John Constantine is in hell. Literally. Trapped without his friends or a way home, he’ll resort to what he’s done before…conning the legions of the underworld into setting him free. That is, unless he’s lost his touch…
I say it every issue, but this is a classic in the making. Spurrier is weaving together threads from across the 80s and 90s Vertigo line so masterfully and bringing them into the present via a biting social critique. If Hell is whatever one imagines, well, look around you.
Lisandro Estherren fills in beautifully on art, tying this book in with the Tynion’s Nightmare Country. It doesn’t seem like there are any more Sandman Universe books on the immediate horizon, but if this is the end, they’re going out with a goddamn bang.
This is just so incredibly good. The writing is far beyond any other comic I've read this year. The art is awesome. I chuckled when Swamp Thing showed up
"Justice... Punishment... Moral fuckin' right. It's all in the eye of the beholder, mate."
"Always me, never us. Blame instead of betterment. That's how the monsters stay in charge.
Liberty. Law. Leisure.
Empty promises pretendin' to be big dreams."
And with those 3 "Ls," we have John's eureka moment and the story starts to connect full circle. Really cool the way it's done. The social commentary that could not be more warranted. And even the demon Etrigan wasn't so bad and fit right in.
3.25 stars. Art style took a little getting used to, but was nevertheless very creative and interesting to look at. Some sharp, while very on the nose political commentary that was, in my opinion, very much appreciated. The story still feels a bit like it's dragging on for a little too long, but it always manages to draw you back in, so you wonder what happens next.
