Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
After spending years adoring both the animated series and the films of the same name, I knew I could only do proper justice in giving a volume of the series revival a shot. Firstly no matter the overall quality you have to give props and appreciation for a real double feature situation with while in truth being a little more toned down, surreal and confusing but just fascinating enough to bring you into he main event and main event it is. Aside from the slow ominous turn and wait type style of this one, the grotesque shadings were morbidly beautiful and that cliffhanger ends sealed my fate as a recurring reader. 3.75/5
“Let Her Trip,” is a tale told of a mother who had to back something of herself until the idiot of a guru gave her hallucinogenic mushrooms to tide her over. A release much to her cult devoted daughter’s horror. “Scrimshaw” is another tale told by an idiot chaos of a human being, a fisherman, to a man, a journalist of sorts working for some company of real estate. A fisherman discovers a bony hand with etchings carved into bone. He loved the story of a “navigator”, but dissatisfied with its ending. The tale had no ending. He obviously wanted that ending. The ghoul from the sea gave him another catch. But no ending. The ghoul no longer show up. So the fishermen decided to carve out his invention of another strand of a story, just to get to the ending which is to be carved out on a journalist who should never have come to hear this tale… The illustrations are excellent. The pacing of these tales are steady, and well written. Be looking forward to the next batch.
Always down for some more James Stokoe comics! This didn't disappoint. Really fantastic art with a creepy story. The ending is a bit of a letdown, but it was good while it lasted.
I’m not sure I fully grasp these short stories. They were visually stunning and somewhat entertaining, but I just couldn’t connect with them on any meaningful level. None of the characters felt engaging, and the horror elements lacked that spark of intrigue or tension to make them memorable. Maybe there’s an overarching narrative I’m missing, but this issue didn’t pull me in. I wouldn’t recommend it. Grade: D
This is a great issue that embodies fun anthology horror.
Let Er Trip feels like a condensed yet more gory version of Carrie, while Scrimshaw is one of the best creature feature stories I've read. That one became one of my new favorites from the franchise.
