Kingverse Orcs #1

Bossed by the Orc

Rate this book
The damsel in distress is supposed to fall for prince charming, not the monster in her fairy tale…right?

Cleaning offices was far from Penelope’s dream job. But dreams don’t pay the bills, and if she wanted to save her family’s home, she needed money fast. Her grumpy, annoyingly sexy orc boss didn’t factor into her plans at all. Or so she kept telling herself…

Dristan was too busy running his empire to waste time on things like romance. Then he saw his pretty new employee and everything changed. He knows Penelope would be a perfect mate. Too bad wooing is not part of his skillset…

When danger finds its way to Penelope’s door, Dristan will do anything to protect her. But when all is said and done, will it be enough to convince her to take a shot at happily ever after? Or will their love story end before it ever truly begins?

This is exactly what I wanted - not enough plot to make me think but just enough to entertain and distract

This was ok for me. The usual monster type thing and fated mates.

I found it a little boring or maybe their relationship needed more learning about each other and tension. And Dristan was too much for me - too bossy. He always told her what to do and I thought that would change over the book but it didn’t.

this was my first orc book and i have to say that im a fan!! i finished this already but it wasn’t popping up as read on good reads which is a bit odd. the end was kind of weird to me with the kidnapping scene. i feel like the story could’ve gone without it but i get needing a dramatic scene.

pretty good read

This book was recommended from a reading group I’m in on Facebook and I liked it. It was well written. However, I didn’t really care for the ending and what happened to Pen.

Love this book!

If you like grumpy orcs and their sassy human mates, you’ll love this one! Dris is grouchy, but determined to convince Pen that she is his! And after Pen gets a glimpse at his high handed ways he’ll definitely have to do some convincing. This is a cute, sweet, fun read and I can’t wait for book two!

DNFd at 30%. Super cute cover and cute story but I find myself getting bored while reading. There’s just not enough interaction and dialogue between the mains to hold my attention.

What is it about an Orc Billionaire romance that has me swooning and giggling every time. If you love grumpy
mmc's and Sassy plus size fmc's. It has humor, spice, and a close-knit family bond that gives you all the feel-good vibes.

*****Spoilers*****

Dristan is an orc executive and Penelope is the human woman recently hired to clean four floors in an office building, one of which is the top floor where Dristan works. Dristan is ornery with a growl and temperament to match but for the most part is a decent male. Penelope moved to a bigger city for more opportunities to make additional money so that she could help support her parents and herself since she still lives with them. Her mom has been sick and her medical care meant that they were behind on their mortgage payments so she and her parents were facing the possibility of being unhoused. Dristan sees her on her first day of work and is very much interested in having her even if his introduction is less than ideal since he thinks there has been a breach in security at his building. Dristan wasn't aware that his assistant had recently hired new cleaning staff for his floor with explicit instruction NOT to clean his office. Once his brother, who is responsible for security, confirms that there was no security breach, Dristan relaxes on that part but remains laser focused on Penelope.

The rest of the book is a lot of push and pull as it relates to the physical attraction between Dristan and Penelope with Dristan trying his best to take care of her, particularly after Dristan realizes that Penelope is his mate.  Dristan asked his brother to look into Penelope and learns she was living with a roommate and the roommate's creepy boyfriend. Dristan offers her a ride home once he learns of this and offers Penelope a better paying job as his personal assistant just as they get there. Once Penelope agrees, with the this offer may be given to others, time is of the essence urgency as an incentive, Dristan immediately goes into her place to pack her up for the move into his place. It's when they begin to live together that Penelope sees that he's not really as grouchy as he seems on the outside and she gets to experience how sweet he can be to her.

There's a plot thrown in about the aggressive beings forcing their neighbors to sell their homes that I thought was unnecessary. Penelope rushes home with Dristan in tow and ends up getting snatched from their front door and threatened so that she agrees to sign the house over to them. Thankfully for her, Dristan, his brother, and a friend come to her rescue before much can happen to her.

I liked both characters and the writing is good. There are a couple of what seem at book end to be inconsistencies regarding how far behind they were on the home payments and how much Penelope was able to pay off with an advance she requested from Dristan at one point in the book. This one needs more world building too, there isn't really any information about how orcs and other beings came to live among and be known to one another. The orc sounds very human which was a bit of a disappointment, world building could help clarify if other beings have been around for a while and whether they've learned to be more corporate executive. I felt there wasn't enough otherness to Dristan that I expected. Overall, it's a decent read.

Fated mates insta lust but with a surprisingly spow burn! Actually I loved that the attraction was BAM right there, our MMC Dristan acted on it pretty much immediately, but still it ended up taking ages for them to get together because he feels that he has to show her that he's good partner material. Even though he doesn't quite know how to be. Like being mates (fated?) wasn't enough, respect and affection also had to be there and how awesome is that? On our FMC Penelope's side the story was a little more predictable - a poor human woman doesn't want to ruin her job prospects by getting with the boss, and therefore doesn't immediately go to him for help he could easily give when she needs it. I do not agree with these FMCs - take that cash, they are not going to miss it - but at least in this story there was a solid enough context for it.

I hit around the 60% mark on this story and wasn't really sure how the rest of it was going to pan out - it felt very like we were speeding up to a natural conclusion pretty quickly - so I was surprised and delighted by the turn the latter third of the story took. I loved seeing Dristan in his element, being all growly and protective. Once we get to the * action * it is everything we want in an orc romance - think size difference, stretching and all the fluids. does enter as a plot point, just in case that's a yuck for you (it's not a yum for me, but its done in a way that felt very loving and not overbearing). It was well seeded (haha).

I've never anything by Saam King before, and I feel like I've been missing out? I'm happy I've a whole new back catalogue to go through, and that this is the first in a series!!

1.5 / 5.0

There are a few things about this that really ruined it for me.

First, the borderline body shaming that happened throughout the book. The reader is constantly reminded of the body type and appearance of every character in this book and how it is either an asset or to the detriment of those being discussed.

Second, in tandem with the copious discussion on body type, there is an implied socioeconomic and educational deficiency given to those of certain body types. The FMC is poor, her family needs her to "send money home", and she's just got to take the scraps given to her because that's her lot in life. Her parents got in financial trouble, so they put the house in her name so the bank could never foreclose on it, but lo and behold, it doesn't matter because a big bad developer forged the deed. It's completely incorrect information and is thinly veiled anti-immigrant propaganda, in my opinion.

Last, there are so many plot holes. So many, many, many plot holes, I had to stop wondering about anything because obviously the MMCs blatantly toxic behavior (hidden in plain sight because it's a monster romance) is the only plot. This is another type of propaganda, a trad-wife type of anti-feminist bullcrap that absolutely made me see red and gave me the ICK.

I am also not entirely convinced this was written originally without the significant assistance of AI. Some paragraphs and phrases feel like they are right out of a GTP generator.

Overall, this was not good. Not good at all. I don’t recommend and won't be reading any more from this author.

Until Next Time,
MC

If you’re into:
•Fated Mates
•Boss/Secretary
•Office Romance
•Modern Monster Romance
•Strong Alpha Male Personality Type

Spice 🌶️: 2.5/5

Okay…..I had a hard time reading this book. Honestly, I got a lot of mixed feelings about this book. Again as an avid Orc Romance lover, I’ve read a decent amount of personality types from the broody/grumpy orc, cinnamon roll orc, the protective type, and etc. The MMC was just really controlling. He kind of reminded me of Christian Grey from 50 Shades of Grey with his controlling & alpha male personality plus this weird contract between him & the FMC to not reveal she’s his mate. But the contract was to help give her job/pay her.

50% of the book, I was kinda over this extremely broody & controlling personality of the MMC. There were a few moments I enjoyed the MMC and him trying to woo the FMC. But 90% of the book was him acting extremely jealous, wanting to be in control of the FMC, and dictate who she can and won’t talk to. I get it, it’s the whole “You’re my mate and you can’t talk to any guy, but me,” however I got over it real fast after one scene between the FMC and a minor character. The FMC had some really funny bits especially her fighting her attraction towards the MMC. And that was about it. I’m hoping to read the authors other books in the series because some of them really sound good! This one just wasn’t my favorite.

Am I out here falling in love with orc romance? Yeah. Yeah, I think I am.

This one gave me those sweet Maid in Manhattan vibes, but without the pain of watching Jenny from the Block pretend she didn’t grow up on the 6 train. It was soft and warm, with just enough spice to keep the pages turning and the fan on low.

From page one, I was in. Give me a curvy girl who knows she’s fine and isn’t out here apologizing for taking up space. We’re fat girls, and we deserve our fantasy too. No shrinking. No shame. Just beauty and boldness. And baby, she was serving.

Dristan had that perfect edge of jerk boss energy that made me clutch my pearls but not quite call HR. His banter with Rudgar was everything. That brotherly teasing felt so natural, so real, and it balanced the heat with just the right touch of humor.

Now, I do have one little gripe. That whole “a billionaire orc wants to take care of me but I must resist because society” trope? Girl. You living with a man who makes you feel unsafe and your family home is one eviction notice from ruin. Let that orc pour love and luxury all over your life. Accept the orc-sugar, ma’am. You earned it.

All in all, a delightful start to a series I will absolutely be devouring. Bring on the green kings and their big soft hearts.

🤷🏾‍♀️

A lot about this book was odd to me. For instance the use of female and male rather than woman or orc. Now I understand that this was interspecies but still read clunky. Penelope oscillated between fiesty Brown girl and anxiety wallflower so it sometimes read like 2 different people rather than a multilayered character. The reason for their attraction felt like a mid book fix rather than a salient point but was complicated when Dristan moved her in without telling her the real reason. Did I hate it? No. But I didn’t enjoy it enough to going in the series.

So if you like monster romance- go be free
If you especially love size difference - you'll be reminded often enough so you don't forget
But if you really like an MMC who throws money at any little inconvenience then definitely pick this up. Penelope did that annoying thing where she said she cant expensive gifts. Girl take the new clothes, house, car, and debt relief and keep it moving.

Format: ebook KU
Romance tag: open door
CN: housing and income insecurity, predatory banking, creeping male character, fighting, knife violence, kidnapping

1.5/5 ⭐️ naaah

“She was the most precious thing I owned.”
Yeah… that line alone told me everything I needed to know.

He’s pushy, bossy, and just a walking red flag. His only focus is getting her into bed, and when he finally admits he knew she was his mate from the beginning (page 248 out of 325, mind you), she’s just okay with it. He lies, pays off her mom’s medical bills and her parents’ mortgage behind her back, and she believes the bank made a mistake like, girl, please.

Then he goes, “You’re going to marry me,” and apparently that’s the closest thing to a proposal she’ll ever get? Instant ick.
And don’t even get me started on:

“I want you pregnant as soon as possible.”
When she says, “And I suppose I have some say in that,”
He replies, “You get to decide how many we have. I’m willing to stop after six.”

Sir, what?!

She gets kidnapped, beaten, and the first thing he thinks after saving her is that he needs her? Maybe give the poor girl a second to breathe? Everything doesn’t have to be about sex. Oh, and buying houses without discussing it with her first? Yeah, no.

He doesn’t treat her like an equal, just like something he owns. Hard pass from me.

Dristan is an orc CEO who is used to commanding everyone and they obey. When a new cleaning lady is in his office, he snaps at her... but she snaps back. He's intrigued. The more he's around her the more he realizes that she's his mate.

Penelope's family is down on their luck. Her mom is sick and has tons of medical bills. Facing eviction because they can't pay the mortgage, Pen quits school and grabs work as soon as possible as a maid. Next thing she knows, she's living in her boss's house as a private assistant.

I loved this story, but I did feel that I needed to take one star off. Dristan's personality is very domineering. I get that he's supposed to grow and learn, but it really felt like he forced Pen to live with him without a choice. He only gave her like 5 seconds to choose. Knowing how in debt she is, I felt this was pretty cruel. I like a man that takes care of the FL, but I don't like someone dictating her life for her. Next, I don't think Pen's roommate's creepy boyfriend was ever solved. I hate having loose ends.

Yes!

Ok, wow, I was not expecting this. Lately I've been bored with most monster romances, because they've been too much fluff, too cozy, hardly spicy, and too "human".
This is pretty much a Prince and Peasant romance, but with a modern monster flare. And the spice! 😍 It's so rare to find an author that actually understands "size differences". It was a slow burn, and there was a couple scares near the end (and the FMC annoyed me all to heck with her not allowing him to pamper her crap). Granted, if this was real life and with a human guy, I'd be super suspicious like, "what do you want for all these gifts you're giving me?" But this is a fantasy, so it's all good, lol, just let him make you happy, dangit. I really did love these too, though. He's a big bad imposing monster and she's, well, prey 😏. I especially LOVE the artwork. More often than not I don't see book covers that I actually want to keep, and the fact that I adore anime just makes it that much sweeter. Can't wait to read the next one 😁

OMG!! When I read the blurb of this, I knew I wanted to read it. But when I saw a TikTok giving more specifics and excerpts... I knew I had to have it!! This was phenomenal. I was hooked the entire time, and am now fully invested in the rest of the cast!! I loved the journey of the characters and the relationship. Spoiler alert: I absolutely loved how Dristan wanted Penelope to love him BEFORE telling her she was his mate! 😍 He was SUCH a white-knight and green-flags guy! Saying things and realizing how they came across, then APOLOGIZING and making sure to think before he spoke?!? And the sexual tension!!?!?!? Unbelievable!! Edge of my seat, lip biting, toe curling, deep breath needing!!! Superb!! And now I MUST get the next one. And any more that come along. I will be supporting this author AND this series forever!!!

❤️ Love a POC plus size women protagonist
❤️ The two mcs fell for each other buz they are both flaming hot but this time I’m actually attracted to them both
💀 I’m calling HR
💀This is the couple using the entire world as their sex toy
💀Why mate they Aussie?
💀 Stop arguing how many kids you should have this is no one else’s business except the one who would actually carry and give birth to the child
💀 Not the 90% kidnapping
💀 Is there a gold mine under their home or something?
💀”No one’s ever going to hurt you again” you do realize that giving birth might be fatal right?
💀 Stop calling her hands small and can do no harm to him… She literally cannot flee from the kidnappers buz they are bigger and stronger than her and that’s the same when the mcs having sex… Like why can’t we as a society stop fetishizing this?

Nice read

While I liked the book overall, I got the sense after chapter 8/9, that the author dumbed down the FMC just in order to create angst and long suffering, which I felt was highly unnecessary. The FMC is smart, and likes to read and do her research, but she didn't realize that Dristan felt she was his mate?, couldn't detect his "gods-deliver-us" magnificent overtures, like buying a house for not her, but her parents? Didn't she hear the deli owner ask if she was his mate? Didn't she read what matehood meant to this species of males she was dealing with and interested in?. Why didn't a woman like her, who likes to be direct ask him what he really wanted? After kneeling to give her the best orgasm in her life, why didn't she ask him if this was still a boss and employee situation?. Both characters are nothing but straight talking, no nonsense people, but after he lifted her over his shoulders in public and throughout an elevator ride up a Skyscraper, she still thought he saw her as an employee?...... An orc who doesn't normally cavort with women/females????? I felt so insulted. I felt like the author was calling her audience "stupid". To make a character downright stupid in order to advance a story is totally unacceptable to me. I hate dumb women, passionately. And the only reason I kept on reading, even though I skipped several irrational and irrelevant pages, is because the writing style, grammar and MMC were superbly worded, described and narrated. The writer is excellent, but she needs not turn her characters, especially her female characters into morons, for a storyline.

I was genuinely surprised how fun this was, and how much I liked it. I don’t have a good reason for liking it. It has some problems. The writing follows some of the usual tropes in an obvious way/without finesse. We had fated mates, forced proximity, billionaire boss/broke btch.

I liked it so much that I’m annoyed I didn’t get to learn more about the orcish language and customs that were sprinkled in. I feel like this should have leaned harder into the fantasy world it’s built in. What does a half orc / half human child even look like?? And, I’m so tired of the word female right now.

Howeverrrr this was a pretty good monster romance. It’s probably even a 4.25. I might come back and round it up to 5.

If you have never read Saam King then start here! New fav!!!

I loved this book from start to finish! It had lots of humor, steamy slow burn that resulted in satisfying spice, and the plot was perfect. The writing is so fluent you feel like you are falling into the story, and the banter between the leads is so satisfying, and this author never disappoints with world building and providing great characters. I was laughing, tearing up, edge of my seat page turning, and lip biting through the whole book. Cannot wait for the next book!

STEAMY WITH A CAPITAL S

I don’t know how much I can say without Amazon taking my review down, but from the first page I knew I was in for the ride of a lifetime.
This book is equal parts incredibly sweet and scorching. I couldn’t put it down for the life of me. I want so much to be showered with affection like Dristan did Penelope (extreme stubbornness aside) and his grumpiness is even more adorable when you read from his POV.
I’m happy that this was recommended to me by Kindle and I can’t wait to read more!

monster rom comSweet, spicy, funny, fun

I read these out of order, will probably go back and reread the others. I simply love the way these orc males love their women, reminds me of my husband when we were first together. Sometimes these orc books make me wonder if he’s hoodwinked me, he’s an albino Orc!!! lol
These are funny, fun, sweet, 🔥🌶️ steamy, simple, but engaging.
Would recommend for those seeking low stakes, high heat monster lovin’, grumpy/sunshine, romantic comedy.

I dont always like the grumpy/sunshine trope. But I do always like orcs, so here we are.
In this case, the sunshine half of the duo, the FMC, wasn't an idiot. Too often, it seems like the sunshine bit makes authors suck the brains out of their heads. That wasn't the case here. Penelope had a fire, and a brain, and didnt just give in because her body said to. I appreciated that as well, actually. She wanted him, but understood it was a line she shouldn't cross, and was pretty good about holding off. I will absolutely read the rest of these.

Not the best but not the worst. I’m just being picky

This star review is personal. I read the word “male” so often it lost all meaning. The 1st couple of chapter had my interest.

The 2 stars is because I could not suspend my disbelief about the mortgage. Unless this is supposed to be like 2008 financial crisis situation. I say this as someone who works mortgages day in and day out. I’m not saying that this is unrealistic entirely. There were just some things that took me out of the fantasy.

New author for me

I came across the series as a suggested reading for me. I have read a few supernatural romances with orcs, so I decided to try this one. It was a cute story. Both of the main characters were likable. I always enjoy it when the male recognizes his mate first and quickly. There was good story telling, good character building, a little bit of world building (but it takes place in modern time so really not much needed there), there were some mildly spicy scenes, and a little bit of snark. I think I’ll continue with the series.

I'm such a huge fan of Saam's monster romances and this book is just as fun, spicy and sweet as the rest. This work place romance starts off with Penelope starting her new cleaning job when she interacts with Orc boss on the top floor. Little does she know, she is her mate. He struggles to restrain himself around her until he can woo her properly...spoiler, he does 😉
This story has it all and I highly recommend reading it! I can't wait for book 2!

Bossy Orc

Penelope, a human, is working as a cleaning lady in the city, and Dristen, an orc, owns the company. She needs the money to help her parents pay the mortgage and medical bills. Dristen is drawn to her and then realizes she's his mate, but she won't cross the professional personal line until she takes care of her money problems herself. I enjoyed the push-pull relationship, and the spice was great. It was a fantastic story. Definitely recommend this book.

Entertaining romp

Classic grumpy boss that gets bowled over by the sweet girl. These two are fun to watch as they slowly come together. When Dristan finally realizes he’s falling for Penelope she has to leave to help her family. He uses his power and money to get the bad guys. Then wins her over by showing he is a caring male.

Love the art work. It shows Sista Girl as she is described!
