Alice runs a top secret, and enigmatic, government agency – The Centre. She sorts out problems which cannot be dealt with through the usual channels. When a major security breach is detected she finds a link between this new threat and one of her first cases for The Centre in 1986. Realising she can use this connection to her advantage she reconnects with someone from her past, someone who didn’t even realise he was still being watched after a quarter of a century. Together they work to protect an innocent girl and ensure that as far as the world is concerned – nothing happened. Set to a backdrop of riots, the Arab Spring and Wikileaks, Nothing Else Happened in 2011 reconnects the characters from Nothing Happened in 1986 in a dramatic new tale of international intrigue.
This is the follow-up to Nothing Happened in 1986.
What I love about both books is how normal the main characters are; I know people just like them (especially teachers!). This could lead to them being boring, but this really works in the story’s favour; they react as everyone would and have the fears and make the mistakes we all do. I particularly like the main character written in the first person, and the set pieces being fleshed out by third person explanations from the other characters’ point of view. I wish the last third of the novel had been a little more meaty but that didn’t spoil the story. A good read, especially when one is laid up with ‘flu and reads it in a day!
Nothing happened in 1986 precedes this and was a good solid read. I did it in one day whilst ignoring all the things I should have been doing. This didn't fail to live up to expectations. A series Steve?
