this story was actually not bad at all. i trusted the process and it ended up so good. at first it wasn’t my cup of tea bc it was pure angst and darkness. it broke my heart every two seconds, but it was like a drug. addictive. i literally couldn’t stop reading.

i love how annette and heiner were written. their characters were complex, layered, and never shallow. they had real depth, and i loved watching them grow both together and on their own. with heiner, i struggled at first bc of how he was introduced, but i just couldn’t hate him. yes, he starts off manipulative and revenge driven, but once you understand his backstory, everything hits different. he’s obsessive and he pushes annette to her breaking point to the point she almost ends her life, but this man loved her from the very beginning. he longed for her, called her name like a prayer, and held on to the hope of surviving every physical and mental torture he went through. annette was his only light. he just didn’t know how to express it until later, so please give him a chance before judging him.

as for annette, this innocent noble girl… she was flawed too. i didn’t like her at first bc she gave off out of touch aristocrat vibes, but her character development was flawless. she’s the perfect example of “the sins of the parent aren’t the child’s fault.” she didn’t choose her family, none of us do, but she still took accountability for her father’s sins even though they weren’t hers. she almost died trying to repent. she embraced her imperfections, her family’s wrongs, everything, and still chose to serve people genuinely with her whole heart. that alone was enough payment for sins she didn’t even owe.

i also loved her friendship with catherine and cath’s family. it breaks my heart how it turned out, but i loved every second of it.

joseph too. i adored that child. i honestly wish heiner and annette could’ve adopted him, but i get why it didn’t happen.

their love story was pure torture in the best and worst ways. heartbreaking to the point i had to pause sometimes because it was too much. but from the start you just know heiner and annette belonged to each other. even with all the time they spent apart, they were always meant to find their way back. and when they finally did? it was so satisfying.

if you’re reading this for the first time, trust the process. you can judge them early, but don’t drop the book. you’ll love the ending.

As the male lead, Heiner is the most broken character that I've ever read. He is traumatized by the brutal torture in the war and his love for Annette is like his imaginary world.

I subscribe to the translator's Patreon because I can't find the other resource. Although the topic of this novel is really hard to read, I see from a different perspective. Usually,I read the regression or isekai topic, but this novel shows how painful the war effect for soldier

I think this is slowly becoming my second favourite title after 'Betrayal of Dignity'. Not because I like the male lead, but because I love the realistic story from a historical setting. Chloe-Damian has the same position in their smart move, Heiner-Annette is the contrary.

Usually, we find that one person will have a wound in the heart, and then another character will heal it. But, in 'My Beloved Oppressor' we will see the fact how dangerous it is when a wounded person who doesn't heal will destroy the other, including the closest one.

While Annette is slowly healing because she realises the root cause of her wound, then she takes action to face her guilt as a naive noble lady in the past. She never blames Heiner or people who hate her dad. Heiner is still in denial. We can see the difference.

I wept my tears when I reached this part 😭😭

"Heiner had made her his purpose in life.

It was certainly not a normal form of emotion. It was a toxic way of thinking. So their relationship needed to end here."

Manhwa readers only blame Heiner because we see it from Annette's POV. When we see this story from humanity's POV as a soldier, as an orphanage who never feels the parents' love, a boy who have an inferiority complex and craves to be loved, and a woman who lives in a shell, it's beautiful

If 'Betrayal of Dignity' gives me suspense and strategy, 'My Beloved Oppressor' gives me the most beautiful and tragic story of how war can ruin someone's life although it can affect their relationship badly.

Fairly new to reading webcomics. I stumble upon this while watching Matty Bites on Youtube and how she talked about her controversial opinion with the webcomics. I know this is the novel version, and I only got to read the Web Comics version, but I really enjoyed this for my first web comic.

I am tired of starting off web comics where FL would just blush, act dumb, and become submissive to the ML — this breaks the trope when FL in this comic stands for her decision. It was very heavy during the first few episodes, and not flowery as others which set the premise of the story. Overtime, we get to see how their ‘romance’ started. While many believed that ML’s actions towards FL isn’t justified with his trauma, I think, this is more realistic in comparison to others where ML is praised and worshipped despite having the nastiest attitude and what-the-fck decisions.

Unlike the majority, I liked the ending and how the title came to be. At face value, we see Heiner as the oppressor to Annette, but the ending made sense when Annette revealed the song she played on piano. It was supposed to be dramatic, yes. But who says dramas can’t end with good/happy endings.

Characters are both flawed and complex which breaks the fiction and reality. They are not exactly as morally grey as others think, but there was character development in both of them — a reality. I can go on days just talking about this web comics but I really really really enjoyed it. This web comics will always have a special place in my heart.

If you're in the mood for some angst, this is the book for you.

I'm not really sure if there's a payoff yet. The premise of the story is certainly intriguing- daughter of a Marquess falls in love with soldier, soldier ends up as a spy and turns on her country, killing her family, and now she's stuck wedded to this man who hates her.

I mean- the beginning alone would have you rooting for her demise. It was the only way to mercifully end her suffering. The young noble lady who knew of nothing, ignorant of all problems except for her own, paying for the sins of her father in the most cruelest way. To say I was gutted is an understatement.

MMC is as unhinged as they come. Due to his horrible upbringing, being orphaned forced to fight for his life in a Hunger-Games-esked island where only the elite survive, he was forcibly drugged to have his emotions stunted. His comrades all killed in battle during a mission gone wrong where they were captured, tortured, and forced to give up valuable information to the enemy.

In return, he focuses his hatred on her. Woos her, tricks her, and manipulates her into loving this farce of a man he is so that he can torment her. Refusing to let her go until the very end where she attempts to unalive herself on multiple occasions because being with him is a worst fate than death.

If you're in the mood to cry, read this. If you want to feel the sting of sadness in your heart, read this. If you want to see what a wounded man can do to those he claims to love, read this.

The most heartbreaking book I’ve read in a while.
The way war and society could impact in somebody’s mind and life was so well written here.
At first I really hated Heiner for everything he did to Annette and I wanted them to not end up together, because of the suffering he inflicted upon her, even after reading about his background story my choice was the same, it wasn’t a really good explanation, but it was some true, if we think about all the torture Heiner had to endure when he was captured and the way that twisted his mind. It wasn’t an excuse for everything he did to that poor woman, but for me, it was logic he acted that way.
After Annette divorced him, he really had a hard time, and I think he learned from his choices and some how the fact that Annette attended to end her life, not one, but two times, give him some long about the hell she was trough because of him.
At the end, I think that he made up his mind, and accepted his love for her, out of the fact that he used her at the start, and that love made him choose the correct path and became a better person for her.
They were really hurt and broken, but at the end, they teach me that if you love someone, even aferre their troubled past, you could live and love again that same person if the two work together to rebuild that relationship.
It was a very beautiful message for a time like this with all that banality and hatred between people.
I will take in my heart and love this story for the rest of my existence.

He was a victim too, he saw her as his life, and he thought she’s opposite him, she can live without him.
I love this novel it’s one of my fav novels in 2024

I read the manhwa version & also the novel version. Each one is equally compelling.

The story was haunting, heart wrenching and beautiful. So well written with flowery words that was not meant to impress but to hurt. Pretty and sharp at the same time. It made me feel every emotion. The ending was carefully crafted and did not leave any lingering question.

I recommend this to everyone who is willing to suspend their judgement and patient enough to follow the characters's painful journey.

This will make you ugly cry on the bus. (Do proceed with caution, this also made me literally spiral down into a depressive episode but it's still so good <3) I don't know how I feel about the ending. I really really wanted them to not get together after everything he put her through.. but I guess them ending up with each other makes sense and he did have some character development? Idk I'm not sure how I feel about it

[3.75] The story itself isn’t anything groundbreaking but it’s written so well that it just hits. Every chapter hurt. I kept crying because I could feel everything they were feeling. Everyone in this novel is miserable in some way but it’s done with so much emotion and care that you can’t look away. It’s messy, painful and exhausting but I loved every second of it.

A lot of angst but its bearable. I gave it 4 star because I couldn’t stop reading. Toxic relationship and twisted desire. It actually shows how important communication is in a relationship. A good read.

Finished this novel a yr ago but I'm writing this now because unfortunately the manhwa has reached the end 😢 and I really wanna show my love for this 😭❤️

This novel and manhwa has honestly fully took over my soul and life 😭 The way war was shown in this was absolutely heartbreaking to read but so real which is one of my favorite things abt this. Both heiners and annettes character developments were also amazing 💔❤️ I really like the complexity of both main characters and I can clearly see the author took alot of thought to make the characters who they are. This point is kinda like common sense but I like how the author made Annette have a miscarriage and then not change it later and make her magically have a baby in side stories and this sounds like really common sense but the amount of times I've seen the opposite happen is crazy 💔. I actually love the ending I'm not sure if it's correct but I took the ending as them ending up as friends instead of getting together again suddenly (but they do get back together in side stories) it was so refreshing from what I've seen and it definitely made sense again like I said if that is the case which it might not. Not to mention and I know I've already talked abt the characters and stuff but I really want to point out how I love Annette being a strong character (not in the sense of physical abilities but mental) Cus that is definitely not something I see often in toxic and angsty novels so it was really nice to see. I also really like how hiener is shown to sacrifice his life for Annette but not his country I think that shows alot and is also refreshing 😭 cus I've seen too many mls who just will sacrifice anything and everything js for their FL and it's honestly so annoying and kinda like what?? Like km sorry but no 😭😭. Alrighty I'm gonna go cry again and fan girl over this series again now 😽😽

One of my favourite manhwa just ended 😭😭. The story was beautiful, and the art style was chef’s kiss. It felt like a retelling of someone’s real-life story.

The manhwa took me through a range of emotions—angst, anger, sadness, love—everything. Both characters were flawed, especially the Heiner.

Annette didn't know there was a world outside the little cage her father created for her, maybe to protect her or maybe to control her.

And the Heiner’s unhealthy obsession with her 😭… when he finally realized she would rather die than be with him, he let her go 😭😭. Yet, he still couldn’t keep her off his mind.

I swear, this felt like a biography 😭😭. It’s so beautiful. War, torture, damage to people’s minds, emotions, and the world—and yet I’m so happy the author gave them a happy ending despite everything 😭😭. Every arc of their love story was worth it. They really deserved it.

At first, I hated the Heiner. But as I continued reading, the hatred blurred until I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything was okay—that he had tried, that he deserved happiness.
The only character I truly hated was Annette's father. Fuck that axxhole.
