The Wandering Inn #14

Hell's Wardens

Rate this book
The Horns of Hammerad are being hunted by magic, and monsters alike.

A [Mage] team from Wistram Academy is dogging Pisces, Ceria, Ksmvr, and Yvlon's steps, with revenge in mind. However, adventurers must work and the Horns have been called on as security for an ambitious project: building a road past the Bloodfields towards the rest of southern Izril.

There is more to the world than just Liscor, however. Players of Celum are coming to Invrisil with a splash. There are [Knights] from Terandria roaming around Izril after their battle with the Witch of Webs, and they have heard tell of a mysterious slayer of Goblins. Throw in Foliana, Three-Color Stalker hopping about her day, and there are endless opportunities for chaos. But with fun and excitement always comes danger.

The Bloodfields spread like a stain upon the land, and few who enter ever survive. The Horns of Hammerad don't plan on entering or getting into more trouble. However, even the monsters on the edges of the Bloodfields are a cut above the rest. Whether or not they triumph or perish to their rivals, to cowardice, or their foes...

The Bloodfields await.

Holy cow I LOVED this book! I think this has been my favorite book in a while for the series. And let’s call this what it is, a 5 star review for book 14 of my favorite fantasy series. All I can really do is glaze this book up. But just WOW amazing drama, interludes, and action! I laughed out loud multiple times. I think my only complaint is that I don’t know anyone else who is caught up on the audiobooks. I love that we’ve gotten so many Innverse books this year and I’m just hoping next year is just as good!

Hell's Wardens is an absolute masterpiece! Pirateaba has a rare gift for storytelling, weaving a world and characters so vivid they leap off the page. They are, without a doubt, the scribe of war—crafting fight scenes that are gripping, visceral, and unforgettable. Every battle pulls you in, making your heart race as you cheer for the characters and brace for the fallout.

This book doesn't just thrill; it hits. When a character falls, it’s impossible not to choke up. And yet, Pirateaba also gives some of them a chance at redemption, weaving their arcs into the broader tapestry of an already incredible story. The narrative keeps you on the edge of your seat, delivering twists, triumphs, and heartbreak right up to the very last page.

What sets Pirateaba apart is how they masterfully balance the highs and lows. The fight scenes hit a fever pitch of adrenaline, pulling you into the chaos, only to guide you back down with equal skill. They have a way of calming your nerves and settling you back into the story’s rhythm, creating a sense of normalcy in the aftermath of intensity—always in the best way. And the endings? Perfect. They don’t leave you hanging in suspense but still leave you eager for the next book.

With 14 books so far, each well over a thousand pages, The Wandering Inn series shows no signs of slowing down—and honestly, I never want it to. Every moment is a treasure, and Hell's Wardens is one more unforgettable chapter in a series I’ll never stop loving. If you haven’t started reading yet, now is the time.

P.S. Big shoutout to Andrea Parsneau—she is definitely the voice of The Wandering Inn. Her range and depth bring every character to life, making the series even more extraordinary. She not only excels at voicing both female and male characters but also gives each species its own unique identity. Even within a single species, each character is distinct and easily identifiable. The emotional differences she conveys are remarkable—whether it’s anger, wrath, hope, or happiness, every emotion is pronounced and feels utterly real. Her narration is a gift that elevates the entire series to new heights.

RTC - Volume 6 done ✅

This is the final volume that is fully narrated by Andrea Parsenau.
I still can't quite believe that it's actually this far in already... And I don't know how to continue!
Her performance is a key point in why I came to adore this series as much as I do and what made me so invested; without it... I have no idea if this will be as enjoyable as it has been...
Also I don't want to read on a website :(((
It's gonna be so hard to decide what to do - but not now.
Still one final Andrea-book ahead and then the passing of the torch to Erin Bennett who will surely do a fantastic job.
And after that I must decide... We'll see.

Gonna write a lot more about TWI soon, as this is truly something special again that I'm happy to have stumbled into.
Oh and I'm definitely gonna rank these ^^

First half of this book was just plain, old, good Wandering Inn. Nice stories, some worldbuilding and great fun. Second part though...holly hell, its just sheer Epicness. You take kings Theoden speech for Rohirrims, take Maximus Decimus Meridius taking off his helm at arena or ending of Inffinity war. Multiply it few times...and you get bit close. Thats the stuff that is seldom seen in any media. For few hours you get such tension and so many emotions that you almost forget to breath. 11/10

This is the end of volume 6 and while this book was the best of the volume I think this was not Not the strongest of the volumes.

Expanded the world and added a ton of characters.

I love this series so much. I’m 14 (very long) books deep so at this point I’m committed, but I was starting to get worried that this series had lost its magic. The last two books were okay but not to the level of previous books. This book, however, brought the magic back!

Book fourteen is for sure in the top three best of the series. The emotions and stress left me breathless! The panic and fear that I felt in the last 30% nearly ruined me. No joke. This book had me manically pacing my house. I yelled…several times…loudly. I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t call for help. So few books make me feel as this book did. Books like this one are why I love reading.

I know I say this every time, but to me this series is an epic adventure that I wish more people would take. The emotional pull and love I feel towards some of these characters is unmatched. Please give this series a chance. Go in without expectations and just enjoy the ride!

P.S the narration of this series on audio is also the best I’ve ever listened to. So good!

That's more like it! I've felt like the series hit a mini-slump over the last several books. A slump for this series is equivalent to an excellent entry for most, so I don't want to oversell it. We returned to what drew me into this series in the first place: unexplainable emotional attachments to fictional characters because they represent a part of all of us.

While odd to say that a book that is about 1,000 pages felt like a shorter installment, this one just breezed by me. The largest focus was on our main cadre of characters in Liscor, but what once was a narrative that did not draw me in only to become one of the most fascinating for me also got some screen time: goblins. There were around a half-dozen or more story threads that we touched on to keep us honest and to keep these machinations in our minds. Each was well done, drove the narrative forward, and set us on paths that I cannot wait to explore.

The ending was something that I have been waiting on for around six or more books. And it did not disappoint.

I can't put into words why this book restored the magic for me, but it did. It would not surprise me if others did not enjoy this installment as much as any of the last few. I will just chalk it up to that certain je ne sais quoi that I cannot quantify. I can see some wishing we spent more time with the various sojourns that we made into distant lands from Liscor and characters both old and new. I wanted something a little closer to home so this was the right mix for me.

What can I say… Pirateaba has done it again. Without a doubt this takes the cake for the 2nd best book in the saga, so far. Unbelievable action taking place throughout the book, making pages fly easily for the reader. There’s even a point where you have no idea how some of the main characters get out of a specific apocalyptic scenario. Hells Warden 👿 earns its name in this volume of the Wandering Inn, and I will for sure be continuing to the next book. 📕

It was good.
But disappointed that Grimalkin Duveig didn't learn his lesson. Erin said that she needed him. He didn't believe her and some minutes later a guard called him. Saying sorry should have been the least or atleast saying he would trust her next time something like this happens.
Hoped that torren and Erin would be friends again. To bad.

Astounding

Every book hits like a hammer on my soul. I could barely drag myself away, there was so much cozy life and fun, then suddenly tears everywhere! Not sure if I want to power through to the next one, or savor the series a little longer.

The BEST book that I read this year and I read very good ones. Could I say more, like a proper review? Yes but i dont think that its a good idea. This series is something special, my special place and , i think, the same of a lot of people. Is a very long read? Yes, but its worth every word, every page.
You should try it.
Pd: In that chapter ( yeah ,that day 6.66 and , well, the early ones and the post one) i cried a lot.

With Hell’s Warden, Pirateaba continues Volume 6 of The Wandering Inn in a way that perfectly reflects the arc as a whole: a book of contrasts, featuring some truly impactful chapters alongside others that feel more disposable. This installment lacks the epic scope and intensity of Volume 5 and fits squarely within the uneven rhythm that characterizes much of Volume 6.

Still, the overarching narrative moves forward at a solid pace. The world keeps expanding, and the growing number of crossovers between characters who were once far removed from one another remains a genuine pleasure. These intersections gradually reveal the staggering scale of the Innworld and strengthen the sense of a vast, interconnected setting.

Pirateaba’s writing remains one of the series’ greatest strengths. The prose is remarkably fluid and easy to read, and the sheer enjoyment of the writing itself often compensates for the less engaging chapters.

The arc concludes without a major cliffhanger or an epic resolution, instead returning to the roots of the series. The Wandering Inn has always been about slices of life: friendships and rivalries, small conflicts, moments of joy and loss, rather than constant large-scale drama.

Pirateaba herself captures this feeling perfectly in the closing words of the volume:

“It’s been an interesting volume. Not one filled with war, or one overarching plot. It had high points and low points, good chapters, and bad chapters. But say it like that and it sounds like any other story. I hope you enjoyed it, though. Don’t you hate the book in your favorite series that just felt slow and you read or skip it when you go back to the series? I’d hate for Volume 6 to be that volume. My hope is that while some chapters might not be good, there are always more good than bad. And that you’re with me.”

Yes, Hell’s Warden may very well be that middle volume whose purpose is questioned in hindsight. But across these quieter moments and character-driven chapters, there is undeniably far more good than bad — and that, ultimately, is what keeps the journey worthwhile.

What can I say?

Two times in this book, I found myself curled in a blanket, tears in my eyes, clutching onto reality for dear life as either the best thing--or the worst thing--came to pass.

Any book that can rip such an emotional reaction out of me, heedless of anything, gets absolute full marks.

There's plenty I could say about the new Hell's Wardens, or the showdown with the other mages, but all of that was completely outstripped by what came out of the blood fields. And the aftermath? We've had Toren's (skeletal worker) epic arc develop across all these books, only to have a brief, and utterly shattering reunion with his old boss. This, I should say, nearly shattered ME.

There's a reason why this series has been widely, widely praised, and I'm completely on-board. Vast adventure, wonderful characters of all kinds, and extremely imaginative fantasy. And best of all, it's balanced in all things. Humor, comfort, earth-shattering tragedies, violence, friends, sympathetic villains, even stories surrounded by miscommunication AND (oddly enough) GOOD communication. It's so refreshing.

Anyway, I'm shook. Shaking. This book has me reeling.

My synesthesia makes me feel like I'm stroking cold steel, with the scent of magnolias on the air.

Personal note:
If anyone reading my reviews might be interested in reading my own SF, I'm going to be open to requests. Just direct message me in goodreads or email me on my site. I'd love to get some eyes on my novels.

Ohhhh myyy gods! This book Hell's Warden's bk 14 of the Wandering Inn-verse is the bestest book evarrr!!! I know I say that a lot especially when it comes to the Inn-verse books, but pirateaba has what it takes to continue writing winners!!! So let me reiterate Hell's Warden's is my newest favoritest bestest book evarrr! Whether it's just telling us a tale of Ryoka Griffin accidentally swallowing a bug, while making a delivery, or maybe a follow up where we find out Rabbit Eater actually survived and what he's up to! I Want to Know... as pirateaba's story unfolds around you. And I love ❤ every minute, simply spellbound! And wow The Horns of Hammerod what a story! I'm embraced when I step into the Inn, filled with comfort, friendship, good food and magic. As the magic plays out there is laughter and tears 😢 too. As pirateaba weaves together all the story-threads tighter and yeah while resolving some issues they leave plenty more unanswered, so their fans always yearn for more!!! So What if the audiobook is 26hrs long! It's never enough!!!
So yeah go grab the audio and sit back so you can listen to Andrea Parsneau tell you the best story evarrr!!!

This is going to be a universal review of the series which I will cut and paste because I read all 14 books in this series (so far). They are all available at the Wandering Inn website for free if you read them as they were written as a web published serial. They are addicting. The basic premise (see my review of book 1) is that people from our world have been transported, solo or in groups, to another world where the ground rules resemble those of a role playing game like Dungeons and Dragons. Erin Solstice is the main character in the first book, but new characters are introduced throughout the book. Goblins, Drakes, Gnolls (bear-like), Lizard People, Humans, Flying Garudas, Antinium, and Dullahans are the people of the world, all of whom are sentient. Magic abounds, but technology is in short supply. This is fascinating world building. I believe that the author is currently at around 10 million words in the series. Much of it is dialogue, which makes for faster reading, but be prepared to give a significant portion of your reading time to these books.

This volume delivers a masterclass in escalation. The stakes grow heavier, the consequences sharper, and the true cost of survival becomes painfully clear. What initially appears to be a nuisance, annoying, troublesome wizards, evolves into a genuinely deadly conflict with far-reaching implications. Just when the reader’s full attention is locked onto that threat, Pirateaba expertly introduces an even greater danger, forcing the characters to confront challenges on an entirely new scale.

Without venturing into spoilers, Hell’s Wardens serves as a deeply satisfying resolution, less an ending but rather a close of a significant chapter for the Horns in particular. This volume marks a turning point, bringing long-running tensions to a meaningful culmination while setting the stage for what comes next.

One of the better fight scenes in the series takes place during this book, some storyline progress that had been really slow finally happens. Overall a really strong entry in the series.

The cast of characters has expanded to the point where telling a compelling story that includes all of them just isn’t going to happen anymore, so the author is focusing each book more on a single location or two and the characters that are important to the story there. I like this approach and I think it’s pretty successful. I miss the characters who aren’t present in each book when they’re gone, but I think trying to spin too many stories at once could get overwhelming for both the author and the reader.

2024/11/25 Notes: 1st Audio Read

Great narration by Andrea Parsneau! =)

Hell's Wardens is the 3rd part of Volume 6 of the webserial.
For anyone that's trying to keep the original website volumes to audiobooks in mind.

It's been a few years since I've read the series online. Not surprised that I don't remember exactly what happens in each volume without a look at the table of contents (on website) to get a refresher.

The wrap up for Volume 6 was great! It was one of the prime moments that expressed all the pros & cons of WI for me. It's hard to appreciate the battles in audio format. It doesn't hit quite as hard as when I read it online.

This is one of the strongest books in TWI series brought to life by the superb narration of the talented Andrea Parsneau. It was non stop from start to finish just when you think you know where the story and plot is going - oh no - it’s not that straight forward and it all changes! PirateAba is brilliant at weaving the story, building this world and bringing depth and growth to these characters who we have now spent an enormous amount of time and are truly invested in. It’s so addictive and despite its length it doesn’t feel too long or drawn out but is exactly how it should be. The ending sets up the next book and makes us want to continue this amazing story

Yet another wonderful addition to the Wandering Inn series; we get more of Erin’s eccentricity changing how the people of Liscor live, the thoughts of a powerful necromancer lurking in the shadows, a mad Minotaur tries to find honor and redemption in the face of death, allies thought long dead reappear to make their own mark in the world, and a skeleton wrought with guilt decides to confront his greatest enemy… the woman he cares for more than anything. Looking forward to see how the series continues, who will rise up as the next threat against Liscor and its people, and to see how our cavalcade of characters develop as a result of the events faced in this volume.

Is Ryoka finally starting to mature? Might she become a likeable character? Well, I won't hold my breath.

Otherwise another excellent outing. The first half is low key standard Inn stuff. People talking. People fighting. Low key politics. But then the second half! It's a wonderful combat story of struggle and sacrifice. Learning and growth.

Stuff from the last book comes to the fore. Epic drama. Epic Combat. Epic emotions. Epic ruin.

Who will go where? What will the mains do? But also, sigh, another bad guy introduced. More distant machinations. More hooks for who knows how long from now.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Possibly the finest segment of The Wandering Inn converted to Audible. It was perfect. Pirateaba has mastered the character-driven story. She makes us really care about most of the characters, a vast array. I can't say enough good things about this compelling section of the Pirateaba Legendarium. (She deserves an honor from Tolkien and what he did.) It's been a while since I read this. I'd forgotten how hateful Montressa was, among other details. Andrea Parseneau was at her very best, along with Pirateaba.

Short review: It was OK, end was rushed. Doesn't stick to his own rules. And the technicalities of last fight really canceled out the suspension of disbelief.

Really contrary to a first glorious fight in a first book (where horns died), here basically nobody important died. The fight was just a vehicle to move the plot further without too much consequences. The duels were awesome and then it was meh...
