Smuggler's Hideaway #1

Before It Was Love

Rate this book
The handyman is the sexiest man on the island. But I swear I didn’t answer the door in a towel on purpose. Especially since the handyman also happens to be my brother’s best friend.

In my defense, the hot water went out and I still had shampoo in my hair. I had no idea Flynn Ryland owned my apartment building, let alone that he’d answer my call when I rang for a handyman.

If I had, I probably would have rinsed my hair in the sink. Better to catch a cold than to catch feelings for Flynn again.

Because my brother’s best friend isn’t interested in me. He made that perfectly clear to the entire island when he told everyone I tried to seduce him at my high school graduation.

And yet who do I end up living with when it turns out the plumbing in my new apartment needs to be replaced?

Flynn freaking Ryland. The man who defines temptation with his wavy brown hair and ocean blue eyes I want to drown in. The man whose shoulder muscles look strong enough to lift me up and push me against the nearest wall.

Also, the man who won’t touch me because he doesn’t want to disrespect my brother, the only family he has left.

But what if my brother doesn’t find out? What if we keep this thing brewing between us a secret?

No one has to know…

This brother’s best friend, forced proximity, small town romantic comedy features a woman who is out to prove she’s worth fighting for, a man who can’t resist the temptation of his best friend’s little sister no matter how wrong he knows it is, a seal that doesn’t know it’s not a traffic stop, too many mermaid legends to mention, and a group of girlfriends who are considering a career change from brewery owners to matchmakers.

Before It Was Love is a standalone novel in the Smuggler’s Hideaway series.

Before It Was Love – Sophia and Flynn’s story
After The Vows – Chloe and Lucas’ story
While We Waited – Nova and Hudson’s story
All Along – Maya and Caleb’s story

When I learnt that this book would be about brother's best friend and childhood-friends-turned-lovers, I jumped into it immediately. The beginning was really great with lovable protagonists and setting; however, I had no clue what happened to the second half of the book. It was like the last 50% was written by someone else, a doppelgänger of the author, perhaps? I didn't know what was going on to the characters, especially when the female main character, Sophia, all of a sudden acted all silly and lacked common sense. For example, she literally deemed a police station as her playground, where she was eager to be handcuffed, interrogated, and "experienced" the whole being-treated-like-a-criminal thing. What's worse, I also noticed something I had never ever paid much attention to while reading before: what the characters drank in the story. Everyone apparently only drank beer, moonshine, and alcohol in this book. They clearly had a drinking problem, folks. Not that it mattered that much since this was just a fictional story, but still, just because Sophia and her besties owned a brewery, didn't mean all they could or should drink was something alcoholic. Besides, it did give small towns bad vibes. Anyways, all I was saying was that I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this book but the second half ruined it for me, unfortunately. Wish I could love this book more so at least I'd be tempted enough to continue with the rest of the series. But now, that simply wasn't happening.

***Thanks to the author and Hambright PR for the e-copy in exchange for an honest review.***

A second chance neither thought would ever come to pass

Before It Was Love (Smuggler's Hideaway Book 1) by D.E. Haggerty is the newest romantic comedy series by this author. And if you ask me outright if it's good, I'll tell you she hit it out of the park with Flynn and Sophie. Their second chance, while stacked with comedy, heals some long time hurts too. Misunderstandings are put to rights and the original antagonist changes his tune in the present.
I am really enjoying this new setting, Smuggler's Hideaway. It's quirky in its own unique ways and the myriad of paths future character stories can take is bound to keep this author's reader fans captivated and panting after the next book.
Finn and Sophie steam things up, and as in all small towns, everyone knows everything, even if they don't let on right away. In fact, the locals are half the fun of this romantic comedy, not the least of which is Sophie's best friends and business partners. I have a feeling we'll be learning a lot more about Five Fathoms Brewery.
Overall, while Finn bungles things up (with some help from his best friend and Sophie's older brother), he turns it around (Sophie's brother, too) with an awesome grand gesture that the whole town witnesses of course. Even better, most of the town is in on the plan! It's all kinds of fun beginning to end as well as the must have HEA.

Sophie and Flynn were childhood friends…until the incident. Sophie left town feeling humiliated. Years later she is back and when her apartment hot water heater breaks, she is surprised to find out Flynn owns the building…

Sophie and Flynn have great chemistry and I loved the tension between them. This is a slow burn and these two have some history they need to work through. No spoilers here, but I do love a grand gesture!!

I really loved the banter and small town shenanigans. There is an incident involving a raccoon…well, you’ll have to read it to find out the details. The mermaid pirate references made me smile. Sophie’s friend group is great and I liked the quirky side characters too!

✨ Before it Was Love ✨

Before it Was Love is the first book in her Smuggler’s Hideaway Series. Get ready for mermaid puns, an adorable seal, lots of dirty talk, and the grand gesture of all grand gestures.

Flynn is Sophia's brother's best friend and the local hot handyman. When Sophia moved back into town and has a plumbing issue at her rental, she needs a place to live. When Flynn offers up his place, the attraction becomes impossible to ignore. This book is really fun and I enjoyed all the small town antics and the girl gang. I was pretty frustrated with Flynn for most of the book and he never completely won me over. I did love the grand gesture at the end though!

I think you'll enjoy this book if you want:

The first in the new Smuggler’s Hideaway series is Sophia and Flynn's story and it was so much fun.
Ms. Haggerty always brings the laughs with her stories, but the banter in this between the girl gang was on point, and between Sophia and Flynn, downright hilarious.
Smuggler’s Hideaway is an island, so this has all the small town feels about it, everyone knows everyone else's business and Sophia and Flynn thinking they were keeping their relationship quiet, was not happening, the eventual confrontation with her brother, his best friend, and her father, who took him in as a troubled teen after the death of his mother and abandonment by his father, was inevitable and caused a moment of drama before a fun grand gesture patches things up.
I liked Sophia's group of girlfriends, we got to know them and their distinct personalities throughout the course of this story. I liked how they had each other's backs and I'm looking forward to reading each of their stories as the series progresses.
Very enjoyable!

Sophia returns home to Smugglers Hideaway, after leaving her job in Atlanta.

She and her four friends own a brewery on the island, and she is starting a job as Marketing manager for their brand.

She also needs somewhere to live, not wanting to move in with her parents, or brother.

She ends up living in an apartment owned by her long time love, Flynn, who has kept his distance from her since their school days, after being warned off by her brother, Weston.

I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This is Sophie and Flynn’s story, with a lot of angst on both parts, and hilarious moments of drunkenness, with a lot of help from her friends.

She and Flynn face challenges, but will they ever face up to the truth regarding their relationship?

I loved this story, which is easy to read, with a host of characters that will draw you in, and make you laugh.

Sophia was way too desperate for me. The girl’s been throwing herself at Flynn for a decade. She’s a sure thing and he can get away with whatever he wants.
Flynn put up no chase and no effort. He was definitely making her a secret. But again - BECAUSE HE COULD! Sophia didn’t require anything of him.

I think I loved every single character in this book. Sophia and all of her friends had me laughing hard so many times. Talk about goals! I want them as my friends. Even her family and the other townies were lovely. This author made me want to just dive into the story and stay.

Flynn was such a delight. I loved the shenanigans the mayor's office pulled just to get his attention. Being the town's handy man and voted sexiest bachelor for five years in a row sure makes life hard on a guy. 🤣

There were parts where I wanted to shake Flynn and kick Weston. Sophia made my heart hurt over Flynn. To have fallen for a guy as a kid and them always brush you off, ouch.

Weston....once I figured out why he was acting like he was, I no longer wanted to kick him.

🤌🏽Lines I loved:

"But what a wonderful romance it would be. The woman finally captures the man she's always loved. I'd read that book."

"I'm not a killer but if anyone hurts you, I will hurt them back." {Le sigh}

"In a world full of fish, be a mermaid."

"If you're lucky, you'll find the one person who will drive you crazy for the rest of your life."

"I should have stayed home with a book."

"Shortcuts in life never save time or money."

This was a cute read that reminded me a lot of This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune. The small town vibes, mermaid lore, pirates, and prohibition smugglers had me interested from the very beginning, then the cast of side characters hooked me. Especially that foreshadow for book two!

The only aspect that read a little off to me was the word repetition, it made some of the dialogue feel forced instead of natural during more intimate scenes.

I'm so glad I got a copy of this from DE Haggerty and Hambright PR prior to book five's release so I have time to catch up on them all!

3 staes only because the women are funny

He chuckles. “You always were prone to exaggeration"

Says the guy who exaggerated about a poor young girl's innocent kiss. Why do authors write hypocrites and not have people call them out?
Not sure I'll read more than this. It's over double the pages as the last book, I read and the repetitiveness is already bothering me at 20 pages in (that includes title pages and stuff lol)

#I open my mouth to ask her old she is – adults shouldn’t use the word gross"
First, I'm 54 and use the word gross
Second, all the 35 year old Characters in her books are immature so..........

Flynn is the wishiest washiest character I've ever read.

“The truth is I don’t consider you my little sister. The truth is I want to strip you bare and f..k you until you forget your name.”

I really wanted to love the story, and while there were elements I enjoyed, I found myself agreeing with some other reviewers on a few points. The portrayal of the women felt a bit too focused on desperation, including the heroine. The town council's silliness was amusing, but the humor fell flat for me once the women at the bar were introduced—it felt more shaming than funny. I think the story would have been even stronger without that aspect. A prologue showing the actual kiss might have added more depth and connection to the plot. While I understood the hero’s hesitation due to his past, I found myself wishing the heroine showed more strength in her interactions with him. It would have been great to see the hero fight for her and really work to win her over.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Flynn & Sophie- this is a brother's best friend romance and it is cute and funny at it's cute. There's a definite connection between the main characters and they are scorching together. While I liked the story, I felt the author was very repetitive at times. It got to be a little annoying. For me, this is a good book when you want to kill time but I probably wouldn't remember it later on to know that there's another book coming out following one of Sophie's friends.

Start of a new series

„Before it Was Love“ is the first romance novel in a new series. D.E. Haggerty is a talented and creative writer and there are always some funny new elements in her stories to be found.

She is using several tropes at the same time here, as are the classical „brother’s best friend“, „forced proximity“ and „small town romance“.

After being badly played by an evil workmate and the resulting disappointment about an unfair decision regarding a promotion at her place of work in Atlanta Sophia has no other options left and decides to return home.

Home is an island called Smugglers Hideaway, where not only her whole family is living but also her four best longterm girlfriends, from them I suppose, we will learn more about in the following parts of the series.

Several years earlier, before Sophia left to pursue her career in Atlanta, the group of girlfriends founded a brewery called „Five Fathoms“, that now ist starting to get more and more successful, which is also a good reason why Sophia returns to the island. Her abilities in working marketing are urgently needed at the brewery.

Because Sophia is not so keen on returning to living at her parents she is happy to move into a small rental apartment. Shortly after moving in a big water damage occures and when the handy man appears to repair the damage it’s Flynn, her former secret crush/turned enemy from her teenage years and also her brother’s best friend. Unfortunately he can’t finish the repair job, because of some special parts needed that are not available right now.

It’s main tourist season on the island and therefore there are no other rentals available. Flynn offers her to stay at his house until the repair will be done. At first Sophia is not ready to accept the invite and tries to find a better solution for her living situation, but finally has to accept Finn’s offer. As you can imagine, sparks of attraction between those two start flying around soon, but I will stop just here and let you read for yourself how the story goes on.

I found the male MC Flynn a lovely one, who I am sure will gain the readers sympathy very soon. Sophia however is something else. At age thirty she is still missing real adult behavior, and that makes it sometimes difficult to feel sympathy for her.

In my opinion other characters in this novel, for example her family, behave also often over the top and sometimes rather weird. I couldn’t think about their actions as funny, as they perhaps were meant to be. This seems to be a bit of a signature move of the author, who creates these kind of "over the top characters" also in her other books.

Another point which I thought about as a rather difficult topic, was the drinking habit of Sophia and her group of friends. Ok, they own a brewery, and it’s only logical to expect beer drinking situations. But during the whole novel there were a lot of other alcoholic beverages involved, followed up by hang over situations.

Great however was the description of the consequences of childhood trauma and how those still can influence an adult person’s self-confidence and how both main characters learn to overcome their individual obstacles from he past.

I also enjoyed the special running gag of his story, which has to do with a seal named Sally.

Finally I have to mention the brother’s best friend trope, where Sophia’s brother acted as cliché as possible. Sometimes I think, this special trope should never be written again by any author, because it’s so old-school and doesn’t shed a positive light on the personalities of adult brothers.

I received a free ARC of this novel and I wrote this review voluntarily.

This is Flynn and Sophia’s story. This is a cute rom com. Flynn has been her brother Weston’s best friend forever, and basically part of the family since his mom died and his dad took off.

Sophia has had a crush on Flynn since she was 11. On her graduation day she kissed Flynn and then found out the whole island thought she threw herself at him and was rejected. She moved to the mainland to escape. Over a decade later when she was 30 circumstances forced her to move back to the island.

Upon seeing Flynn she realized her crush was still as potent as ever. Turns out he owns the apartment building her apartment is in. Her shower doesn’t have hot water. He tells her the whole bathroom will have to be gutted and started over. Needless to say she ends up having to live in his guest room while he guts her bathroom.

Then they attempt to steal a neighboring towns pet raccoon and end up arrested. Her brother Weston is the officer in charge and he is none too happy on discovering Sophia and Flynn’s antics and worst than happy discovering their relationship.

Everyone is up in arms and Sophia is devastated….once again.

Read the book to find out if Flynn is able to give up the only true family he has ever had for Sophia or if she once again will be rejected.

Let me preface this by saying that I really, really enjoyed reading this book.

But…. Flynn got on my damn nerves!

Is it bad if I say that I really didn’t like him?

“I don’t need to hear it again. The first time you explained how you will always consider me a little sister is already tattooed on my brain.”

I mean, who says they want someone but won’t because her brother is his best friend… Then has the hide to allow rumours to spread about her because of said brother… He was an adult at the time this occurred, so there are no excuses…

“Congratulations, you don’t like what women do. You can join the group of misogynist pigs in the morning. They have their own merchandising these days.”

I was raging at him - he’s not going to approach her, but no one else is allowed to go near her? Is she meant to be a nun??!

Reminiscing about his father…

"How wonderful it must be to have a woman you love and cherish after several decades. My dad didn’t cherish Mom. He practically ignored her when she was alive. He was always hanging out at the bars and hitting on tourists while Mom stayed home and raised me."

Hate to break it to you… but you’re doing the same thing to Sophia…

And frankly, not keen on Weston either… he’s a horrible brother.

“I can’t listen to him say I’m a mistake again. I want a man to fight for me.”

Considering my feelings for Flynn, I was really happy that this book had a strong focus on her relationships with her friends… they were inappropriate, hilarious and downright fun. And as misery loves company, the sharing of their ‘relationship’ woes made me giggle with what they got up to.

Great setup for the new stories too!

“I love you, Flynn, but I don’t like you very much right now.”

Do I believe his love?? I’m not sure.

Considering he had to get the approval of Weston and her dad… maybe not so much…

Where do I even begin? I am obsessed with Before It Was Love! This book completely swept me off my feet, and I can't even begin to express how much I loved it. Let’s talk about the basics: it's a brother's best friend romance, and you just know that’s going to lead to all kinds of forbidden chemistry. But D.E. Haggerty took it to another level with Flynn and Sophia's story, and I am HERE for it!
Flynn quickly skyrocketed to the top of my list of book boyfriends. He’s broody, sweet, and just the right amount of tortured. He’s the kind of guy who would do anything for the people he loves but has a hard time admitting just how much he cares. And then there’s Sophia—his best friend’s little sister—who has been carrying a torch for him for as long as she can remember. Their chemistry is insane, and the way they both fight their connection is incredibly frustrating (in the best way). Flynn’s fear of losing the only family he’s ever known and Sophia’s fear of rejection had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!
As the story unfolds, Flynn and Sophia are forced together by living situations, and what starts as an awkward rekindling of their friendship quickly evolves into a reawakened intimacy that feels so raw and real. The slow burn was chef's kiss—it built up so perfectly, and when the spicy moments finally hit, they were worth every bit of the tension. Trust me, I was fanning myself more than once.
There were moments where I was literally heartbroken for Sophia as she grappled with her self-worth, and let’s just say, I was screaming at Flynn to get his head together during certain drunk poker nights. (Come on, Flynn, have a serious conversation for once!) But honestly, those emotional ups and downs made the payoff even better. And the banter—the banter—between these two was just delightful. It was flirty, funny, and added a layer of lightness that balanced out the deeper moments.
The ending? Perfection. It was everything I wanted and more, leaving me with that warm, fuzzy feeling and the kind of book hangover that only the best romances can create. If you're looking for a romance that combines forbidden love, hilarious one-liners, heartache, and the most sizzling chemistry, Before It Was Love is an absolute must-read.
A huge thank you to D.E. Haggerty and Hambright PR for giving me the opportunity to read this beautiful, emotional, and absolutely unputdownable book. I’m already craving the next book in the series, and I can’t wait to jump in yesterday.

We have a new series!!!!

We get the intro to this series in the novella Upon First Glance which features Jack and Lily on the island of Smuggler's Hideaway. Like in previous books the location becomes just as much of a character as the people.

Fast forward to Before It Was Love and now we get the story of their daughter Sophia. Sophia has recently moved back to the island after living in Atlanta but has recently left her job due to co-workers claiming her work as their own. She feels like a failure but is determined to get back on her feet. In addition to her work in Atlanta she is also part owner of a brewery on the island that she runs with her best friends.

Since she was a kid, she's had a crush on her brother's best friend Flynn. Flynn became part of the family after his Mom died and his father took off. Flynn has also been attracted to Sophia for some time but is worried about saying anything for fear of losing Sophia's brother Weston who is like a brother to Flynn. He's also afraid of losing the family in general which would leave him all alone.

Insert a broken bathroom in Sophia's rental and now she's staying with Flynn temporarily while repairs are made. Close proximity and moments alone are hard to resist for these two.

These two are so cute while they try to figure out if they can and want to pursue this attraction and Sophia's brother and group of friends are both hilarious and frustrating at the same time.

I loved this book and I'm so excited for this series to develop!

BEFORE IT WAS LOVE By D.E. Haggerty

😊What i liked -

✔ Forced Proximity/Rom-Com/Small Town/Brothers Best Friend/Found Family.
✔ If there is an author who knows how to write a good rom-com, nosey small town story then it is Haggerty.
✔ Though I am having major Gossip Gals withdrawals, I got a good replacement for those gals in this book.
✔ Loved how the person Sophia wants to avoid, she just can't seem to.
✔ It was hilarious how Flynn keeps trying to avoid the Attraction but just couldn't seem to.
✔ This book was hilarious, quirky and spicy.

🤔What could have been better-

✔ There was a time in the book when I was screaming okay now stop the avoidance.

📚Who Should read :
👶Beginners
💝Romance Lover
💕Brothers Best Friend Romance
💞Forced Proximity Romance

Brother's bff H got a hard on for h, so he screws all women except her, of course avoiding blondes because it reminds him of her. He's got all women throwing themselves at him but he only wants her and that is only because she's back after a decade. Not because H got tired of being a hoe

Yk, what pissed me off more ? The casual slut shaming and shaming women in general is wild in this book. H's thoughts - Their smiles are predatory, their boobs are fake, and I want nothing to do with them.
“The blonde is mine.”
Good. Because I can’t touch blonde women. Not when every blonde reminds me of Sophia

Mind you it's the same type of women he's been with all the time. Suddenly after seeing h, they all are fake 🤡🤡🤡

She stays in her brother's house and finds a naked woman in his house and goes Listen, fake tits. You can have him. I don’t want him (why the fuck would you want your brother like that 🥴). Proceeds to shame the her more after physically assaulting her by pushing her down Did they use your brain matter to fill your breasts?

The term 'fake' 'fake tits' keeps getting repeated again and again and h is getting congratulated for hitting the poor woman 💀💀

This is the first book in series, most likely the hoe of a brother also gets a book, the same man who tossed this woman naked out of his house after sleeping with her because that's how she showed up. What a true gentleman 🫠🫠

All this in the first 19% only, honestly all characters seem horrible so far.

So, i forced myself to finish it and H was somewhat redeemable but my god, h was insufferable. She's 30 years old but acts as a petulant teenager throwing tantrums 🙄🙄

D.E. Haggerty's Before It Was Love is an irresistible romantic comedy that perfectly blends tension, humor, and heart. The story follows a hilarious, heartwarming, and steamy slow burn between Flynn, the sexiest handyman on the island and Sophia who can’t help but fall for him—despite his "no dating my best friend's sister" rule. Set in a charming small town where mermaid legends add a touch of whimsy, this standalone novel delivers both swoon-worthy moments and laugh-out-loud dialogue. With forced proximity as its backbone—especially when the two are forced to live together during a plumbing fiasco—the chemistry between Flynn and Sophia is electric and impossible to resist. The "brother's best friend" trope is expertly executed, with Flynn’s internal struggle and Sophia’s humorous attempts to navigate the past adding richness to the plot.
Beyond the romance, the group of girlfriends brings much-needed lightness and support to Sophia’s journey, with each woman offering both laughter and sage advice. Flynn, with his ocean blue eyes and broad shoulders, makes for the perfect hero who is both tough and tender, refusing to cross boundaries for the sake of his best friend. As the tension between them builds, the small-town setting becomes a cozy backdrop for their sizzling connection. The tension escalates into an unforgettable conclusion, reminding us why we adore these kinds of forbidden romances. Before It Was Love is a delightful story about second chances, forbidden attraction, and the magic of a small town—and it will definitely leave you with a smile on your face and a heart full of hope.

Great start to a new series by D.E.Haggerty.
Sophia Milton returns to Smugglers Rest, a small town on the small island of Smugglers Hideaway, she reluctantly returns with her tail between her legs, furious at her ex boss in Atlanta for believing his lying nephew over her.
It was ten years since Sophia jumped ship and moved to Atlanta, she was mortified when the boy that she had crushed on since she was a small girl told the whole town that she had come on to him, she was so humiliated that her only option was to leave town but the distance and time hadn't made her forget ruggedly handsome Flynn Ryland.
Flynn's mother had died when he was a small boy and his father had deserted him but he had been saved from a life of trouble by the Milton family........Sophia's family. Sophia's parents treated him like a son, Weston, Sophia's brother was his best friend, he couldn't betray them by admitting that he had always had feelings for Sophia, how will he manage to supress those feelings now that Sophia was back in town, he couldn't loose his best friend and the only family that he had ever known, was he strong enough to fight for Sophia ?
This story follows the witty, often bumpy journey that Sophia and Flynn travel to reach their HEA, the four fabulous, scheming friends, the nosy neighbours, the drunk poker, the moonshine tots, the pirates and mermaids and not forgetting Sammy the seal.
A lighthearted romcom that will have you wanting to bang their heads together in frustration but will make you smile.

Before It Was Love by D.E. Haggerty is a fun, angsty, and small-town romance packed with sizzling tension and great banter. Sophia is back home in Smuggler’s Hideaway after leaving her job in Atlanta, ready to take on her role as marketing manager for the brewery she co-owns with her four best friends. What she’s not ready for? Living under the same roof as Flynn—the man she’s had feelings for forever, her brother’s best friend, and the one person who’s always kept her at arm’s length.
Flynn has his reasons for staying away. He owes everything to Sophia’s family—especially her brother, Weston, his best friend, and her dad, who took him in and taught him how to be a good man. But that doesn’t make resisting Sophia any easier, especially when their forced proximity keeps throwing them together in ways that make avoiding their feelings impossible.
This book delivers a great mix of slow-burn romance, humor, and small-town antics. Sophia’s friend group is gold—the kind of ride-or-die crew every woman needs in her life. And the town itself, with its pirate-themed shenanigans and nosy but well-meaning locals, adds so much charm to the story. The tension between Sophia and Flynn is just right—frustrating in the best way—and watching them navigate their history, their feelings, and all the obstacles in their way makes for a fantastic read.
If you love brother’s best friend tropes, small-town romance with personality, and a story that balances humor and heart, this one’s for you!

Before It Was Love { Smuggler’s Hideaway #1 }
By D.E. Haggerty
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m one that makes the decision to read a book by what the cover looks like. And in this case, I was all for the lovely cover this book has and the story did not disappoint! Smuggler’s Hideaway is a small island where everyone knows everyone and all their business. So when Sophia left after high school because she felt embarrassed by what happened in her past, she never thought she would be going back. But here she is back on the island to live. Here comes Flynn, her long time love. Flynn is her brother’s best friend and he actually thought of their family as his own family. When Sophia needs somewhere to live she refuses to live with her parents, she ends up living in an apartment Flynn owns. Shortly into her return, the bathroom needs to be gutted resulting into her becoming Flynn’s roommate. Their attraction becomes impossible to ignore!

This book so much fun with the mermaid puns, a great group of girl friends who own a brewery, lots of dirty talk, and a grand gesture that was just perfect!

You’ll enjoy this book if you like:
* Standalone
* Brother’s Best Friend
* Forced Proximity
* Small Town
* Romantic Comedy
* Group of Girlfriends
* Mermaid Legends

Before It Was Love is one of those books that sneaks up on you. I went in expecting light and fluffy, and while it is funny and sweet, there's more emotional weight here than I anticipated- and that’s what made it stand out to me.

Flynn and Sophia’s history is messy in the best way. There's this unresolved tension that bubbles under every interaction, and while the brother’s best friend trope isn’t new, Haggerty gives it enough emotion and character-driven conflict to keep it from feeling recycled. Flynn is frustratingly noble, and Sophia- she’s trying so hard to hold herself together while everything around her is shifting. It just works.

The slow burn was slow, like… glacial at times. But when the heat hits, it hits. Their chemistry is fantastic, and the payoff was satisfying even if I wanted just a little more resolution at the end.

Sophia’s friend group was a highlight- fun, chaotic, and real. Their scenes brought a lot of personality and grounded Sophia’s emotional arc. The brewery aspect gave the story a unique backdrop, though I wish it had been a little more developed. Still, the writing is sharp, and the dialogue is genuinely funny- especially the scenes involving the infamous seal (yes, the seal).

Overall, this is a warm, charming, and occasionally angsty romance with great banter, strong tension, and a lovable cast. I’d absolutely recommend it and I’m already curious who gets their story next.

Whenever I pick up a book by DE Haggerty, I know it's going to be AMAZING – and Before It Was Love was just THAT!

Sophia and Flynn? I’m obsessed with them! 🫶

From the first chapter, you feel Sophia's struggle to return home and prove herself. And Flynn? He’s been low-key head over heels for her for ages – even though she had no clue. Like NONE. The island vibes and Sophia’s ride-or-die friend group just added to the whole vibe.

Now let’s talk about Sophia… I fcking LOVE her. She’s feisty, takes no sht, and speaks her mind, while Flynn? Total heartthrob. Loyal, swoon-worthy, and couldn’t stop thinking about her for a second. The tension, the spice, the banter? I was living for it. And I literally spat out my water how funny Sophia is!
And can we talk about Flynn’s past? His loyalty to her family, even with all the emotional baggage, made my heart MELT. The whole “best friend’s little sister” trope? Nailed it. Tension for days, but they match each other perfectly.

That HEA had me grinning from ear to ear! Why? Because Flynn finally fought for his girl.
Smuggler’s Hideaway and its quirky characters gave major found family vibes, which were the chef's kiss of the story. Seriously, if you’re looking for a spicy, hilarious, and heartfelt romance – this is IT.
10/10 recommend! 👏📖

A cute and easy heartfelt book.
Sophia returns home to Smugglers Hideaway after losing her job in Atlanta. She co-owns Five Fathoms Brewery with her best friends and is renting an apartment owned by her childhood crush, Flynn, who is also her brother’s best friend. Flynn broke her heart in high school and publicly humiliated her, prompting Sophia to avoid him at all costs ever since. However, when plumbing issues arise in her apartment, she has no choice but to move in with Flynn until the repairs are completed.

There isn’t much to say about this story, but it was a funny and cute read. Sophia had a crush on Flynn when they were younger, and he always had feelings for her too. However, he hesitated to act on his feelings because he didn’t want to jeopardize his relationship with her family because they had taken him in after his mother passed away and his ghosted him.

When Sophia started living with Flynn, the temptation became too strong, and he eventually gave in. But she refused to be his little kept secret. Their dynamic was quite entertaining, and I loved how direct she is with him. I also loved Sophia’s friend group; they welcomed her back to the island with open arms and supported her every step of the way.

What to expect:
* Rom Com
* Brother’s bestfriend
* Childhood friends to lovers
* Girl obsessed
* Close Proximity

Sophia returns home after losing her job in the most spectacular way—and because she promised her business partners she’d handle PR for their brewery. I instantly liked her circle of friends; they’re fun, supportive, and add a lot to the story.
Then there’s Flynn—the good-looking millionaire who practically owns the town… and clearly still owns Sophia’s heart. There’s definite history between them, and it’s complicated by the fact that Flynn is also her older brother’s best friend. If you enjoy small-town romances with a best friend’s little sister trope and a community full of nosy neighbors, this book checks all those boxes.
One thing I didn’t enjoy was how the Mayor and her group of friends treated Flynn. At first, the banter was lighthearted and funny, but it quickly crossed the line into inappropriate. Grown women acting like horny teenagers and repeatedly sexually harassing him just didn’t sit right with me—it felt unnecessary and detracted from the otherwise sweet love story. Oddly, they weren’t the only ones treating Flynn like a walking dessert, and that running theme got bizarre.
Despite that, the romance itself is strong, and the ending is especially satisfying—I’m a sucker for a happy ending. I’m giving this one four stars and definitely recommend it to small-town romance lovers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a fun and swoony small-town rom-com! Sophie and Flynn were childhood friends turned near-strangers after a messy misunderstanding that sent Sophie packing. Years later, she’s back on the island—and her sexy, brooding landlord just happens to be Flynn, her brother’s best friend and lifelong crush. 😏

The chemistry? 🔥 Instant. But this is a true slow burn with so much tension and history simmering beneath the surface. Sophie’s return stirs up the past, including that infamous graduation day kiss that humiliated her in front of the whole island. Now stuck living in Flynn’s house due to a busted hot water heater (hello, forced proximity), things start heating up in more ways than one…

I loved the banter, the mermaid-pirate legends woven into the setting, and the hilarious small-town antics—especially the chaotic raccoon incident (yes, there’s a raccoon heist 😂). The quirky friend group added even more charm, and Flynn’s internal conflict—torn between his loyalty to Sophie’s brother and his long-buried feelings—added emotional weight. The grand gesture at the end? Chef’s kiss.

My only (minor) critique is that some plot points resolved a little quickly, but overall, this was a heartwarming, funny, and delightfully offbeat rom-com with just enough depth to keep me hooked.

Tropes to love:
🏡 Small Town
💕 Brother’s Best Friend
🔥 Slow Burn
🚿 Forced Proximity
🧜‍♀️ Mermaid Legends
👯‍♀️ Group of Girlfriends
😂 Romantic Comedy

This book felt like coming home. Honestly, I was a little worried about feeling like that, too. Having read almost all of D E Haggerty's previous books, I didn't want to feel like I was reading Winter Falls all over again. Don't get me wrong, Winter Falls is one of my all-time favourite small town romance series. However, I wanted something fresh, new, and exciting for this new series. I am happy to report that D E Haggerty did not let me down!

In this story, we meet Sophia and Flynn. After a not so subtle rejection from Flynn in the past, Sophia knows it can never work between them. However, she ends up living with him after facing some plumbing issues at her place. Will they give into temptation? Can they make it work? Or will Flynn's fear of losing his only family, Sophia's brother, ruin their chance at love?

This was a good. I was hooked from the very first page, and like I mentioned earlier, it was like coming home. I honestly couldn't stop reading.

🦭 Small town
🦭 Brother's best friend
🦭 Second chance
🦭 Forced proximity
🦭 Best friends' sister
🦭 First person, dual POV
🦭 HEA

This story follows the bumps that Sophia and Flynn go through before finding their HEA. I really enjoyed the romance and spice. The four best, and scheming, friends, nosy neighbours, drunken poker, and of course, Sammy the seal. This story had a wonderful cast, and it was a pleasure to get to know them all.

This book has set up the rest of the series nicely. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series.
