From the creators of the adorable dogs-vs.-serial killer graphic novel series "Stray Dogs" comes a new adorable horror thriller, "Feral". This time it's cats vs. zombies (zombie animals, that is...).

Elsie and Lord are domesticated cats who find themselves in a truck with a bunch of other scared cats. When the truck crashes, the two cats must fend for themselves in the dark woods against a myriad of wild animals that aren't quite right. Unbeknownst to them, there is an epidemic of an extremely nasty strain of rabies, one that is attacking any and all four-legged animals. The disease seems to be spread by bite or scratch, so as long as they can find shelter before the rabid animal packs find them, they're safe.

A word of warning: use discretion if you let your kid read this series. My daughter is 11, and while she thought the cats were cute, she was a little shocked by the amount of blood. Also, there's adult language throughout. Overall, I wouldn't let your kid read this if they aren't old enough to watch stuff like "Stranger Things" or "The Walking Dead".

I will continue when the second volume is out, but not very happy about it.
The artwork is really nice, but those characters (cats) are so annoying. Elsie is annoying. Lord is annoying. And damn, I understand it's cats trying to survive in the world, where other animals are infected, but one more issue where they just scream "RUN!" and them running, and I'll drop.

Absolutely brutal from the start, and I’m so in for this! This scratches the Walking Dead itch that I’ve had since reading that series beautifully. I’m a little less emotionally invested, but I’m definitely getting there through these first five issues. So ready for more of this story!

3.8 ⭐️ Think zombie outbreak but it’s animals with rabies.

The art for this is awesome and it’s laid out in a really clear and easy to follow manner, as is the story. It’s bleak, fairly gory and fast paced.

However it did feel quite repetitive with many of the scenes feeling similar when they were running away. There is some story building in the background but I would like to see more of that.

I am really enjoying the animal led horror concepts Fleecs is putting out lately, they feel fresh and are really interesting premises.

I’ll be continuing to read the series because I enjoyed it but the story needed more fleshing out beneath the (rabies infested) surface.

TWs listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.

TW// rabies outbreak, abandoned animals, gore, blood, animal corpses, animal harm, shooting and guns, car crash, death.

“The Walking Dead meets The AristoCats” is an excellent description of this new graphic novel from the team of Tony Fleecs, Trish Forstner, Tone Rodriguez and Brad Simpson who created the captivating Stray Dogs.

Cats get the spotlight in this new series, as Elsie, Lord Fluffy Britches, and Patch are all indoor pets that are suddenly taken away from their family during a strange rabies outbreak. After they escape they try to find their way home, but rabid forest animals hunt them before they join up with some more savvy cats who lead them to safety. But as with The Walking Dead series, do not get attached to any one character, as death comes often for this group of brave felines.

The art style is inspired by the Don Bluth style of animation, showcased in classic children’s movies like All Dogs Go To Heaven, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and The Secret of NIMH. The cats all have distinct looks to make it easy to keep track of who is who. The cutesy art with a deadly storyline makes for an interesting juxtaposition and was a fun read this Halloween season. In addition, the cover art of each issue and the concluding artist pages are a treat.

However, the zombie storyline is a bit overdone, so I prefer the more original Stray Dogs- but I am a cat lover and am willing to keep following this dark tail (tale)! (Actual review 3.5/5)

Great art OKAY story.

Basically the end of the world is happening for these kitties. They get overturned in a animal control van, and all the animals in this forest they get lost in are rabbies infected. Basically a zombie story with cats, and it's pretty brutal and scary but also these characters don't feel much like anything. But to be honest, zombie stories save a few (Walking Dead) rarely make me care about characters. Overall decent, different, and great art but okay story/plot.

Really enjoyed this! Wild, weird, and way more emotional than you’d expect, Feral follows a group of house cats navigating a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where survival means embracing their instincts. Fleecs nails the animal perspective with sharp storytelling and raw emotion. It’s violent, tragic, and strangely beautiful—think Homeward Bound if it was written by Stephen King. A gritty, unforgettable ride for fans of dark animal tales.

Rabies, but make it more like a zombie apocalypse for cats. The cartoonish artwork is appealingly contrary to the many scenes of animal violence, but the storytelling is pretty dull and predictable. Stupid cats make stupid decisions, hurting the cats who are making good decisions. Will they make it out of the rabies apocalypse alive? Probably some will, but I'm not super invested.

Feline survival horror. Three house cats are stranded in the woods as a turbo-rabies epidemic sweeps through the area. Every animal they encounter is Cujo; every human has instructions to shoot anything on four legs.

From the team that produced Stray Dogs. Feral's cats are basically little feline people. Some have far too much faith in humans. One is impulsive and single-mindedly hunger-motivated. Others are suspicious, or innocent, or lazy. Cat personalities expressed for human appreciation.

It's not a bad little horror story, though it does lean overly hard on a pair of plot devices:
1) Look, another harmless animal seen from behind, perhaps it can help usOMG IT'S A CUJO OH THE FELINITY
2) Oh no a Cujo thing has me corneredOMG A BIGGER CUJO CAME OUT OF NOWHERE AND CHOMPED IT

They're good bits.....once.

Love the parody horror film posters at the back of the volume, nice little treat.

Instant pick up because of how much I enjoyed Stray Dogs by the same creators. While this one didn’t pull me in the same way as the Stray Dogs, I thought it was an enjoyable entry to a new series. The idea that rabies is becoming a wide spread disease amongst humans AND animals is intriguing. The artwork by Forstner and Rodriguez is exceptional as always. This one ends on a cliff hanger so if you have access to the second one, I recommend picking that up as well.

Only Tony Fleecs & Trish Forstner could make me read a book where animals die in the most gruesome ways but I just keep coming back for more. What did I expect from the people who wrote Stray Dogs? Please do not go into this thinking it’s going to be cutesy and demure. This is unpredictable and FERAL.

Feral ratchets up the horror-tone from Stray Dogs even more, making this a potentially hard read for animal lovers or the feint at heart. Even if you love zombie-genre entertainment, there is something completely different seeing it unfold w/ adorable cartoon cats being traumatized. The juxtaposition is so jarring, yet so effective. Swapping cats for people and rabies for zombies is a perfectly good idea. I just wish it was hinting at something more interesting than generic zombie story plot beats (but with cats). I will say that even just the slight environmental storytelling that we see of the human side of the situation is very cool.

When three indoor cats, Elsie, Lord Fluffy Britches, and Patch, are taken away from the homes, a car accident leads them to get lost in the wilderness. In a desperate attempt to get back home with the help of fellow stray felines, the cats find themselves in a nightmarish rabies outbreak as they are prey to a bunch of rabid beasts.

I loved this.
This comic did not pull any punches. It’s was intense from page 1 to the end. I can’t wait for more.
If you do not like on page animal deaths, stay away. But I do think you should read it anyway cause it was awesome.

Fleecs and Co made a great, engaging book in Stray Dogs, offering a unique POV at a dark story, but Feral doesn't hit quite as hard because it's essentially a zombie movie, except with cats instead of people. It's still thrilling and fun, but there wasn't really a moment that made me go "oh, this is a good twist on the genre".

2.5* I wasn't a fan of Stray Dogs, and it looks like I won't be a fan of Feral, either. Same problems as with Stray Dogs: while the art is nice and the premise interesting, the execution is not. I'm not a fan of the dialogues, most of them a combination of "I don't..." and "Run!" Lots of said running and action and blood in the story, which means there's no time to get attached to any of the characters, who are my biggest problem with Feral because... they're simply very annoying.

This was okay. Some of the drawings were weird with cat arms bending at odd angles. It is pretty fast-paced and manages some character development in there, but overall I found the treatment of rabies as a shoot-all-the-animals a bit over the top.

interesting concept at first, i love cats and i love zombies, but unfortunately i cant bring myself to care about any of the characters yet, they actually annoy me. the art is great though, and it does not pull punches in terms of blood, gore and explicit language. it’s definitely filling a niche for adults that enjoy animal xenofiction, but i hope the characterisation improves in the next volumes.

Feral is a horror/thriller graphic novel by Tony Fleecs about a group of house cats trying to survive there version of the zombie apocalypse, aka rabies. Without the help and safety that their human provide them the three rush to get back home. But when danger lurks around every corner, and secrets get reveled will the three be able to make it back home, or will they go feral.
..
.
I rate this graphic novel 3.5 out of 5. I found the main cast to be slightly annoying, but the story and the art make up for it. The art is fantastic and one of the main reasons I picked this up. I am very excited to read the next volume and see where this takes us.
