Rate this book

Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.

Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Probably the best children’s comic I’ve read in my live. I loved the soft realism of the family and friendship dynamics, great dialogues and the Frenchness of it all. Boys and girls wearing glasses are also always a great advantage for me.

Originally published in France, this series of the character named Ariol is fun, and simple, and every-day-life-ish. The illustrations of Ariol with his giant eyes behind his glasses make the reading of the book wacky, but the vignettes are about the very basics of living life--saying goodbye to friends, eating dinner, being at school. The characters unfold very slowly, and naturally, and it's just fun, easy reading...

My nine-year-old has gobbled all of these books up in an instant, and is excited for the next release.

Bizzbilla is a fly who has a giant crush on Ariol. He doesn't know though as he has a crush on a cow named Petula. Bizzbilla only appears twice in this collection, and stars in both stories, but that was a little disappointing as I thought with the title and all she'd be featured throughout. Otherwise, what can I say. A thoroughly delightful collection of stories about everybody's favourite blue donkey and all his anthropomorphic friends and family. I just love Ariol!
