Brenna longs to start her new life away from her family's kingdom between the mortal and Seelie lands. But her dreams are shattered when the Unseelie King’s right-hand arrives, claiming her as part of a deal not of her own making. Forcing her to leave her home and join the king’s court.
To protect herself and everyone she holds dear, she must follow the king’s three rules: Do not escape. Sleep beside him each night. Never look upon his face.
If Brenna can obey him for just one year, she will receive her freedom as her prize. It only requires her to learn how to live on the dark, sensual, and dangerous island of the monsters determined to poison her with her own hate.
There's a lot of repetition in the first half of the book. I enjoyed everyone but the main character, and if I dislike the main character, the entire book is soured for me.
As soon as Brenna arrives to the Unseelie kingdom, she continues to FAFO. For 30 days straight. She'll do some fuck shit and her "captors" let her off lightly, until she proceeds to needle at them more until they punish her and she cries and begs. Rinse and repeat.
The amount of times I read, "I hate you!" "please, please!" "Unhand me!" made me roll my eyes. She acted like a child throwing a tantrum and was rightfully called out for it. I was surprised she didn't spend more time in the dungeon.
The king and his right hand were pretty forthcoming with what they expected of her and told her what would happen if she continued to try to kill the king. When she inevitably does again and gets punished, she has the audacity to pull a shocked Pikachu face.
The twist/reveal at the end was unexpected and rushed, though there were hints sprinkled in throughout the book.
I thank the author for sending this to me, and am disappointed that it wasn't my cup of tea. I don't think I'll read the next book as I can't stand another page of Brenna's shrieking and overall hysterics.
I was given the amazing opportunity to receive a free ARC copy of this book for my honest review. It is definitely worth the read!!! The book immediately hooks you in and you can’t put it down.
This book begins with action right out of the gate, due to a family secret suddenly thrusted upon our FMC, Brenna. Throughout the book, there are all kinds of different people and creatures that keep you on your toes not knowing what’s going to happen next! The plot twist is insanely out of left field!!!! I will definitely be rereading this book!
This book? Whew. I devoured it like a vampire at a blood buffet. It’s addictive, spicy, and has that true enemies-to-lovers tension that makes you want to throw your Kindle one second and then kiss it the next.
Brenna, though… girl. For being 150 years old, she’s out here acting like a bratty teenager. Her tantrums were next level—I was rolling my eyes so hard I saw my past lives. But despite that, I couldn’t stop reading. The tension, the heat, the constant power struggle—it’s all there and it’s so good.
And that ENDING? I am in a chokehold. The twists, the secrets, the jaw-dropping reveals—I’m over here like WTF just happened?! I NEED book 2 immediately. Someone, anyone, please tell me it’s coming because I am unwell.
I’m so grateful to have been given this book as an ARC. The world that is built is fascinating and it is a true enemies to lovers romance. I enjoyed the characters and the twists and turns in the plot.
I will say that I don’t think I’m meant to be an ARC reader because waiting for the next book might actually kill me.
First off, thank you to the author for giving me the chance to read an advanced copy of this book! I will say that I really did like this story and I think the author has a talent for storytelling. After finishing the book and learning that it was written in only 12 days, I can say that it definitely feels unfinished. My biggest complaint is the lack of consistency in character motivation. Dialogue scenes are often messy, with characters going from very calm nonchalant discussions to literally murderous with no reason that is obvious to the reader. There was just far too many of these confusing character interactions for me to enjoy the story as a whole. The spice scenes were good, but again, often unexplainable. Like I really just can’t understand how interactions can go from pure hatred to soft and sensual with no clear connection. It all just felt very rushed and incomplete. On top of that, there are simple typos that are distracting. Even the fmc’s name spelled wrong occasionally. I hate to give a rough review on a story I really did like. I just wish there was more time put into the project, it would be a great book with a little more precision.
I usually love illustrations in a story but in this case it may have been better to leave them out as neither of the men in the drawings looked attractive. Pushing past that the story is entertaining but gives one emotional whiplash from the main character Brenna constantly feeling angry so angry in fact she stabbed someone. She's angry like the whole book. But then with no real transition I honestly thought I had skipped a page, she loves the main man, the king Ulrich. She feels its a sin and doesn't understand it. That's fine, but then as the book starts to end it seems she's finally for reals falling in love with him, it seems sweet, it's actually happening, but then oh no, she's been tricked by Titania who had some super long wait in the shadows scheme to entrap the king and Brenna just helped her by looking at Ulrich's face. Brenna unreasonably angry trys to kill Ulrich for some reason and not Titania and once again she hates him. I feel like a good beta reader could have helped with these transitions and every characters overuse of the phrase "Unhand me." Also I'm calling out the author on a spicy scene that I'm pretty sure is physically impossible. Pretty sure.

I received this book as an ARC reader based on a short teaser she posted in a facebook group... I should have known then this book would ruin me! A true slow burn enemies to lovers dark romance with plot! The world building was phenomenal and I'm disappointed I read it early because now I have to wait even longer for book two 😫
Wow. Wow. Wow. So many thoughts about what I just read but finding it hard to put into words atm. Enjoyed this dark fantasy - was not expecting majority of this story lol. Definitely very different from anything else I’ve read before !
Seelie & Unseelie Fae tales mixes with Beauty and the Beast meets Norse mythology with a hint of crossroads demon legend. This dark fantasy romance is an enemies to…lovers?…with forced proximity, her life is out of her control, and there’s a twisty twist at the end. When the book includes an author’s note to “enjoy your re-read”, you know the twist was good.
Brenna is a half-fae half-mortal princess who has spent the last 3 years writing to Leif, her betrothed, and is set to meet him face to face when her family’s hidden secret comes crashing into her life and ruins everything. Instead of sailing off into the sunset with the love of her life, she’s being taken by the dreadful Unseelie King for a year of servitude thanks to a deal some great-grandfather made that really only had negative repurcussions for her. She’s wholly unprepared for what she finds in the castle and kingdom of the Unseelie King, Ulrich, but she must do what she can to survive the next 12 months and gain her freedom. All she has to do is follow his rules…should be easy, right? And we can’t forget our charmingly funny right-hand to the king turned good friend to Brenna. I love when there’s a trusted confidant of the villain who has a soft spot for the FMC.
I haven’t read a book that I didn’t want to put down for a while. This took me about 24 hours to finish, and it’s been a while since a story captivated me like this. I’m only mad I have to wait who knows how long for the 2nd book. :( Overall I think the main plot is good. There were a few places where the reactions or interactions between Brenna and Ulrich felt a little disjointed, almost as if something was cut for time, but it wasn’t enough to take me out of enjoying the story. The writing is solid, although there are quite a few places where the author uses broken sentences, almost like stream of consciousness thoughts versus a fully fleshed out sentence. It’s more heavily present in the early few chapters, and while it did bump me a bit at first, I got over it when I got into the story. It’s nothing that would prevent me from reading other books by this author.
There is spice, but this book is plot first, spice second, in my opinion, which is just how I like my spice served. Also I appreciated that the author didn’t use “dirty talk” to fill in the spicy scenes, nor did they use cringey descriptive words.
Check your trigger warnings! The author provides a solid list for you, and I would definitely recommend reviewing those before diving in. While there was nothing in here that was a problem for me personally, there are themes that may be sensitive for some.
This was an ARC copy, but all thoughts & opinions are genuinely mine, and I would buy this book in a heartbeat if I hadn't received an ARC copy.
This book will probably be my favorite this year. I finished it a week ago, and I'm still thinking about it. I'm even considering re-reading it. The story is so good, the author pulling you into this fantasy realm. The writing is superb, and both world building and character development is top notch. I honestly don't have anything bad to say about this book.
Following Brenna after the unseelie king claims her, a consequence from a deal once made, is a journey. Her hate for Ulrich is potent. And how that hate somehow twist into something else, during her year in his court, is interesting to witness. And the twist at the end?! I yelled at my poor kindle, I really did not see it coming!
I can't wait for the next book! ❤️
Received as and ARC reader, but all opinions are honest and my own.
I was lucky enough to be given an amazing opportunity to get in on an ARC read for this book and it exceeded my expectations. From the time you start the book to finishing it you’re in for a wild ride. I struggled with the MFC being very whiny but when secrets are involved sometimes you are just frustrated and confused. The second half of the book will leave your jaw on the floor. Fantastic twist at the end will leave you mad but in a way that will make you want book 2! I recommend this book when it’s released!
Wow! This is book 1 in a series, and I cannot wait for more to come out. It does have the miscommunication trope that annoys me, and I still loved this book.
Each character felt fully formed in the pages. Yes, I guessed a few of the more obvious twists and turns but not all by any means. THE SPICE WAS SPICY!! 🌶️🔥❤️🔥🔥🌶️
Basic plot is of a crossroads demon coming to collect his debt 150yrs after the deal was struck. Poor female didn't even know about the debt her Great Great Great whomever struck. This makes me feel bad for her. Seems like she is going to suck it up and do her time and we get to go along for the ride. Unfortunately, FMC is really a brat. I get it, she is uncomfortable, has been lied to by her family and no one is even trying to save her or sorry she is dragged away to live with this crossroads demon. I don't think she has ever heard of the old phrase 'you catch more with honey'. I just see her digging her own hole. Ma'am you are the master of your own misery. I did notice that she loves water which made me guess somethings, some were right, others were VERY wrong and who knows may come to play in the next book.
It felt like the author wrote the whole thing and then was told it was too long, so they chopped it into two books. The ending of book 1 seems abrupt and I really do not enjoy a cliffhanger. However, it does guarantee that I WILL be reading book 2 when it comes out.
*This was provided by the author as an ARC for an honest review*
thank you so much to C.A. Blooming for the ARC copy of this book! 🤍
i don’t even know where to start. i’m usually not huge on fae fantasies, but this one sucked me in DEEP. i love these characters, this world, the TENSION, and the twist in the end made me jump out of my seat. i LOVE our precious beast so, so much. i love how strong and brave brenna is while also being a giant crybaby. i swear that girl is crying every five minutes, but i GET IT and i would be too!!!
i’m so lucky to have gotten to read this book early, but now waiting for the second one may kill me. i have so many questions! i need so many answers!!
i loved this book. yay for being so so pleasantly surprised by a fantasy.
I'm so thankful I got to be an ARC reader for this book, this is the first book I've read by C A Blooming, and I just bought everything she's written and I'm about to binge.
ABIB is incredible. If you love DARK fantasy romance, with great character development, incredible spice, and twists that will make you want to throw your Kindle while simultaneously never wanting to stop reading this is the book for you.
The world is fascinating and it leaves you wanting to know more. It was beautifully fleshed out, but not overwhelming. I'm excited to see the rest of the world get fleshed out in future books.
The character growth was *chef's kiss*, and the characters were incredibly fun and unique. Ulrich is unhinged in the best ways (he is seriously dark), but he is so compelling, and I desperately want to learn everything about him. Olen is charming and sassy. He made me laugh and he was a great balance to Ulrich's intensity. I loved Brenna. Did I want her to just GIVE in to Ulrich and his right hand? Absolutely. But, C A Blooming is a master slow burn, and her reactions felt realistic to what happened in the story. Brenna's growth was a delight to read, and at the end of the book I was (and I am) chomping at the bit to see what she's going to do next.
The spice is incredibly well done. This is a slow burn, and by the time the flames ignight it's all worth it.
Seriously. This book has some of the hottest scenes I've ever read. Nothing felt repetitive, and I had to fan myself a few times.
I wanted to cry when I finished, because I was devastated I have to leave this world. There is a cliffhanger that will leave you speechless, but it's all worth it.
I'm very excited for Part 2, and for future rereads!!
Let me start off by saying this is my first ARC opportunity and I am so grateful to have been chosen to receive an early copy of this book. Now to get to the good stuff, holy moly yall. I have been in such a reading slump for the past several months, I wasn’t even all that excited to get this ARC because I wasn’t in the mood to read. Nothing I started caught and kept my attention.. I was getting discouraged bc reading is my outlet. I decided I would go ahead and start this book because nothing else was doing it for me.. wow I am so glad that I did. For those interested in the 🌶️ - The spice was SPICING. This was my first experience with MFM and it was so well done and still didn’t distract from the main love interest. I can’t even discribe the emotional roller coaster this took me on. I won’t lie, Brenna got on my nerves at the beginning but I think that was the point. The toxicity of this relationship was top notch in the best way, I’ve never been gladly gaslit like this. I was giggling, kicking my feet, screaming, CRYING, throwing up, all of it. WOW, I think I’m officially out of my reading slump. I can’t wait for the next one!!
**I was an ARC Reader for this. This is my 100% HONEST review**
This book was good and so different than the fantasy books that are popular right now. The spicy scenes were HOT but I found the FMC a little annoying. She was amazing when she wasn't crying over the smallest things, which was only like 10% of the book. The plot twist??!! CHEFS KISS. There were elements to this book that were so special and set it apart from what I've been reading recently. Overall, I liked it a lot and will be doing a reread.
A Bond in Blood will be released in the spring! I am definitely going to be reading the second one.
Ok so idk how to say this but…. I DNFed this book at about 46%. I tried really hard to finish it I really did. I got the ARC for this book thinking it would be a really good book. The first few chapters got me into it. Not going to lie it had potential. But once it actually got started it got very repetitive. Like the MCs had the same argument one to 2 times a chapter. I can deal with that as long as there is more going one between each argument but there wasn’t. And the amount of times the FMC told the MMC that she hates him?!? At least 3 times a chapter. I really wish I could have finished this book but it was a hard pass. I may try again but I’m not too sure if I will or not.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do a TRUE enemies-to-lovers! I’ve been on the hunt for a fresh, dark Romantasy, and this book absolutely knocked it out of the park. I devoured it and now I’m just sitting here, staring at the wall, not okay after that ending.
I love a world that weaves fae and shifters together in a way that’s subtle, where the world-building unfolds gradually and pulls you in deeper with every chapter. Our FMC, Brenna, is taken captive by the “evil” Unseelie King and his kingdom, and boyyyyy, was that a ride.
This book leans heavily into the relationships, and when the plot really starts ramping up toward the end? My head was spinning trying to figure out how I missed some of the context clues.
Also… this is an MFM situation and DANG, the spice was on point. Sharing is caring friends! 😂 That cliffhanger? Brutal. I need book two immediately.
BRO. I am not ok. When is the next book. How long must I wait to find out what happens next...
I have been in a reading slump for the past few weeks, and this is the first book I've picked up where I could not put it down. It is all consuming. I even called out of work yesterday just so I could read this book. YES, I DID IT, I USED MY PTO TO READ A BOOK. I need some Ulrich and Olen in my life. Brenna is also a complete badass which had me sold from the beginning. I have a feeling that this book and the characters will be living in my brain rent free for a while. Thank you, C.A. Blooming, for writing this story. I absolutely cannot wait until the next story is out. You have gained a fan in me, and I have added your other books to my list to read immediately.
OooMG!!! I started this book and couldn’t put it down. It keeps you interested and obsessed with what’s going to happen next. The constant back and forth. It’s a dark love romance with the MMC and MFC love to hate each other. My only draw back is it ends on a cliffhanger. Will there be a second book. I hope so. I need to know what happens.
I devoured this book and I'm pretty sure it devoured me right back!
As per CABlooming fashion this book will take your emotions, make you feel amazing and then absolutely destroy you, I loved every moment of this book and I seriously can't wait to see what happens next to our lovely Ursa 😏
I could not put this book down. It’s a slow burn but so worth the wait! I was obsessed with the main characters and constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what they’d do next. I also loved the world building/descriptions. I really felt immersed in it all. While I am so incredibly thankful to be an ARC reader it also pains me to have to wait longer to see what happens next!
Kind of like a beauty and the beast retelling with fae and pirates. I really like enjoyed this story and the twist at the end. I will definitely need the next book soon!
I give this book a very enthusiastic 3 stars for the story development, fun dialogue and the slight twist at the end. I found the plot to be intriguing and enjoyed how things were slowly fed throughout the book instead of a big info dump right at the beginning. You’re not supposed to know what’s really going on or what everyone’s motives are and it was a treat the way it was all played out.
I will say the FMC was epically frustrating for pretty much the whole book but that is also part of the point. What does she really want? What does she really feel about everything? All things she has to sus out in her own time which for readers is like “come on! Just do as you’re told” but life is rarely that cut and dry.
I enjoyed both Olen and Ulrich and can’t wait to reread to see all the things I missed on the first one because IYKYK
DNF @ 60%. I'm not sure how many books are in this series, but I made it to 60% and there's not a lot of movement in the plot. Miscommunication is the main villain in this story unfortunately. I just wanted a good time and it was at parts but lost interest with the sort of repetition. Might pick it back up later.
I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book! This was my first ARC read and I loved this opportunity!
This book grabbed my attention from the first few sentences. I couldn’t stop reading it! The images that flashed through my head while reading these first chapters were amazing. The character dynamics were amazing even though she has only released the first three chapters for now. I can’t wait to read the rest and update my review.
While on vacation last week, I took several TBR’s, this being one of then. I truly thought I would be bouncing back and forth between them all. That was not the case! I was hooked almost immediately!
Between the family secret and Brenna’s uncertain future…….I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. There is a plot twist at the end and it is excellent! Knowing what I know now, I can not wait to “enjoy my reread.”
I really enjoyed the book. It is a dark romance and it is spicy, so heed those trigger warnings.
I was given the opportunity to receive a free ARC of A Bond in Blood for my honest review.
