A Measure of Faith

Rate this book
Lynette and her husband, Robert, had come a long way since they first met twenty-one years ago. Together they had constructed a beautiful house - and made two beautiful children - in Robert's home state of Georgia.
Lynette's happiness was a wonderful gift after a lonely, motherless childhood. But now, just two weeks from her fortieth birthday, Lynette has received distressing news from her doctor - and for the first time in a long time - she feels deeply unhappy, indignant and disappointed. She's always tried to be a good person. Why is something bad happening to her?
Robert knows that if his wife ever needed his understanding and support, it's now. And he is determined to give it to her.
He wishes he could heal her sorrow, but knows only the power of faith can and will do that. And sure enough, just as Lynette worries she may be losing something vital, she finds something even more important - something she's been longing for all of her life. Now, if only she can crumble the wall of doubt in her heart and let the joy come through.

Maxine Billings is a native of Villa Rica, GA. She now lives in Temple, GA with her husband Tony and their children Natasha and Stefan.

Maxine has enjoyed reading and writing as far back as she can remember. During her summer vacations from school, she participated in the reading program at the local library and spent most of her time reading. She also likes to write poetry. In the tenth grade, one of her poems was published in a school anthology. She liked writing so much that she always wrote more on writing assignments than what the teacher required. One of her cousins used to tease her profusely because she always wrote so much when he only wrote what the class was told and got the same grade as her, an A. When he found out that she had become a published author, he told her that he was glad all that writing she used to do finally paid off.

Maxine loves to read and write wholesome stories that inspire people in positive ways and give them hope. When she isn't writing, she loves spending time in spiritual activities and with her family. She also likes to dance, listen to Jazz and R & B, and do container gardening.

Lynette and Robert have been together for over twenty years. Their marriage is a good one until Lynette discovers she has fibroid tumors and needs a hysterectomy. Things start to go downhill. Lynette comes in contact with an old friend, who Lynette allows to disrupt her marriage. Simone persuades Lynette to start hanging out and once it starts, Lynette and Robert begin having problems. Lynette has also never known her mother, who left her when she was a little girl. Lynette has an interior decorating/construction business and she meets an older woman named arose, who is building a home for underprivileged children. Lynette and her family become very close to Rose and in fact Rose becomes a part of their family. As it turns out, Rose is Lynette's mother. Rose has been trying to tell her for sometime, but cannot get up the courage, and one day while Lynette is visiting Rose, she's asked to go and find something for Rose and that is when she finds out that the woman she has grown to love, is in fact the mother she has been longing for for so long. It takes a while for Lynette to come to grips with the information, as can be expected Lynette is very upset. In the end, she learns the power of forgiveness and the true meaning of love, and welcomes her mother into her life. Read March 2014

My first reaction within the first few pages was to snatch Lynette bald-headed. I had to put the book down because initially I found the character to be shallow, vain, ungrateful, and most irritating of all, whiny.

I gave it about a week and then resolutely I picked the book up again and read it to the end. The book made me think. How many of us base our identity on superficiality? The most important part of our lives is our relationship with the Almighty. If we are secure in our beliefs, then we are secure in our identity.

Trust in her beliefs was the issue for Lynette. Her doubt and mistrust dragged her and her family down. Once she figured out the point, her whole life turned around. Something I can certainly identify with.

The book was a learning experience. Can't ask for more than that.

I won the book on Goodreads First Reads.

A first reads book.

I honestly wanted to smack some sense into Lynette. I mean, in a loving way, the way good friends would. She has a wonderful husband who tries to shake her from her mopey attitude, a good friend named Rose who encourages her through her minor medical issues, people at her church pray for her, and she still prefers to see the glass half empty. Top it off, a long lost friend comes along who is jaded from a recent divorce decides to meddle in their marriage.

Overall, a very good read especially for a first novel from Maxine Billings.
