I was born with a foot in two worlds, but I never imagined I'd hold their fate in my hands. For six years, I'd struggled to control my wild magic and navigate the treacherous Fae courts. Then came the night I accidentally glimpsed a terrifying a creeping darkness devouring magic, extinguishing life.
They called it the black rot, and it was consuming our realm bit by bit.
Suddenly, the Moon Court - our oldest rivals - proposed an alliance through marriage. They sent Lir, a brooding warrior with eyes full of secrets, to guard me during negotiations. I didn't trust him, couldn't trust him. Yet every time our eyes met, every accidental touch, sent electricity coursing through my veins.
As the rot spread, I uncovered a chilling for reasons unknown, this blight saw me as a threat.
With the fate of two realms in my hands, I'll have to become the queen I was born to be—or watch as everything I love crumbles to dust.
Cursed by the Phantom Prince is book nine in the Once Upon a Curse book series. This is a retelling of Arthur and Guinevere that fans of The Guinevere Deception by Kirsten White, The Stolen Heir by Holly Black, and The Iron King by Julie Kagawa are sure to love! Scroll up and one-click this arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, tournaments, knights, touch her and die, forced proximity, he falls first epic read!
Rhan was born in the human world, with a human mother and a father who was a Fae Prince. Adopted by the Court of Dawn Queen she is now trying to control her magic and navigate the treacherous fae world. When the Court of Moon suddenly sends a delegation with a marital offer Rhan is chocked. Court of Dawn and Court of Moon have never had a near connection, they’re more like enemies. Why does their prince want to marry Rhan? And why now?
The first sentence gets my attention: "On the eve of my thirteenth birthday, they came for me." 😯 This is a retelling of Arthur and Guinevere with dual POV's (mostly hers). I really like Rhan. Her magic is unusual, she's got spunk and can fight. She's also got a wolfhound as company and protection and they can speak to each other telepathically. Toren (the prince) has grown up with a father who rules with fear, but he doesn't want to become that kind of ruler. He's accompanied by Larek, the Court of Stars prince, who's been blind since birth (one of my favorites!).
The chemistry between Rhan and Toren is spot on, although it's a bit insta-love warning on their connection. There's some unnecessary repetitions that I would have liked edited better, and it gets a little tiresome to read about all fae being "breathtakingly beautiful" (we KNOW!). Overall I liked the book very much and I would have been happy if it had been longer!
* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *
a fun ya friendly fantasy, part of a series of books that can be read independently. The storyline was fun, and the characters were likable. a good light read.
This was a fast paced and engaging Romantasy retelling with a creative mix of curses, Fae courts, hidden identities and Arthurian myths. I loved the bond and chemistry between Rhan and Toren, and the intrigue from the Prince in disguise. The unique magical abilities were creative and I like the mix of royal intrigue, magic and Gods influence. I really liked Larek's character too and his keen ability and awareness despite being blind. Animal companions are always a bonus especially when they have unique bonds or abilities, and I liked the suspense building from the growing evil forces and cursed plague on the land. I'd love to read more of this world, and see what these characters are capable of, an how they will fight the dark threats facing their kingdoms.
🗡️ "He may be a predator but I was certainly not prey. I wouldn't allow him to intimidate me"
🗡️"She was breathtaking and almost painfully gorgeous. Looking at her was like looking at the sun"
🗡️"For the first time in my life i'd encountered a being that could scorch my soul. I'd willingly rip out my own heart and present it to her to bask in her glow for just a moment"
🗡️"I was the rose of the Court of Dawn. Beautiful and resilient and easy to underestimate. But roses have thorns"
🗡️"A darkness that was inside him. It beckoned me like I was a moth and it was the flame"
Highlights 📝 • ‘Roses the same shade as my dress were woven into my hair, along with black jewels that glinted with light every time I moved my head.’ 😍 • ‘She was breathtaking and almost painfully gorgeous. Looking at her was like looking at the sun. She brightened every room, making it hard to look away but knowing that you should or you’d get burned.’ 🥺

Review ✍🏼 Meh. This wasn’t one of my favorite books. In the beginning it felt like some details were repeated a lot, which got annoying. But later in the book some details (like how people looked) where shared, which I would’ve wanted to know earlier, instead of the same information over and over again. However, it wasn’t a very bad read. The storyline is very promising and it is an easy read for a romantasy with enough fantasy worldbuilding in it. It’s doesn’t end with a big cliffhanger but I do feel like information is missing (very abrupt happy ending). Not sure how this serie of books (Once Upon A Broken Curse Series) works, as far as I can see it’s from different authors, but we’ll see!
This was a beautifully written book. I just don’t think I clicked with it which was disappointing. I really enjoyed the writing style and I think the world was absolutely gorgeous. The beginning was confusing and felt too convenient to the story - it just was without any rhyme or reason to avoid questions later in the story.
I loved the characters, I wish the story was longer so they could really be fleshed out more.
It’s a fun fast paced read that has some really nice details in its nod to Arthurian fantasy.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book it was fast paced and kept your attention but the last 5 chapters I felt like it was jumping to much but I’m intrigued to see where the next book goes
"I encountered a being that could scorch my soul." ~Toren🔥🔥 I think she already did.
Ahhh. You didn't just do that to me, did ya?! Wah-wah. You lose.😔🤣🤣 Holy Gotham City, Batman. We are in the thick of it now. That's for Ms Grayce btw.😁 Sooo. I read this incredibly well written story and my brain is spinning out a little bit. Woo. One sec.☝🏻😮💨 It's not a long book but it brings so much imagination and creativity. I know it's a reimagining of Arthur and Guinevere, I can see that, and who doesn't love the Arthurian legend b/c this girl certainly does. But let's get it straight: this is Rhan and Toren's story. And I'm glad to be on that magical 🦄unicorn🦄 riding through its mushroom🍄🍄🍄 portals, lands, castles, mysterious four courts, and dealing with mythical creatures. Looking at you crow woman. I'm calling you out, Morrigan.🐦⬛🐦⬛🐦⬛🐦⬛ Rot being. You too. Merlin. Merlin. Whyyy dude? Why???🧙🏼♂️ Geez.
We have Morgan Le'Fey's daughter Rhan, she's half human half Fae, she's the key to bring peace and healing to the broken twisted realm of Alleryia. She was born on the earth plane but at the age of 13, had to return to her Father's home. The Fae need her. The beginning is sad. Morgan is good and she sacrificed herself for her daughter. Rhan is raised by a friend of her Mom's named Flora, someone Morgan trusted... till Rhan had to leave forever. We go forward 6yrs and in the fae world chaos is unfolding with a poison that seeks and destroys kingdoms and it's magical inhabitants. Till the Phantom Prince, from the Moon Court, decides to purpose an alliance with the Court of Dawn, asking for the hand of Princess Rhan, adopted daughter of Queen Ríona. That's when all the intrigue, deception, mystery, drama, starts to unfold. We get some spicy spicy too. Then everything turns upside down.🙃🙃🙃🙃
I won't spoil what happens. That wouldn't be fair. This book certainly held my attention as I was pulled right into this beautiful, mystical fantasy. Great world building. The story ran smoothly. There are plenty of interesting characters. I love, like seriously love Lady, Rhan's protective wolfhound. Lady is smart and funny. They communicate telepathically. Cool!!✨🐺✨ And Larek. He's vision impaired but you would never guess it by the way he moves. He, too, has a special animal, a falcon. Ithildin.🦅 I seriously need more info on that guy quick. I don't know if there's a book 2. I'm hoping there will be.🤞🏻🙉 B/c it can't end like that. It can't. Isn't that against book law or something?😂😂😂 I'm already guessing who Lancelot might be.🤫 If you like fantasy, I highly highly recommend this book. The book cover is awesome. Great job, Ms Grayce!!🦇🥳🦇 Happy reading!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
🧚🏻♀️✨Thank you to Ms Grayce and Bookfunnel for an early book. I'm happily leaving my honest thoughts. Get this book todayyy.✨🧚🏻♂️
Rhan is a child of two worlds with a massive weight resting on her shoulders. She is the one fated to save both the worlds she comes from. Prior to her mother's death she left allies for Rhan to find when it is time to face her fate. But at 13 she isn't sure how she is supposed to do that let alone let people know the secrets of her parentage. After being taken to the fae world in the dark of night leaving behind those she cares for, she is brought to the Court of Dawn. There she becomes the adopted daughter of the Dawn Queen and heir. Six years later her fate starts to find her when the neutral Court of Stars comes with a proposal. They are tasked with helping broker a marriage treaty between the Moon Court Prince Toren and Rhan. Taken by surprise since the Moon Court has isolated themselves for years, Rhan becomes increasingly suspicious especially with the broody Black Guard Lir acting as protection. Before she can fully figure out what with the guard and the way he unnerves her there are reports of black rot infecting the Sun Court. And somehow Rhan is being singled out by it. Prince Toren is desperate to save his court and people. His idea of marrying the Court of Dawn heir isn't the best but he knows he is running out of time. Deciding to go disguised as his personal guard Lir, he can see her for himself and determine if she will be an asset or not. What he didn't expect was who Rhan was behind the royal mask she wears.
This was a quick read with a dash of cozy tropes mixed in with the magic and the intrigue. The final chapters that gave the history behind what is going on absolutely intrigued me. However, as for the Arthur and Guinevere aspects, the Arthurian names are there, some of the ideas are there but I’m not quite sure how this is a retelling. It's almost like a generation later with how the names and timeline is. I can understand the characters and their motives for the most part. There were a few times that I wasn't sure why an event or thing happened, that the story could have used a longer page count to expand on a few things better. Of the characters I think Larek is my favorite and would love to learn more about him. The twist/revelations at the end have me hooking in wanting to know what happens next.
I have always loved Arthurian stories. Camelot, Excalibur, Merlin, give me all of these characters and it would be hard pressed for me to not love the book! Although Lela’s story is not based directly from Arthur and Guinevere, it is more next generation inspired. However, the book drew me in and I WAS HERE FOR IT! With amazing world building, character development, and a storyline that didn’t quite, this quickly became a favorite within The Once Upon a Curse series and an excellent book to wrap up the release of this entire collection.
Born in the human world, Rhan has been summoned to the Fae world to learn about her magic and other half of her heritage. Being adopted by the Fae Queen opens up a world of possibilities Rhan isn’t sure she’s ready for, especially when a wedding proposal arrives. As Prince Toren’s servant stays after announcing the Prince’s intention, she begins to feel a pull to this man that is now protecting her. Rhan isn’t one to need protecting though. She is strong, determined, and spunky. However the pull between these two seems too strong to fight against.
Prince Toren is determined to be a different kind of king than his father. He doesn’t want to rule with fear, but true loyalty. Since he is known to the Fae Queen’s court as someone different, he is able to get to know people differently. His guise of the Prince’s servant allows people to talk more freely in him, treat him like a regular person, and giving him the opportunity to get to know Rhan better. However, is there more to the Prince than he is letting on?
This book gave me everything! Intrigue, drama, court politics, romantasy, and deception. A love story that slowly burns, but ignites into passion, I only wish the end was more resolved. Not to say we don’t get answers, but I don’t know if I feel all the questions asked throughout the book are closed out. I am not sure if Lela plans on this to be the first of a series, but I wouldn’t mind more from this world. All in all a wonderful read, I highly recommend, and fully enjoyed the story!
As always, review any author notes before reading.

I do so love an Arthurian themed read, Morgan, Mordred, Merlin, have fascinated me since I was a child. What a refreshing take this book is, I mean, Morgan le Feye, good, unselfish??? Born with an uncanny awareness, which is somehow fitting for a daughter of Morgan, Rhanen knows her destiny, knows the 2 realms future rests on her shoulders. No pressure right? She has no idea HOW to achieve this but once in the Fae world, she finds out pretty quickly. She finds a lot pretty quickly... The author did a fabulous job in her storytelling, bringing all the elements together in a gorgeous way.
This book was sweet and cute and adorable and just lovely. Probably not what the author was going for but that's my overriding impression, that's what this book evoked from me. Oh there was plenty of mystery and drama too, what with a curse taking over the Fae Realm and threatening all to a certain death. I really enjoyed how easy it was to feel all the characters, how easy it was to get into the plot, how easy it was to relate to the 2 wonderful MCs. Both Rhan and Toren were so likeable, both honourable, both wanting to save their world from the blight. I loved the subterfuge that Toren employed and how unprepared he was for the ensuing results. I really loved Larek who, despite his blindness, saw more than sighted individuals.
Was it a bit predictable? Sure, to a large degree it was but more a predictable comfort read, one that fills the corners of the puzzle beautifully, I never had to scramble to find the right piece, the author delivered each piece timeously so I could lean back and enjoy it all!
Cursed by the Phantom Prince is a refreshing take on Arthurian legend. I've always loved stories of Arthur, Guinevere and Merlin. I love that it wasn't a direct retelling. In fact, it's more of a "the next generation story. Morgan Le'Fey's daughter, Rhan, who is half human and half fae, is summoned back into the fae world. She's adopted by the queen of the Dawn Court who was her mother's friend. She must learn to control her magic and fit in with the fae. And then a marriage proposal arrives at the castle door. Rhan and Lady are great characters, I also love her lady in waiting. The princes are pretty interesting themselves, but I'd rather the reader discovers that for themselves. I wouldn't have appreciated knowing too much ahead of time. There is friendship, court and fae politics, magic, romance, and an awesome canine companion in this book. It is very fast paced and will definitely keep you entertained. The only downside, if you can call it that, is that the story ends on a cliffhanger. I wasn't expecting it because of the other books in the Once Upon a Curse series, but that's on me for making an assumption. I was really interested in the tournament, but while it is mentioned, it's not actually in this book. I will definitely get the next book as soon as it releases. I recommend this book and keeping up with the series.
This story is a fantastic way to close the once upon a curse collection! I didn't want to say end because all these amazing stories could have so much more to give us in the future! Cursed by a Phantom Prince starts out with the dad passing of Rhan's mother and her living in an orphanage. She is half human, half Fae. The Fae Queen adopts her via her friends wishes and raises Rhan as her own.
With turmoil brewing in the moon court, Prince Toren tales it up on himself to set up an alliance with the sun court. Disguising himself as his best friend and faithful servant, he delivers the request of marriage to the Fae Queen and stay so protect the princess himself.
Tensions and lust rise as they spend time with one another. Even after the black rot takes hold in the sun court, it just draws the two together more!
For the first half of this amazing story, it draws you in and anchors part of you to it with the black tendrils of its passion and creativity.
The twists and turns of this story will keep you on your toes as the slow burn of the passion consumes you! Hang on for the ride and don't stray to far! You never know when it will be time to return and rescue the magical world as we know it!
This was such a good book honestly. I am such a sucker for everything fae as well which this book has! Being a little over 200 pages this is a pretty fast read but enjoyable none the less!!! If you love enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, he falls first, and touch her and die...i'd say this is the one for you.
In this well follow Rhan who is half human and half fae, born in the human world and her father was a fae prince. Rhan ends up in the fae world and under the Dawn court. We also follow Toren a fae prince for the Moon dawn. They are trying to make an agreement to join the two courts together even though they have been basically enemies for a long time.
I really enjoyed Rhan and her animal companion plus the magic that she has. The chemistry between Rhan and Toren is so fun to read. There is another character we see by the name of Larek and his character is so absolutely fun to read whenever he is around!! There are curses and evil forces at play in this fae world and in order to get rid of it Rhan and Toren must end up working together.
If this were to become a series of its own i would totally read the whole series!! I did receive this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion!!
Rating 3.5 ⭐ ◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜ This is a retelling of Arthur and Guinevere, since I'm not familiar with that story I won't talk about it. I enjoyed the premise of the story, and how it started. It was short, and fast-paced, but I felt from the middle of the story things kind of turned a bit confusing, and the ending was also a bit rushed. In my opinion the happy ending of the story is not fully closed, and leaves room for more to come. I enjoyed a lot the animal companion, and the connection between FMC and her companion. Larek was one of my faves characters, and tbh I feel he would've been a better fit for the FMC!!
This book had such a fast start with an intriguing story it was very hard to put down. I loved Rhan and Torens story! Some intriguing things this book contains are secret identity 🥸, realm portals 🍄, he falls first, animal companionship 🐶🦅, telepathic communication 🎤, *disability rep* 👨🏻🦯, and adoption. This was well written and very easy to read, definitely has lovable and unique main characters as well as a side character Larek. Im still shocked at how I never would’ve guessed that this book would include disability rep! Larek is blind and utilizes his falcon Ithildin, who has a very funny way or interacting with Toren when he is alone. My only comment is I wish that the story went on a little bit longer. It ends resolves but I feel like it keeps so many questions unresolved. Very easy to read and I enjoyed the disability rep, and adoption rep a lot, as they’re relatable to me, and it’s something that you don’t see everyday in reading. Thank you for giving me the pleasure of ARC reading this beautiful book!
Starting with the characters, seeing them molded by this strong backgrounds and starting open their minds to each other and seeing them fight and protect one another even after some stones get in the way per say makes this story pretty nice to follow and i really like how all the characters interact with one another and the diferent ways they do so, specially in Rahn point of view and her particular powers.
And then we have this little twists and turns here and there that makes it really enjoyable to read and a overstall great story.
With all this it made me want to read more in the end, see more from them and see how they would go up against the challanges ahead.
- Forbidden love - Magic - Fae and humans - Forced Proximity - Curses - Hidden identity - Instant connection
This book is a fast paced, Arthur and Guinevere retelling. I really liked this book right from the beginning. I loved Rhan’s character. Loved that she was a strong FMC, not a damsel in distress. I really liked Toren, but loved Larek! Loved Lady, Rhan’s dog companion! Loved Toren and Rhan’s connection.
The ending felt a bit unfinished to me, but might be to set up a series. Would definitely read the next book if there is one.
Overall, I really liked the book and hope the story continues.
While the story idea was interesting and the link to the Arthurian legends quite cleverly worked in, there were simply too many jarring inconsistencies that threw me out of the story. Additionally, the ending felt unnecessarily rushed and didn’t actually end with the completion of the main quest which totally threw off the pacing which had been good for the first two thirds of the novel. And lastly, calling this an Arthur & Guinivere retelling was entirely misleading, since it’s about Morgana’s daughter (I.e. Arthur’s niece) in the fae realm with a fae prince. Considering this a sequel to the Arthurian legends would make more sense.
Could not put this down. I finished this in 3 hours because it was so good! It's fast paced which means it holds your attention the entire time. The chemistry between the two mcs was so good but also the friendship aspect is really good too. I really hope there is a sequel here because theres a ton of questions that I have left that don't really pertain to the main story but I'm still interested in. Overall, I fell in love with this world because the characters were enjoyable and I'm a nerd for all things Authurian mythology and it was done well.
Quick read containing forced proximity, arranged marriage of convenience, instant connection, fae, humans, magic, a deadly curse, and politics....
I am very excited that this is the first book with more to come. The characters are wonderful with multiple fae courts and a human realm.
This being a quick read, there is not extensive world building, but there is still a good amount. I definitely did not expect the twist/additional characters at the end. That was a really fun surprise! I am excited to see where the characters go from here. I plan to follow the series.
This book promised a retelling of the Arthur and Guinevere story but fell quite short. There is very little to connect it to Arthurian themes. I kept searching for why it was entitled as such. Sure, Merlin makes an appearance, and we learn that Rhan is Morgan LeFay's daughter in the prologue. Toren doesn't have a strong origin story. This is basically a fae romance story with an abrupt ending that leaves you wanting more. It's a fairly short book, so a few more chapters to tie up all the loose ends would have moved my rating to four stars.
An amazing retelling of Arthurian legend! A lot of favorite characters make an appearance in their own way, but this story brought a new life to the classic tale.
We follow Rhan and Toren, our Guinevere and Arthur, respectively, as they navigate a very confusing time between their groups very shaky alliance. Will it be better with a marriage proposal and everything they try to hide from each other?
I started reading this at 5am and that first bit made me cry. It was vary emotional and sad, but it picks up to intrigue, fast paced adventure. Fae courts, authurian history, animal companion, love, curses, and darkness. Can two worlds be saved by one fae princess? Read this Beautifully enchanted story to find out. I would really love if there was more to this story. I feel like it was left wide open for more.
A very good and enjoyable read with a captivating story and amazing characters. I especially loved the undercover guard aspect, the intricate court dynamics, and the unique magic system. However, the book felt like it should have been longer. The ending was too open and unfinished, leaving some key elements unresolved—like the anticipated action surrounding the curing of the rot, which never came. Despite this, it was still a great story that kept me hooked!
I didn't really see the parallels of the retelling part of it until towards the end, and honestly it was good enough to stand on its own as a unique story! I would have loved to see further development as the end seemed like a bit of a rush and an info dump to resolve things while also leaving earlier threads unfinished. Despite that, I really enjoyed the characters and the style of writing!
"For the first time in my life I’d encountered a being that could scorch my soul. I’d willingly rip out my own heart and present it to her to bask in her glow for just a moment."
I really enjoyed this book! It's a quick fast paced read. I want to know more about this world! I love the whole idea of it and I look forward to learning more about Rhans powers and the rot that is slowly destroying the realm.
A fine book but it felt like there was so much missing. Information was repeated a lot at the beginning but not a lot of info on the characters, their looks, etc until later on in the story. Book is too short for me to really get into the story and characters. Compared to Cursed by Fates and a couple other books in this standalone series, I'm not a fan of this one. Beautiful cover and promising premise.
An amazing romance fantasy with a little Arthurian twist to it. Than is our heroine and is brave and loving. Lir/Toren is our prince but he may need rescuing more than she does. The addition of friends and animal familiars add so much more fun to the story. It is filled with action and a mysterious danger. I would have loved to have more at the end but it really is a sweet romance.
Oooo enjoyed this! Cool setup with there being prophetic talks about Rhan being a savior, and an interesting Fae world. Like Rhan connecting with her dark Knight on the way to marry the Fae Prince of the Moon Court; some surprising scenarios there for Rhan. This has some Arthur and Guinevere aspects, but it isn’t their story. Still an interesting story! Enjoyed the magical elements too!
This is a wonderful read and a fantastic addition to this incredible series. A well written retelling of Arthur and Guinevere told with the authors incredible take and it’s exciting and entertaining as we follow Rhan and Torens story. Fast paced and filled with curses, Arthurian myths, fantastic characters, this draws you in with twists and turns, mysteries and intrigue. Fantastic!
