My first gaming love as a child was Battletech. Giant, stompy mechs beating the hell of each other. What’s not to like?
I didn’t realize back then how much lore and story was already baked into universe. As far as I was concerned, there was little need for reason when it came to mech fights. But as I grew older I started to dip my toe into the lore pool. Once I did, I became aware of how little I knew, how much of the universe there was to explore. It was a bit intimidating, to be honest.
Enter this book. It describes itself as a primer to the Battletech universe, that it will provide a very high-level overview. And to be fair, that is exactly what it delivers. As a beginner’s guide to the world and factions, this is a great start. As a book you read front to back? Not so much.
The book makes a point of stating it won’t go into specific stories; there are simply too many to give them all the limelight. While this is a fair assessment, this also means that the book will just be giving dates and brief overviews of different time periods. Imagine a really dry, boring history class that provides only the barest of details, depriving the reader of anything interesting.
Look, I get it: this is meant to be a source book, one to be used in tandem with other stories to provide context and a larger picture. For that, this book is great. But as an entry point for newcomers? It falls flat. I came into this book with a preexisting love of the lore and I struggled to finish it. I can’t imagine this would any fun for someone coming in, looking for big robot battles, only to find a long drawn out history lesson.

A comprehensive history of BattleTech lore up to the most recent period after Terra’s conquest by Wolf Clan. Whereas the recent Warhammer 40k guide intermixes lore and actual miniatures, here the focus is on the rich and byzantine universe in which BattleTech is settled. Informed by hard (or at least semi-realistic) and military sci-fi, the setting is very intriguing and it spans centuries of battles, cultural and political crisis and resurgences, feeling very alive and engrossing. Too bad there are some typos and awkward grammar errors, but overall they don’t detract from the whole experience.

A slightly less than 300 page long summary of the history of the Battletech Universe from the theoretical development of the FTL drive to the post-Dark Age setting of the ilClan. This volume does a good job of either introducing newbies to the setting, or refreshing returning veterans while filling them in on the latest developments.
There's a huge library of books that have been written that go into further details of the setting, both in the form of fiction and sourcebooks, but this is a good place to start whether or not you choose to go on to those.

A fantastic summary of the huge lore for the Battletech Universe. This would’ve been a guaranteed 5 star review for the amount of content on offer and the fantastic artwork, however the book has a number of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors somehow not picked up by proofreading! A shame but otherwise a great read.

I enjoyed the book but my copy was absolutely riddled with errors, misprints, and misspellings.

A glorious romp through the battletech universe. Great for those just starting out or old hands wanting to get up to date. The internal artwork is beautiful and represents the universe perfectly.

An excellent primer for the lore regarding both the timeline and the major factions. Huge recommendation to anyone who wants to get into the game.

Excellent setting sourcebook. Having been a fan in the late 80s and early 90s I fell out of the hobby until 2018. This was a good way to "catch up" in broadstrokes.
