Amusing Miss Austen

Her love life is inspiring a story…

When Felicity Blackburn meets Max Fitzroy at the Steventon assembly she’s not impressed. While his friend Evan Pringle charms the ladies, including her sister Harriet, stony-faced Max refuses to dance and doesn't have a good word to say about anyone, least of all high-spirited Felicity.

Felicity resolves to avoid grumpy Max, yet after several run-ins, including an embarrassing encounter at the local lake, she can’t seem to stop thinking about him.

Despite their ensuing attraction (and Max’s attempts at flirting), Felicity grows ever more confused about his intentions. She also has another problem - an insidious clergyman cousin who's invited himself to stay and insists on wooing her with terrible poetry.

Fortunately, her good friend Jane Austen is on hand with kind and sympathetic counsel. But when Felicity stumbles upon a story Jane’s secretly writing, she recognises herself as one of the main characters!

With her drama fueling Jane’s creativity, Max allegedly in pursuit of another woman, and a proposal hanging over her head from decidedly the WRONG man - can Felicity sort out the romantic tangle before it’s too late? Or will Jane’s story have a happier ending than her own?

A gorgeously funny, lighthearted Pride and Prejudice variation that reimagines the events that inspired Jane Austen to write Lizzy and Mr Darcy’s story.

The writing was a joy to read. The characters were immensely engaging and the storyline was captivating. I felt like I was transported back in time reading this story. A drunk Max was quite hilarious . Two unscrupulous people schemed to break apart Felicity and Max. Will the scheme work, or will love triumph?? What a stunning ending! A humorous heartwarming read. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

Everything about this book is delightful. It’s silly, it’s clever, it’s funny. The absolute cluelessness of Felicity with regard to Jane’s activities is wonderfully absurd.

Mr Fitzroy as the Darcy character, Mr Pringle as a Welsh Mr Bingley, Humbleton as sad sack Mr Collins, it’s just a rollicking good time.

Suspend your strict Austen recollections and just enjoy this brief ray of sunshine that’s the perfect palate cleanser after a heavy literary diet of angst and despair.

I was lucky to have received an advance reader copy from the author and booksirens, and I’m pleased to share my enthusiastic review.

What a unique take on a P&P variation. I can see that Felicity was meant to be the model for both Lydia and Lizzy. This was a fun read.

As someone who loves Jane Austen, this was such a fun read!

Angela has created such a lively world that is incredibly easy to fall in love with. Her writing style is very bubbly and creative, so much so that the narrative voice her character Felicity has feels so realistic and sarcastic! It makes it effortless to adore the characters.

I've seen some reviews that state that the plot was a little too similar to the original Pride and Prejudice novel. While this is true at the beginning, I think it's really fun to make those connections while having Jane Austen as a literal character (I loved this element so much).

I also appreciated the more "adult" version. While this was far from spicy, there were little hints that just made it a lot more modern and bouncy.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. I cannot wait for its sequel and to read Angela's other books over the next few months. She is a very talented author.

I'm not normally into historical fiction but I loved this do much. I was gripped from the start. Flissy and Max were so cute. I love how that in every Angela Pearse book I read everyone gets their just deserts. I'm so glad I got an opportunity to read this before it fully releases.

I am so incredibly honored to have received a copy of this book from the author. Amusing Miss Austen was everything I could have asked for in a book and more. If you love Pride and Prejudice and Bridgerton then this story is a must-read. In other words, I love this book so hard. I read the entire book in one sitting and I went through the entire roller-coaster ride of emotions. I laughed, smiled so hard, cried, and got so angry all throughout the span of reading this and I loved every minute of it. Felicity and Max’s interactions throughout the story made me laugh so hard that I snorted. I also happened to love them both so hard. Felicity and Harriet’s sisterly bond was seriously the cutest and I love how they are always there for one another. Additionally, I absolutely love Felicity and Jane’s friendship and all the shenanigans they get up to throughout the book. Overall, this book had me smiling so hard and I really am truly hoping that there will be a sequel focusing on Jane’s story because I want to go back to this world so badly.

At the Steventon Assembly Felicity Blackburn meets for the first time the handsome but grumpy Max Fitzroy who is staying at his friend's Evan Pringle. Unfortunately her first impression is not the best, she overhears the gentleman insulting her, in addition he refuses to dance with her.

Felicity now tries to avoid Max but they accidentally meet quite often, causing Felicity to think constantly about him, even as his actions leave her further confused. But Max is not the only problem Felicity needs to face: her cousin, the clergyman, is determined to leave Steventon as an engaged man - his intended bride is Felicity.

She now tries to avoid her cousin and secretly searches for the nearness of Mr Stonyface Max. Fortunately she can count on the help of her best friend, Jane Austen. But then Felicity discovers that Jane used her confusing love life as inspiration for a love story she secretly writes. Will Felicity, like in a novel, find her happily ever after? Will she be able to win Max's heart or will her cousin, in the end and against her wishes, claim her as his fiancée? And what about Jane's novel?

Amusing Miss Austen is a very well written story by the author Angela Pearse. I had so many laughing out loud moments and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The book tells the story of Felicity Blackburn and her way of finding love. Certainly, that isn't something unusual, but Felicity's best friend, the daughter of the local parson, is Miss Jane Austen. And Jane uses Felicity's luck and misfortune as an inspiration for her novel, later called First impressions. And I say: yes, it really could have occurred that Jane Austen was writing her famous story in exactly that way. Everything fits and the relationship of Felicity and Max has astonishing parallels to the story of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy (naturally Jane modified everything a bit to not embarrass her friend 😉). It was very well done and I enjoyed the thought of Jane immortalising her friend in that way in a novel very much.

I like the heroine Felicity very much. She is a lovable, witty person full of life and love. A person who deserves to find happiness and certainly not to be tied to a relatively unknown cousin. I am so glad that, in the end, she is able to secure her happiness. I was happy with her and suffered with her.

I also enjoy it very much to be witness to Jane Austen's very day life and witness her being inspired by her friend's love life and eventually writing a novel about it. That brings me the famous writer Jane Austen a little bit closer.

Max and Felicity and their history with one another shows parallels to Elizabeth and Darcy characters and history in Pride and prejudice, but Max and Felicity are both not as stubborn or prejudiced as Darcy and Elizabeth and there love stories is definitely easier solved and contains more witty moments (there is a really funny scene at the lake and the proposal was rather unique). I like them and relationships very much and enjoyed being witness to their life.

There are no real villains in the story (no Wickhams or Lady Catherines) only some people who stand in their way but for believable reasons, neither of them was really evil.

If you like to know what could have inspired Jane Austen to write her famous story of Pride and prejudice and if Felicity and Max will find happiness together despite their less than ideal beginning you should definitely read this book.

I highly recommend it.

Literally one of the funniest, cutest books I’ve ever read.
Beware embarrassing LOL moments on the train!
If you love Jane Austen but don’t mind a little irreverence and the occasional anachronism, then you’ll adore this sweet little book. The cover says it all, really!
Told by Felicity, the premise is that two sisters, Harriet and Felicity (Flissie) live in the same village, Steventon, as Jane Austen. When a wealthy man, Mr Pringle, moves into a nearby mansion with a friend, Mr Fitzroy, the two sisters are soon in love. If only their frightful cousin, clergyman Mr Humbleton, could be dissuaded from trying to make one of them his wife, all would be well. Jane takes wicked delight in following her friends’ adventures which inspire her to pen Pride and Prejudice.
Angela does a really good job of colouring her work with the feel of Regency English without being too heavy-handed (although for purists there are some expressions where I think Miss Pearse forgets herself. I doubt a lady in 1796 would say ‘join their posse’ but no doubt she has done her research – or not, who cares?).
Flissie is naughty and huge fun, an injection of twenty-first century mindset into Regency society that enables us modern gals to insert ourselves right into the middle of the story line (as with similar historical rehashings such as the amazing ‘My Lady Jane’). I’m not sure if this was intentional, but it’s certainly engaging.
And the funny scenes, my goodness, they really did have me almost reaching into my reticule for a handkerchief and smelling-salts! The pond scene and the sponge cake scene stayed with me long after I’d shut down my Kindle. Such things Jane Austen, a clergyman’s daughter, would never have dared to mention but which would no doubt have been very much appreciated in certain circles in the Regency, a time which, we should remember, was just a naughty as our own.

I loved this fun Regency romp by Angela Pearse which is a kind of re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice from the viewpoint of Jane’s best friend Felicity. Felicity and her sister, Harriet have some of the same problems that show up in Jane’s budding novel. Felicity, who is a bit of a wild child has been frolicking with a farm boy as the novel begins even though he is not marriage material. When a handsome new neighbor moves into a nearby estate both Felicity and Harriet, are excited to meet the eligible young man. He also happens to have a very dour friend who is either arrogant or perhaps shy. Felicity finds herself both attracted and annoyed by the stern Mr. Fitzroy. Of course, Felicity tells all the details of her life to her friend Jane Austen not realizing some of it may show up in a novel one day.

Felicity’s life has similarities to the fictional l Lizzie Bennett but there are enough humorous and different plot twists and turns to keep the novel following its own quirky storyline and at the same time provide fun fodder for Jane’s book.

Since I am a lover of all things Jane Austen, I thoroughly enjoyed this fun and creative novel. I have read a number of re-imagined Pride and Prejudice stories but I think this might be one of my favorites. Historical purists of the genre might take issue with certain elements, but there was nothing in the writing that jarred me out of the fun world Angela created for her characters. The book was mostly clean with a bit of sauce to it, but nothing that would give it more than a PG13 rating. (The wet shirt moment went a tad further than Colin Firth’s for example…) I highly recommend the book.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book!!

If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice, make sure you grab a copy. The characters you know and love (or hate) from Pride and Prejudice are re-imagined by this author into versions which (in this story) inspired those original characters.

The writing style is perfect, and the plot cleverly thought out to reflect the original with enough changes for it to make sense as the "real" events which inspired Miss Austen.

I quickly became obsessed with Mr Fitzroy and absolutely adored his relationship with Felicity.

There were so many laugh-out-loud/stand out moments, I couldn't possibly mention them all. Some highlights include: Mr Fitzroy in the pond, Mr Fitzroy and the cake, drunk Mr Fitzroy... (did I mention I LOVE Mr Fitzroy?) 🤣 He is the "original" Mr Darcy and the author has definitely done Mr Darcy justice.

I also enjoyed Felicity's relationship with her sister and friends (including Miss Austen), and the classic society atmosphere with balls and gossip/sabotage around potential husbands/proposals.

Miss Austen herself was just how I'd imagined, too. And her letters... genius!

Honestly, I could keep talking about this book for hours, and I kind of want to re-read it already which is quite unusual for me.

Fans of Pride and Prejudice, BUY THIS BOOK!

I would firstly just like to say a big thank you to the author who very kindly forwarded me an arc copy of her book, for my kindle, in return for my honest review…

This book is billed as a Pride and Prejudice variation and it reimagines the events that inspired Jane Austen to write Lizzy and Mr.Darcy’s story!

Amusing Miss Austen was a wonderful story, it was written really well and was such an easy story to read too.

Each chapter very easily pushed me along to the next one until, very quickly, i had come to the end and had read it all in a couple of sittings!

There are lots of emotions to go through while reading this book and i found myself laughing, smiling and swooning - a lot!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it definitely made my heart very happy……..

What can I say about the book is that it's a brilliant adaptation on the original story. If you love Pride and Prejudice or Bridgerton then I think you'll eat up this story. The characters are so much fun and the humour is easy and the friendships bring it altogether brilliantly. The story is typical Austen with the added bonus of I think more easy to understand writing. I know everyone raves but about reading the classics, but personally I much prefer this version. I could never fully engage with the original whereas I couldn't put this book down. So if you have always wanted to read the original but couldn't I really do recommend this superb story

Every time I read a book by this Angela Pearse I am in awe of what she pulls out the bag and the way that she can flit so effortlessly between wildly different genres, making it look as if she has written in them for decades.

Amusing Miss Austen was no exception.

It's laugh-out-loud funny, brilliantly written, full of a kaleidoscope of characters, brimming with twists and turns, and, most importantly, a female protagonist you will be (not so much rooting) but screaming for!

A delightful and entertaining reimagining of Pride and Prejudice, which if you're naughty like me and you've only ever skim-read the classics, it matters not a jot.

I hear that the author is working on a follow-up and I cannot wait!

Who doesn't love Jane Austen? Angela Pearse has done a wonderful job with her characters Felicity and Max. Felicity Blackburn meets Max Fitzroy and is immediately not impressed by him. Or so she said. While trying to avoid Max, Felicity only falls victim to embarrassing encounters with him and ends up with him more on her mind then she would like! Lucky, for her, her good friend Jane Austen is there to offer her support or is she there to gather inspiration for her novel? This is a book that once you start you will not be able to put down until you are done! Definite must read!

This charming new books cleverly attempts to answer the question "where did Jane Austen get the inspiration from for Pride and Prejudice". It's a delightful read where the protagonist Felicity is friends with Miss Austen. She has a disastrous first meeting with the grumpy Max at a dance and a series of subsequent events upends her life considerably. Luckily her friend Jane is on hand to listen to her woes, with her trusty pen at hand!

I especially loved the lake scene in this book - it was hilarious!

Angela Pearse does a fantastic job in creating a new story in the Pride and Prejudice world. The characters felt like they were supposed to in this historical setting, it was everything that I wanted and enjoyed from the romance genre. It had that world element that I was hoping for and thought the overall feel worked both as it's own thing and as a re-imagining. I thought Angela Pearse wrote this well and thought the re-imagining worked overall. I hope to read more from the author.

What if Pride and Prejudice was based on a true story? What is the romance of Miss Austen's best friend inspired one of the most classic love stories of all time? That is just the question Ms Pearce poses in this charming Regency romance. At first I was thinking, this will simply be a retelling of a classic novel that was already done perfectly. However I am so glad I took a chance on this novel! It's a clever and creative origin story for some of the most beloved characters in literature!

When I read Pox, I said that Angela Pearse should definitely write historical fiction and I stand by that. Amusing Miss Austen is a hugely enjoyable read. Being a big fan of Jane Austen and a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, I found it to be quite a delightful read. I loved Fliss. She was so strong, witty, independent and resourceful. I also appreciated the references to the 1995 series and thr 2005 movie. I will look forward to the followup in the series.

Thanks to the author for a chance to read this book. All views are my own.

Okay, I devoured Amusing Miss Austen by Angela Pearse, and let me just say ~ it’s pure joy in book form. If you're even remotely a fan of rom-coms, witty banter, or anything Austen-adjacent, you need this in your life! This isn't your typical retelling it’s clever, fresh, and downright hilarious!

In short: read this. It’s funny, feel-good, and totally fabulous. Jane would be amused and so was I!!

I’ve just finished reading this retelling of the classic novel by Jane Austen, from the POV of Felicity Blackburn (a friend of Jane’s) and her fortunes/misfortunes as a result of the love interests and marriage proposals in the 18th Century. A thoroughly enjoyable and fun adaptation of a love story that a lot of readers are familiar with, with strong feisty FMCs and some interesting male eye candy! I love her relationship with her sister Harriet and her friendship with Jane, and how she reacts when she realises she’s an inspiration for a promising writer! Angela has certainly done it again! Grab a copy of this story as it’s out now!!

what can I say... wonderful. I found this novel very well written, funny, sentimental and above all capable of telling the story of a woman's struggle against the rules of the times in a "light" but significant way. As always, this writer captured me from the first page. Highly recommended!

Y'all I LOVED reading this book!! As someone who has seen Pride & Prejudice at least 50+ times (there was a time there where I watched it every single day -- right before the Barbie movie no less so I had lots of concerned friends haha), this was a refreshing take on a retelling. Because it's the story of Jane's friend that she bases P&P on, it's different enough that it doesn't feel redundant, but has enough about the original story that you basically have a visual aid while you're reading.

I giggled through most of this book for sure! It was so funny and clever. The characters were immensely enjoyable and the relationship dynamics were interesting to watch play out. If you love romcoms, you will love this book regardless of if you're a fan of P&P or not.

I want to say a big thank you to Angela Pearse for allowing me to read this ARC and I STRONGLY encourage everyone to give it a read!

Slow start, but as you really get into it, a great adventure to indicate where Jane came up with her story of Pride and Prejudice. Only this has more outlandish behavior. Oh so entertaining.

Cute read with both wit and a happy ever after. Another take off of pride and prejudice but from a different angle….Jane Austin is an actual character within in the story who loosely develops it around her friend’s family and their budding romances when a bachelor and his friend move into the neighborhood

This book was such a delight from the very first chapter. I was hooked immediately and completely charmed by the main female character. Her voice was fresh and engaging and I loved everything written about Jane Austen. It had such cute vibes right from the start.

By the end, I was completely in love with this story. It was adorable and genuinely funny at times. I found myself laughing out loud and smiling through so many scenes. It’s such a clever and heartwarming variation of Pride and Prejudice and it managed to feel original while still honoring the spirit of Austen’s world.

Absolutely loved it. A total feel-good read.

A great take on Austen!

It's amazing how many people riff on Jane Austen, but this is one of the best I've read, mainly because it doesn't try to reimagine Pride and Prejudice, but rather to imagine what inspired it.

Loved the tension, the blooming romances, and all.

Best of all, I don't think I was once jerked out of the story by sloppy (or no) editing, which is a sad rarity these days.

Will definitely keep an eye out for this author. 👍
