A must-read if you are looking to expand your understanding of Hawaiian history and cultural values. The back cover review claims this is "highly readable," but do not mistake John Holt to mean Kanahele is an easy read. You will have to work to gain understanding, but what you will learn is well worth the effort. The text is highly accurate, something I appreciate after personally publishing a book filled with Hawai'ian words with diacritical markings. Just look at Goodreads Title. I could not find the paperback edition by title because the macron in 'Ku' has been garbled by a false font.

I am officially giving up trying to finish reading this book. It actually started off quite good. A lot of it is rather dated, there was a certain amount of circular logic based on non-Hawaiian "primitive" cultural practices, & the section on evolution was positively inane.

one of my favorite reference books. a really thorough study of hawaiian values and a well-researched look into the question "what is a hawaiian?"
