This, I think, is one of the best storybooks I ever read on ghosts or the supernatural. Though the author, Vignesh Sivasankar claims that he had applied his imagination in the development of the stories which are based on true crime, he also had portrayed incidents based on real-life experiences of people in this book. Some of the stories are really thought-provoking and will leave you truly astonished by creating an aura of strangeness and terror. I would specifically mention the story “The Confessions of a Psycho-killer”, which I found quite spine-chilling for most of the stories, you may feel that you can observe the situation closely and feel it with your heart and perceive the real situation and its gravity and terror! Notice small things like how God and spirituality come in helping the protagonist defeat the devil. The catch is in the details! When you read slowly and thoroughly you can feel it

The Devil’s Autopsy by Vignesh Sivasankar is a set of 5 thriller short stories. The 5 stories are not related in any way. It is set in various parts of India, including Kerala which is my hometown. If the first story was an experiment gone wrong the second was about a psychopathic arsonist, likewise all the five stories were different, really fast paced and intense.
The first story was about a vet’s experiment gone wrong and it was so beautifully written. I felt a lot of emotions while reading it. The writer was able to make us feel love, fear, hatred, madness and many others from the characters.
2 of the stories that stuck with me even after finishing the book was the story inspired by the Burari case which shook our country. It’s a case of superstition gone wrong which ended up in 11 family members’deaths and the story inspired by the mysterious Cecil Hotel located in LA. Cecil is an infamous hotel where a lot of mysterious deaths took place including the shocking case of Elisa Lam. These two cases are still a big mystery. As a crime thriller fan these two cases actually made me restless, but after reading Vignesh’s version I felt like I got some closure, thank you for that.
The scariest part of this book is that it was so relatable to me. As in, the daily incidents mentioned in the books and the people were actually relatable characters who we encounter on a daily basis or someone we have met in the past. #TheTenCommandmentsOfEvil is one of my all-time favourite collections. I used to believe that’s the best horror short-story collection, but you have proved me wrong with this book—a collection of 5 scary novellas.
“Can animals commit suicide? That, too, mass suicide?”
Panchatantra is one of my all-time favourite collections, but this story has totally changed my bond with animals; cold-surviving birds and animals created goosebumps. Assam was a place I always wanted to visit to enjoy the magic of the Himalayas and the beauty of the Brahmaputra, but now I’m not very sure. Dear author, you have really scared me. The obsession of the old man is super creepy.
“Can a person be possessed with fire?”
This is one of the recent tales in Chennai of a psychokiller and a sincere cop. This story is a dance of fire and the power of a curse. We know that fire is the source of life, but what will you do when you learn it is also a curse of death? This story is very engaging, and the best part is I narrated this story to my guy, who is a hardcore Chennaite, but now he is returning home before it’s dark. "The storytelling keeps one on the edge" that's true in the case of this book.
The Devil's Autopsy is a collection of five stories, each one is equally thrilling. Truly, each story shows how the devil works. Each story is wholesome and has that secret hidden.
The first story "Decapitated" had me on the edge, and as I got goosebumps as soon as I realised that Biru killed his wife, surely, the devil overpowered his senses. I was really thrilled as he tried to revive creatures after beheading them.
The second one, "Confessions of a Psycho-killer", had a shocking transition of Surya to a psycho-killer. Woah! It again came as a surprise.
"The Coffin Maker" had me on edges and I was thinking how could a person port a person into another world, it was one a heck of a story.
"Twelve Branches of a Banyan Tree" seemed similar to the Burari case, but I am glad Vikas saved his family on time. Truly, the devil can play with your mind, and get you close to death.
"A Disturbing Death" shocked me as Amina died mysteriously in the end. Woah, how could someone plan all of it, or was it supernatural?
All the five stories were interesting. They have an audacity to keep the reader on the edge. Well defined characters is a plus-point. All of it is written in the form of diary entries, all along with dates and time makes it easier to understand the sequences.

I am glad that I started the book without reading the preface and was totally gasped by the surprise and shock it provided. Based on the title of the book, I presumed it to be a novel similar to the movie 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe', but it has more to do with that. And not just one; the book came up with five different short stories dealing with the horror of crime, murders, hauntings, and the supernatural, and which perfectly blended to give us a thrilling experience of reading.
Each story had its own unique elements and storyline, mind-boggling characters, and not to miss the climax. It also emphasized the vulnerabilities of the human mind, with special attention to its psychology.
From a mad scientist who does unethical experiments on animals; a psychological killer who finds peace and joy over burning humans to ashes, to a puppet who plays weird elevator games to lure women into its trap, each of the characters shone throughout the storyline.
Of all the positive aspects, what I didn't like was the cliffhanger for each of those gruesome tales. Apparently, this feature has made the book more appealing. Mind you, this isn't for fainthearted people.

The book is a collection of 5 novellas that explore the supernatural and each one of them is spine chilling in itself. Right from the first story when an experiment goes horribly wrong to a coffin experience to a puppet show that changes the lives of the people who were a part of it, the author keeps you hooked to the book. The storytelling is powerful and even in the novella format, Vignesh keeps the thrill and horror quotient of the stories at its peak. As a reader, you are spooked but there is a sense of curiosity that makes you keep turning the pages to find out what really happens. Another aspect of the book I really liked was that the climax in each story is unexpected and you are surprised at each turn of the event. If I had to pick, I would say that “Twelve Branches of a Banyan Tree” and “A Disturbing Death” would be my favourite of the lot, purely because the goosebumps were quite real and frequent. “Confessions of a Psycho Killer” stood out for me purely because of the way it was written and the manner in which the evil affects people, and the open-ended climax that Vignesh leaves out that can terrify anyone!
