"I haven’t always been a writer. My parents are writers and my brother is a writer, and I resisted that as long as I could. When I was 17, I hopped in a band’s van and I went on tour for a summer, and that was it, that was what I wanted to do. I ran a record label for 10 years, a small indie punk label. I did everything in music that you can do that doesn’t involve having musical ability. Eventually the music business, probably in a similar way to comics, will just start to break your heart, and I realized one day that I kind of hated music. I was resigned to thinking, if I’m going to be involved in music forever, I’m going to hate it for the rest of my life. I just stopped. I stopped having any sort of business with music, any involvement.
I read comics my whole life, so I just naturally fell back into another medium that is marginalized and hard to make a living in."
I didn’t see any ads for this series, so I was happily a surprised to see it on the shelf then disappointed to see #3, not thinking I’d be able to find 1-2, but shockingly, I found #1-3 on the shelf and got to buy them to catch up. I’ve only read #1 so far, but I’m so happy to be back in this world. This issue was excellent!! The ending is definitely surprising, and I’m excited to read #2.
What an insane start, this is not what I expected to find jumping into this at all. We left the last series off with so much hope, sure Barbara only took Dick’s place as the vampire queen but the heroes were getting their mojo and the SUN back…so what happened? We jump into this and find the world complacent, an unsteady peace treaty setup between the humans and vampires, and do you know why? Because the vampires folded. Victory was no longer assured and the humans had a chance, but we took the deal. Now there is so much uncertainty in the world. Staring 9 months ago, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner returned to Earth to find it afflicted by the vampires. Only to be immediately attacked by a group of heroes they once knew, the pair fought valiantly but Diana rushed in to kill Kyle. John almost got away, but elongated man stretched up like a giant snake to bring him back down. Fortunately this only left it open for John to rip Ralph apart from the inside, but the hordes of vampires eventually over powered him as well…leaving a ring looking for a new host. While this does further make me question what will happen to Kyle’s ring and where Hal’s ring ever ended up, we venture from this intro to the present day as we find a group of very nazi looking vampires (because that fashion is all the rage these days) as they lead a convoy…only to find a tree blocking their path. This is a deliberate ambush point setup by Damian and his horde of vampires all dressed as Hush. They are no longer taking prisoners and only leave only alive to go back to Barbara with a message carved into his head with holy water. But this is not the same Damian fighting for the side of humanity we left off, they are a lot more ruthless and they fight specifically against the Queen. As they go to the back of the trucks Damian opens them to reveal their cargo…live humans, which is in direct opposition to the treaty setup. But Damian isn’t here to free them, he only cares about crippling the queen’s reign. He leaves the humans to his horde, either as food or to be turned to grow his army.
We then venture to West Texas to find some of the last remaining humans all meeting. This group is made up of Oliver, Dinah, Lois Lane, Talia, and someone I think is Maxwell Lord? I’m too scared to look at the issue information and characters in case I get spoiled for a secret identity meant to be revealed later on. After all I was spoiled as Mera as black manta in the first series, lol. The group is waiting for the person who called this meeting and has finally arrived with a guest, none other than Constantine and his undead diplomatic envoy…Gorilla Grodd. The other humans are not pleased to see Grodd, especially as Constantine didn’t let them know before hand, but John is still desperately trying to maintain the peace and Grodd comes with a request from the Queen…deal with Damian Wayne, his transgressions must be stopped, or they will deal with him. Lois points out the obvious, Damian is a vampire and the truce is not setup between people who hate the Queen and who don’t…it’s setup between humans and vampires, and he isn’t one of theirs. The threat of dealing with Damian themselves is not unmet by Talia’s fury, as John once again has to step in to ease tensions as Gross leaves. John sees their point, Damian’s actions could push them into war…but Ollie doesn’t see that as such a bad thing. Ollie points out that the only reason they could have agreed to this truce is if they are scared of the humans.
We then jump over to New Jersey where w group of hungry vampires are hunting a human. He slips down an alleyway only to disappear completely, the vampires are astonished to find him in the roof and quickly corner him at the edge of a building. As they approach they suddenly find that the man has a baby wrapped up close in his arms. But as the vampires approach the man shifts and lets out his fangs, suddenly it’s all true…the legend. Now the vampires are even more amped up, the queen will reward them for his head and the little freak with him. But then one of theirs vampires erupts as a blade goes through his chest and none other than batman is standing behind him! This batman fully conceals his face to hide who he is and wears a yellow emblem, I cannot wait until the reveal who this badass is. He rips through the vampires and as the final one takes the man hostage…batman knocks him off the roof with a well placed throwing star as he saves the man with the baby from falling off the roof. Batman begins to inform him of where they can go for safety…bye as he turns around the man has already escaped and is no where to be seen. Even Batman is puzzled.
Checking back in either the humans, Ollie has gone outside for air to look up at the clear sky, thanks to Kara, and Dinah soon joins him. Dinah asks him for his thoughts and Ollie begins to explain how he thought it was all over a year ago, how he lost everyone including Dinah as he pushed her away. But the everything changed, sick was killed, they got the sun back, and he found a piece of hope that they could win…but then the treaty was struck up as John stood in front of the world to stop war…not win it, stop it and the impact of the is truly hitting Ollie tonight as he listened to a vampire gorilla tell them to kill the last person fighting back and everyone, but Talia of course, agrees. They all saw Grodd running scared, it could mean the kid is winning and they could as well. But no matter what, even if they fight and they wipe out all of humanity…Dinah will be right by Ollie’s side.
As the issue comes to a close we shift over to Gotham city to the Queen’s tower as Grodd and Aquaman brief the Queen on Grodd’s diplomatic mission. He doesn’t believe they are working with Damian but they will also not go after him. Barbara fears that if they drive the humans to Damian he will tell them what he found, John and the humans cannot find out about the human cattle they have been moving as it would be an act of war against their truce. Aquaman doesn’t see why that is an issue, and Barbara immediately blows up at him. Showing her fangs and grabbing him by the neck as his confidence they could actually win is misguided. Their strength only grows while the vampires falter. As Aquaman apologizes she lets him down and sends them both on their way as she walks out to the balcony to overlook the city. But then a voice calls from the darkness, it is one of Damian’s hush soldiers. He isn’t supposed to be here and her guards have now been overrun by a fleet of hush. Barbara immediately goes on the attack as she senses an attack on their queen…but he explains he is simply here to give a message from Damian: “Sic Semper Tyrannis.” With Barbara on top of this hush, he suddenly hits a trigger to set off his suicide vest. Bursting Barbara into a ball of flame as she is thrown from the building…if you go for the queen, you better not miss and that was an impressive hit.

The opening made me sad, but the vampires are a piece of shit. I also love Damien in this, lethal but not evil. And Green Arrow being the main good guy is amazing.
Sic semper tyrannis, muthafucka! The wait is finally over. Issue 1 of 12 of WWV and its a doozy of a beginning. We pick up after Kara cleared the sky. Humans and vamps have a truce, while Damian is attacking his own kind, with the help of Hush. An easy 5 stars, and roll on the next 1.
