Directly following the events of The Pocket Watch, Lucius Knight becomes involved in the investigation of the assassination attempt on the life of Balthasar Bekker VII, head of the House of Bekker. The culprit is merely described as a man in thin white armor.
This book is a hot mess in many ways. Typos abound, which I can overcome. (There are many, and a close proofreading would fix many of them. Seems sloppy.) But just like the first book, the convoluted tangles of characters, places, rules, alliances are just too much! The characters (and their supposed relationships) just get lost. I'm very disappointed to see very little growth or evolution in the depth of Lucius and Imogen. I see the books tagged as "romance," but that label is misleading.
The story would greatly benefit from a red pen and a good edit. What is the point of the werewolves- to just move a character from point A to point B? And new, random characters literally show up out of nowhere to save some folks and conveniently transport them. That's thin, even for fantasy based fiction.
The ending pages are the messiest of all. I think the out-of-nowhere revelations about who's on what side and who's not real were just exasperating. Maybe these plot twists are supposed to be shocking and clever, but I felt like they were awkward and poorly done. The fate of a main character isn't well explained, even after a re-read of certain sections. I can usually keep up, so I'm pretty sure it's just not well handled.
I see the third book has a title, but no release date has been announced. I'm on the fence about whether to move forward.
I absolutely love this new author. I think he has a big future in the world of fantasy. I so much enjoyed the complexity of the plot and the wonderful uniqueness of the world and characters created in all three books of The Trinity Saga I have read so far. The idea of the stone angels, Nemuri, that rule the underworld, their connection to the watch keepers, the three princesses and their guardian knights, the forest made out of memories that light up, the identity of Pandora, it all took me on a wonderful journey where I savored every page. I tend to evaluate fantasy authors on the uniqueness and the beauty of the world they unroll for us,and the intelligence of overall design - Ronnell D.Porter passed with flying colors. I read a lot of fantasy and consider myself picky within the genre; it is difficult for me to find the author who has it all and settle with the book, so I am totally rejoiced with discovering this one. On the matter of typos: there are a lot, but no more than in an average advanced reader copy. I wish them gone, but I have noticed that the author is donating all the proceeds from the books to the Breast Cancer and Save The Children foundations and professional editors cost a lot.
Although the ideas and story the author is trying to depict are very interesting, the execution of the book hinders the plot and the ability to relate to the book. It is so difficult to keep track of all of the characters that continue to be introduced throughout Book 2. When twists in the plot are meant to excite or shock, the lack of explanation simply leaves the reader confused. I really like the concept of wraithcraft and the plot that the author is attempting to weave, but the awkward writing, grammatical errors, and utter confusion makes it difficult to enjoy. I was also slightly annoyed with the relationship between Lucius and Imogen. Perhaps it is the result of having a male point of view, but I didn't connect to the intimacy shared between the characters like I normally do and I found myself annoyed with how fake Imogen's feelings felt.
I'm really enjoying the series so far. It's very intricate and the plot is deep (although somewhat hard to follow at times.) I think I'm enjoying most, the world and the "beings" in it, what they are capable of, who has what powers, etc. I also like that I'm finally getting to know some of the characters on more than a base level, which for me is what turns pages.
There were a couple of "come on now, that didn't really happen" scenes where things seemed just a little absurd and stuck in to forward the plot but for the most part that was kept to a minimum.
There are a lot of typos, less maybe than in the first book but still plenty. While I get stuck on them briefly (because I can't write anything with a glaring typo and move on without fixing it) I was able to still enjoy the book.
even better than the first! wow definitely read this book! I loved the first book but this ones great because the romantic connection between the two characters is insane! I don't want to give anything away but the end of this book is definitely not what you expect and you will be very upset after you read it! I cried for hours and I was so mad the author would end the book that way but I pushed myself and made myself start reading the third book. it wasn't that it was a bad ending it was just not what you want. but I have faith in this author and I'm hoping and praying he fixes what he's done soon in the third book. read this series everyone!!!
I really liked this book. It had the excitement of the first and something I didn't expect- tears, yes it had me in tears!!! I can't wait for the next one.
