really love Valphan, and his nick name Gracie had for him Fawny, I wish I had a replica stuffed animal to sit on my bed to capture the cuteness of him staring at Gracie in his little makeshift bed being a cutie. I thought it was funny and cute when Valphan and Kastoreon met each other again once Fawny was able to come out of the closet, it reminded me of two bro,s reacquainting with eachother. The only thing a wish is that Gracie would of accepted Valphan sooner cause he was just too cute to deny, but in the end when his form changed and she was 100% accepting of it, really warmed my heart. All in all this book was cute, fun and spicy a would not be opposed to a third book 😊

Gracie is an editor and is trying to write her first romance book, so when she gets the opportunity to move from her parents house and finally live like she wants to live, something living in her closet won’t make her leave.

And when she discovers that Valphan, one shadow demon prince, is trapped in her closet she tries to free him but that’s something difficult.

Valphan is a shifter shadow demon with a golden retriever personality that’s so smitten with his fated mate, Gracie. He wants to be free of the closet to be able to care for her in every way he can.

I loved Valphan and Gracie, and how we get to see the other mated princes a little bit.

Please, can I order one Valphan for me?

This was a quick novella and book 2 in the series. I enjoyed the short story but there is a lot of sex/smut.

We can’t forget the demon 😈 with the filthy mouth Valphan. Gracie is an author who moves into her inherited home that has a demon stuck in her closet. She calls on her bestie for help since she’s married to a demon. Gracie is not interested in having a demon relationship or any kind of bother right now. She wants to finish writing and have some quiet time. Valphan is not going to let her forget him.

If you enjoy a quick read, a demon with filthy mouth and lots of sex, this one is for you.

I really enjoyed this book. It was quick and amusing supernatural story. I would have liked it so much more if it would have been longer. The plotting was efficient and pulled you along. The back and forth interaction between Gracie and Ralph will keep you entertained throughout the entire book. The side characters are well drawn and fit well into the story line. I enjoyed how how they flowed along in the story. Demons are somehow sexy to me especially when they come to the rescue.
This book keep me entrenched as its story idea and characters ideas are not ones you see in every day stories. This is one you sill not regret picking up and reading.

3.5⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️ In My Closet is my third Rose Chase book and I was not disappointed. This novella is a follow-up to Under My Bed. It’s a spicy demon romance, reverse grumpy-sunshine, with fated mates.

It follows Gracie who just wanted to be alone in her new home to edit her book, but her her shock she finds that there is a demon (Val) living in her closet and he is convinced they are mates. Gracie’s attraction for Val grows and she gives in to the idea that they are mates.

The banter between these two is perfection!! And I love the he calls her “my blessing!” So freaking cute!! 🥰 I can’t wait to read another Rose Chase book!

Not your typical coming out of the closet

When Gracie is given an inheritance that included a home she jumped at the chance to get away from her uber religious family.

She had the house checked over since her best friend mated a demon. Nothing could have prepared her for a realization that something was in her closet. Thankfully Kas was able to figure out what was going on. They finally had located Val even though he was still stuck in the closet.

This was a fun and spicy story. The gatekeeper demon and the smut editor/author. I loved all the little surprises with the gate.

I need a shadow demon soulmate. Gotta love kinky uses for shadows.

Too cute! Makes me want to buy a house in hopes of getting my own demon! 🙃 I also read Under My Bed and absolutely loved it.

These demons are sweet, sensual and just plain dirty when they want to be! The banter between these two will have you cackling and kicking your feet.

Gracie and Valphan find themselves in an unlikely - new homeowner with a shadow demon stuck literally in the closet - kind of situation. Gracie takes this knowledge like a champ, let’s be honest.

Valphan loves to pester Gracie when she’s working at the computer.

I am absolutely here for all of these shadow daddy/golden retriever/cinnamon roll demons.

I cannot wait for the next Umbra Demons installment.

I'm obsessed with Rose's writing style. In my Closet, Book 2 of the Umbra Demons series is funny and filled with great banter.
Gracie a fiery FMC and Valphan is an obsessed, sexy Shadow Daddy living in her closet.

"I got a golden retriever… Demon."

God, this was such a cute read! I adored, loved, fetishised Valphan! If I could have evicted Gracie and moved into that house myself, I would have done it! This is a dark and dirty novella; the storyline isn't deep, there is a demon, there are shadows, and there is a lot of sex! And honestly, it didn't need much more! This is a new author and troupe to me, but I will return for more. If you like a quick read jammed full of smut (hot, hot, hot shadow smut!) and a demon that lives for his blessing, this is just the read for you!

If you’re looking for quick, funny, cute and spicy book look no farther. Gracie and Valphan chemistry is off the charts and their banter is top notch

Gracie: feisty, introverted, funny, sweet an adorable. She is an editor and an inspiring writer who just moved into a house that she hasn’t heard it. Seems she is not alone in her new house.

Valphan: is a demon who is trapped in Gracie's closet. A sweet, charming, Flirty, gentlemen one at that, the golden retriever shadow demon with a cuddly side.

"Rotten balls of Lucifer!"

This paranormal dark romance is a spicy, cheeky, and quick read. Valphan is effortlessly charming. Gracie took a bit longer to warm up to, but even in this Novella with minimal character development, she grew on me. Still, Valphan steals the spotlight.

Instead of delving deep into character relationships, this novella cranks up the spice. Sometimes non-stop, one after another. A++ for the spice!

Definitely recommended if you're in the mood for something light and spicy—this story brings ALL the heat.

Sequel to 'Under My Bed'

All Gracie wanted was to be alone in her new home to be able to focus on her stories. The only problem is that Gracie doesn't feel alone. Calling for some help from her friend, they find that Gracie has a demon living in her closet. Not knowing how to feel, she is thrust with a demon roommate who is overprotective of her.

These two have a funny chemistry. Valphan has the golden retriever energy with a dirty mouth.
Gracie loves to always tease Valphan. The teasing and spice makes for this quick read.

Rose Chase delivers the spice with Valphan the demon and Gracie the wholesome girl next door (until he gets his paws on her).

Their banter was spicy and fun and I enjoyed this book. It's very different than my typical genre's but sometimes its nice to step out of your comfort zone and be surprised.

Is it possible for a demon to be a freak in the sheets and a golden retriever in the streets? Yes, yes it is. Valphan proves it to be true.

Overall a quick, fun and spicy read that I would recommend.

Cute, funny, spicy demon novella. Just as good as the other book in the series, Under my Bed. Body positivity, the demon is a golden retrieve who sleeps in a pile of clothes inside her closet, and is mad when he gets compared to the FMC's golden retriever. Because he knows the similarities are apt. But his devotion to her is so adorable and cute, and I love imagining a demon giving a girl puppy dog eyes for attention. And the spice is excellent. He's so good at the positive, yet demeaning, dirty talk. Lovers of monster $mut, this book is for you!

Loved Grace’s character and Valphan’s super quick acceptance of her as his mate. I wish there was more development of the story around Grace’s oppressive parents, it was mentioned a few times but not explored much in depth.

The Shadow Daddy Demon spiciness was really good and Valphan’s dirty talk game is supreme. I think that some of Grace’s background is unclear and makes her acceptance of their relationship feel a little unlikely.

Overall, it was a quick fun read! I enjoyed the storyline and the spice, for being under 160 pages the author does a great job of telling a complete story.

In my closet is book 2 and part of the Umbra Demons series, it’s a spicy, romcom, paranormal romance, which follows the story of Gracie an author who has moved into her inherited home only to learn she is no the only occupant.

Rose has done it again, I am loving the umbra demons series. Gracie and Valphan chemistry was hot! The banter had me giggling and the spice was spicy.
Overall this was a fun, cute and spicy quick read and I recommend to all those that enjoy PNR with some plot and big spice.

I had the privilege to read this as an Alpha Reader and it didn't disappoint. As an Alpha reader, we understand that we are reading it unedited. So, I am really looking forward to re-reading this as soon as the edits are made.

Now, that disclaimer is done. This Novella, was fun. The characters were fun. Loved that it is in the same universe as Rose's other Novella Under My Bed.

Just have fun with it.
