Now marching toward the end of her teen years, though with the soul of one ageless, Roishin has fully established herself in the Order of Ankou, as well as his true and rightful daughter. Her powers have grown far beyond what even Ankou had hoped for.

As the "bringer of life," she has fulfilled her duty to her family and to Sursha, and the royal line will continue with the birth of her and Elsie’s daughter, Mariota. But, as Roishin tries to balance who she once was with who she’s become, she must face the fact that her destiny and her heart lay in a place she never could have imagined—even as it was right in front of her all along.

Roishin’s actions will set in motion events that will unearth the true nature of her brother, as well as light the fuse that will change the fate of millions and bring about a reckoning that only she who dreams can imagine.

Join her, Enori, all those you love, and many more you will meet as Roishin follows her Destiny in Book 4, She Who Dreams.

I loved this fourth installment in the Destiny Series (historical fiction with a fantasy/mystical flair) and now I NEED book five to be out soon!

There's a lot going on in this book and I don't want to even hint at the action in it (and there is definitely action!), for fear of spoiling it for someone. So, sticking to general impressions ...

First, let me say you need to read the first three books in the series before picking this one up or you'll not understand a lot of what is happening. She Who Would Be King (Book 1) introduces characters and sets up the world for this first part of the series. There were bad guys, action, surprises and a love story. I was completely captivated! Daughter of Ankou (Book 2) added new elements to the world. New characters were introduced. And the arc of the series begins to appear (but lots of surprises to come!) In some ways this book was a classic tale of good versus evil. Doors (Book 3) continued to build the world and shifted focus to Roishin, daughter Cateline and Fallon, while keeping you in touch with other characters you've come to love. In lots of ways, it's is a story of figuring out who you are and determining how your life will proceed. In other ways it is a story of accepting your gifts and saying goodbye to the life you want and would have chosen if you were not who you know yourself to be. There is beauty and sadness and joy as life continues to move the characters along.

Now comes Book 4 (the actual subject of this review). Roishin is maturing and setting out on what will be her life's work. And she is starting to understand the what and why of that. More elements are added to our understanding of Roishin's world and the powers of those who share that world with her. Her powers are growing, but her heart is growing too. And so is her family. The first part of the book felt like visiting with old friends and catching up with changes in them and their lives. We meet new characters who become part of the family. There were definitely some bittersweet moments as Roishin outgrew parts of her past. The second part of the book slammed me up against the wall and showed me that even old friends can change in unexpected ways and surprise and frighten you. And the ending! Well let's just say the next installment can't come too soon.

As with the other books in this series, She Who Dreams is well plotted, well paced and just plain well written! I love how all the characters embrace found family. If I had to pick a theme for this installment, it would be family. Family is who you say it is, but the bonds of family are fragile and must be tended. In fact, those you know as family can change in sad and terrifying ways leaving a crack where estrangement and even evil might grow.

Buckle up!

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

I’ve been following this series since the beginning, and it’s always a real pleasure to follow this history!

So basically we continue with Roishin and her new life in Duras, as well the progress of Elsie as princess and the daughter of both….

Since the last book I was just wondering when Enori would made her move, or for Roishin to realize that Enori was meant for her!

The epilogue might suggest that the history isn’t finished and I’m dying to know what comes next!

I’m always pleasantly surprised how this series continues to play out. I love it.

Spoiler below:

The only thing I didn’t like is that Roishin said she didn’t cheat on Elsie but Elsie had no idea that Roishin was seeing Enori.. so I’m not sure how that’s not cheating? They never had a conversation about being “over”.
