رویکرد محوری فلسفه‌ی هنر تبیین منشأ زیست‌شناختی هنر در مقایسه با مبدأ فرهنگی آن است. پدیده‌ی هنر به دستاوردهای فرهنگ غربی محدود نمی‌شود و از دست‌ساخته‌های گوناگون چنین برمی‌آید که هنرِ سایر فرهنگ‌ها نیز غنای چشمگیری دارد و شایسته‌ی تأمل فلسفی است. گرچه پیدایش مفهوم مدرن هنر به اروپای قرن هجدهم بازمی‌گردد، سنت‌های هنری دیگری نیز در جهان وجود دارند که ارزشیابی و ارج‌شناسی آثار آن‌ها مستلزم آگاهی از اندیشه‌های بنیادی این سنت‌هاست. افزون بر این، جایگاه برجسته‌ی هنر در فلسفه‌ی معاصر مبیّن ضرورت آشنایی با مسائل محوری فلسفه‌ی هنر است. نویسنده در این کتاب با ایضاح پیچیدگی‌های مسائلی مانند تعریف هنر، هستی‌شناسی هنر، شیوه‌های متنوع تفسیر اثر هنری، مفهوم بازنمایی، و بیانگری عاطفی می‌کوشد با استناد به آرای فیلسوفان برجسته‌ی هنر، ابعاد گوناگون هریک از آن‌ها را به بحث بگذارد. نحوه‌ی وجودی منحصربه‌فرد هریک از هنرها موضوع جالب و جدیدی است که فصلی مجزا درباره‌ی هستی‌شناسی رسانه‌های مختلف هنری به آن اختصاص یافته است. بازنمایی و بیانگری هم از قدیم‌ترین موضوعات فلسفه‌ی هنرند که گرچه ریشه‌هایشان به یونان باستان بازمی‌گردد، فیلسوفان معاصر همچنان به آن‌ها توجه دارند. شرح روشن همه‌ی این مسائل و مباحث، کتاب فلسفه‌ی هنر را به راهنمایی مفید برای هنرمندان و هنردوستان و هنرپژوهان مبدل کرده است.

Decent-ish overview of questions in Aesthetics. I don't think it does as good a job as it could motivating why the questions are interesting. I also think it will be unappealing to people who come to from art but without an interest in philosophy might be turned off because the questions are explored too openly, too philosophically. *I am a professional philosopher so I don't say this lightly.

A very good introduction to many key issues in the philosophy of the arts. As with all introductions, it did not go into certain interesting topics (such as the problematic way in which pornography blends fact and fiction which brought to mind for me the work of Andrea Dworkin) in as much depth as I would have preferred, but it is a solid introduction to the topic.

Informative, well-written, and interesting. Davies calls on countless historical aesthetics texts to portray all sides of debates in aesthetic theory. I am really enjoying this, and it has helped me a lot in my Art Theory course.
