A PARANORMAL NOVEL BY THE AUTHOR OF THE DARK THRILLER, SHATTERED, AND THE BESTSELLING DRAMA, 10 NIGHTS
In this, the first episode of Devil's Spawn, Devil's Pawn, the imprisoned god, Jacarendu, plots to free himself from the castle where he has been held for millennia, his willing accomplice, the slave, Lucia. His plan has been centuries in the making, and now it's time for him to put it into operation, but will it go as he has imagined it.
The latest novel, serialized and released at the rate of 1-2 episodes per month, by the author of the bestselling novels, Shattered and 10 Nights.
Ever feel like you've missed the first act in a play? This is how I felt when I read the first chapter of this book. It was pretty easy to catch up on what was going on. The question is, who is really the bad guy and who is the good guy? It's not known yet.
The world building is sketchy. The reader is treated to a little bit of information in each chapter. It's a little slow for me but I can envision it pretty easily only because I read sci-fi/fantasy. For those who don't, it could be confusing. Oddly enough, this story invoked both the sci-fi movie Pandora and a bit of Superman. Let me explain. Jacarendu visited Earth and it decided to stop here a while. This brought me images of first scene in Pandora. The "thing" making Jacarendu weak reminds me of Superman. Since I have a bunch of sci-fi imagery going on in my head, this story worked for me.
It would be nice to have more world building. To learn more about the time period which we can guess based on the weapons. And also to confirm if humans other than the ones guarding are aware of alien life forms. Then again, Mr. Jones may be doling out little pieces as this seems to be a serial story. I'm not fond of series because it always feels as if the book is left unfinished which leaves me not fully satisfied. This book is rated a 2.5 star because it was okay. If I had a bit more, it would have been a 3 star. I recommend this to urban fantasy readers who enjoy a serial format.
