The silverswords have held Tytan in an iron fist for centuries.
That fist has crushed the last hope for the continent.

After quitting mage training, fire mage Fig thought her dealings with the crown and the ruthless silverswords who rule Tytan were over. That is, until she’s summoned by her old friend, Prince Devryn Verrence. His father is dead, betrayed by the silversword enclave. And now Dev is on the run, a king without a throne.

They’ll need to escape Tytan on a quest for allies, because it won't just be the throne of Tytan they're fighting for... but the fate of the continent, and the freedom of mages everywhere.

Flames of Gold is book one in Legends of Gold and Silver, an epic fantasy series full of hopeful determination featuring a ragtag cast of mages, dwarves, dragonets and dryads in a sprawling saga of twisty politics, magic, and myth.

This book has everything I love about fantasy; great creatures, a well-built and well-lived in world, layered characters, shades of grey, HOPE, and pulse-racing adventure.

And Flames of Gold proves that Liz Delton is one of indie fantasy's most flexible and inventive writers. Honestly, she can do it all: from children's books to cosy to YA to Epic, Liz Delton has you covered, and she does it like she's been doing it all her life.

There's shades of the Witcher in Flames of Gold - Brandon Sanderson, too - but for people in this group, you need not look further than the wonderful JA Andrews for a touchstone in what to expect in Flames of Gold. Matters are a shade darker and greyer here than in Andrews' work, but there's the same commitment to lavish worldbuilding and storytelling.

It's a great start for a new series, and I'll be there day one for book two.

This is an exciting, fast-paced start to an epic fantasy series that hooked me from the start. Right away, I fell in love with the characters, especially Fig and Mairead. And let’s not forget about the adorable dragonet. He is delightful.

There’s rarely a dull moment. It’s action-packed, full of twists and surprises. I was genuinely surprised by many of the plot twists, which kept the stakes high and the tension strong. One thing that really stood out to me was the unique lore. The silverswords and the sisters were such fascinating and well-thought-out elements of the world.

Overall, Flames of Gold was an incredibly fun read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast-paced fantasy with unique magic systems, strong characters, and lots of action.

This is a solid entry level fantasy. Fun story. Action packed. For a long-time reader, though, this fell far short of the mark for me.

This book, for me, was screaming for another 40-70 pages of world-building, lore, and character motivation. With this, it would have hit like some of the later Shannara books. Without it, characters felt one dimensional and lacking life. Some dialogue, too, needed a defter hand and level of skill.

Again, great for a newer SFF read, but not for me. Heck of a cover though.

This was phenomenal!! The world building, the characters, Liz Delton knows how to create unique and eclectic people and creatures. You follow Fig, a fire mage, through harrowing escapes, meet silverswords who were ordinary warriors now bound to their weapons through magic. All while trying to save the recently unsurped Prince Dev, Fig's friend, that the current regime wants dead. This is definitely a page turner, keeps you on edge from beginning to end. Waiting very excitedly for the next book!!!

Let me just start with: AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! This book was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! It started out strong, but ended even stronger. I absolutely love the depth of the characters, especially with so many central characters! This is true epic fantasy! The friendships, the dragonette (I need one!), the absolutely perfect slow burn romance, the adventure, the betrayal, the fights, the magic, and all the feelings all throughout! I think this may be the first time I've ever almost cried over a broken weapon 😭. I just cannot praise this book enough, and I am heartbroken the next one isn't already out because I'm dying for it already! As much as I love Liz's other books, this one rocketed itself to the very top of my list.

I received this book as an ARC. It follows a FMC who has abandoned her “home” to live a free life. As we meet her former friend and begin our journey through the story, additional characters pop up and continue through the story.

At first, I was annoyed that more and more POVs were introduced, but realized that we really only get other POVs for their intro to the story. I both liked that (I don’t really enjoy multiple POVs) and disliked it (I don’t really think we need to have an intro into them like that if we aren’t going to get their side anymore).

I think that the story has an interesting premise but got lost in the details. A lot happened throughout the story and yet, at the same time, nothing was accomplished.

I don’t really like the FMC and the whiplash from her anger to self loathing and back. I think that there is a serious lacking in her history that needs to be delved in to, as well as Dev.

I will be picking up book 2 when it comes to see what happens next and hopefully get some additional insight into their histories.

What an enjoyable read. A bit of a slow start, but once it gets going, you can't stop. Fig is a Fire mage, living peacefully in the Auran forest, until an old friend who is on the run demands her help. Dev is the heir to the throne, but his father has just be killed in a coup and he is running for his life.

Fig is a brilliant character. Strong, determined and yet with a hint of insecurity. She has faults, but her journey to overcome them is wonderful to read. Her doubts that she is good enough is balanced by her determination to teach herself enough to protect her friends.

The little hints of a spark between Fig and Vaelor were great, and I look forward to that growing. Vaelor is a lovely character and as Fig says, is much deserving of happiness. I am so glad he took his chance.

A magical world full of interesting characters and twisty polictical conniving. The world is well developed, and all the political adversaries fall in well together. How Fig and Dev collect their rag tag group of companions is very well done, and they lurch from one catastrophe to the next. You don't get time to breathe, as anything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and unexpected twists keep you hooked. The story certainly keeps up the pace.

A very enjoyable epic fantasy with plenty more entertainiment yet to come.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This is my first Liz Delton book … and it certainly won’t be the last!

This is the story of a confident man forced to take the crown when his father is killed, but so many others have their own designs on the throne. He enlists help from friends old and new. By the end of the book, they’ve narrowly escaped traps, opponents who won’t stop coming for them, battles and their own problematic magic. None of them is as confident anymore.

There are two kinds of magic in this book … first is a useful elemental type (loved the paper mage). Second, an enigma-ridden, secretive silversword process that welds a weapon to its owner and gives them exceptional *something.* We run into both exceptional strength and hearing, so I imagine the options are wide.

The story here is the plotting and the obstacles that keep being thrown into the way of the travellers. Interesting places and people.

My only niggly critique is that the obstacles that pop up are a bit too well-timed; clear one hurdle, here comes the next bringing more chaos, and another new person to fit the group, or leave one behind. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle where pieces are jammed into place regardless of the exact fit, and other pieces simply yeeted.

Still, this book isn’t the whole story and I’d like to be there for the rest of it. The premise is interesting, the magic is intriguing, and Emrah is just as adorable as a sentient dragonet can be!

This book was just outstanding in all the best ways. We meet Fairaleigh, Fig as she chooses to be called, making a living as a mage out on her own away from the castle. She is met with a silversword demanding she meet with the king, who turns out to be her best childhood friend Dev. Now, the adventure is basically from page one, and the book was difficult to put down as I needed to see what happened next. We met a dragonette in the golden woods along with dwarves, and the author did a wonderful job describing the way the magic in this world worked and how the people interacted with it. The tension was palpable at many points in the book, as the three friends continued to try to get to a safe destination. They gather new friends along the way and yet still never know whom to trust. The hits just keep coming in the last half of the book and shocked me with the revelations. I'm excited to see what happens next and am only disappointed that I must wait.

Oh my…where do I begin?! This was one twisting, turning, completely spellbinding, magical, mystical, battle filled, dragonet bonding, sometimes sweet, a little angsty, but always captivating start to what is sure to become one hell of an epic fanatsy!

What is a mage to do? I mean…Fig wasn’t expecting to be forced out of the tavern by an unknown Silverword and forced into a mysterious carriage…but she really didn’t have any other choice. But what she discovers in that carriage will burn her entire world down and force her to make decisions…decisions that she wasn’t ready to make…decisions she never thought would be presented to her...decisions that would take everything she thought she knew and burn them to ash. And soon Fig finds herself on an adventure with the Prince that was once closer than a friend, trusting a ‘sword she didn’t know, all the while fleeing for her life, discovering new and interesting uses for her fire magic, making new friends she could have never anticipated, all the while trying to figure out how to protect and put the right King back on the thrown.

I love me a good epic tale. And Flames of Gold was the perfect first in series! There are just so so so many things I loved about this book.

First of all the world building is top notch! I haven’t read many books that had a swampy type main location but Delton wrote this one just right. From the various beings and creatures, to the vast and glorious descriptions, to the bits of vocabulary, I absolutely loved this aspect of the story.

Another thing that was oh so intriguing was the magic and lore. I loved the Silverswords and the Sisters of Morhga Lore. They were both just so unique and interesting and I love how they were both intrinsic to the story and to the kingdom. I also enjoyed how their lore was revealed to the reader throughout the book. It was just so well conceived and written!

And then there was the romance. Oh…the romance…I really enjoyed the romance. ALthough, it didn’t go the direction I thought it would…I was a bit surprised there…I decided I really really loved the direction it turned and am glad Delton wrote what she wrote. It was the road less traveled and I’m excited to follow where it leads!

So anyways…if you love epic and are looking for your next great epic story I highly recommend Flames of Gold! It has all the magic! All the world building! All the battles (and then some!)! Romance! Found Family! A mischievous familiar! And the most intriguing beginning that I cannot wait to read where it ends!

This is book 1 in the Legends of Gold and Silver series. We start by meeting Fig (Fairaleigh) who is a mage on her own. Normally mages stay in training indefinitely, but Fig didn't want to be "trapped". While waiting for a small job, she is pulled into a political mess when her friend, Prince Devryn - now King Devryn, asks for her help after his father is overthrown and killed. On the run for his life, they try to make their way to another kingdom to not only stay alive but look for more allies to help him take the throne back.
The world building in this book is wonderful! From the Gold Wood to the salt swamps, you can really imagine yourself there! And all the characters we meet along the way just add to the tale! Fig is independent but kind of spoiled at the same time. Yes she is on her own, but she has been sheltered from what a lot of others have had to deal with. Luckily, she finds Ziggy to help straighten her out! Dev is such a kindhearted person and you just root for him to get the throne back! And along the way, Fig ends up with (thought long gone) dragonet as a familiar! Emrah is just the cutest and I wish I had one!
There are more characters to ad into the mix, but I don't the review to get bogged down introducing everyone! But just know there are so many wonderful friends and some surprising enemies they find along the way! This is a world filled with magic, knights, swords and found family. There were a few surprises but they were big surprises! I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to see where the next book will take Fig, Dev and the rest of them!

Flames of Gold is an epic fantasy novel that shines. It's got the characters, the world and the narrative. It's got a tightly woven plot that stays together throughout. It's got a set of characters who come to life on the page in front of you. And the world is well built, with magic woven into every atom. And there's a romance, even if it isn't fully realised... we all know where this is heading. Much to my liking, it's a sub-plot rather than taking over the narrative.

We meet Fig pulled from a business meeting to the King. Prince Devryn, running from the coup that killed his father. And a dragonet, unknowingly bonded. Or at least, those are our central characters. One of the things I didn't like was how new characters were introduced; they got a point of view chapter and then were just amalgamated. Sometimes it was jarring, other times you wanted more from the character...

However, this excels in different ways. I fell in love with the characters, particularly Fig; she's both fragile and strong. She's also a headstrong idiot and I can empathise. The narrative is strong, although it's mostly our characters fleeing from the mayhem they have created. But there's more than a hint of a far larger narrative here and colour me intrigued. And the world building? That is excellent. You are missing a lot of details, but you can't help but imagine the world in your mind.

All in all, this is a strong novel. It didn't wow me, but it more than intrigued me. And I'm interested to see what happens next.

I had a lot of fun with this one! Pretty much what I want out of a high/epic fantasy romp.

Fig, a fire mage, gets unwittingly dragged into helping her old friend (the prince!) when a coup strikes, and makes her way across the country to escape and gather allies.

There's some great worldbuilding, I really enjoyed this intro to the world. I want to see more of the "unique" types of magic... while there are some really interesting things like paper magic, most of the main characters who have magic have less out-there abilities, like fire, wind, water magic....... but hey I'm a sucker for elemental magic, so I'm not going to complain. There's also a unique ritual that bonds someone to a weapon and gives them extra physical abilities depending on what kind of weapon they chose. It's a pretty cool concept!

This book feels a lot like it's in a "gathering the party" phase, so I'm really excited for book two and digging deeper into the plot and what happens next after the big reveals at the end of this one.
There's a touch of romance, which didn't happen between the characters I initially thought it would but I got on board. I'm interested to see how that develops as well as we didn't get too deep into that in Flames of Gold.

Overall, really looking forward to book 2 and seeing how this world and the characters develop!!

To say that I loved this book is an understatement. I have been raving about it for the last few months to anyone who would listen, as about as close to a perfect epic fantasy as you can get. At least, it is perfectly my tastes in epic fantasy.

When a coup takes out the king, the crown prince is next (being a mage instead of the preferred silversword), so he goes on the run. But Prince Dev needs someone he can count on to watch his back, so he sets out with his former flame, Fig - a fire mage - and the one silversword he can trust, Vaelor. Over the course of events, they are joined by a dragonet, dwarves (depending on who you ask), a Red Sister, dryads, and others who support their cause or simply have reason to flee along with them. The story jumps from place to place, showing the beautiful and treacherous geography of this new world that Liz has created. The story is absolutely gorgeous.

Also, you can't help being impressed with the breadth that Liz Delton shows, spanning from steampunk and cozy fantasy to epic fantasy. This is my favorite so far and I can't wait for more!

Disclaimer, I did edit this book, however, all the gushing over said book is from the heart and not solicited by the author in any way.

✨Blurb✨

The Kings of Tytan have been silverswords for centuries and keep the mages under their control at Carriage House, where they undergo everlasting training.

Prince Devryn (Dev) now King Devryn and his silversword protector, Vaelor are on the run the enclave of silverswords just killed his father the King, and attempted to kill him. He turns to his old friend Fairlaeigh (Fig) for help, she's a fire mage who left the Carriage House 2 years prior. The adventure begins as they plot how to retrieve Dev's throne after the silverswords took it and seated one of their own.

The world-building is legendary, peopled with dwarves, dryads, mages, knights, and the thought to be a myth dragonet. The landscape is in vivid detail from the golden forest to swampland. The action is non-stop, it's as if Murphy's Law has been enacted. They collect friends and enemies along the way, one will betray them and there is a shocking twist to be revealed.

My favorite part of the story aside from the spark finally igniting for a certain couple is the trip to Vaelor's old home and making peace with his grandmother.

This is what an Epic story should be, great job Liz Delton.

After the King is killed in a coup, Dev his son is on the run to gain allies. With him is a Silversword, Vaelor and a fire mage, Fig. On their journey, they find unlikely friends and help from different magical beings/races. There's also a lot of trouble and of course, they're being chased.

I love, love, love Emrah! He's the cutest magical companion/familiar I've ever read about 😍
The sassiness mixed with his courage made him my favorite member of this motley crew.

That there are Dryads in this book made it even better. I really love reading about them and they seldomly play a bigger part in most fantasy stories, but here you encounter Fenra, Vilvan, El (Fenra's brother) and some others from their gathering. They're great side characters with a lot of potential and I enjoyed their storylines a lot.

My favorite part was the final battle and the revelations during these chapters. I was actually surprised when I thought I already knew everything and the author dropped the bomb.

This is a great epic fantasy story with a little romance on the side😊

Oh, this was good! One of my favorite aspects of epic fantasy is good world-building and Liz Delton has a talent for it: although the story focuses on its (very likeable) characters, we get a good sense of the world: this is a world where mages are feared and controlled, rife with political turmoil and where magical creatures and beings live alongside more traditional fantasy races: we have humans and dwarves, and we also get a telepathic dragonet and dryads!

This is the story of Fig, a fire mage on the run, who finds herself aiding the heir to the throne Dev, when his father the King is murdered in a coup. Along for the ride we have Vaelor, a silversword (an enhanced warrior magically bound to his sword and my personal favorite character) and Mairead, a priestess/healer cast out from her people.

The characters really took this story to the next level – I was really invested in their adventures and relationships, and I’ll definitely be following them on to the next book, coming out in November!

A fascinating world to discover.

When Fig left her mage training in the Golden Wood, little did she know that she would be drawn into kingdom politics once again. With deposed King Dev and his oathbound Silversword Vaelor, Fig embarks on a quest to return Dev to his rightful place.

This book was such a great read. The characters of Fig and her companions are well-drawn with vulnerabilities aplenty, while the other characters they meet along the way are just as intriguing and marvellously described.

The plot races along from crisis to crisis, with lots of fight scenes, betrayals, successes and failures that kept me reading far longer than I should have.

The world-building is excellent, with judicious use of setting, clothing, food, weaponry and culture to immerse the reader into this new landscape.

The style is very accessible and easy to read, and the magic system is just as comprehensible.

I really enjoyed it. Need book 2 ASAP please!

Our protagonist Fig is in the tavern and ready for another boring night of odd jobs and low-level magework, when she’s told someone needs to speak to her. It’s her old friend Dev. Well…King Dev. Well…recently ousted in a coup and needing to take back his kingdom Dev. Things are about to get messy.

We have an intriguing set-up, some cool magic and Paladin-esque Silverswords, and an interesting twist at the end that’ll lead into an exciting series. I found the first half of the story a little episodic, but in the second half it became more cohesive and gripping. The relationship between Fig and Dev was the most interesting and refreshing part of the story, and I wished we got more peeks into their shared history. I really liked the worldbuilding in this story, and I’m looking forward to seeing it expand in future instalments.

I received an advance copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Standard story line fare that pushes no boundaries in either magic or characterization. Yet, this novel is well written with characters that you root for without being dragged into the deep mire of ugly deaths and visceral renderings. More of a light fantasy YA read that is more positive than negative in approach.

The MC is a hoot, and taketh no shiteth. Where this novel lost a little ground was the YA to the core story line and the blushing, crushing etc. At about the 75% mark, the novel loses traction as the movement stalls and we get immersed in juvenile team recriminations. There is also the constant handy plot devices that rescue the crew from certain deathly situations.

This is setting up for a series, and although I like the MC, these novels have a lot of growing up to do.

I really enjoyed this and think it is really driven by the characters.

Even though it is multiple PoV, Fig is the main character of the book. She's very likeable, although it's quite annoying that she gets rescued every time she gets in trouble.

My favourite character is definitely the dragonet, though. He's awesome and I love his sarky little quips! He also brings more depth to Fig's character.

It's an interesting book with some decent worldbuilding. I like how everything has been set up to lead into the next one, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

My biggest complaint was the pacing. At times, it seemed a bit slow and was just going from one place to another without a lot happening. I mean, there was action, but it was quite repetitive in some ways. However, it was still a good read that I enjoyed. 3.5 stars rounded up.

What I absolutely loved about this story world is how expansive it is, full of possibilities that stem from such a well-developed fantasy setting. It reminds me of the world map in The Lord of the Rings—a place rich with diverse locations to explore. Liz has created a world with that same potential. From the very start, I felt an immediate connection to the main character, Fig, and her challenging situation. Life is hard enough, but it’s even harder when you’ve been outcast by the very institution meant to be a haven for all mages. This is a story about finding your place in the world while standing by those you care about. It's a fantastic tale for anyone in need of an epic adventure. I can’t wait to read the next installment in the Legends of Gold and Silver series!

great start to this new fantasy adventure

Fig is a fire mage living away from the claws of the crown. Her old friend Prince Dev asks for help because his father has bern killed and he’a in danger. Fig sets off with him and his loyal guard to find a way to win back the kingdom. I like Fig, maybe she reminds me of myself, afraid of failing and of hurting others. She doubts herself and reacts poorly in bad situations which makes her a believable character. Although a few males play a central role in the story, the female personalities are much more interesting. I like that this book has one primary story, not 12 stories to keep up with that will fit together eventually. Great start to the series.

This is my first Liz Delton book and it did not disappoint! I can't believe I've been missing out on this incredible writing! Honestly, this love story is probably now one of my favorites even though it's a subplot because it's just so beautiful. The respect they have for each other is incredible. They're both strong and retain that, helping each other become stronger and providing encouragement as needed. Both have their own insecurities without being the pick me guy/girl, but the other always seems to know that along with knowing how to best encourage them without being told.
Not to forget that there is a dragonet pal! Who doesn't want an almost-pocket sized dragon coming along on their adventures!?
I also loved the world building, the different kinds of people, mages, swordsmen, you name it. The world itself was also just incredible. My only part I didn't like... there's a cliffhanger....

I loved this book! You're invested in every character, great development of characters and the world the author creates with such detail (I enjoy all of her books, read them if you haven't). I had to force myself to close the book and go to sleep (well past my usual bedtime) because between exciting storylines and twists, I wanted to know what happens next. I definitely recommend reading this book. It’s nice to read the first book in a new series and like it so much knowing there’s more to come. Now, I'll eagerly wait for the next book. I cannot wait to see what adventures Fig, Dev, Vaelor, Emrah and their companions have next and how they will thwart the evil forces set out to rule and oppress the inhabitants of their world.

A 5 ⭐ read!
I loved the big epic journey that Fig takes us on. First, I love her as a character and second, I absolutely adored all the other characters just as much! Emrah is a wonderful dragonet and I think Fang and the dryads were written so well.
Super cool magic system (elemental) and I think the way we watched Fig come to respect her magic was excellent.
I'm really excited for the second book of this series. Liz writes a great epic fantasy tale!

Good book

Interesting magic. Believable characters. The story is told focusing on different characters at different times. This is very effective as the different characters join the quest at different times and in different ways. All told a wonderfully written book. Looking forward to reading the next book.

3.5⭐ This book was very action packed and kept me interested the whole time. This book says it is for 14-18 years olds and that is accurate. The dialogue was very juvenile to me but I still wanted to know what was going to happen next. I loved the dragonet, a unique aspect. The world building was rich with many different types of characters and creatures. I will be continuing this series and do recommend.
