We all remember the Little Golden Books from when we were kids. They are back with a new biography series, featuring athletes, pop stars, leaders, or celebrities that kids would be interested in learning about. With the WNBA season starting up this weekend, it’s the perfect time to share the newest addition to the Little Golden Book Biography series, CAITLIN CLARK.

Caitlin Clark is a household name, but here in Iowa, we consider her our gal. Our family watched the Iowa Women’s Basketball games, cheering on Caitlin and her teammates, and now we look forward to another season of cheering her on with the Indiana Fever.

In this book, kids will learn how Caitlin became the powerhouse basketball player she is now. As a young girl, she played sports with her brothers and dreamed of being a Hawkeye. She excelled in all team sports, setting records across all Iowa high schools. Something I didn’t already know was that she also played the piano.

The book covers how she chose to focus on basketball and ultimately became an Iowa Hawkeye and then chosen in the WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever. The illustrations are really quite accurate and look like Caitlin. The story is thorough but short, so that even the youngest fans will enjoy reading it or having it read to them.

At just $5.57 (price subject to change), this is a book everyone can own and feel like they have a piece of Caitlin Clark’s history.

Caitlin Clark will probably be Mavis’s favorite basketball player someday, so her uncle got her some info on her early with this Little Golden Book.

Moral: Work hard at your talents and be the very best you can be so you are victorious.

Length: There were multiple pages in here that had enough words to be their own Wikipedia page. So it’s pretty long - especially for a woman who has played exactly one professional season.

Favorite Line: “She liked to play - and she liked to win.”

Overall Impression: The thing I respected about this book - and Clark as a role-model - is the emphasis on winning. I love basketball, but sucked as a kid. So I didn’t play. Far too many parents want kids to have fun no matter what and just play. No… let’s play to win; winning and competition are fun. Clark and her parents get that and it’s on display repeatedly in this book that follows her successes from her young age, even when competing with boys. There are no pictures of kids getting orange slices or having pizza parties. Just a lot of practice, playing and winning. We’ll return to this Little Golden frequently so that Mqvis learns winning is everything.

Read aloud for Basketball with Pat. Caitlin plays the piano! New info to me! Wordy Little Golden Book Biography focused on Caitlin’s youngster years and how she followed her dreams with her supportive family (father) at her side. Almost sepia toned images gives the reader the impression that this time of just a few years ago is almost ancient history. Best picture: Caitlin on The Pentacrest in her Iowa Hawkeye sweatshirt.

Though wordy, this picture-book biography chronicles the rise basketball player Caitlin Clark to superstardom. Who knew that Clark plays piano? Illustrations tend to resemble the people they are supposed to portray, with a few flattering liberties.
