One planet, two continents, divided by more than a vast ocean.
In Anthar, a radical experiment changes the course of history; a vital resource is destroyed, a planet disappears, and an ancient, sentient death is unknowingly awoken in the depths of space.
In Nephia, the Augurs of the Realms gather for the first time in a century to discuss the dire warnings from God. But some whisper of the Ulmar – God’s ultimate warrior – prophesied to unite the world against annihilation.
To restore balance and avoid war, an Antharian expedition team must journey to Nephia to retrieve a God Stone.
G.G. Ross lives in South Wales with his family. His debut novel, The God Stone: Book One, is the first instalment in a long-imagined series. He is quietly but wilfully completing the trilogy. He is very grateful for any reviews and will happily answer any questions or requests from readers. You can find him here, or on Facebook and Instagram. Happy reading!
Man was this book so good!! We got action, adventure, and amazing world building! The characters were all greatly written and I enjoyed all of them, even the less savory characters. The mix of genres was very well done!! My only complaint was it seemed a lot, and I mean a lot of things seemed to take place at the very end, and now I’m left wondering when the heck the next book will be out so I know what happens to everyone 😭😭😭
I recently signed up for a couple of free e-book newsletters, and as with all free books, they have been hit or miss. I have honestly gotten so many free books in the last few months that there is almost no way I will ever be able to read them all haha. I chose this one from the recent downloads at random, and WOW, it did not disappoint!! How does this only have a handful of reviews on both Amazon and Goodreads?? This is a slumbering gem and so well crafted. I was mildly distraught when I went to immediately download the next book only to discover that it doesn't yet exist. Please, G. G. Ross, please tell me that it's coming soon!
From the first page, I could tell that this novel was thoughtfully crafted, and it's clear that the author has spent a lot of time building his world and piecing every inch of it together. This is the type of book you want to pore over maps of, watch lore deep dive videos, and fancast all the best characters. It is an exquisite blend of fantasy and sci-fi, merged so seamlessly that you feel hardly remember that the genres should be completely at odds with one another. There is a wonderfully fleshed out cast of characters on both sides, and their coming together in the climaxes of the novel are artfully executed and not the slightest bit disappointing.
My main criticism would be that there are so many characters that it is sometimes difficult to keep track of everyone. I would find that with the constantly switching point of view, especially towards the end, that I would forget who someone was until a page or two into the new chapter. Some characters are referenced by both their first and last names, which could add to the confusion. This only really happened with some of the lesser characters, and not so much with the main Antharian team or Gadryon, Orla, and Elchora.
From a mature content perspective, there is occasional strong language, and one spot with a somewhat graphic sex depiction - however, it's a single paragraph summary of an event that happened long before the actual setting of the book, and it's very easy to gloss over. The novel is incorrectly - in my opinion - labeled for 12-18 year olds on Amazon, and I would definitely cast this as an adult book. It can be quite violent in places, and as I said, there is strong language. It would make an amazing TV show in my opinion - c'mon, Prime!
All in all, I cannot stress how highly I recommend this book. If you need a fresh world to dive into, please consider picking it up and adding to its reviews. It definitely deserves a LOT more recognition that its evidently getting. It's only a few dollars for the e-book, and it's available for free on Kindle Unlimited. As with me, it also appears to sometimes go on sale and you can snag it for free if you're lucky. I would absolutely pay full price for its sequels, which I sincerely hope are on the horizon.
an astonishingly good book! Epic tale just like i love to read. I hate that it's a series & those most often bore me but glad i read this first one. I don't normally read epic fantasy/sci fi written by men because usually much too violent & gruesome. This too had lots of violence but most of it wasn't gratuitous & gory details were used sparingly. I will at least read the samples of books 2 & 3 when available because this guy writes really well.
As a debut Novel, I think G.G.Ross absolutely nailed it! The balance of sci-fi and classic fantasy was so well done! A multiple POV, Ross managed to keep control of his very well crafted characters. There was so much humanity and real life to each and every one of them. His ability to capture moments of humour and vulnerability within the dialogue was just fantastic. Really well rounded.
Great amounts of action, written very well and not overdone. What’s really lovely is also the writing is beautiful all the way through, about a third in, you can really tell Ross had relaxed into his writing style. Overarching heavy themes but easy reading!
Left on the edge of my seat with so many more questions than answers, I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2!
I’ve never written a review, but this book forced me to the keyboard. The first thing I noticed: The author slid into the story low-key with a minimum of characters, allowing me time to absorb the story with the people I would come to know. Their names were reasonable and easy to keep track of.
The setting, although futuristic was believable to my own time and layman’s knowledge. I felt comfortable here. There was empathy among the characters from the beginning. Their responses to events were natural and acceptable. No shocking reveals or pivots. Steady linear story-telling without boredom. No long descriptions of clothing, environment or non-essential history. A smooth flow of action and decision, moving quickly.
The people were obviously mature thinking adults. No silly conclusions or decisions just to make the story move forward. Psychological workings of the human mind are explained in clear concise language and will spark resonance in your own psyche.
The ‘old world’ civilizations are built on the foundations of the usual God-Savior/Slave-King/witch-priest ethos. The author gives these relationships different names, but they are ‘not’ un-pronounceable names that skew the mind into nonsense. A hole that the mind must dig out of before it can march on. Much appreciated by this reader.
However, in order to establish the relationship of the speaker to the named entity, the author throws this reader out of the story by sometimes using the first name and sometimes the last name. This reader is forced into a ‘re-read search’ for the name. If you have a good memory for names this will not bother you.
There is some fantasy as to the abilities of the Saviors but not too distracting.
Changes between the ‘old world’ and ‘future world’ are written in huge blocks or ‘parts’ that can be skip-read to maintain continuity if you choose to do so. The parts are seamlessly connected, ensuring the believability of the narrative.
The ending is a semi-conclusion preparing for Book 2 and Book 3. Unanswered questions but still satisfying. I enjoyed this read and felt it worth my time.
I found this book through BookBub and decided to give it a shot. This is my favorite book of the year so far and I’ve currently read 22 books this year! I cannot believe this doesn’t have a massive following yet!! Such a great story, starting with one of the Blanks (such a cool idea), and the character names are so good “Kaiber the Cruel”? Come on, how cool is that. Elchora, Gadryon, Orla… I loved all of them. My only tiny critique is that with so many characters, it was sometimes hard to keep track of who was who, but that barely put a dent in how much I loved this book.
I wanted to up the maps to track the story as it unfolded and follow the characters along it was so immersive! It’s written so well, blending sci-fi and fantasy in a way that hooked me even though I’m usually not a fantasy reader. Now it’s my favorite book of the year. What are the odds…
Another review on here said the same thing I did which just proves the point even more about how good the book is! I went looking for TikTok and Instagram fan edits, character lore videos, anything and came up empty. I was shocked because honestly, this book is made for that kind of fandom. A few chapters in, I was already thinking this would make an INCREDIBLE TV adaptation!!
There are some graphic scenes with violence and one with explicit language so keep that in mind if you’re buying this for younger teens it might not be for them.
I looked up the author and found out this is his debut novel which honestly blows my mind, because this reads like the work of someone who’s been doing this for years. I cannot recommend this enough. Let yourself get sucked into this world the way I did. Book two, please hurry!!
Sci fi is not the genre I would normally choose but I received The God Stone as a gift so decided to read it. Actually I found I could not put it down. The characterisation of the main characters is captivating and the journey they are on mesmerising. Descriptions are vivid and you can feel the variety of emotions and what lies behind them so that you pick sides and hope things will go the way you want. The imagination to create this totally alien world is something special. I can't wait to find out what happens to our travellers. Roll on Book 2
This book was really a breath of fresh air for me. I've enjoyed science fiction and some fantasy titles in the past, but have often been let down by the moment-to-moment writing, the dialogue and the world building – great ideas and arcs but pretty cringey writing at the page level. 'The God Stone' is the first book I've encountered in a while that manages to bridge both of those, and actually bridges sci-fi and fantasy, too. Ross has populated this very original world with characters that I could really get behind and I'm itching, like other reviewers here, to get my hands on Book Two!
Really well-written and a great blend of sci-fi and fantasy which are 2 of the genres I like. There is some gory violence and coarse language as well as sexual descriptions that I think make this inappropriate for young teens. It took me several chapters to really get into it but by about 1/3 of the way through I was hooked. Looking forward to the next installment.
Interesting addition to the genre of sci-fi. Enjoyed it and I found it didn’t always hold my attention. Definitely has an audience. Thank you to the author. Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
A good start to the story, though now I want to know what happens next. Seldom do I find both futuristic and feudal in the same story. They were woven together well so that it seemed to be a cohesive whole. Looking forward to the next installment.
