Tomes & Tea Mysteries #2

Booked for Revenge

Rate this book
Following in her mother Daisy’s footsteps, Jazzi Swanson has transformed her rural New York bookshop and tea bar, Tomes & Tea, into a must-stop destination in the lakeside resort town of Belltower Landing, New York, where, in addition to her talent for tea, Jazzi has shown a skill for sleuthing when trouble is brewing . . .

The Gentleman’s Bake-off is not only good for the town’s tourism, it’s bound to boost business at Tomes & Tea. The celebrity judges of the contest—chefs, bakers, restauranteurs—will all be signing their cookbooks at Jazzi’s shop. But with all the big personalities and inflated egos, she’s starting to wonder if there are—as the saying goes—too many cooks.

The competition is far from killer, with mostly residents and neighbors vying for bragging rights. But when local photographer Finn Yarrow takes first place, someone commits a most ungentlemanly act. Jazzi’s partner Dawn finds the man bludgeoned next to his prizewinning Black Forest Cake.

Between the judges and the contestants, the bookshop shop owner soon finds herself steeped in suspects as she tries to solve the crime. Was the murder connected to the bake-off—or did the shutterbug perhaps photograph something he shouldn’t have? Either way, Jazzi is determined to find a killer who’s trying to have their cake and eat it too . . .

I always loved Karen Rose Smith's Daisy Teahouse Garden series and was intrigued when she gave Jazzi her own series set in upstate New York, Tomes and Teas is a shop Jazzi opened with her best friend from college, Dawn. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I enjoyed this new one even more! Jazzy and Dawn are two smart young women, really trying to understand themselves and the lives they want while building a successful business. With a men's baking contest as part of a summer celebration in their tourist town, the ladies are busy and promoting their business by hosting the four celebrity judges and selling their cookbooks in a signing at the shop. They think little of the tension between some of the judges and contestants until Dawn finds the body of one of the contestants in the competition's kitchen. What follows is a wonderful mystery, some nice summer weather, and the growth of the two main characters and their group of friends and employees. I enjoyed this book very much. Thanks to #Netgally, #Kensingtonbooks, and the author for an opportunity to read! #BookedforRevenge #ATomesandTeamystery #KarenRossSmith #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader

Jazzi is helping host a Gentleman Bake off by featuring the judges and their books at Tomes and Tea. When one of the contestants is found dead with his cake smeared on his face and Jazzi's partner is the one who discovers the body, Jazzi is drawn into finding the killer. This is a good read and a great second book in the series. I enjoy these characters and their continuing relationships. I look forward to more adventures with this group!

Belltower Landing is holding a Gentleman’s Bake-off with celebrity judges, book signings, and excitement galore. When a body is discovered as the winner is about to be announced, Jazzi Swanson knows she has to investigate, especially as her best friend, Dawn, found the victim. With suspects galore, will the killer be unmasked or will suspicion cling to everyone who had anything to do with the bake-off, including Dawn, their bookshop, and other locals who are desperate to move on?

This is the second book in Karen Rose Smith's spin-off Tomes and Tea mystery series, but although I enjoyed it, it fell flat for me towards the end. The killer’s motive was sound, but why voluntarily reveal an important clue only they knew about when without it nothing could have been proved? It is a shame because the back stories are entertaining, definitely held my interest, and ensured I want to know what happens next.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Kensington Publishing/Kensington Cozies, but the opinions expressed are my own.

#BookedforRevenge #NetGalley is the second book in a fresh new series.
Jazzy is living her life, enjoying her independence and being an owner in her own shop.
Things go wrong when a dead body is discovered, and a murder investigation uncovers some harsh feelings.
I like this series and I'm enjoying getting to know Jazzy in a new light.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

I was worried this might be too trendy for my liking, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was the perfect cozy mystery that I needed. Now what I really want is a real-life Tomes and Tea where I can sip delicious tea, nibble a scone, and browse books to my heart’s content.

I loved this second episode in the Tomes and Tea Mysteries series! It was my pleasure to learn more about our main characters, Jazzi and Dawn. I was delighted to watch their kittens, Zander and Freya, do everything with the joys of adored, bonded kittens. The young women have made significant changes to the income of their bookstore and tea shop by introducing several new programs, and I applaud how they worked through a challenge to their friendship.

This is an excellent spinoff from the author’s “Daisy’s Tea Garden” series. Jazzi is the younger of the two daughters of Daisy Swanson and her late husband. Daisy is a wise, loving mother, as evidenced by Jazzi’s maturity and wisdom in business, friendships, and her choice to not date for a while. Daisy’s skills in helping solve several murders taught Jazzi how to do the same, even though she had no intention of doing so again. Jazzi is content living where Dawn grew up, especially learning to excel at the water sports on the lake.

Jazzi and her business partner and best friend, Dawn, assisted the four judges of the upcoming Gentlemen’s Bakeoff when the chefs/ authors had a book signing at Tomes and Tea prior to the bakeoff. At the end of the competition eagerly waited at the end to hear who won. Jazzi heard Dawn scream, and ran to her even as Dawn ran out of the building with the kitchen. Dawn saw Finn, one of the contestants, lying on the kitchen floor after being brutally murdered.

Most people in Belltower Landing knew Finn through his photography at weddings and for school photos of students of all ages. He also worked in nearby cities when requested. He was well-liked and an honest, fair businessman. Jazzi didn’t know him or his wife well, but had befriended his wife after his death.

Dawn’s parents and brother are pressuring her regarding their expectations of her extensive participation in preparing for and opening a satellite store for their business in Naples. Dawn was adopted, as had Jazzi. Jazzi found her birth mother several years ago, but Dawn’s mother has very strong concerns about Dawn seeking her birth parents. Dawn’s mom is also very concerned for Dawn, who has turned inside herself since finding Finn.

The detective questioned Dawn so many times that she is rattled, wondering if she is a suspect. Police also have interviewed the chefs/ judges repeatedly, and only allows one of the three from out of town to return to their home. The case that Jazzi wanted no part of began to consume her thoughts, as Dawn will find no peace until the murderer is caught.

This was a complex mystery, with several possible suspects. I wasted time on a couple red herrings when I couldn’t see past them. When the real killer was revealed, I was shocked, especially at the cold-blooded motive! I appreciated the resolution of the murder tremendously, as well as matters of the heart. Two young men had been quite interested in Jazzi, one since Jazzi spent summer breaks from college working at Dawn’s parents’ shop. She just might be ready for the one I’m rooting for, and Dawn has attracted the interest of another fine young man. Their potential relationships are balanced, not overtaking their lives. I highly recommend this cozy mystery; it is satisfying in every way!

From a thankful heart: I received a pre-publication copy of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

I am so disappointed in myself for not realizing that Karen Rose Smith had created a spin off from her Daisy’s Tea Garden Mystery series. Booked for Revenge is the second in the new series and it picks up with Daisy Swenson's younger daughter Jazzi, moving to a new town and becoming her own person, while also utilizing the skills she learned from her mom and stepdad Jonas on how to sleuth. Jazzi has a little bit of a secret, no one except for Detective Mitford knows about the ten murder cases that Jazzi’s mom, Daisy, helped the Willow Creek detectives solve. While this is a spin off, it shows itself to be a separate series and as a stand-alone, there is no need to read the series starter or the Tea Garden series to enjoy both the characters and the mystery.

Part of Jazzi’s past story is her journey as an adopted child who goes in search of her birth mother. She is the first character that I have come across with such a backstory. It is a unique way to show how Jazzi developed sleuthing skills of her own. Skills that she uses to help Dawn, her roommate, business partner, and best friend. Dawn may not be a suspect, but she is suffering from a bit of PTSD from finding the body of baking contestant and professional photographer Finn Yarrow. Detective Milford warns Jazzi to not get involved like she did last time but Jazzi cannot ignore the angst that Dawn is experiencing. Angst that is causing waves between Dawn and family, family that are a little weary of Jazzi and her possible influence over Dawn.

There are plenty of suspects and possible motives. The victim was in a heated argument at one point with another contestant, was it related to the contest or something else? As a photographer and videographer, Finn was most likely a very observant person. Did he see, photograph, or film something that led to his demise, or is it something else entirely. Jazzi and the Tea & Tomes book club crew do a very good job of analyzing the suspects and the aspects of this crime. I would be remiss if I did not make mention of the interesting aspect of the Tea & Tomes book club. Historically, members of a book club read the same, agreed upon book, and then discuss what they did or didn’t like about the book. These book club members each read a different book. I think it might be interesting and fun to take part in such a group. This format seems to have even enticed Oliver, the owner of The Wild Kangaroo, to attend a meeting and not just because there are snacks for all to enjoy.

This is a well written cozy that checks all the boxes from cute kittens, supportive friends, and even a romantic possibility (note to the author, thank you for not making this a triangle). I will need to go back and read the series starter and maybe make some Maple Pecan cookies or peach and pecan muffins. I am looking forward to the next one.

Book Review: Booked for Revenge by Karen Rose Smith

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!

This read was a bit different from my usual choices, and I appreciated the change of pace. Booked for Revenge gave me major Harriet the Spy meets Veronica Mars vibes, which was super nostalgic in the best way.

The pacing was on the slower side, so it took me a little longer to get through. The plot has a great concept at its core, but at times, it felt like there were filler sections that didn’t push the story forward. I didn’t realize this was the second book in a series, but the author included enough context that it wasn’t hard to follow.

The main characters are enjoyable, and the story weaves in themes of life challenges, love, adoption, and uncovering truths. That said, I sometimes felt the characters were missing a certain spark. For instance, despite the main female character's previous involvement in cases—and her mother's role too—she never really suspects the actual murderer. The reveal didn’t fully land for me and felt a bit random. But since this is more of a cozy mystery than a full-blown thriller, I can see how the tone may have influenced that direction.

The small-town charm is a highlight, and the characters are easy to root for. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy a lighter mystery with a romantic touch and don't want an overly complex plot.

While the story has its strengths, some parts felt overly detailed or like they were setting up for the next book rather than standing strongly on their own. Still, it was an enjoyable read, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy mystery with heart.

Final rating: 3.4/5 stars

"Booked for Revenge" is book #2 in "Tomes & Teas Mysteries" by Karen Rose Smith.

A Gentleman's Bake-Off Contest takes a deadly turn when one of the contestants is found dead. Squabbles amongst the judges and contestants who may be holding secrets make finding the culprit more challenging for the local police. Jazzi's roommate and business partner Dawn found the victim and is struggling to deal with what happened. Her parents - especially her mom is - over protective and that makes things even harder.

Jazzi is trying to help Dawn deal with everything but also doing some sleuthing to get to the truth. Of course she inadvertently puts herself in danger before a killer is caught.

I really wasn't sure who the culprit was till near the end as there were several suspects among the judges, contestants and others who had had interactions with the victim. A few well placed red herrings and subplots kept the story interesting.

I do like the core characters of this series. Naturally, Dawn has a lot to process after finding the body. Jazzi is generally pretty cautious with her investigating and even more so in a possible relationship but I do like the chemistry with her and Oliver.

I did note what seems to be an error on page 11 of the Kindle edition. It said that the Bake-Off recipe entrants had been narrowed down to twelve. Two paragraphs later, it said the preliminary judging would be with the TEN entrants. How did it go from twelve to ten? Had two dropped out or is this just a typo?

Aside from that, it was a fun cozy mystery read. 4/5 stars.

A cozy mystery set in a charming lakeside town, Booked for Revenge delivers all the ingredients for a fun, small-town whodunit—delicious treats, a beloved bookshop, and a puzzling murder. Jazzi Swanson, bookshop owner and amateur sleuth, once again finds herself caught up in a crime when a local photographer is found bludgeoned next to his prizewinning Black Forest Cake. With a mix of celebrity judges, competitive bakers, and plenty of suspects, Jazzi has her hands full as she tries to uncover the truth.

The setting of Belltower Landing is wonderfully cozy, and the bookshop/tea bar concept adds a warm, inviting atmosphere. Jazzi is a likable protagonist, and her investigative skills make for an engaging read. The mystery itself has enough twists to keep readers intrigued, though the pacing drags in some places. The cast of characters—especially the judges and contestants—brings plenty of personality, but at times, the "too many cooks" issue applies to the storytelling as well, with some elements feeling underdeveloped.

What a fun, heartwarming, well written cozy mystery that is complex and not cookie cutter in style. The plot has several suspects full of personality, and possible motives - all very plausible enough to keep the reader guessing 'who done it.'

I loved how the book had enough descriptions to create a visual in my mind without overdoing it. The cute kittens add exactly what kittens add- fun. The sub plots touch on supportive friendships, strong women characters, adoption and whether or not to search for biological parents all while the murder solving plot is moving forward.

One very novel concept introduced was a fun twist on book clubs. This book's book club has the members all reading whatever book they find interesting and then come together to share their thoughts on their book. So several books are discussed at every meeting. Definitely worth exploring more books by Karen Rose Smith.

Like her adopted mother in Pennsylvania, murders seem to have an affinity for bookstore owner Jazzi. The backstory in this new series seems pleasant and low key, and even though the murder is contentious it is not premeditated. The investigation moves along well with characters who seem to be ordinary people under extraordinary circumstances. I enjoyed this one every bit as much as book 1 in the Tomes & Tea Mysteries.

1/5 stars: This is the second entry in Smith's Tomes & Tea Mysteries series, which is a Literary Culinary Cozy Mystery set in Upper State New York and follows a bookshop and tea bar owner who finds herself turning sleuth after her best friend and business partner discovers a local photographer and recent bake-off winner bludgeoned to death. Between the celebrity judges and the local contestants, she's steeped in suspects and will have to work fast to figure out who's trying to have their cake and eat it too. Smith's writing and character work are well done. Smith touches on some sensitive topics; so take care and CWs. Unfortunately, this just wasn't a book for me; leading me to DNF it at 28%.

Booked for Revenge is the second in Karen Rose Smith's Tomes and Tea Mystery series. Jazzi Swanson and her friend, Dawn, are hoping to boost their bookshop sales when the Belltower Landing cook-off brings in celebrity chefs and judges. Before they can blink there is a murder and poor Dawn finds the body of a competitor. Even though Jazzi does not want to be known as a crime solver, like her mom, she has no choice but to investigate in order to sooth Dawn's upset. And the hunt is on for the killer!

I enjoyed this cozy mystery with its quick pace, strong storyline, and well plotted mystery. I would recommend this book to others who enjoy cozy/light mystery reading.

Booked for Revenge is the 2nd book in the Tomes & Tea Mysteries and it is a pleasant cozy mystery. The characters are likable and there are plenty of descriptions of the characters and the scenery. There are a lot of characters introduced quickly which was a bit overwhelming. It might help to read the first book beforehand plus it is a spinoff from another series. Jazzi Swanson and her best friend Dawn are partners in a bookstore and tea shop. They are hosting some events for the judges and contestants participating in The Gentleman's Bakeoff. Several of the people involved don't get along and then a local contestant ends up dead. The story picked up somewhat and the mystery kept me guessing. Jazzi has a potential romance which adds to the story. Overall, this ended up being a good cozy mystery. #BookedForRevenge #Tomes&TeaMysteries #KensingtonCozies

I’d say 3.5 stars. I like Jazzi and Dawn. I like the setting of Tomes & Teas and Belltower Landing. Both are comforting settings.
The pacing of this series is slower. I find myself getting a little impatient when there is so much of the story revolves around Dawn’s relationship with her parents and whether Dawn will look for her biological parents. Jazzi is also adopted, and two books in I’m not sure why it is such a big part of the storyline. There are plenty of issues to discuss other than that like adulting, building a successful business, dating, and hello… murder.
I was surprised by the outcome of the death.
I enjoyed reading Booked for Revenge and visiting Belltower Landing, which seems like a fun place.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.

When I read the first book I swore I was gonna get back to the Daisy’s Tea Garden series and try to get that more caught up, but here’s the second Tomes & Tea and I’m still no closer. Although reading it did make me interested in continuing the original series. Jazzi’s a great character and definitely learned a lot from her mom who’d sleuthed when Jazzi was just a teenager.

I’m sure Daisy would’ve been proud of Jazzi during the showdown and what she did to the perp to get away from them. Jazzi and Oliver were cute together as well as Dawn and her new guy. Not sure who I prefer Jazzi with, but I know I don’t wanna see this going into a triangle. Not a fan of triangles at all.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

Jazzi and Dawn together own Tomes & Tea in a resort town. The Gentleman’s Bake-off is creating a stir. The celebrity judges will all be signing their cookbooks at the Tomes & Tea which is bound to boost sales for the two women. It’s all great, until one of the contestants is found bludgeoned to death. Dawn is the unlucky one to have found the body, and her parents wish they could make her give up the shop and return to their home. Jazzi wants to help her friend, and it seems the best way to do that is to find the killer. But can she do it before the killer strikes again? This is an entertaining cozy, with likable characters and intriguing plot. A touch of romance is in the offing, adding interest. This is the second book in the series, and it will interesting to see where the author takes these characters in the next book.

‘Booked for Revenge’ fits the mold of a cozy mystery: intriguing small-town dynamics, likable female lead who owns her own business, hints of romance, and a murder to solve. I jumped into this without having read either ‘Murder Marks the Page’ (Book 1 in the series) or the Daisy Tea Garden Mystery series it was spun off from. Even so, I was drawn in by the puzzles in this charming lakeside resort town. I would recommend reading at least the first book in this series though, because I could tell Karen Rose Smith had done nice development with some of these characters previously.

Special thanks to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Tomes and Tea and.... another murder??
Jazzy and her best friend Dawn are helping organize a bake-off with celebrity chef judges and like any group of big personalities, people are going to butt heads. But when a contestant ends up dead and foul play is suspected, Jazzy can't help but to follow in her mother's foot steps and ask questions. With an upset best friend, pressure from the celebrity chefs, and a budding romance, she has her hands full. With the murderer on the loose and her life potentially being threatened, Jazzy still has to focus on her shop, so she needs this all wrapped up and fast.
I like these stories, but I think the audio narrator sounds too old for our main character, I think i'll try to read the next one with my eyes and see if i enjoy it more

A traditional cozy set in rural New York. Jazzi is the owner of Tomes and Tea, a combination bookstore and tea bar. This is book two in the series, and after solving one murder, Jazzi is shocked to find herself wrapped up in another. The town is having a bake off and one of the bakers is found murdered, and it was Jazzi's business partner, Dawn. She struggles with what she found, and it is up to Jazzi to find who committed the crime to help Dawn get over trauma. I liked the story and am looking forward to the next in the series. Things take a turn when the winner, Finn Yarrow, is found murdered next to his entry. Jazzi doesn't need anything making her shop look bad so she decides to look into the murder herself. Why a four? I am still trying to feel as comfortable with this series as The Tea Garden Series of which Jazzy was a lead character. Different setting, people, and like the author, Jazzy is finding an independent fulfilling life outside of The Tea Garden Series. Possibly the author too is finding the right voice for independent Jazzy. Describing all of the characters clothing worked for the Tea Garden Series but as of yet, I am not convinced it works for Tomes and Tea Mysteries. However, I am definitely looking forward to #3 as I am convinced that KRS will find the balance she had with the Tea Garden Series.

The baking contest should have brought more business to Tomes and Tea but what is actually brought was....murder! And now Jazzi and her partner Dawn are investigating to find out who killed Finn, the photographer with more than a few secret enemies. This second in the series, which is a spin off of another beloved series from Smith (don't worry- it's fine as a standalone) sees more worldbuilding and back story for the two women especially Dawn. The mystery is classic cozy with a few nice red herrings. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read and I'm looking forward to the next one.

anytime you have a competition things will get ugly. In this case someone was dead but had nothing to do with the bake off. Everyone was a suspect. Dawn discovered the body and went into a tail spin and her parents did not make it any easier.
It was interesting knowing that Jazzi and Dawn wanted to know their birth parents. Jazzi found hers and Dawn is still in limbo. It is a surprise as to who did the deed in this book. Of course, we wonder who Jazzi will be going steady with - Parker or Oliver. Only the next book will tell us......

Jazzi and Dawn are working to make a go of their book/tea shoppe. They are even helping to sponsor a looking cooking competition. Alas, everything goes awry when Dawn finds one of the contestants has been murdered. Jazzi has inherited her adopted mother's ability to solves crimes. The local detective warns her to keep her nose out, but she just can't help want to find who did it and ease the pain of her friend. A good second book in this series. Thanks to Net Galley for the arc.

This is a spinoff of another great series. I like that it has just enough mentions of those folks and circumstances, but we get to live Jazzi’s life in this series. I can definitely see traits of her adopted mom in Jazzi. I enjoy her relationships with all her friends and fur babies. I’m like Jazzi, I never would have guessed our culprit. I loved that! I received an ARC of this book, but my opinion is my own.

This is a quick, fun read. The mystery is fine and logical, though I found myself not caring a whole lot about who killed the victim. I like the subplot of Jazzi and Dawn, her roommate/business partner, and Dawn's parents. There's lots of tension over adoption and birth parents there, which offers some depth to the book.

A nice, escapist read.

"Booked for Revenge (Tomes & Tea Mystery #2)" by Karen Rose Smith being the second book in this series that is a spin off series is fairly standalone. However I feel it would be beneficial to read the series where Jazzi's mom is the main character. They kept referring back to her mom's investigations and run ins with the cops. It felt like I needed more info to understand the inside joke sort of things sometimes.

Jazzi and her business partner, Dawn, are hosting some cooking celebrities for book signings and the town is having the celebrities judge a baking contest. Unfortunately, one of the contestants is found dead with his entry still beside him. Dawn was the one to discover him and becomes a bit traumatized. This means Jazzi has to investigate so Dawn can move on. Jazzi accidentally stumbles upon the culprit. They were my top suspect. I didn't totally see that motive though.
