I wanted to like this series. I really did. But the harem dynamic, which in fairness I knew going in, ultimately ruined it. I am convinced there is no way to make a harem story good. Harem dynamics are fundamentally opposed to good storytelling.

I do want to give credit. The author created a fascinating world and set-up, enough to keep me engaged throughout the story. The MC was actually intriguing and not just some power fantasy horndog.

But the harem dynamic absolutely ruined both the supporting characters, the relationships, and the overall plot. Perhaps it could've worked if the author had limited the women in the harem to two or three. But expanding it to around seven turned each of the women into cardboard cut outs, completely lacking depth or interest and, as far as the plot was concerned, just holes for the MC to use. It isn't that the author can't write compelling female characters; he can (see Sonia). But in spreading the story so thin, it's like the MC was collecting pokemon women. There was the sorority girl, the goth girl, the nerd, the tough girl, the enemies-to-lovers girl, and the alien. Once they joined the harem, they were just walking stereotypes whose interaction with the MC is limited to sex and not much else. Worse, their entire "character" arcs (calling them characters feels generous; characatures would be more accurate) is solely focused on joining the harem. Once that happens, they are shunted into the background to make room for the next in line. It makes the relationships frustrating and boring to read.

The most egregious example of this is Sonia. For the first two books, and what helped me overlook the annoying harem dynamic, was how well-written and developed her character was. Unlike any of the other women, she had a genuine and well-developed relationship with the MC before they hooked up. She had a real backstory, a real personality that wasn't a cardboard cut-out. She had goals beyond the MC. She had a character arc that wasn't dependent on joining the harem. Unlike any of the other women, I could buy her emotional and mental connection with the MC. She was also the only one that had an equal relationship with the MC. It was refreshing, fun, dynamic, and different.

But after hooking up with the MC at the end of book 2, she is completely sidelined in book 3 so the MC can hook up with two more cardboard characters (who are deeply uninteresting). This is despite there being so much more to both Sonia's character and her relationship with the MC to be explored and built on. She went from being the primary FC in the first two books to barely present in book 3. It made the entire third act of the trilogy boring.

But this is the fundamental problem with harem dynamics and why using them is always bad writing and bad storytelling. It cannot be done well. At all. To maintain the harem, the writer has to nerf interesting female (or male, depending) characters so none of them upset the static dynamic. It makes for uninteresting characters, uninteresting relationships, and ultimately, uninteresting plots. To all writers out there, never, ever write harems. If you do, you are by definition, a bad writer.
